All of these routes are the next step in helping your young person prepare for work or university. FE is free to all young people starting a course if they are aged 19 or under on 31st August prior to them starting college. However there may be additional costs for kit, uniform and trips.

What is Further Education (FE)?

Come & visit us!

We host a number of open events throughout the year at each of our campuses! This is a fantastic chance for you to visit with your young person, have a look around, chat to our tutors and get to know us a little better. Don’t worry if you can’t make it to one of our events, book a campus tour or you can watch our virtual events from the comfort of your own home.

The safety and wellbeing of our students has always been our top priority. When your young person starts their journey with us, they will be allocated a personal tutor who will be their main contact for any questions, concerns, or problems. Our Safeguarding teams ensure that your young person is safe and protected. Our Wellbeing mentors provide a safe space for student’s to seek advice and support about any issues they may be facing, whether it’s college related or something more personal.

PARENTAL GUIDANCE.

Your young person is getting ready to enter the next stage in their education journey, ‘FE’. FE stands for Further Education, as that is exactly what they are doing after school. This is their chance to specialise in the area or industry that most interests them.

www.escg.ac.uk 030 300 39699 38

This can either be through Vocational courses such as Diplomas and T-Levels, a more hands-on approach through an Apprenticeship, or three A-Level subjects.

Choosing the right course(s)

Safety & Wellbeing.

There are many qualifications to choose from at East Sussex College. Your young person may already know what they’d like to study, but don’t worry if they’re still undecided. Our highly qualified team can talk through all the options - looking at things like predicted grades, personal interests, and future goals. Our careers advisors are also on hand to guide and recommend next steps after college.

PARENTAL GUIDANCE

Our Eastbourne campus is on Cross Levels Way and has regular buses coming from Eastbourne town centre. It is also a short walk from Hampden Park train station.

If your young person didn’t manage to achieve a Grade 4 in GCSE Maths or English, then they will be able to retake them at college. Depending on their grade and the outcome of a short assessment, we’ll be able to enrol students on the right level of course ensuring they can work towards gaining either a Functional Skills or GCSE qualification.

As a student of ESC, your young person is expected to treat others with respect.

Education & Inclusivity for all!

As a college, we continually strive to ensure our college environment promotes diversity, respect, and inclusivity. We collectively recognise the value that disability, gender, race, sexuality, faith, culture, age, and background bring to our college. We strive to produce a work and learning environment that is safe and free from all forms of discrimation.

Getting to our campuses is really easy!

Our Ore Valley campus is a very short walk from Ore Valley train station, and our Automotive Training Centre is on the main bus route along The Ridge.

If your young person requires any additional support then our Additional Learning Support (ALS) team can help. They’re an incredibly important part of our college and can help with things such as learning difficulties and disabilities, inclass support, and assistive technology.

This includes the addition of Ground Source Heat Pumps (Ore Valley, Eastbourne and Lewes) and Air Source Heat Pumps (Station Plaza and Lewes).

“OHM brings 20 years’ commercial experience to the project, delivering the training so students can enter the workplace with the knowledge required. We are mindful that there are not enough educated engineers in renewable energy. We bring in our experience to change that.”

- Jason Lindfield, Managing Director, OHM Energy.

East Sussex College was selected to establish one of five new decarbonisation academies across Sussex to support the development of skills in retrofitting and green energy installation.

Entry Requirements

Our general entry requirements to study 4 A-Levels are: 6 GCSEs grade 4-9 including English Language and Maths at grade 6. Subject specific entry criteria may also apply.

UNIVERSITY - A-Levels are the most common route to university. If you want to study a degree, it is useful to look ahead at the courses that you are interested in as this often helps you figure out which A-Levels to take. We regularly run UCAS surgeries to give course advice and help you with writing your application and personal statement.

A-levels are perfect for helping you get into university!

Look out for this badge! A mixed study programme combines A-Levels and Technical and Professional courses, giving you a wide range of progression opportunities.

All of our courses provide fantastic progression opportunities, whether your goal is going away to university or staying local to study your Degree here with us. You may also be considering an Apprenticeship or entering fulltime employment. Our A-Levels give students excellent and varied progression opportunities.

APPRENTICESHIPS - Once you have finished your A-Levels, you could start an Apprenticeship. The introduction of Higher Apprenticeships a couple of years ago, means that you will now have an opportunity to study up to the equivalent level of a Degree.

WORK - Students may be able to find full-time positions in a number of organisations that relate to the subject they have studied, thanks to their work experience placements. In the past, students have gone to work for local banks, accountancy firms, solicitors, and language schools.

Advanced Level qualifications, better known as A-Levels, are two-year courses that are perfect for helping you get into university.

www.escg.ac.uk 030 300 39699 42

What next?

Our general entry requirements to study 3 A-Levels are: 5 GCSEs grade 4-9 including English Language and/or Maths at grade 5.

WHAT ARE A-LEVELS?

Most students choose to study three A-Levels or equivalent (such as a combination of A-Levels and BTECs/other Technical and Professional courses). Our A-Level programme follows the linear structure which means your exams will be at the end of your two years, rather than at the end of each module or year.

T-Levels are a two-year qualification for 16-to-19-year-olds. T-Levels are continuing to develop and expand since their introduction in 2020.

Our fantastic T-Level courses provide a wide-range of progression opportunities, including a pathway to university or one of our Degree courses, a route directly to full-time employment, or an Apprenticeship to extend your knowledge even further.

There are lots of quiet spaces for you to work outside of class as well.

Once you have gained an extensive range of skills and have specialised in your industry, you will be ready to start your career. You may also consider heading off to university or starting an Apprenticeship to further your knowledge.

Our Technical & Professional courses are a great way to get a hands-on education ready for your chosen industry.

Designed with employers, each T-Level is equivalent to three A-Levels and will help young people develop the knowledge, attitude and practical skills to thrive in the workplace. At the heart of each course, a 45-day industry placement will give you early access to the industry.

WORK - We have worked with key employers to help shape the things that you learn during your time with us. That means, once you have finished your course, you will have developed the key knowledge, skills, and behaviours that employers are looking for - making you a prime candidate for employment after college.

UNIVERSITY - Once you’ve specialised in one of our Level 3 courses, they often give you enough UCAS points to get into university. We’ve got a great track record of helping our Vocational students get into university so they can gain even more knowledge in their chosen subject.

Technical & Professional Entry Requirements

Opportunities

What next?

APPRENTICESHIPS - Once you have completed your course, you may want to start an Apprenticeship. You will be able to continue studying while earning a wage, and depending on your industry and level, you may be able to go in at Level 3 and work up to Degree level.

www.escg.ac.uk 030 300 39699 90

To join most Level 3 courses, you will need a minimum of five GCSEs grade 4-9. Entry onto Level 2 courses require a minimum of four GCSEs grade 3-9. Subject specific entry criteria may also apply.

What next?

UNIVERSITY - As you will be able to achieve the equivalent grade to three A-Levels after completing your T-Level, university is also a possibility. You may wish to specialise in a certain area such as architecture, cyber security, or complete a teaching degree!

WORK - After completing a T-Level you will be fully equipped to start your career in your chosen industry which means your natural progression route would be into full-time employment.

Opportunities

We have designed our courses so that you gain the right skills you need to secure employment once you’ve finished college.

What are T-Levels?

APPRENTICESHIPS - You may wish to continue learning, in which case an Apprenticeship would be a seamless transition. Depending on your chosen employer and the existing level of the Apprenticeship you’d like to study, it may be possible for you to start a higher Apprenticeship at Level 4, 5, or even 6 - the equivalent of a degree!

exciting Level 2 course will teach you

You will learn on the job and gain a qualification at the same time. Some Apprenticeships are known as day-release where you will come to one of East Sussex College’s campuses to study, typically once a week and the rest of the time you will work with your employer. On the other hand, you may complete a work-based Apprenticeship where you won’t come to college and instead an assessor will visit the workplace every four weeks.

WHAT APPRENTICESHIPS?ARE

An Apprenticeship is a real-job, with a real employer, typically working a minimum of 30 hours per week.t is an Apprenticeship?

www.escg.ac.uk 030 300 39699 170

Apprenticeships are suitable for anyone 16+, that has finished secondary education and lives in the UK. Apprenticeships are suitable for those already in employment, school leavers or adults.

Adults.

If you are 16 - 18 then you will have to remain in education and an Apprenticeship counts as a form of full-time education. It is a way to break into your desired industry, gain a qualification and gain work experience in your chosen field. As an apprentice you will be paid for your time at work, as well as the time you spend studying.

www.escg.ac.uk 030 300 39699 172

Our Apprenticeships.

Many adults use an Apprenticeship as a way to break into a new industry or build upon their existing skills, in a current job role. You will be able to progress in your career without paying for the qualification and you will be able to sign up to the Apprenticeship scheme regardless of age.

Employed.

Many of our existing apprentices are already in employment and approach the college to gain a qualification whilst staying in their existing job role. It can be a way to upskill and gain a nationally recognised qualification, which is beneficial for career development.

An Apprenticeship is a real-job, with a real employer, typically working a minimum of 30 hours per week.

School Leavers.

APPRENTICESHIPS.

If you are 16 - 18, we recommend that you apply for a full-time course just in case you can’t secure an Apprenticeship.

We can ring the employer with more information if they would like to take you on.

There are a few ways to find an Apprenticeship, Optionincluding:1:

@WeAreESCG TECHNICAL & PROFESSIONAL COURSES INCLUDING T-LEVELS 173

SCAN HERE TO... find out more about our Apprenticeships.

Option 3: Look on the National Apprenticeship Website: All the live Apprenticeship vacancies are on this

How do I find an Apprenticeship?

You will need to find out who the manager/owner of the company is so that your details are sent to the relevant person.

Option 2: Register for the Talent Bank: It may be useful for you to attend a remote Apprenticeship Information Session at East Sussex College, currently running over Zoom. We will run through any questions that you may have and explain Apprenticeships in further detail. We will also keep you on record on our Talent Bank in case any vacancies come up that may be of interest.

Find your own employer: You can start with this option at any time if you hope to secure an Apprenticeship. Offering to do some work experience may be a good way forward as you could then try and turn it into an Apprenticeship.

apply for anything. If you decide to apply you’ll need to complete an application form - fill this in with as much detail as you can as these are used to decide who to shortlist and put forward to employers. Put down any qualifications you already have and be honest about all of the information you include.

Start putting together a CV. If you don’t already have one, start by Googling ‘write my CV’ and you will get lots of ideas. It should be no more than two pages.

APPRENTICESHIPS

Maths and English Functional Skills will be included alongside the Apprenticeship if you don’t have GCSE grades 4 or above, or Level 2 Functional Skills, regardless of age. You will be asked to provide certificates if you do have GCSEs so we can make you exempt. Functional Skills are very practical qualifications, and the aim is that they apply to your working life and personal life.

An apprentice is a real job.

Gain a qualification.

If you are employed for at least 30 hours per week, six hours of your working week will be spent on training. Training will be made up of lots of elements, but essentially you will be asked to record any activities where you are learning a skill relevant to the job role. Forms of training include day-release to college, putting together your portfolio of evidence, written work, meetings with your assessor, observing other members of staff (shadowing), being mentored by other members of staff, competitions, mock assessments, industry events or conferences and so on. You will also be paid for this training.

At the end of the Apprenticeship, you will receive a certificate confirming that you have the relevant skills, knowledge and behaviours for your specific job role. We offer a range of Apprenticeships at different levels.

SCAN HERE TO... find out more about our Apprenticeships.

KEY FACTS

You will be employed, with a contract of employment provided by an employer. The contract of employment should last at least the duration of the Apprenticeship and you cannot be self-employed. Because you are employed you will benefit from holiday pay and sick leave and are subject to statutory employment rights and responsibilities as per any person of employed status.

Maths & English.

How long does an Apprenticeship last?

Off-the-job training.

All the College’s Apprenticeships last between 1-4 years, depending on your chosen Apprenticeship. Any approved prior learning you may have may also mean the programme length is reduced, depending on what you can evidence and experience in the subject of interest.

Train - debt free!

The level you complete will be based upon your responsibilities within your day-to-day job role. Many of our apprentices start at a lower level and may complete more than one Apprenticeship, as they work their way up with a company and into higher level education.

With an Apprenticeship you must be paid at least the Minimum National Apprenticeship wage. If you turn 19 in the second year of your Apprenticeship, you must then be paid minimum wage for your age.

As an apprentice you will never be asked to pay towards the cost of the qualification. This means that you will never have to take out a student loan, but you will have the benefits of still gaining a formal qualification.

Earn a salary.
