Our Health, Care and Sport courses, based at Station Plaza, are some of the best in the South East.

Our expert tutors have an incredible amount of knowledge. Some still work in the industry, which means their knowledge is always current and up to date. When you combine that with our pioneering and exciting industry placements, like working in the operating theatres of the Conquest Hospital, you will be able to learn all the key knowledge, skills, and behaviours you need for a successful career in the industry.

Construction & Engineering:

Our Ore Valley campus is home to our Construction and Engineering courses. The campus features 7,000sq ft of realistic working environments, with live-build areas and workshops that mirror those you will find out in the industry.

The workshops are crammed with industry-standard tools, machinery and equipment - so you can learn the exact skills you need for your trade. We’re really lucky to have some of the best engineering workshops in the area, packed with lathes, milling machines and welding bays.

Creative Industries:

Our Creative courses are based on the fourth floor at Station Plaza. We have everything you need to explore your subject and let your creativity flow.

We have printing presses, pottery wheels, kilns, metal workshops, photography studios, a darkroom, sewing machines, and the latest adobe software for animation and digital work.

We’re passionate about empowering you so you can take action, stand up for the things you believe in, and strive to be the best you can. Our college is a mature environment where you will be responsible for your own learning. What you put in will be what you get out. College is very different from school. You are our number one focus, but we’re also passionate about doing our bit to protect the planet. Over the past few years, we have been installing energy efficient bulbs in all of our buildings, we have increased the number of recycling points across campus for you to recycle and and we are committed to reducing the amount of single-use plastic in our canteens and coffee shops.

But that’s not all...

Our magnificent buildings, here in Hastings, use greener energy. Station Plaza is fitted with a Ground Heat Source System which efficiently reuses energy to keep the building cool in the summer and warm in the winter, and our Ore Valley campus roof has solar panels to harness the power of the sun to produce 70% of its electricity.

But one of the most significant change we’ve made is taking steps to offset our carbon footprint. We have planted 6,000 hardwood trees to capture at least 60,000 tonnes of CO2.

No matter which course you choose, we will give you opportunities to complete meaningful work placements, allowing you to put everything you have learnt into practicein real situations.

We have hundreds of contacts across a multitude of industries so you can ignite your imagination and be well on your way to starting that dream career.

We are constantly building new partnerships. Recently, we placed over 15 Health and Social Care students into local hospitals so they can get first-hand experience in operating theatres.

Our Make-Up Artistry students finetune their talents in our salons, and then provide hair and make-up for touring actors at the Stables Theatre and Arts Centre.

Our Public Services students work with local services such as Hastings Fire Station to find out more about their roles and responsibilities, and each November, our students work very closely with local war veterans to arrange and host Remembrance Parades.

Construction students enjoy lots of industry placements, including on-site work with huge housing developers like Barratt Homes.

Our Creative Media students are given the chance to create promotional and factual videos for local clients such as Hastings Borough Council and local newspaper, Hastings Independent Press.

We have a thriving Student Experience team in Hastings who organise lots of fun trips, challenges and events every year, including the NUTS challenge - a tough mudder of an assault course.

Our Football Academy, in partnership with Hastings United, is flying right now. Celebrating success last year, the men’s team competes at the top level of college football. We celebrate footballing excellence throughout the college, so no matter which subject you study, there is the potential to break through into the Hastings United first team - for both men and women.

Our Art and Design students celebrate the end of each year with a week-long art show, utilising our incredible Station Plaza space. They transform classrooms into pop-up galleries and then invite family, friends and local artists in to marvel at their workmaking valuable connections for the future.

Our modern and impressive Plaza Hair and Beauty Salon helps get our students ready for a career in the industry. We have an abundance of styling tools and products, comfortable styling chairs, manicure stations, and massage beds. The best bit - we have our own luxury spa, complete with a sauna and Jacuzzi. You won’t find these facilities at any other college in the South East.

Station Plaza is also home to our impressive training kitchen and one of Hastings’ favourite places to eat: Coast Restaurant.

Our on-site gym is run by our Sports department and offers discounted rates for all of our students.

Our fourth floor, which is dedicated to the arts, is packed with modern and traditional equipment, such as printing presses, kilns, and a darkroomall geared up to satisfy your creativity.

Over at Ore Valley, the construction trades come to life with 7,000 square feet of live-build areas and workshops. Our engineering students are able to finetune their skills in milling, turning, and welding, while also enhancing their Computer Aided Design skills.

Our third impressive campus is home to our Motor Vehicle courses, where students have the opportunity to repair cars and work on exciting projects like the Pavestone Rally.

We know that the learning you do outside of the classroom can be just as important as the things you learn in it. Industry trips, workshops and guest speakers are essential elements to our courses. That’s why we work hard to make sure these experiences are valuable and the best they can be. Opportunities to visit businesses and organisations related to your subject will help to expand your imagination and inspire you to reach your career goals.

Our Catering students visit London to see various street markets and peek inside some of the most prestigious hotels in the capital. They get to visit rural Michelin star restaurants and cater for fish lovers during the Hastings Seafood and Wine Festival.

Business students visit the Amex Stadium in Brighton for an insight into running a Premier League football club.

Our Sport & Public Service students love the outdoors and each year try out lots of extreme sports including rock climbing, coasteering and kayaking. Towards the end of the year, they camp and climb up one of the UK’s highest mountains, Snowdon.

Travel and Tourism students gain an insight into two of the world’s biggest airlines when they visit British Airways and the Emirates Experience. They also enjoy travelling abroad to soak up the culture in cities like Barcelona and Venice.

Our Care students have been to Budapest to visit orphanages and foundations that look after children from across Eastern Europe.

Our Art students get inspired by famous artists as they visit London galleries and exhibitions, and each year, one lucky student wins a two-week scholarship at an art school in New York.

And since 2017, over 300 of our students have been able to visit Seville for a month-long work experience placement. They work in businesses and sectors related to their courses, allowing them to learn a great deal about their subjects while experiencing the Spanish culture.

Your tutor will always be there to support you, but if you require any extra help with literacy or numeracy, need some 1-to-1 support or any extra resources, then our Additional Learning Support (ALS) team is here for you.

Our Wellbeing Team is also on hand to help you with any struggles you might have with college work, college life, or your personal life.

A-Level Student

What is Further Education (FE)?

Your young person is about to enter FEand you’ll probably hear this term a lot as they work through their final year of school. FE simply stands for Further Education, as that is exactly what they are doing after school. This is their chance to specialise in the area or industry that most interests them. This can either be through vocational courses such as Diplomas and T-Levels, a more hands-on approach through an apprenticeship or, for more academic students, three A-Level subjects. All of these routes are the next step in helping your young person prepare for work or university.

Choosing the right course

There are many qualifications to choose from at East Sussex College. Your young person may already know what they’d like to study, but don’t worry if they’re still undecided. There is plenty of help at hand so students can make the right choice. You can book a meeting over the phone, video call, or drop in to see us. Our highly qualified team can talk through all the options - looking at things like predicted grades, personal interests and future goals. Our careers advisors are also on hand to guide and recommend next steps after college.

The safety and wellbeing of our students is our top priority. When your young person starts with us, they will be allocated a personal tutor who will be their go-to person for any questions, concerns or problems. Our dedicated Safeguarding teams ensure that your young person is safe and protected. English and Maths

If your young person didn’t manage to achieve a Grade 4 in GCSE maths or English then they will be able to re-take them at college. Depending on their grade and the outcome of a short assessment, we’ll be able to enrol students onto the right level of course so they can work towards gaining either a Functional Skills or GCSE qualification.

Additional Learning Support

If your young person requires any additional support then our Additional Learning Support (ALS) team can help. They’re an incredibly important part of our college and can help with things such as learning difficulties and disabilities, in-class support, and assistive technology.

Financial Support

Students joining us from school, aged between 16 and 18, won’t have to pay any course or exam fees. There may be some additional costs for courses such as uniform, materials and equipment or trips, but students may be eligible for a grant or bursary. We can discuss this further during your young person’s interview or even at enrolment.

Travel

Getting to us is really easy. Our Station Plaza campus is right next to Hastings train and bus stations. Our Ore Valley campus is a very short walk from Ore train station, and our Automotive Training Centre is on the main bus route along the ridge.

If you travel by train then you can purchase the 16-17 save card for £30 per year. This card saves you 50% on all travel. Depending on your circumstances you may also be eligible for financial help towards the cost of travelling to college. Get in touch with our Admissions Team to find out more.

APPRENTICESHIPS WORK

Once you have finished your A-Levels, you could start an Apprenticeship. The introduction of Higher Apprenticeships a couple of years ago, means that you will now have an opportunity to study up to the equivalent level of a degree.

Once you’ve finished your A-Levels, you may decide that you’d like to start work and make a living for yourself. You can start to look for positions in companies that may relate to your subjects or perhaps utilise your industry placement contacts to gain employment.

Amazing opportunities to get you to university

You will be able to take advantage of our excellent links with local and national employers to gain valuable work experience in an industry related to your studies. Students have worked in a diverse range of businesses and organisations in the private, public and charity sector. These opportunities not only give you valuable hands-on experience, but it also looks great on your CV and UCAS application.

We often welcome university lecturers and industry experts into the college to give talks about their jobs, their industry, and to give you an insight into what the industry might look like in the future.

Fantastic Progression

We have a close-knit sixth form that has fantastic progression rates. This means you will have the opportunity to move onto the things that you want to do next.

You will also have the opportunity to get involved with lots of trips throughout the year. We put on coaches to the UCAS fairs in London and Brighton so you can find out more about university courses up and down the country. Our subject areas also organise course-related trips throughout the year. Our students often visit the capital to experience the Law courts, parliament, banks, marketing agencies, and tourist attractions.

We’re a Community

Our students always tell us how friendly and welcoming our sixth form is. It is a place where they’re able to meet new life-long friends and they are able to mature and gain independence. The feel of the large, modern building, the interaction with the tutors, and the in-depth subject knowledge is the perfect stepping stone to university.

As we mentioned earlier, there are plenty of activities for you to get involved with outside of the classroom. Whether it is joining one of our sports academies, becoming a student rep, or starting your own society there is plenty to keep you busy.

Tutorial system

A Sixth Form education requires determination and hard work and we realise that support outside of the classroom is essential to enable you to succeed. When you enrol with us you will be assigned a tutor. They will be aligned with the subject you have chosen and be able to give you expert support and guidance with those subjects.

Academic support

We can provide academic support in the form of study and revision workshops. These take place throughout the year and more regularly as we approach exams season.

Backwards planning

Some of the best advice we’ve ever heard is to plan backwards. Work out a rough plan of what job you’d like to have in ten years. From there, you can look into the details of whether you’d need a degree, and what subjects you need to study at A-Level to get onto that degree.

Play to your strengths

There is nothing wrong with studying the subjects you’re good at. If you’re predicted 8s and 9s in English, then perhaps consider taking A-Level English Language & Literature.

Don’t get bored

The linear structure means that you’ll study A-Levels for two years. So it’s sensible to choose three subjects that you’re going to enjoy and maintain your interest in right up until the end.

Do your uni research

As well as researching the courses you want to study at uni, find out about the entry requirements you’ll need to get in. You’ll also be able to find out what facilities they have, what the student lifestyle is like, and whether you’d like to study there.

Facilitating subjects

If you’re the type of person that likes to keep their options open, then perhaps facilitating subjects could be a good option. Many of the top universities look for facilitating subjects, such as Geography, History, Physics, or French, because they equip you with critical thinking skills, the ability to research data, analyse data, and demonstrate your ability to learn and retain information.

My tutors are absolutely fantastic. They’re really good teachers, and they’re so helpful. You can talk to them about anything; it doesn’t have to be course-related. If you’re dealing with stuff, then they’re there for you.

During this course, you will use your love for reading to explore texts in depth with likeminded people. You will study a wide range of plays, novels and poetry, and discover some of the critical theory used to explore the different meanings of texts. The industry contributes £46.2 billion to the economy and represents 6% of total employment in the UK.

Our Care Services pathway consists of courses in Health and Social Care and enables you to learn a diverse range of skills in one of the most important industries in the country. You will learn key knowledge, practical skills, and behavioural qualities that will prepare you for a wide range of careers from youth work to dentistry.

Practical learning is a key part of our Health and Social Care courses which is why we give you the chance to undertake meaningful industry placements. You can complete up to 175 hours worth of work

placement within a huge range of industry settings such as Special Educational Needs Schools, daycare centres, GP surgeries, care homes and residential homes. Earlier this year, we piloted a new scheme with the Conquest Hospital to provide students with the opportunity to work in their operating theatres.

Our Sports courses will teach you all the knowledge and skills you need to start working in this exciting industry.

We have a range of exceptional facilities both on-site and nearby. Our on-site gym is modern and filled with a whole range of fitness equipment.

Our Beauty Therapy salons also allow our sports massage students to carry out massage treatments. Our partnerships with Summerfields Leisure Centre and Horntye Sports Complex mean that we have access

Our Inclusive Pathways programme is designed to help you reconnect with education. We will support you while you build your confidence to help you progress onto a mainstream college course. We can put together a personalised plan to help you improve your academic abilities, including maths and English if necessary, build your experience in the workplace, and teach you a range of essential life skills.

The main focus will be to develop social, personal and ethical work skills. You will also gain an understanding of healthy living, participating in leisure, understanding diversity, awareness of alcohol and drug misuse, understanding law and order, independent living, career planning and employability.

Once you have completed this course, you will be ready to move into mainstream college education.

If you are 16-19 years old and are keen to improve your GCSE grades so you can move onto college education or employment, this programme is for you. It’s a one-year programme aimed at those who have achieved below the required number of GCSE grades at 4 (C) or above and therefore have not been able to progress.

The English Language GCSE programme is designed to teach spelling, grammar, punctuation and a wide variety of literary techniques used in writing, getting you ready for your final exam.

The GCSE maths course teaches you to develop a range of mathematical skills and develop techniques in order to solve problems in mathematics. Covering Number, Algebra, Geometry and Statistics, the GCSE Mathematics course will teach you everything you need to be ready for the end of year exam.

The quickest and easiest way to apply to us is through our E-Prospectus. Visit careerseastsussex.co.uk to set up your profile, search for the college and your perfect course, then submit your application.

Through our website

You can apply to us online via our college website.

1. Visit www.escg.ac.uk

2. You will then be able to search for the course or courses that you’re interested in and then click ‘apply’. Make sure you select your course at the right campus.

3. You’ll then be taken to another page where you will be able to fill in an application form.

4. You will receive an automated email to say that we have received your application within 5 working days. If you have any problems please don’t hesitate to call and speak to one of our student advisors.

Pull out and fill in the application form opposite, using a black pen and writing in capitals. If you have any problems please contact our friendly admissions team on 030 300 39699, who will be happy to help.

Once you have completed the form, hand it to your current school or college for completion. Your School will have to fill out the reference form part of the application for you. Check with your school whether they want to send it back to us, along with the application form, or if they expect you to.

Submit your application before the end of December. We will accept applications into the new year but getting your application in early means you’ll have the best chance of securing your place with us.

Can’t make up your mind?

If you can’t decide on a course, don’t panic. You can apply for more than one course on your application form. You will have the chance to discuss your options with us at interview. We also offer bookable careers guidance appointments for you to explore your options. The most important thing is you eventually enrol on the course that’s right for you - we are here to help you.

Course cancellations

In the unlikely event that your course is cancelled, we will do our best to find you an alternative course to help you succeed in your career ambitions. Where possible, any payments towards the cost of your course can be transferred to your new course. Any refunds will be credited by bank transfer (BACS) to your bank account.

Interviews

If we have all the information we need on your application form, we will invite you to an interview. The sooner you submit your application, the sooner you’ll receive an interview. You will receive a letter/email telling you what you will need to bring with you on your allocated day and time. As a general rule, interviews are held weekly. The interview is a good opportunity to find out more about your chosen subject(s) and will give you more information and make sure you are considering the right course for your future. Your parents/carers are welcome to come with you.

Offers

At the end of your interview, you will be given written confirmation of your offer and exam grades (or other requirements) you need to secure your place. Once your place is confirmed, you will continue to receive information about starting college and your journey to an exciting future will begin.

After your exam results in August, you will be invited to attend enrolment in late August or early September – this is when you officially become an East Sussex College student! You will need to bring in your exam results and we’ll contact you to tell you exactly when you start your course.
