The house is located in Durg, Chhattisgarh. The rectangular plot contains east-west orientation. According to the client's simple brief, the house should have spaces that were free flowing, simple and hassle-free. The design of the house needed to be climate responsive. As the region is famous for its hot and dry climate, the design of the house needed comfortable interiors cutting down the extreme heat. The house was conceived as an introvert structure with courtyards and free flowing spaces. The north side light is taken inside, keeping the south side dead to cut out the glare. At the planning stage, two bays were placed along both sides of this east-west axis. The entrance was sandwiched in between these two bays. This leads to the corridor connecting both the bays throughout their entire length culminating into the private spaces like bedrooms. Left: The hierarchy of forms with voids spilling out light at night make for a crystal sharp geometry and skyline Right: The form composed of solids & voids against the clear blue sky forms an interesting geometry
insightful One enters the house through the low height entrance and is led inside by a low height corridor that forms the central axis and runs through the entire length of the house. This corridor then releases you to the double heighted family and dining space. This creates an interesting change into the volume of the space. The formal living area is protruding out of the northern bay. The north wall of this formal living is clad in travertine. This wall wraps the space and then releases the vision to the courtyard thus, allowing the garden in the setback to flow into the interiors. The

setback on the north boundary of the plot is converted into a private courtyard by visually enclosing it with a pergola above. The wall at the far end forms the climax when seen from the executive living.
Top Left: The inconspicuous entry, deliberately kept low key, to add to the surprise of the spaces beyond once crossed Top Right: The double height family/ dining becomes the central core of the house , acts as a pivot between the private areas, overlooking the court, stairs, & bridge above Bottom Left: The entry leading further to the central axis of the house that separates the private & public spaces on the ground floor
Top Left: The Jacuzzi& shower cubicle adds to the luxury of the attached gym Top Right: Modular kitchen done up in cherry red & white makes up for an efficient , clutter free & chick space for Sunita Nirankari to exercise her creative culinary skills Bottom Left: The son's bed done up in a rustic finish in lieu with his personal brief Bottom Right: Central axis overlooking the entry, family, dining & kitchen, a seamless free flow of spaces makes it an evolving experience each time
simplicity at the core The staircase is a free standing self supporting element enveloping the tall wall which forms the focal point of the family dining space. The clear glass window touching the soffit of the children's bed room facilitates the free merger of the spaces into one another. It opens up the vision to the west mezzanine. The staircase leads to the bridge that runs on top of the east west running corridor. On the Far East this bridge connects to the home theater & its mezzanine which in cross section opens up like a wedge. This leads the vision to the sky. The bridge that runs as a layer over the corridor on the far west leads to the interesting maze of staircases which has a skylight above it. This staircase takes you along different spaces, experiences, and ultimately leads to the game room. This room is treated like a wedge in the cross section like the home theatre mezzanine. So the entire cross section of the house becomes very interesting with the two emerging sloping roofs on the east & west ends. The sky becomes a constant element as one walks throughout the house. The walls are kept bare white, with natural marble flooring. The staircase is done in wood and the furniture is kept to the minimum required degree. Only the east faรงade was where we could explore different architectural possibilities. So the entrance is highlighted by the travertine clad wall of the executive living. The guest bedroom projecting from the first floor is clad in wooden strips. This reduces the scale and gives it a homely feel. The wedge shaped cross section of the mezzanine above home theatre is seen as a cube with a void in the faรงade and a similar but a higher cube emerges from the extreme south east corner that balances the low key entrance both the cubes are white with voids. The material and colour palate balance each other. The faรงade is a balanced orchestration of solids, voids, colors, textures, materials and proportions.
Right: The dramatic play of light & shades along the staircase & courtyard allows an ever changing feel of the space & volume

the challenges The major challenge we had to primarily deal with, was the hot & dry climate of the region. Cutting out the glare & heat, and yet keeping the interiors well lighted & ventilated was a challenge . The house was designed as an introverted space, scooping in light from courtyards & filtered skylights. The staircase axis was deliberately changed & a mezzanine with a skylight was introduced at the extreme end so that the light washes in, without making it glared up. The clients wanted a plush material palette, and we intended to keep it minimalist, so that was another exercise in restrain & careful juxtaposition of both the intentions & yet come up with a design that would satisfy both the requirements.
the influences Like all our projects this design too was influenced by the zen philosophy “Emptiness in architecture or empty space is not empty but full - Sachin Patil
