Our college is a mature environment where you will be responsible for your own learning. What you put in will be what you get out. College is very different from school. Our Evolve Salons hold eco status, which means we are fully committed to looking after the environment and reducing our waste. All of our products are vegan, cruelty-free and don’t contain any harmful chemicals.

You are our number one focus, but we’re also passionate about doing our bit to protect the planet. Over the past few years, we have been installing energy efficient bulbs in all of our buildings, we have increased the number of recycling points across campus for you to recycle and we are committed to reducing the amount of single-use plastic in our canteens and coffee shops.

We are constantly building new partnerships. Recently, we placed over 15 Health and Social Care students into local hospitals so they can get first-hand experience in operating theatres.

Here in Lewes, our Childcare students enjoy first and second year placements in local schools and nurseries across the region to understand what it takes to become a practitioner. Our Sports students take advantage of our partnership with neighbouring Wave Leisure to help run fitness class and achieve lifeguard qualifications. Our Public Services students help organise and run Safety in Action week. Our Art and Design students take advantage of our fantastic contacts within the creative industry such as Theatre Royal Brighton for workshops and with our neighbours, Depot cinema, to exhibit showreels and short films. Built into our A-Level programme are workshops to boost employability and UCAS applications with Culture Shift. Entrepreneurial workshops also inspire our students to start their own business, just like Robert Stevens and Atlanta Hurley.

Are you ready to celebrate your success? We have a strong student voice at our Lewes campus. Our student council members are determined to make our college a better place and frequently come together to celebrate success and positive changes around campus. We offer over 30 clubs and societies, including politics, games and a vegan society. Our students are passionate about supporting and celebrating key awareness days, joining open days at universities, and having fun at theme parks too! Before the General Election, the Students’ Union organised a Hustings to ask local MPs why their party should become the country’s new government. Our students get to compete in national competitions too.

Kaiya Swain in 2017, and Rebecca West in 2019, were crowned the best young beauty therapists in the world at the WorldSkills Finals! 14

Cliffe Building is home to our vibrant and successful Sixth Form. We have comfortable classrooms and common rooms, libraries filled with resources, new science labs, and fully-equipped art studios to help you achieve academic excellence.

Our Performing Arts building, a purpose-built space which offers our students the opportunity to train and rehearse in Theatre, Dance and Music. We have studios fitted with full-length mirrors, lighting, and excellent sound systems. We also have our own theatre, which allows our budding actors the opportunity to put on a grand performance at the end of the year. We’re really fortunate in Lewes to be able to utilise the fantastic facilities that we have on our doorstep. Our Sports and Public Services students are able to train on the Lewes Football Club 3G all-weather pitch, use the gym and swimming pool at Wave Leisure as well as boost their CVs with leisure centre management and lifeguard qualifications.

Our tutors boast a wealth of academic excellence and have years of industry experience in their subjects. Before coming into teaching, they completed degrees, masters, and PhDs, to be experts in their field. Others ran their own business and worked for well established companies. A-Level English tutor and published author, Paul Fisher Davies studied his PhD while teaching and writing his first book: Comics as Communication. Our Early Years and Childcare guru, Carol Tomsett (top left) owned and ran a very successful nursery before joining us. Her extensive amount of knowledge in an Early Years setting is invaluable to help prepare our students. Public Services course leader, Carey Bridge (bottom left), has been running our course for over 20 years and has industry contacts in a multitude of services. Before teaching, Carey was part of the UK Border Force at Gatwick Airport, and uses her connections to arrange annual visits so students can get an insight into this protective service.

The learning that you do outside of the classroom...

INSPI We know that the learning you do outside of the classroom can be just as important as the things you learn in it. Industry trips, workshops and guest speakers are essential elements to our courses. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s why we work hard to make sure these experiences are valuable and the best they can be. Opportunities to visit businesses and organisations related to your subject will help to expand your imagination and inspire you to reach your career goals. Our students have visited some top cities in the UK and around the world to learn about history, culture, and tourism. Our Performing Arts students get to see the bright lights of Broadway as they visit New York to watch shows and take part in singing and dancing workshops. Visiting the Royal Albert Hall is grand enough, but our Music students actually got to perform at the prestigious venue some musicians can only dream of. 20

Our Public Services students are well travelled as they visit London to learn more about the Houses of Parliament, they visit Gatwick Airport to see what goes on behind the scenes, then jet off to Cyprus and New York to see public services in action. Our Sports students enjoy an annual Ski trip to Europe for a week on the slopes. Our Travel tutors say that the best way to learn about the subject is to travel, so our students are lucky enough to have the opportunity to visit lots of tourism businesses in the UK and go to some of the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best travel destinations. Most recently, they have been to the Emirates Experience and Barcelona.

And since 2017, over 300 of our students have been able to visit Seville for a month-long work experience placement. What is Further Education (FE)?

Choosing the right course

Your young person is about to enter FE and you’ll probably hear this term a lot as they work through their final year of school. FE simply stands for Further Education, as that is exactly what they are doing after school. This is their chance to specialise in the area or industry that most interests them. This can either be through vocational courses such as Diplomas and T-Levels, a more hands on approach through an apprenticeship or, for more academic students, three A-Level subjects. All of these routes are the next step in helping your young person prepare for work or university.

There are many qualifications to choose from at East Sussex College. Your young person may already know what they’d like to study, but don’t worry if they’re still undecided. There is plenty of help at hand so students can make the right choice. You can book a meeting over the phone, video call, or drop in to see us. Our highly qualified team can talk through all the options - looking at things like predicted grades, personal interests and future goals. When your young person starts with us, they will be allocated a personal tutor who will be their go-to person for any questions, concerns or problems. Our dedicated Safeguarding teams ensure that your young person is safe and protected. Our Wellbeing mentors provide a safe space to seek advice and support about any issues they may be facing, whether it’s college related or something more personal.

We host a number of open evenings throughout the year at each of our campuses and online! English and Maths If your young person didn’t manage to achieve a Grade 4 in GCSE maths or English then they will be able to re-take them at college. Depending on their grade and the outcome of a short assessment, we’ll be able to enrol students onto the right level of course so they can work towards gaining either a Functional Skills or GCSE qualification. Additional Learning Support If your young person requires any additional support then our Additional Learning Support (ALS) team can help. They’re an incredibly important part of our college and can help with things such as learning difficulties and disabilities, in-class support, and assistive technology. Financial Support Students joining us from school, aged between 16 and 18, won’t have to pay any course or exam fees. There may be some additional costs for courses such as uniform, materials and equipment or trips, but students may be eligible for a grant or bursary. Travel Getting to us is really easy. Our Lewes campus is along Mountfield Road and is right around the corner from Lewes train station and a short walk from Lewes bus station. If you travel by train then you can purchase the 16-17 save card for £30 per year. This card saves you 50% on all travel. We put on coaches to the UCAS fairs in London and Brighton, and our Student Union organises course-related trips throughout the year. Some of our exciting A-Level trips include visits to Law courts, parliament, banks, marketing agencies, and tourist attractions.

We have an extremely supportive sixth form with fantastic progression rates to some of the best universities in the country. This means you will have the opportunity to move onto the things that you want to do next.

Our students always tell us how friendly and welcoming our sixth form is. It is a place where they’re able to meet new life-long friends and they are able to mature and gain independence. The supportive student body, the interaction with the tutors, and the in-depth subject knowledge is the perfect stepping stone to university.

A Sixth Form education requires determination and hard work, and we realise that support outside of the classroom is essential to enable you to succeed. When you enrol with us, you will be assigned a tutor. They will be aligned with the subject you have chosen and be able to give you expert support and guidance with those subjects.

It’s not all work, work, work! As we mentioned earlier, there are plenty of activities for you to get involved with outside of the classroom. Whether it is joining one of our sports academies, becoming a student rep, or starting your own society, there is plenty to keep you busy.

Tutorial System

We can provide academic support in the form of study and revision workshops. These take place throughout the year and more regularly as we approach exams season.

If your goal is to head to university after A-Levels, then we’ll be able to support you with your UCAS application. Our careers advisors are qualified to Level 7 to give you the best careers advice and guidance. Make sure you sign up for our regular UCAS surgeries too. They give you help with setting up your account and writing personal statements.

Don’t know what you want to study? We can help! Backwards planning Some of the best advice we’ve ever heard is to plan backwards. Work out a rough plan of what job you’d like to have in ten years. From there, you can look into the details of whether you’d need a degree, and what subjects you need to study at A-Level to get onto that degree.

Play to your strengths There is nothing wrong with studying the subjects you’re good at. If you’re predicted 8s and 9s in English, then perhaps consider taking A-Level English Language & Literature.

Don’t get bored The linear structure means that you’ll study A-Levels for two years. So it’s sensible to choose three subjects that you’re going to enjoy and maintain your interest in right up until the end.

SPORT & FITNESS The Sport and Fitness industry is booming. It is at an all time high and is predicted to keep on growing. Experts say that by 2021 the industry will be worth well over £23 billion. In 2018, there were 189,000 people with sports and fitness occupations in employment in the UK. Our Sports courses utilise some of the best facilities in the area. We have an exceptional partnership with Wave Leisure and Lewes Football Club, which means that we’re able to offer you much more than just learning in the classroom. We have exclusive access to the football club’s allweather 3G sports pitch, and the leisure centre’s 400metre running track, swimming pool and gym. But our partnership doesn’t stop there. We can offer you hands-on experience of

the industry by working alongside Wave Leisure staff to help manage bookings, take fitness classes, recommend diet programmes, and help with sports injury rehabilitation. You will also have the opportunity to gain other valuable industry qualifications such as Sports Leadership Awards and Lifeguarding qualifications. As well as the practical side of the course, you will have the opportunity to see theory lessons come to life during visits, trips, and talks from industry professionals. Each year we visit the sport science facilities at the University of Brighton to take part in dissertation research, visit the Body Works exhibition in London, and enjoy our annual skiing trip to Austria.

Ready to apply? Submit your application before the end of December. We will accept applications into the new year but getting your application in early means you’ll have the best chance of securing your place with us.

Once you have completed the form, hand it to your current school or college for completion. Your School will have to fill out the reference form part of the application for you. Check with your school whether they want to send it back to us, along with the application form, or if they expect you to.

After your application... Can’t make up your mind?

Interviews

If you can’t decide on a course, don’t panic. You can apply for more than one course on your application form. You will have the chance to discuss your options with us at interview. We also offer bookable careers guidance appointments for you to explore your options. The most important thing is you eventually enrol on the course that’s right for you - we are here to help you.

If we have all the information we need on your application form, we will invite you to an interview. The sooner you submit your application, the sooner you’ll receive an interview. You will receive a letter/email telling you what you will need to bring with you on your allocated day and time. As a general rule, interviews are held weekly. The interview is a good opportunity to find out more about your chosen subject(s) and will give you more information and make sure you are considering the right course for your future. Your parents/carers are welcome to come with you.

Course cancellations In the unlikely event that your course is cancelled, we will do our best to find you an alternative course to help you succeed in your career ambitions. Where possible, any payments towards the cost of your course can be transferred to your new course. Any refunds will be credited by bank transfer (BACS) to your bank account.

Offers At the end of your interview, you will be given written confirmation of your offer and exam grades (or other requirements) you need to secure your place. Once your place is confirmed, you will continue to receive information about starting college and your journey to an exciting future will begin. After your exam results in August, you will be invited to attend enrolment in late August or early September – this is when you officially become an East Sussex College student! You will need to bring in your exam results and we’ll contact you to tell you exactly when you start your course.
