CLUB NEWS .....................................................3 SOUTH DAKOTA
2 THE BULLETIN OF THE SOUTH DAKOTA CHESS ASSOCIATION OCTOBER 2003
three board prizes and playing on three winning teams.Since the mid 1990s I have become moreof a tournament director than a tournament. In addition, I have emphasized scholastic chess in tournaments which I have directed.Below is list of the numbers of players at South Dakota Closed tournaments since I moved to South Dakota. The numbers havelways been low. In fact the SDCA Annual Meeting which used to be at the Closed was moved to the Teams because the Teams had higher. We tried to solve this problem by having a separate Junior tournament with a cheap entry to Juionrs who wanted to enter after their tournament was at end We ended the separate junior tournament in 2001. Since then numbers have been below 20. Maybe we need to look at the Closed. North Dakota has opened its Closed.South Dakota has not run an Open Championship since 1970. Nebraska runs a 6 person Closed championship where persons qualify by winning various tournaments. You can contact me at Wes Schmidt,2213 E.Tricia Lane,Sioux Falls,SD 57103, 6053392248emailsaschmidt@prodigy.net. if you have any suggestions on improving the Closed. I personally am going to recommend moving the Closed to Sioux Falls for next year.
