V T Anand & Neelaksh Mahajan Bhuvaneshwari Vilas (Bengaluru)
This house is designed for a confident businesswoman who has a strong urban background. The client wanted to move back to the place where she spent her childhood and live amid the scent of earth and grass, and the chirping birds. She wanted the house with great views and plenty of sunlight. Also her requirements demanded a home with her own personal spaces like the spa, library and pool along with enough spaces to entertain. Bhuvaneshwari Vilas depicts a strong desire and dream to break away from ideological formations and expectations of a house, the client also wanted it to express her freedom and modern thought, through design that is impressive and luxurious without losing its warmth and homeliness.

inviting This residence is the only built form in a large open land of nearly 50 acres. The plan of the house provides for an entry, service zones, living, dining and entertaining spaces in the ground floor along with two bedrooms. The upper floor houses a bedroom, terrace garden and health spaces. Minimalist style of architecture is used to denote the spatial purity of this house. The vivid colours of the Gulmohar tree on site were used as accents in this residence. Five other trees present on site were also retained out of which the Plumeria served as the nodal point to generate the plan.

“Small niches blend themselves into the larger open spaces, creating a spatial dialogue between the inside and outside.

unconstrained space This residence has been conceived as a composition of interconnecting volumes generated from penetrating spaces. A spacious feeling pervades in response to the soaring height of the living room. The ceiling in the bedrooms is lowered to create an intimate atmosphere.

the challenges The challenges were to provide infrastructure, pest control, privacy and security. Security cameras were set up and home automation was provided. Circuit breakers were put in. Special glass was used to span the enormous openings and provide security. A high compound wall was built to provide privacy and security and was designed as an aesthetic feature in itself.
the inspiration “I was inspired by the client's definition of independence and self-reliant nature. I felt I had to design a house that represents the client's personality and becomes a reflection of her hard work. - V T Anand
