Learning Objective
The learner will identify y means to correct lighting illumination deficiencies with daylight harvesting and energy efficient lighting.
2
San Diego City College San Diego City College is uniquely situated nextt to t the th heart h t off downtown d t San S Diego, Di with close proximity to freeway access, public transportation and residential neighborhoods
3

4
Harry West Gymnasium Existing Conditions The footcandle lighting at the floor level was half of what was needed for collegiate sports.
5
Harry West Gymnasium Proposed Corrections To achieve recommended lighting levels, a daylighting retrofit was proposed to replace 400-watt High Intensity Discharge (HID) fixtures with six-bulb T-5 High Output fi t fixtures and d install i t ll natural t ld daylight li ht h harvesting ti fifixtures. t
6
Harry West Gymnasium Proposed Corrections Daylighting Project
Remove 40 750-watt HID fixtures
Replace with 20 sixbulb T-5 fixtures and 20 daylight harvesting fixtures
Annual kWh Savings 116 316 kWh 116,316 7
Harry West Gymnasium Retrofit Advantages
Savings of between $17 – 18K annually for electricity
Significantly improve lighting levels and lighting quality during both daytime and evening hours
Reduction of replacement costs for materials and labors by approximately 50%
Ability to take advantage of $12K in incentive rebates offered by San Diego Gas & Electric for this energy efficient solution energy-efficient 8
Harry West Gymnasium Daylighting Retrofit Retrofit efforts began in November 2008 with installation of the T-5 lights and electronic ballasts.
9
Harry West Gymnasium Daylighting Retrofit The installation of 20 skylights was completed in April 2009.
