BOARD REPORT FEBRUARY 14, 2019 SPECIAL REPORT TO THE PUBLIC Trustee Sean Elo reported that he recently attended the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) National Legislative Summit in Washington, DC, and stated that he appreciates the District’s participation in the conference and advocacy meetings that provide opportunities to advance its agenda at a national level. Trustee Mary Graham also reported on her participation at the ACCT conference and was encouraged by the positive discussions which included a commitment to all students, with particular respect and support for DACA students. Trustee Craig Milgrim said that as a faculty member he has experienced several interesting weeks this semester and that he is encouraged to remain focused on students. Trustee Bernie Rhinerson reported that he attended ACCT conference and that the proposed resolution that he submitted to the ACCT Board of Trustees, which he serves on, in support of the community college baccalaureate was adopted. He also reported that each college and Continuing Education will once again receive $2,000 from the Scott A and Elizabeth V Christensen Charitable Foundation to support the Board of Trustees Scholarship Chancellor Constance Carroll reported on the recent Legislative Summit in Washington, DC, sponsored by the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT). She indicated the she attended the Summit along with Trustees Bernie Rhinerson, Mary Graham, and Sean Elo, Communications Director Jack Beresford, and Executive Assistant Margaret Lamb. They were able to meet with a variety of legislative staff, as well as with several key legislators themselves, including Senators Dianne Feinstein and Kamala Harris, as well as Representatives Susan Davis and Scott Peters. Their advocacy message included such topics as Pell grants, accreditation issues, and the DACA program. The Chancellor also noted SB 291 (Leyva) that would expand financial aid for community college students to include a broader range of support. Dr. Carroll indicated that Spring enrollment was doing well, with the colleges having reached 95% of their 14,335 FTES target, with late-starting classes and dual-enrollment classes in the high schools still to be added. Although it is still early for Continuing Education enrollment data, the District seems to be securely on track for its annual target of 40,004 FTES. Student Trustee Alana Mahal Bermodes expressed her pride in Miramar College’s support of students, reported that Mesa College is participating in the American Student Association of Community Colleges 35th National Student Advocacy Conference in Washington, DC, March 9-12, 2019, and shared that City College’s Commencement will be held May 24, 2019.

The governing board of the San Diego Community College District is composed of 5 elected members and 1 student trustee position. The student trustee position is filled on a rotating basis. BOARD ACTIONS At its meeting of February 14, 2019, the Board of Trustees: •

Held a campus meeting for Miramar College that included a welcome and introduction by President Patricia Hsieh, Academic Senate President Marie McMahon, Classified Senate President Terrie Hubbard, and Associated Student Government President Alana Mahal Bermodes; a presentation on the Career Services Center by Associate Dean Benjamin Gamboa, Career Counselor Mona Patel, student Ryan Fischer, and Hawthorne Caterpillar Vice President Kirk Fowkes; and a presentation on the Fire Technology and Emergency Medical Technician Program by Program Chair Darren Hall, students Leah Ouimet and Chad Jeremiah, and Cal Fire, San Diego Fire Chief Tony Mecham.
