Fannie and William Payne Park dedicated in Pacific Beach By DAVE SCHWAB
S
an Diego Unified Board of Education President Richard Barrera joined San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria in dedicating the Pacific Beach Middle Joint-Use Field after Fannie and William Payne, AfricanAmerican educators who overcame adversity in the 1940s, at an Aug. 5 ceremony. Students and community representatives who advocated for the “Fannie and William Payne Joint-Use Field and Community Park” also spoke at the special event. “It is so important for our kids to know
that they have a voice and they can make a difference in their community,” said Kimberly Meng, PB Middle School principal. “That’s the purpose of education, giving our kids the tools and skills so they can make the world a better place. And this is a perfect example of it.” “It’s about coming together, wanting to learn and grow,” said PB resident Regina Sinsky-Crosby, who, along with Paige Hernandez, aided in the park renaming effort. “This renaming has been a year in the making, hundreds of emails, hours of Zoom meetings. This is Payne Park now. We got
this done.” “It’s a great park and we’re happy that this has righted a wrong,” said Marcella Bothwell, Pacific Beach Town Council president. “We can’t do a lot of things – but we can do this.” “It’s left a stain on the community that I’m happy to see now, 45 years later, that it is finally being addressed and rectified to try and erase that stain,” said Michel Anderson of San Diego Parks Foundation. “It’s long overdue.” Fannie and William Payne
