Combined as a $89.2 million dual classroom building project, the future buildings are on track to obtain a Leadership inEnergy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC).

SPECIAL FEATURES Landscaping and streetscape treatments are designed to blend City College with the surrounding East Village streets in Centre City, with respect to the street tree guidelines established for the downtown area by the Center City Development Corporation (CCDC).

PROJECT DESCRIPTION The new Arts & Humanities building will consist of approximately 128,000 square feet of new construction for the Arts and Humanities department; including new space for Visual Arts, English, ESOL, Speech and Foreign Language, Honors, World Cultures, and City Works programs. The building will include new classrooms, a lecture hall, computer labs, and studio space for drawing, ceramics, sculpture, and graphics. There will be a 99 seat “black box” theater with drama classrooms and a dressing room, and related offices and space for faculty and support staff. Additionally, the project will include a new sublevel parking area designated for ADA and faculty. The exterior areas will include a kiln yard, a sculpture garden and display area, and gathering space for students and faculty. The new Business Technology building will consist of approximately 62,000 square feet of new construction for thebusiness department; including new space for Business Studies, the Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) program, Business and Computer Systems, common areas and associated support space for faculty and staff. The project will include seven computer labs, classrooms, a lecture hall, and areas for start up businesses for students in the Business Education program.

All plants will be selected based on criteria that consider their drought tolerance and compatibility with the downtown climate. Landscaping will use a high efficiency Entry perspective irrigation system.

SUSTAINABLE FEATURES All classrooms make extensive use of natural daylight, minimizing energy use and maximizing student and faculty connection to the outdoors. The planning and design of the site creates a pedestrian gateway for City College, with a series of public courtyards providing student gathering space as well as a processional circulation route through the site. The project takes an innovative approach to storm water management by returning the water to the ground and minimizing the amount of storm water that reaches the City’s storm drain system. Projected energy savings of 572 460 kilowatt hours are 25% better than state requirements. Water efficient plumbing, irrigation and landscape will result in a water savings of 40% on the building use and 50% on landscape.
