Midway planners upset at new homeless shelter proposal open a new homeless shelter soon in the now-vacant former Pier 1 Imports building at 3220 Sports Arena Blvd. “We’re proposing a much smaller shelter, 44 beds up to a maximum of 50, than other larger shelters in San Diego, which can house 150 to up to 324 beds at Golden Hall (downtown),” said Jones, who added residents under treatment would be allowed to leave the facility during the day. “Alpha Project (homeless providers) will be partnering with the City

idway-Pacific Highway Community planners are steamed about not being informed about plans for a homeless shelter in their neighborhood, or a local boutique hotel being used by the Department of Homeland Security for asylum seekers awaiting processing. and County to operate this shelter, which will be targeting some of the folks you see on the street today. Alpha Project will run day-to-day operations, provide onsite 24/7 security, and leverage other resources for shelter residents.” Jones added there would be a dedicated contact available at all times at the proposed shelter, and that there would be a hotline number area residents could call should problems arise. Jones’ presentation drew an angry response from planners and residents alike in Midway, which continues to be a high-profile and high-risk area for problematic

homelessness. “To say that we were all blindsided is an understatement,” said Midway plan chair Cathy Kenton expressing dismay that the community was not informed earlier about homeless shelter plans. “We have elderly people here that are so vulnerable in this neighborhood,” pointed out Midway planner Amy Stark, an employee at The Orchard Active Senior Living Apartments near the proposed homeless shelter. “Is there a way we can pull the plug on this if it’s not working out?” “I’m horrified to learn of this though I’m trying to be open-minded,” said Midway Planner Judy Holiday. “There are some pretty serious issues for this community coming from the homeless population, which is very

disruptive already to the quality of life for many of us. I can’t imagine another 45 people having the opportunity to come out and roam around in the residential community. This is not the right place.” Noting the new shelter is proposed to target the chronically unhoused and many with substance-abuse issues, Jones described the new proposed Midway homeless shelters as the first “harm reduction” facility of its kind in the City. “It would better meet people’s needs where they are,” she said. Jones said if all goes well and public officials sign off on the new shelter, that it could be up and operating as soon as November. Near the end of the meeting, Midway planning member Tod Howarth discussed being startled

on Sunday, Sept. 12 while witnessing a Department of Homeland Security bus entering the guarded gate and rolling in alongside outside popup tents at the recently fencedoff Wyndham Garden Hotel at 3737 Sports Arena Blvd. He approached a security guard noting he was a concerned local resident and community planner and asked what was up. “I was told it was none of my business,” said Howarth, adding he was directed to another guard at another gate where he repeated his questions and was told that “what was going on was confidential.” Howarth said he was outraged noting, “As far as I know the Midway board was never notified about any of this. This is our district. I expected a public notification, a head’s up,

or some courtesy or input request would have been warranted. People need to know.” “The information that I have from a briefing a member of our staff participated in previously is that this is a DHS facility for asylum seekers who are awaiting processing, which typically happens at a port of entry,” said Mary Anne Pintar, chief of staff for Congressman Scott Peters (CA-52). “These facilities don’t have the capacity for the current number of people presenting themselves at the border. Typically they are detained until they can be interviewed, given a hearing date, and cleared for release.” Pintar had no further information as to how long, or how many, people were being temporarily held by the DHS at the Wyndham Garden Hotel.

Mayor and HUD secretary launch initiative to address homelessness Mayor Todd Gloria on Sept. 20 joined U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Marcia L. Fudge at a virtual event to launch House America: An All-Hands-On-Deck Effort to Address the Nation’s Homelessness Crisis. House America is a national partnership under which HUD and the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH) invite mayors, county leaders, Tribal nation leaders and governors to use the historic investments provided through the American Rescue Plan to address the crisis of homelessness. This partnership uses a Housing First approach while immediately

rehousing and building additional homes for those experiencing homelessness. House America is the federal government’s direct response to the homelessness crisis, which was rising even before the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic. In March, HUD released part one of its 2020 Annual Homeless Assessment Report to Congress, which found that more than 580,000 people experienced homelessness in the United States on a single night in January 2020, prior to the pandemic. COVID-19 has created greater urgency to address homelessness, given the heightened risks faced by people experiencing homelessness, while simultaneously

slowing rehousing activities due to capacity issues and impacts on rental-market vacancies. Through the American Rescue Plan, the City of San Diego received 480 emergency housing vouchers and $21 million in HOME Investment Partnerships grants to connect more residents to stable homes. As a member of House America, San Diego will partner with HUD to use these American Rescue Plan resources and other state and local dollars to rehouse 2,065 households and add 1,053 new units of affordable housing into the development pipeline by Dec. 31, 2022.

NEWS 4 100-year-old Canary Islands dragon tree leaves Ocean Beach FRIDAY · September 24, 2021

THE PENINSULA BEACON

By DAVE SCHWAB | The Beacon

DRAGON TREE TRIVIA

A

towering century-old Canary Islands dragon tree is gone from Ocean Beach but will never be forgotten. “We always took our daughter’s picture in front of that tree the first day of school,” said an almost tearful Denise Seymour, who lives on Long Branch Avenue. But the Seymours were remodeling their home and the dragon tree crowding it just didn’t fit into their plans. But instead of cutting it down, the family opted to save the tree instead. They got movers out of Los Angeles to come down and spend the better part of 30 hours digging up and boxing the tree with heavy equipment, before whisking it away. The Canary Islands dragon tree has since been transplanted to a nursery where it will be tended to until its new owner, Senna Tree Co. in Sun Valley, Calif., finds a new forever home for it. “This tree is spectacular, it’s huge,” said John Mote Sr., who, along with his son John Mote Jr., runs the tree-moving business specializing in especially large specimens. “She (Seymour) was smart enough to see the value in it.” Asked if Senna was a tree “matchmaker” finding proper adoptive homes for spared trees, Mote chuckled saying he’d never thought of it that way. “It’s fun,” Mote said of moving trees as a profession. “It’s kind of like going on a safari where no animals get hurt. This is the fun part of the business. We transplant trees

– The Canary Islands dragon tree is a member of the asparagus family. – The Guanche people of the Canary Islands used the sap in their mummification processes. – In Ancient Rome, “sangre de drago” was used as a colorant. Across Europe it has been used as a varnish and anti-oxidant for iron tools. – The tree also played a role in the Greek myth, “The Eleventh Labour of Hercules: The Apples of the Hespérides.” After Landon, a hundred-headed dragon, is slain, red blood flowed out upon the land and from it sprung up the trees now known as dragon trees.

of any size. But due to economics, we focus more on the large mature trees. We have a nursery where we collect displaced trees, usually from development. We end up finding new homes for them. Over 36 years you move and save a lot of trees. That’s what we do.” Pointing out their dragon tree was always too close to their home, which was originally built in 1919, Seymour needed a reputable company to do the job. She found one in Senna Tree Co. searching

online. She discovered Senna was in the Guinness Book of World records for the largest tree successfully moved on Earth. That tree, a 916,000-pound Valley Oak with an 84 inches trunk diameter and 100 feet spread, was moved in 2002 and still thrives today. The decision to reach out to Senna to move their tree then became something of a no-brainer. “I texted John and asked if he’d send someone down to look at the tree and he said he was sending his

son,” Seymour said she found the subsequent tree packaging and removal process to be fascinating. “The day after Labor Day they (Senna) came down and it was a four-day process with three guys they called their ‘A team,’” said Seymour of the undertaking, which involved the use of a huge backhoe and crane. “On the fourth day, they lifted the tree boxed in on all sides out as I watched from my deck upstairs. That tree weighed 16 tons. The head crown of the tree was 12 tons, 2,400 pounds. Then a semi-truck took the tree away on the final day.” A large transplanted specimen tree like hers will likely be bought by “a very wealthy person,” said Seymour, who added she was told a tree of that size can resell in the $30,000

to $50,000 range, given how many hours, and how much heavy equipment, went into moving it. Mote started his tree-removal business with just two experienced hands adding “we just grew year after year. We now do $5.25 million to $5.5 million in sales a year, and 70% of that is moving trees out of the way of development.” Mote works all over California and Nevada and has handled lots of work for casinos. He said homes he finds for transplanted trees generally are with wealthy people. He noted some of those adopting such trees come from Hollywood. “I’ve worked for a lot of movie actors and famous people and businesses,” Mote said. “I’ve found that people who have been blessed with a lot of wealth, really want to save as many trees as they can.” said Seymour, “They took a huge gamble to save this tree moving it, and their gamble is going to pay off. I am so happy this tree will get to live on for hopefully another 100 years where it has the space it needs.”

man who is charged with trying to rob two tellers at an Ocean Beach bank was released from jail Sept. 17 after a year in custody. The case against Lawon Andre Washington, 28, has not gone very far since the Sept. 3, 2020, incident at the Chase Bank on Sunset Cliffs Boulevard because criminal proceedings were suspended for awhile after a judge found him mentally incompetent. Washington’s attorney persuaded San Diego Superior Court Judge Joseph Brannigan to release him on his own recognizance Sept. 16 while a prosecutor opposed that request. His bail had been set at $100,000. Brannigan ordered Washington to stay away from all banks on condition of his release unless he was doing personal bank business, according to court records.

A preliminary hearing is set for Sept. 24. Washington has pleaded not guilty, and he is accused of two counts of attempted robbery. Washington allegedly walked into the bank near Newport Avenue just before noon and asked for cash and access to a vault. A bank manager secured employees and Washington didn’t get any money. There was a brief stand-off with police officers outside the bank after he walked outside and then quickly walked back inside. Washington later surrendered after he walked out of an emergency exit door. His attorney had argued in October 2020 that she thought he might not be mentally competent, and a judge sent him to Patton State Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation. Another judge read two reports from psychologists about his stay at Patton and ruled Sept. 13 he was mentally competent so criminal proceedings were resumed, court records say.

High Tech High students and volunteers map out heat By DAVE SCHWAB | The Beacon

H

igh Tech High students at Liberty Station and other volunteers region-wide participated recently in a one-day, heat-mapping event. Volunteers gathered temperature information to educate residents and help inform future decisions made on heat mitigation in the battle against climate change. On Sept. 13, dozens of volunteers and citizen scientists mounted heat sensors to their cars or bikes and traveled along designated routes to collect thousands of temperature and humidity data points in the morning, afternoon, and evening. Heat-mapping volunteer Tara Mills was one participant. “We went on a designated trail three times that day in hour-long increments in Otay Mesa with this device sticking out of the window of our car driving at 10 to 15 mph,” she said. “It was just fun to get out and do something meaningful and help [the City] gather data against climate change. It was a little adventure, a break from the norm.” Heat mapping was done by the City, in partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and The San Diego Foundation. Data collected will be used to create high-resolution

maps showing heat distribution region-wide. City planners will now use these maps to help inform the ongoing development of the Climate Resilient SD plan addressing how San Diego can prepare for a changing climate and build greener, safer, and more sustainable communities. It’s all related to the Climate Action Plan passed by the City in 2015, which is now being updated. That plan sets goals for the City to eliminate half of all greenhouse emissions and sourcing all energy from renewable sources by 2035. “The Climate Resiliency plan acknowledges that climate change is occurring and develops strategies to not only adapt, but thrive in a changing climate,” said Heidi Vonblum, deputy director, City of San Diego Planning Department. Vonblum said the City and its partners are addressing four primary issues in adapting to climate change: extreme heat, wildfi res, flooding/drought, and sea-level rise. Early results indicate widely varying extreme heat levels Citywide, with underrepresented communities most impacted. “A lot of our communities have older housing stock, which means they don’t have air conditioning, and those happen to be in the same locations where we’re seeing the high extreme heat days,” noted

Now accepting applications for the ‘21-’22 School Year!

Vonblum. “Our heat-mapping event focused on our extreme heat, and making sure that we are engaging our communities, and younger people, like the volunteers at High Tech High.” Now that heat mapping has concluded, Vonblum said “We can use the data to create high-resolution maps that show heat distribution throughout the City, and how that heat distribution changes throughout the day. What we know is some areas in the City can be up to 20 degrees hotter than others. “Where we see signs of the greatest heat differentials are urban development, and those with poorer populations, especially communities of color. Those are neighborhoods with high-heat vulnerability. Not only do they have a higher vulnerability to the heat, but they also have a lower capacity to adapt. The ramifications of failing to adapt to extreme heat can pose serious health risks.” “According to NOAA, extreme heat kills more Americans than any other weather event,” said Mike Hansen, the City’s planning director. “It’s important we hold events like these to not only help with our planning efforts and build community partnerships but to raise awareness with community members about the dangers of extreme heat in San Diego.”

M

ission Bay High School senior Sita Antel has won a national award for her volunteer work at Cabrillo National Monument honoring the centennial of the 19th Amendment granting women voting rights. Bestowed by the National Park Service, the George and Helen Hartzog Awards in various categories honor park volunteers’ hard work while drawing attention to their skills and contributions. Each year, nearly 300,000 volunteers across the NPS donate more than 6.5 million hours of service, for a value of more than $185 million. On Aug. 25, Antel was named the 2020 national award winner in the youth service category for creating an exhibit “picket garden.” She researched, prepared text, and created original artwork, as well as assisting with setting up the exhibition on women’s suffrage that was made available to the public both in-person and online. The 19th Amendment in-person exhibit reached thousands of visitors at the park while it was on display, and, since its publication, the online fully-accessible exhibit has reached more than 500,000 through the park website and social media series. “Thanks to Sita’s work on the exhibit, the park was able to highlight diverse under-told histories of women,” said Elizabeth Skinner,

Cabrillo’s chief of interpretation. “Additionally, the picket garden she created sparked relevant and engaging conversations between visitors and staff about voting rights in the United States.” The Hartzog Awards are given annually to recognize the exemplary contributions NPS volunteers make to their park and to their community. George B. Hartzog Jr. served as the director of the NPS and created the VolunteersIn-Parks program in 1970. In retirement, he and his wife, Helen, established a fund to support the program and honor the efforts of

volunteers. An avowed history lover, Antel was thrilled to participate in a historic exhibition at a historic local monument. “The Point Loma Lighthouse built in 1854 was in itself a landmark of women’s rights,” she said pointing out, “The assistant lighthouse keeper position

was often held by women, and was the fi rst equal pay for equal work job for women under the U.S. government.” Noting it was great to be able to showcase women’s history at a historical landmark, Antel enjoyed dressing up in period garb and doing historical interpretation for

guests. But being rewarded for her work wasn’t anticipated. “I wasn’t expecting to win an award at all,” Antel said. “I’m really surprised.” Though she never applied for or knew she was even nominated for an award, Antel is proud that she “ended up winning on a national level in the youth category.” The 19th Amendment exhibit at Cabrillo National Monument was also visually stunning. “They illuminated the lighthouse in gold and purple, the colors of the suffragette movement,” Antel noted. Antel added: “I wrote the signs that were along the walkway and made the picket signs that were in the lighthouse garden. I did research on national and diverse women, not just Susan B. Anthony. The most important thing is these women’s voices were being heard out there. That’s what they deserved.” “I plan to get a history degree,” said Antel adding, “I’ve always been a huge advocate for women’s rights.” Antel would also consider a career in parks. “I would be happy working in Point Loma or a smaller park, getting my hands dirty, doing a lot of things,” she said. “I really love museums, interpretation, and education. I want to do something in the community that I enjoy, and that makes a difference.”

Both 9-holes, Gator and Gopher courses were designed by co-operator Oliver Mahoney, a mini golf builder in the United Kingdom. Finishing touches continue to be added to each course. Each round of mini golf is $14 per person for those age 12 and

older and $12 per person for players 12 years and younger. The Gator Course opens at 11 a.m. and takes about 25 to 35 minutes to play. The course closes for the evening after the last group enters at 6:30 p.m. Check-in for mini golf and regular 9-hole play are both done inside The Loma Club. Adjacent to The Loma Club’s clubhouse and patio, Tappers Mini Golf is an additional golfing activity at The Loma Club. It elevates the traditional mini-golf experience, allowing players to complete the course with a cocktail in hand. Tappers however is not a re-branding of the historic and iconic Liberty Station golf course, live music venue, and social club. “We’re excited to finally have families, groups, and couples play this new outdoor entertainment offering at The Loma Club,” said Laura Johnson, a Point Loma resident and The Loma Club’s co-operator. “When Luke (Mahoney), John (Levan), Oliver (Mahoney), and I took over the operations

Mayor announces first COVID-19 testing, monoclonal antibody and post-exposure treatment site in San Diego

M

ayor Todd Gloria annou nc e d t he f i r s t Monoclonal Antibody Regional Center (MARC) in San Diego County to provide on-site COVID-19 testing, treatment for COVID-19 and post-exposure prophylaxis at no cost for anyone who is medically eligible, regardless of health insurance or immigration status. This announcement was made alongside County Board of Supervisors Chair Nathan Fletcher, County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten, Council President Jennifer Campbell and Councilmember Chris Cate. The site is located at the Cathy Hopper Clairemont Friendship

Center at 4425 Bannock Ave. and is anticipated to open next week to provide treatment to all medically eligible individuals regardless of their health insurance or immigration status. Onsite testing will be provided soon after. “This site is incredibly important for our city, county and region,” Gloria said. “While vaccinations are the main weapon in the fight against COVID-19, providing early antibody treatment alongside testing will ensure that those who do test positive receive immediate care. This site is crucial in the fight against COVID-19, relieving the burden on local hospitals and benefiting nearby

schools that rely on regular testing to remain open.” MARC sites provide early antibody treatment for COVID-19 patients that can help them fight the illness without having to go to the hospital. This life-saving treatment has been authorized for emergency use by the FDA to treat persons with mild to moderate symptoms of COVID-19. Post-exposure prophylaxis is a preventive treatment started after exposure to prevent illness. Please note that monoclonal antibodies are not a replacement for vaccination. “Monoclonal antibodies are a good reason to trust science.

Since February, more than 1,600 people have received monoclonal antibody treatment at seven treatment centers the County of San Diego has opened,” said Fletcher. “This new treatment center will save more lives from COVID-19 and is another example of how Mayor Gloria is committed to the City and County working together to take actions that meet the needs of our communities.” “The Monoclonal Antibody Regional Centers, or MARCs, are a new model of collaboration to provide COVID-19 treatment,” said Wooten. “While not a replacement for vaccination, this no-cost procedure can reduce the

risk of COVID-19-related hospital visits and help those sick with the virus feel better faster. Other MARC sites are available in Escondido, at Vista Community Clinic and through Family Health Centers of San Diego in Hillcrest and Chula Vista. For more information about MARC sites in the County, call 619-685-2500. “Prevention by vaccination is best way to protect our community from COVID-19,” said Campbell. “However, if you are infected with COVID-19, the monoclonal antibody treatment saves lives and reduces suffering. This new center will give our neighbors convenient access to this treatment.”

Ocean Beach Oktoberfest is back with music and family fun By DAVE SCHWAB | The Beacon

I

t's time to dust off your lederhosen, grab your friends and meet up for two days and nights of fun and festivities for the 20th annual Ocean Beach Oktoberfest. The event will take place Friday and Saturday, Oct. 8-9, where Newport Avenue meets the beach. Festivities will include both family friendly and adult activities. The family friendly vendors and activities are organized by the Ocean Beach Main Street Association in the grassy area and Saratoga Park. “OBMA is thrilled Oktoberfest is back in full swing,” said Kristen Keltner, OBMA event and program manager. “Each year, the Hoy Hoy Boys support the community including the Warrior Foundation Freedom Station, whose mission is to be the leading force in assisting, honoring and supporting the military men and women who have so bravely served and sacrificed for our country.” There will be something new at this year’s OB Oktoberfest. “Another cool thing we’re adding

this year, another component, is Saratoga Park as a family fun zone with The Rad Hatter and live music,” said Keltner. “Saratoga Park will feature OBMA’s Seaside Family Zone sponsored by Newbreak Church. vendors beginning at 10 a.m.” Added Keltner: “A huge thank you to Newbreak Church for sponsoring the Seaside Family Fun Zone. Unleash your creative side at The Rad Hatter booth in Saratoga Park. Create a fun upcycled hat that you can don throughout the festival and show your OB spirit.” In the 21-plus age beer garden located in the Ocean Beach Pier parking lot, guests can drink a classic

German brew or local beer, wine and spirits. There will be live music performed by local and nationally touring artists, contests, vendors, giveaways and more. Keltner talked about a new community booth. “One of this year’s community booths is the Ocean Beach Community Foundation, which will be creating awareness about the new Veteran’s Plaza design,” she said. “Stop by their booth at Veterans Plaza on Saturday and say hello.” The Wounded Warrior Project event will be held Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. For a $5 donation, participants will get a chance to shoot free throws against veterans and win prizes. There is a very special sponsorship match from one of OBMA’s event partners, so make this one count. The Oktoberfest Beer Garden will be open Friday from 4-11:30 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m.-11:30 p.m. Entrance is $10 and goes back to OB’s community partners who, with public support, are able to return more than $50,000 each year to the beach community.

Retired Point Loma dentist writes book about gardening SeaWorld’s new Halloween event offers haunted houses and scare zones By DAVE SCHWAB | The Beacon

I

f you thought retired dent i st-t u r ned-aut hor Jon Cunningham’s book is only about gardening you’d be missing the point. Titled “Around My Garden in 80 Years: My Adventure with Soil, Sun and Water,” octogenarian Cunningham’s handsomely illustrated book warns that it “may tickle your funny bone.” “The general theme throughout is not gardening per se, although the cover might disagree,” said Cunningham, a Point Loma resident who practiced dentistry for many years with both his father and his son. Cunningham said all three men have shared a passion for gardening and that together they’ve amassed more than 100 years combined experience in the craft. Cunningham pointed out three themes work and blend together in 80 Years. He characterized the work as “humor and new ideas to teach new and more experienced gardeners from my many years of playing in the dirt about gardening plus self-sustainability.” The author described his new work as “a practical guide to gardening,” which concerns itself with “thinking organically and sustainably about self-sufficiency.” Published by 4Paws Press, the easy-to-read book is divided into numerous brief chapters covering subjects like sustainability, seeds and seedlings, soil, hole digging, composting, crop rotation, irrigation and worms. Readers will also find concise illustrated chapters on their favorite veggies including corn, radishes, beets, beans, squash, stone fruits, guava, peppers, figs, and dragon fruit.

Jon Cunningham with his book and Sierra.

Cunningham freely admits the cover concept for his 125-page book is “his version” of the 1956 movie named “Around the World in 80 Days.” He added the point he wanted to get across in writing about lessons learned from a lifetime of gardening is that “health, climate, energy and what we grow are all interconnected.” Cunningham got the idea for writing a book offering his gardening knowledge in March of 2020 following the COVID stay-at-home order. That order, he noted, led to “everyone wanting to grow a garden.” He added he’d “never wanted to write a book” about gardening because he knew someone who’d had a bad experience years ago with a gardening book she’d authored but couldn’t get published. But he decided to give it a go now that self-publishing has made it easier to navigate the publishing process, and was glad he did.

Visit digdiego.com to see the book cover, sample chapters, weekly blog, and for more information.

“Our daughter edited it and then I sent it off to the publisher,” he said adding, “I thought I could whip this book out in about two months. But it took about a year and a half, and I just finished it and it’s now online with Amazon.” Lessons he has learned along the way are about more than just gardening, said Cunningham who wants to share that knowledge with others. “My book is also about things like solar,” he said offering an example. “After recently installing solar energy panels on our home and reaping the benefits in our reduced energy bills, I felt compared to share this,” he concluded.

The horrors of Howl-O-Scream, SeaWorld San Diego’s fi rst nighttime Halloween event, will run through Oct. 31 on select evenings. This separately ticketed event provides guests an experience unlike any other in San Diego, offering all the fear of a typical Halloween event, along with the thrilling rides and high-quality entertainment of a theme park. Guests will go through three haunted houses and six scare zones, and no one is safe with four eerie roaming hordes moving throughout the park. Amid the horrifying mayhem, guests can enjoy nighttime rides on three exhilarating coasters, marvel at twisted acrobatics and contortions during the Vampire Circus show, dance the night away at steampunk themed dance club and partake in spirited libations at three creatively creepy themed bars.

HORRIFYING HAUNTED HOUSES

Nightmare Experiment – A government medical experiment at a run-of-the-mill sleep clinic has gone horribly wrong, descending into utter chaos. The patients have given into their worst nightmares and have driven the staff to the brink of madness. Guests fight for their life and sanity as they rush to escape the clinic, dodging unruly patients along the way. Simon’s Slaughterhouse – The local meat processing plant has fallen into the hands of the demented Simon the Butcher and his crew. Guests navigate their way through bloody corridors, meat-hooked mortals and screeching buzz saws Read more online at sdnews.com to avoid the butcher’s blades.

Death Water Bayou – The stifl ing heat and dank humidity permeates the air and beckons visitors deeper into Death Water Bayou. Guests wander amid gravestones, voodoo dolls and the spirits of prior mortals who couldn’t escape the Bayou Witch’s house of cursed horrors.

CONCOCTIONS AND COCKTAILS Upon the exit of every haunted house, attendees enter an accompanying themed bar. AmBARlance – After escaping Nightmare Experiment, the AmBARlance is there to cure all guests’ ailments. The boozy “medications” are administered via IV bags and syringes as well as vodka soaked “vitamins” in medicine cups. For a more intense treatment, the Pop Rocks rimmed “ElectroShock” cocktail is sure to make their brain pop. Simon’s Screamatorium – Guests are on the menu at Simon the Butcher’s Screamatorium. Bartenders serve up the hottest drinks from within Simon’s human-sized smoker, including “The Bloodiest Mary” and “Vomit Shots.” Murder She Float – Pulled from the depths of the murky swamp, this abandoned Mardi Gras float was brought back to life and is glowing with the “spirits” of the Mardi Gras dead. Guests feast on grasshoppers and worms in a scoop of “mud” and wash it down with cursed concoctions, served up on Ouija boards, in fishbowls and in the skulls of those who have crossed the Bayou Witch. 11 Pointers earn first win before COVID cancels last week's game SPORTS

By SCOTT HOPKINS | The Beacon

F

ollowing a thrilling comefrom-behind win at Patrick Henry for their first victory of the season, Point Loma's Pointers lost the chance to establish a winning streak when an unidentified player tested positive for the COVID virus, forcing the cancellation of last week's game at Olympian High School. The Pointers will have another opportunity when they meet Valley View High School of Moreno Valley in a rare Saturday game tomorrow (Sept. 25). But a major construction portion of PLHS stadium improvements was inadvertently scheduled for Sept. 24-26 making the venue unavailable for what was to be the Pointers first true home game of the season. At press time, the game's time and the location were not known. Against Patrick Henry, the Pointers found themselves down 21-17 at halftime and 28-24 after three quarters before outscoring the Patriots 13-0 in the final period to seal a 37-28 win, the first for new head coach Joel Allen after racking up 100 victories during his tenure at Bishop's School in La Jolla. The game's significance was not lost on Allen. "That was us a couple of weeks ago," said a relieved Allen after the game referring to the Patriots who imploded with multiple penalties killing their final drive. "It builds

trust with the kids when we're telling them 'do these things and we'll be successful but when you come up on the losing side it's tough. This makes watching films tomorrow a lot easier." The Pointers took a 14-7 lead on a pair of Noah Turbeville touchdown runs in the first quarter sandwiched around a long-running play score by the Patriots. But by halftime, the hosts had scored twice more while the Pointers added a field goal by Aaron Lee. The second half began with promise as the Pointers recovered their own high and short kick at the Patriot 30. But on a fourth-down play just one yard from a go-ahead score, a Patriot defender picked off a Jackson Emerson pass and returned it 101 yards for a score that increased the Patrick Henry lead to 28-17. The Pointers could have folded following this apparent momentum-changing play. But the Patriots never scored again and the Pointers found new life to score twice in the final frame and claim the victory. On the second play following the ensuing kickoff, Emerson found an all-alone Kayden Nantkes for a 37-yard scoring pass to reduce the Patriot lead to 28-24. On their next possession, Nantkes caught a 30-yard pass en route to a touchdown by Chase Lowary. A blocked PAT left the Pointers back in the lead at 30-28 with 7:32 left to play. A bizarre botched Patriot play led

to the Pointer win. From his own 15 yard line, the Patrick Henry QB took the snap in shotgun formation but turned and tossed the ball back to another player who attempted a punt. When the player dropped the ball to punt, he missed it with his foot and the Pointers covered the ball at the Patriot 10. From here, Lowary again scored for the final 37-28 score with 3:22 left to play.

Pointer players celebrated their first win by dumping a water container on a grinning Allen. For the game, Emerson completed nine of 14 passes for 195 yards. His completions went to Nantkes (3 catches for 72 yards), Drake Cobb (2 for 25 yards), Aaron Lee (2 for 34 yards), and Lowary (2 for 64 yards). On the ground, Lowary gained 83 yards on 15 carries while Turbeville added 79 yards on 14 carries, each

averaging over five yards per carry and scoring two touchdowns as the Pointers totaled 393 yards in offense. Defensively, Lowary totaled 24 tackles and assists, Gianni Calhoun had 10, Mauro Garcia and Max Umberg had five each and Anthony Young and Rocket Robinson each had four. Umberg also had a sack and Cameron Lucas had an interception. Fabian Moya and Charles Romero each recovered a Patriot fumble. Following the game tomorrow, the Pointers next travel to Scripps Ranch on Oct. 1 for their first league game of the season. The Falcons, who boast a 4-0 record, are now the top-rated team in CIF Div. II while the Pointers have dropped to 16th (last) in computer rankings with the forfeit. The kickoff is at 7 p.m.

EXTRA POINTS

The Pointers had scheduled a bye week on Oct. 22 but Allen is attempting to find an opponent, allowing his team to play a full 10-game slate. The added game, on that date, would be in the middle of the team's four Eastern League contests. Football boosters are putting over 100 game-worn Pointer football jerseys up for sale at $25 each. A full description, including color, jersey number, and size can be found at https://squareup.com/store/plhspa-football. Proceeds will be used to purchase new junior varsity uniforms.
