Pranav Thakor Goyal’s Abode (Pune)

The house is conceived on the basic theme of an interesting use of colours, lights and moments of surprises. The Goyal family in Pune is well known, yet grounded. Simplicity and elegance are a few characteristics that have been understood and projected while completing the project. The house is located in the posh locality of the city, transformed from a mundane to an admirable comfort zone, a zone that the Goyal family lovingly calls ‘Home’. The house is a blend of traditional and contemporary values. The interesting use of lights and colours transform the basic design into that of an elegant one. Top: The main door welcomes you to the warm, bright and tasteful Living Room having an assorted seating arrangement viz. the box window seating, the sofa, upholstered settie and the fire place arm chairs. This breaks the conventional seating arrangement into a more friendly, varied seating platter. The use of greys , whites and browns highlighted by the bright sunflower yellow refreshes the eyes from the monochromatic color palette in the background.

Left: The Wall puncture overlooking the Living room (from the dining space) gives the sense of connection between areas. Right: The random slate cladding on the dummy firewall proves to be the focal point of the Living Room catalyzed by the curvilinear wooden ceiling with brass hanging lights.

colourful The three master bedrooms depict the personalities of each couple which again hints the traditional and contemporary values in them. The parents’ bedroom is a metaphor to the occupant’s taste with a material palette like wood and the semi-precious stone ‘mother of pearl’ embedded in the dark veneers. The two master bedrooms owned by the two sons respectively reflect rich yet elegant character in every dimension. The children's bedroom - occupied by three kids of various ages has been pepped up by the use or turquoise blue with dull orange soft furnishing and the nude veneered bunk-beds respecting the space for every angel in the room.

“How can a design be traditional yet contemporary? How can four walls be transformed into something you can proudly call home? These are the questions that inspire my current creation.”

Top Left: The tall boy, crystal chandelier dangling from the ceiling personifies the double heighted Living Room. The unconventional trays with a tripod stand sets a new trend for the centre table designs. Top Right: The four poster wooden bed with the stark white tapestry and upholstery with red and silver patchwork, proves to be an ideal metaphor for the head of the house. Bottom Left: The heavy, carved, wooden legs of the dining table is accentuated by the mixed chair and the upholstered bench seating on the either side of it. The cocooned ceiling light blossoms into a ceiling fan solving the aesthetic and functional requirement of the dining space. Bottom Right: The rustic grey, nylon garden furniture together with the bushy Raphis palms and the open to sky terrace, embosses a comforting statement for the morning tea and the evening coffee time of the day.

Top Left: The Bedroom 4 occupied by the younger sibling showcases the perfect blend of simple linear geometry of the furniture with the floral patterns on the tapestry. The brass lotuses on the stacked stone wall gives the sense of prosperity and discernment. The amalgamation of warm colors like yellow ochre, orange rust of the fabrics use with the earthy hues of the stone clad wall, the rich ebony veneer and the caramel brown tapestry passes the test of a brand new colour palate. Top Right: The upholstered low bed finished in white leatherette gives a soft look to the linear bed design. The conventional bed side tables have been modified to low platforms to break from usual table concept. The use of sea blue with accentuating crimsons is a perfect blend of warm and cool hues. The laser-cut paisley ceiling adds a character to the monotonous plain ceiling. Bottom Left: The mother of pearl inlay embossed in the veneered bed back personifies the clients personality and ĂŠlan. Bottom Centre: The white, paneled, wall to wall walk-in wardrobe acts as the barricade between the dressing+ washroom and the sleeping area, without creating a sense of bulkiness in the space available. Bottom Right: Playful saffrons with fresh turquoise blue, the bunk bed and the colourful toys scream out loud that this space is triumphed by the youngest members of the family - the kids.

tradition and modernity

Left: Perfect marriage of the tradition with the modernity can clearly be derived from the welcoming Buddha statue with bright colored, hanging, age-old lanterns in the patio. Right: The 3 dimensional brass lotuses symbolizes the prosperity, simplicity and the elegance of owner's personality.

The praying Buddha standing on the random arrangement of rocks, lit with multi-colored hanging lanterns catch your eye as soon as you enter the patio finished in rough Shahabad stone. The main entrance door clad in hammered, burnt eucalyptus veneer with modified brass paraath (age-old brass plate) handles welcomes you to the perfect balance of tradition with modernity inside. The abode features an inviting living room with double height ceiling, where the contemporary furniture pieces have been accentuated with the ethnic elements and floral motifs. The minimal look personifies the client’s taste of tradition marrying modernity.

The biggest challenge was to reconcile multiple opinions of the occupants, yet weaving them in a common thread of rhythm and harmony that extends the design horizon and sets a perfect example of metaphor for the client’s varied taste and personality.

I had to put my head into contemporary living and my heart in traditional values and strike an amazing balance between those two. This acted as a challenge as well as an inspiration for every design.
