MARCH 24, 2016 SPECIAL REPORT TO THE PUBLIC Trustee Mary Graham reported that she attended the second annual Social Justice Conference at City College, which she said was excellent. She also made a presentation at the California Community Colleges’ Success Network Tutor Expo at City College. Trustee Peter Zschiesche attended the Social Justice Conference, as well as the César E. Chávez Car Park grand opening. He emphasized that the community turnout at the latter event was impressive and a tribute to the close work between the Barrio Logan community and the District. He was impressed by the history that was discussed at the event and that is represented in the facility’s murals. Trustee Maria Nieto Senour also reported on the Social Justice Conference, which she attended and at which she served on a panel. She complimented City College President Anthony Beebe on his leadership in helping the college develop social justice as an organizing theme. Dr. Senour also had high praise for the Car Park grand opening because of the meaning of this iconic facility to the community. She recognized Continuing Education President Carlos Turner Cortez for his leadership in organizing this successful event. Chancellor Constance Carroll reported that the California Community Colleges Board of Governors approved the recommendations of the statewide Presidents and Chancellors to make changes pertaining to the present regional accreditor, the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC). Two workgroups will be formed, one to seek a new regional accreditor that will combine all of higher education (Chancellor Carroll will serve on that group), and another to work with ACCJC to make immediate improvements to go into effect during the multi-year process of making a permanent change. Dr. Carroll indicated that State Chancellor Brice Harris is retiring, effective April 1, and will be replaced temporarily by an Interim Chancellor, Erik Skinner, who will serve until a permanent Chancellor is appointed. Dr. Carroll also complimented Student Trustee Laura Benavidez on recently being honored by Assembly Speaker Emeritus Toni Atkins for her “exemplary leadership.” Student Trustee Laura Benavidez reported on various student activities taking place throughout the District. At City College, the Associated Student Government (ASG) supported activities including the second annual Social Justice Conference, a student voter registration campaign, and an upcoming open house event. At Mesa College, students participated in the National Student Advocacy Conference in Washington, D.C. and the ASG is reviewing scholarship applications; at Miramar College, students promoted the “Rock the Vote” campaign, and are planning Club Rush and Spring Fest events. At Continuing Education, the Associated Student Body supported “Coffee with Cops” events at two campuses and the César E.
