Northern Div’s Zimmerman promoted to assistant chief BY ANTHONY GENTILE | VILLAGE NEWS

San Diego Police Department Northern Division Captain Shelley Zimmerman is being relocated within the department as the result of a promotion to assistant chief. Zimmerman has been in charge of neighborhood policing in San Diego since Sept. 8. “It’s been an absolute honor and a privilege to be the captain of Northern Division, not only working very closely with our extremely hardworking officers but also with all the great community members out in the area to work together to solve numerous issues with the community,”

Zimmerman said. Zimmerman served as Northern Division captain for 19 months. During her tenure, she was very visible in the local community, attending meetings and making herself available to the community. “I am very hands-on and enjoy working with everyone,” Zimmerman said. “That’s just my style – I’m a very outgoing and hands-on person.” Zimmerman said she hopes local residents continue to play an active role in Northern Division communities. Twenty of the best female golfers in the world will hit the links at Torrey Pines next week for the Samsung World Championship. The 29th annual event will be held at the South Course Sept. 16 to 20. “Samsung is a wonderful event for us,” defending champion Paula Creamer said. “We view it as one of the top tournaments and one of our best tournaments that we play in.” The Samsung World Championship is a 72-hole stroke play tournament with no cuts and a purse of $1 million. It is the first LPGA Tour event in San Diego since 1993 and the first at Torrey Pines since the Inamori Classic in 1983. The field for the Samsung World Championship features 20 elite female golfers, including Creamer, three-time LPGA Player of the Year Lorena Ochoa, winners of each of this year’s major tournaments, the leading money winner from both the LGPA and Ladies European tours and the top money holders on this year’s tour. Creamer said the competition is what makes the tournament exciting. “You can’t get any better than that – that’s what you want to go against, that’s what you want to

Several local scholastic football teams kicked off the 2009 season last weekend with victories. La Jolla Country Day (LJCD) School rolled to a 49-7 win over Calvin Christian High. Linebacker Mical Bailey got the game going LJCD’s way during Calvin’s first offensive possession when he intercepted a pass and returned it 29 yards to the 2-yard line. Two plays later, quarterback Derek Hatfield sneaked the ball across the goal line to put the Torreys up 6-0. The rout was on and LJCD would lead 28-0 at the half and 42-0 after three quarters. Offensively, LJCD was led by Hatfield and running back Montell Allen. Hatfield hit on 8-of-14 passes for 142 yards and four

touchdowns. Hatfield’s four TDs went to Connor Gerhart, Ruben Pena, Alberto Yanez and Bailey. Hatfield added 67 yards rushing and one TD on 11 carries. Anthony Torres led all receivers with three catches for 64 yards. Allen led all rushers with 91 yards. and one TD on seven carries. Gerhart added 32 yards on five carries and Mac Kaland rushed for 40 yards and a TD also on five carries. The Torrey defense was led by Bailey who, in addition to his interception, led all tacklers with seven stops (five solos). Gerhart and Kaland each made five tackles, while Torres and Joel Juarez each snagged interceptions. Hunter Khaleghi was perfect in the kicking game, hitting on all

seven PAT’s. In the junior varsity contest, LJCD rolled to a 40-14 victory. LJCD will host The Meadows School (Nevada) on Friday evening at 7 p.m. Elsewhere, The Bishop’s School rolled to a 56-0 win over Tijuana Instituto Mexico and University City High dropped a 32-0 decision to El Capitan. Finally, La Jolla High was awarded a forfeit victory over Clairemont High. The scheduled Sept. 4 game was canceled as Clairemont coach Rian Floco reported that approximately a dozen Chieftains players broke school rules. The athletes had to sit out a game, which depleted Clairemont’s roster for its slated contest at La Jolla. ■

The city’s Park and Recreation Dept. celebrates the completion of Kellogg Park Playground at La Jolla Shores with a ribbon-cutting ceremony today, Sept. 10, at 5 p.m. Friends of La Jolla Shores organized to procure new, safer equipment for the park after the city removed unsafe play structures. Prior to the ribbon-cutting, there will be face painting, food and cake cutting, live music by the Hullabaloo Band, T-shirts and a life-size replica of JJ, the orphaned baby gray whale.

“We can’t do everything by ourselves, so it’s important to bring as many stakeholders together to discuss these issues and work together to discuss the needs of the community,” Zimmerman said. Captain Chris Ball, a 20-year veteran of the police force, is replacing Zimmerman. Ball lives in Clairemont and has children who attend Pacific Beach schools. ■

Jean Klein Frank, 83; poet, philanthropist, Holocaust survivor

Lifeguards labor on holiday weekend

A memorial service for Jean Klein Frank, a poet and philanthropist well known in La Jolla, is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13. The tribute will take place at the La Jolla Riford Branch Library, 7555 Draper Ave., where Frank had hosted monthly poetry readings for the past five years. The service is timed to coincide with the weekend closest to Frank’s birthday, Sept. 11. She died June 5 of congestive heart failure at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla. She was 83. Despite witnessing and enduring unspeakable suffering in Nazi Germany’s death camps during World War II, Frank, a Polish Jew, celebrated beauty in nature and the arts. She also looked for goodness in others. Frank walked daily to La Jolla’s Wind N Sea beach to meditate, enjoy the view and meet people. She called her favorite wooden bench there her “office.” Her monthly poetry readings, which began at the La Jolla Recreation Center in the 1970s, provided a forum for poets to share their work. Musicians, painters, journalists, singers and other performers participated in these gatherings, dubbed “Poetry Unlimited Art & Music.” Besides nurturing artists and counseling friends, Frank showed her compassion by helping the indigent. She collected second-hand clothing and day-old bread, pastries and bagels to give to people in need. She often distributed any leftover food at the poetry readings.

A memorial service for Jean Klein Frank, seen here celebrating her birthday in 2007, will be held Sept. 13.

During the past several years, the San Diego Historical Society recorded Frank’s epic life story, which is also depicted in her memoir “Not Now, Not Ever.” Frank composed verse in several languages, including Polish and Italian. Images of ashes and fire, cemeteries and flowers highlight the recurring themes of destruction and renewal in her poems. When asked, Frank spoke to schoolchildren about the Holocaust and its lessons of tolerance versus intolerance. She was born in Kalisz, Poland. With the exception of one sister, Guta, Frank lost her entire family to Germany’s genocide of Jews. Although she recognized her place in history, Frank did not want to be identified solely as a Holocaust survivor. Instead, she preferred to be known for her literary pursuits and charitable work. After the war, Frank rebuilt her life in Italy and Pittsburgh, Pa. She and her second husband, the late Nathan Frank, moved to La Jolla in 1974. She is also preceded in death by her sister Guta and eldest son Michael Klein. She is survived by her son Larry Klein of La Jolla. ■

Bicyclist injured by SUV Town Council revives A 30-year-old woman driving sunset happy hour an SUV hit a 55-year-old bicy-

Lifeguards reported that 1.1 million people visited San Diego beaches over Labor Day weekend, Saturday through Monday — more than double the 528,000 that visited the beaches in 2008. Lifeguards made 521 water rescues, according to lifeguard Lt. Andy Lerum. At the beaches in the Northern Division, police issued 109 alcohol citations, sent 13 people to detox and issued 53 general misdemeanor citations. The floating booze party, dubbed flotilla, returned to Sail Bay on Mission Bay, wherein Lerum estimated 3,500 people connected their inter-tubes and drank on the water. Beachgoers are permitted to drink while floating on the water but are banned from drinking on the sand. Lerum reported that lifeguards made 20 rescues at the floating party and several people were sent to the hospital for intoxication. Twenty lifeguards were sent to survey the area when only one lifeguard is usually stationed at Sail Bay. Lerum also reported that the 5,000 people in the area also damaged the endangered eelgrass and littered the bottom of the bay with alcohol bottles and cans. Police issued 30 citations and made at least four arrests at the flotilla, according to Lerum.

City to create unit on medical pot law City Council Tuesday voted to create a task force to study regulations on medical marijuana dispensaries in order to address concerns on public safety. The council has set Dec. 31 as the deadline for the 11-member group—which will include affected residents, physicians and attorneys—to deliver its proposals. Council will appoint the task force members. The city has no guidelines on the location of such cooperatives. Neither does it require police department approval of their opening. Ten cities in San Diego County have banned or put moratoriums on pot shops. San Diego isn’t on the list. In July, the city suspended approvals for dispensaries. In 1996, California voters approved a proposition to legalize marijuana for seriously ill patients. The law states that nonprofit medical pot dispensaries are legal if they verify the patients’ medical necessity.

La Jolla Town Council invites community members to meet and mingle next Thursday, Sept. 17, during a SunSetter Happy Hour. The event will run from 5 to 7 p.m. at Burgundy Grill & Wine Bar, 830 Kline St. Attendees will enjoy complimentary hors d’oeuvres and drink specials, a business promo table and free raffle. Admission is $5 for council members, $10 for non-members and free for new members who sign up and pay membership at the event. For information call John Weinstein, (858) 456-4995.

Last year, 1,000 people paddled around the OB Pier. Hickman said he expects about 1,500 paddlers this year. All types of paddlecraft are welcome to join. NEWS ‘No Joke Bandit’ pleads guilty to all counts BY NEAL PUTNAM | VILLAGE NEWS

The robber dubbed the “This Ain’t No Joke Bandit” abandoned all levity and pleaded guilty Sept. 3 to 18 counts of robbery and attempted robbery that included hold-ups at a yogurt shop and TGI Friday’s restaurant in La Jolla. Without a plea agreement with prosecutors, Jamel Tishan Powers, 24, of El Cajon, faces 20 years and eight months in prison, according to what San Diego Superior Court Judge Jeff Fraser told him would be the maximum sentence. Fraser also said he would consider a lesser sentence that would range from 13 to 18 years.

Sentencing was set for Oct. 16. Powers remains in the South Bay Detention Facility on $350,000 bail. Powers earned the nickname because he repeatedly said these words: “This ain’t no joke. I’m serious — this is a robbery.” The loss to businesses in the spree is well in the thousands of dollars, but Deputy District Attorney Makenzie Harvey said she had not figured the exact loss from all victims. The series started March 29 with a hold-up at a McDonald’s restaurant, and then Powers picked yogurt and ice cream shops. On April 5, Powers robbed two employees at the TF Yogurt

shop at 8800 Villa La Jolla Drive. Powers had robbed three other people at other yogurt shops elsewhere that day, according to court records. Powers also attempted to rob the TGI Fridays in La Jolla on April 28, but got away without any money. He expanded his robbery menu to include hamburger joints, a cafe, pizza places, a Marie Callender’s restaurant and a sushi shop. Powers left his fingerprints on a counter at an ice cream store, and he was arrested May 12 by San Diego police. Powers never displayed a weapon, but victims testified at a July 23 preliminary hearing they feared he had a gun. ■

Harriers will take strides to victory BY DAVE THOMAS | VILLAGE NEWS

Team and individual goals will look to be met this fall as a number of area scholastic cross country teams going running in search of victory. At La Jolla Country Day (LJCD) School, head coach Scott Sanders and the Torreys are coming off of much success on the boys side last fall. LJCD was Coastal South League, Coastal Conference and CIF Division IV champions. That makes three years in a row for the league and CIF titles. At the state meet, LJCD had the best team time in school history and a 15th-place finish, despite its top runner not finishing and its number two runner having an off day. The Torreys lost four-time state qualifier and team MVP Alex Poyhonen to graduation, along with Eric Blodgett (number five on the team). Despite what the finishing order from last year’s CIF and state meets might indicate, LJCD’s top runner is senior Dennis Roth. According to Sanders, Roth is “the undisputed leader of the team, and after a solid track season and summer of training, is poised to have a great fall.” Roth will be supported and followed closely by last year’s CIF runner-up, junior Lee Klitzner, who also ran 16:48 at state in 2008. Senior Alex Fleischhacker, like Roth, is going after a fourth team CIF championship and has the ability to finish in the top 10. Sophomores Noah Wolfenzon

and Jake Mack should show significant improvement this fall and round out LJCD’s scoring five, according to Sanders. Sanders added that those runners should feel some pressure for those spots from juniors Phillip Poyhonen and Chase Mertz, and newcomer Oliver Hamilton. Sophomore Trevor Alexander is also looking good early on, and freshmen Josh Pooley and Jeff Clancy may emerge as they gain experience, according to Sanders. On the girls side, LJCD finished fourth a season ago in the Coastal League and fifth in both the conference and at CIFs. “We are still young, but I think we’ll be more competitive this year,” Sanders commented. “Sophomore Samantha Staszak is showing good early season form and is also assuming the leadership mantle for the squad. She should challenge for a top 10 spot at CIFs this year, and if the team improves enough to grab one of the three state-qualifying spots, Sam will be central to this.” Other returning sophomores Emily Domanico and Maggie Taylor are clearly stronger than last year, and they will also be joined by two newcomers, sophomore Alina Wong and freshman Lily Wolfenzon, according to Sanders. “Wolfenzon comes in with a soccer background and is our clear number two runner,” Sanders added. LJCD lost four-year varsity runner Sasha Binderow, as well as last year’s number two runner, Kaitlin

McCallum, due to injury. “The girls, being so young, are still building toward future success, but the future may well arrive in November rather than 2010 if all goes well,” Sanders added. “We’d like to improve on last year’s efforts, and we might have an outside shot at that third qualifying spot at CIFs.” At The Bishop’s School, head coach Adam Weiner and the Knights are hoping to top last year’s results. The Lady Knights won the Coastal Conference and placed second in the CIF Division IV meet to qualify for state. Meantime, the boys finished third in the conference and fourth at CIFs. Although the girls team lost four varsity seniors to graduation, the Lady Knights still have a strong team led by juniors Lauren Collins and Serena Glynn, and sophomore Leyna Rowan. The boys team was very young last year, but looks to be developing into another powerful team. Bishop’s top two runners include sophomores Will Botta and “Hoagie” Hoagland, both having qualified for the state meet last year as individuals. Junior Chris Kuntz should be right up there close to them, according to Weiner. “If all goes well, the girls team has a very good shot at winning the conference again and qualifying for the state meet as a team,” Weiner remarked. “The boys will be facing some heavy competition from La Jolla Country Day and Christian High School, but they have the best chance for a top two CIF finish in

several years.” At neighboring La Jolla High School, the girls are once again under the direction of head coach Roger Karnopp. The Lady Vikings finished tied for first in the Western League a season ago, third in CIFs and were 17th at state. La Jolla lost four seniors to graduation: Nihal Kahyali, Courtney Avvampato, Tess Plant-Thomas and Meagan Bautista. Five of the returnees that participated on the varsity at various times are seniors Tatevik Simavoryan and Jeanine Mejares; and juniors Illana Fricks, Zoe Wescoe and Catherine Russell. According to Karnopp, the next two slots at the current time will be filled by freshmen Megan Carroll and Mele Johnson. “The early season polls have placed us at about eighth in CIFs,” Karnopp commented. “We will be working hard to see if we can do better than that.” On the boys side, new head coach Robert McCarthy said he is very excited about the prospects for the Vikings this fall. Three runners who could compete on any team, according to McCarthy, are senior Michael Conroy, and juniors Alex Eve and Andrew Farkas, all-league finalists in track. Freshman Daniel Farkas is also looking strong, according to McCarthy. “Expectations are high for five returners from last year’s successful program,” McCarthy said. “There is, in addition, an encouraging freshmen class.” ■

A concrete weir (“lip’’) needs to be constructed in the resulting void at an elevation which would capture and maintain sand in back of the weir. Tide and wave action should build up a sandy beach along the bluffs sloping towards the breakwater. This beach would allow kids to wade in shallow water and be protected from ocean waves. All of the concrete overlying the sluice gates should also be removed. The resulting gap in the breakwater could be bridged with a walkway. Or the breakwater could be declared off limits and access denied. I know nothing about any earlier drownings of children, but I very definitely recall the two adults who were swept off the wall by high waves during a storm. My recollection is that it occurred on New Year’s Eve, possibly 15 or 20 years ago. Apparently, a young couple had gone out on the seawall to see the high surf, and were unable to scramble to safety when a huge wave struck and caused their deaths. There was a great deal of news coverage of the incident at the time.

ocean, completely different things. She said Ellen Scripps’ foreman managed the project; no it was managed by one of the most famous hydraulic engineers in the world, Hiram Savage. She then states there were two vents in the wall, no, there are four sluiceways in the wall. She goes on to say that two children were sucked through the openings by the backwash and drowned, wow! Now that is a good story, no, the facts are the sluiceways were closed before the pool ever opened to the public due to the loss of too much sand. Today we have the opposite effect; we have a hill of sand and not enough water. The ocean used to come up much closer to the walk down stairs. At the end of this letter she says the decision to remove the seals is selfish, ill-advised, made by politically motivated individuals. The reality is that this was a gift to the state of California, a manmade pool with the purpose to be for swimming, children and diving and fishing. Diving as we know it in California began at the Children’s Pool. What is selfish and illadvised is to place a colony of seals (mostly dumped from SeaWorld) in a manmade pool next to one of the most used swimming beaches in San Diego, as the lifeguards say, “If you don’t want to be eaten by a shark don’t swim by seals.” To have hateful people yell at innocent people through megaphones to get off the beach, it is our continual right to go on the beach, and to have clean water and to have people collect thousands of dollars daily to aid their own agenda at the cost of our community. Two- to 3,000 people come a day there is no parking lot for this venue, therfore people who come to go to beaches or parks have no place to park. I have followed the visitors for eight years and they do very little for the economy of La Jolla. That is selfish, ill-advised, politically motivated individuals.

on, I never really thought that the opposition would be favored and the seals left to float homeless in the waters. After I arrived at work this morning, an overwhelming sadness overcame me when I thought about what was going on at the beach right at this moment. I still have tears in my eyes as I write this. Who gave us the right to decide where nature, where other living creatures, that share this planet with us, can and cannot live? How selfish and arrogant have we become? Humanity has consumed the entire coast and inward land…does one single insignificant, bacteria infested, little piece of sand really make that much more of a difference? You claim your fight is so that your children may have the opportunity to play in these waters. Is that really what motivates your sickening campaign? Have we asked the children what they want? Do you even really care what your children want? So many homes and communities nowadays have swimming pools, not to mention that there is this rather large length of coast with an abundance of beaches readily available and each more beautiful than the last. We even have beaches for our dogs! I cannot begin to conjure the words Melinda Merryweather that my conscience, soul and La Jolla heart want to tell you. same plan for ending the War in Iraq. This ingenious plan can be used large scale…global. Why didn’t we think of this many years ago? Al Qaeda and the rest of the terrorists would have surrendered and laid down their arms if we just would have played some Celine Dion and Barney and Friends tunes for them, over exceptionally large speakers. You, my fellow citizens who support this, are truly despicable people. Neighbors of the seals must really be thrilled by the melody of the barking dogs from dawn until dusk. As a homeowner, I’m sure this is something that you would love to simultaneously occur as you are showing your home to potential buyers. “Don’t mind the barking, we are just trying to scare off innocent wildlife.” Tourists have finally received confirmation that we Californians are truly out in left field. Who needs the seals anyways? You can always go to SeaWorld if you want to look at them, right? If only that could be said for human beings…who needs children? Go to an orphanage if you want to see them! It does not sound as appealing anymore. That is ultimately what will happen to the seals, they will not have a home. They could be potentially separated from their families. They could die. Please, my fellow citizens, do not let this deter your mission to run them out. Do not let this hinder your mission to play ridiculously loud sounds of barking dogs in a beautiful community. Do not let this keep you up at night, while you sleep in your luxurious home with a swimming pool, overlooking the ocean. Just know that as you kiss your children goodnight and lay your head down to rest that there are seals aimlessly floating in the water wishing for the same comfort…a home. Tina M. Valle San Diego

GRAB A PLATE Restaurant Week features fine food for folks on fixed funds BY LORALEE OLEJNIK | VILLAGE NEWS

Despite the economy, local restaurants fare quite well during San Diego Restaurant Week. San Diego’s culinary showcase returns for its fifth installment Sunday, Sept. 13 to Friday, Sept. 18. More than 180 participating restaurants, a record for the event, across the county will offer $20, $30 and $40 three-course, prix-fix menus, allowing diners to enjoy fine food on fixed funds. “Everyone realizes it’s tough eco-

nomic times. You have to offer even more value,” said Lehn Goetz, owner of Café Coyote and president of the San Diego chapter of the California Restaurant Association. Goetz said that San Diego has come to have one of the top restaurant week promotions in the nation, attracting an estimated 200,000 diners over the six-day event. Goetz said he believes that San Diego restaurants have not been hit as hard by the recession as other markets such as Las Vegas, but added that events that promote

eating out are still greatly beneficial. This year, Restaurant Week has been held as a biannual event, with another having been held in January. The face of this year’s restaurant week is San Diego’s Sam the Cooking Guy, Sam Zien. “I’m all about people cooking for themselves,” said Zien, who was asked to serve as the spokesman for Restaurant Week and hosts the cooking show of the same name. “But I’m also the first to say there’s SEE PLATE, Page 9

stuff you don’t want to make or can’t take the time to make but you still want to try. (Restaurant Week) is giving you a reason to do it.” Zien has also shot a series of vignettes for the show’s website on how to eat like a pro and to be more adventurous in your food and an etiquette short on being kind to your server. Participants in this year’s Restaurant Week include casual eateries such as Point Loma’s Corvette diner and Nick’s at the Pier in Ocean Beach and more formal establishments such as La Jolla’s Marine Room and Nine-Ten restaurant, as well as beach-area favorites such as JRDN restaurant and the Fishery. “While the pricier restaurants sell out very fast because there’s an impression of greater value, I think you should go eat out where you want to,” Zien said. San Diego Restaurant Week is sponsored by the California Restaurant Association’s San Diego chapter, an organization of about 1,500 local restaurants that meet to promote the business, share information on practices and raise money for charity. Event organizers have also launched a new website that allows visitors to select a restaurant according to price, location or variety. The site also gives complete menu listings and brief restaurant profiles, and when you sign up for the newsletter, you are entered in a contest to win dinner out every weekend for a year. No special tickets or passes are required for Restaurant Week, although reservations are recommended and can be made by calling the restaurants directly or by visiting www.sandiegorestaurant week.com. ■

themes relate to water issues in the San Diego area. “No B.S.” — an abbreviation for no border sewage — is a coalition designed to clean up waters around the U.S.-Mexico border, including the Tijuana River alley and South County beaches. Surfider is teaming up with local community groups to solve these pollution problems created by untreated sewage and runoff from Mexican factories. “Know Your H20” deals with water-supply issues. The festival begins with a light breakfast at 9 a.m., followed promptly at 10 a.m. by the paddle. It continues until 5 p.m. with activities and attractions, including awareness booths, free massages, surf lessons and surfboard demonstrations, artists, a beach cleanup, a beer garden and a raffle from Holeman Surf Designs. Local vendors Roots Kind Food and Peace Pies will serve a lunch of different types of raw, vegetarian and vegan food. Five bands will play at the festival, headlined by Iration, a reggae band from Hawaii. For more information on Paddle for Clean Water, visit paddle4cleanwater.blogspot.com. to the moon America won the race to the moon when Apollo 11 astronauts set foot on the moon’s surface on July 20, 1969. Just this past weekend, under a full moon, eight Apollo astronauts and NASA flight director Glynn Lunney converged on San Diego to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the feat. The two-day event began Friday with a “Meet the Legends” evening chaired by Sally Thornton at the San Diego Air & Space Museum. Guests met and spoke with the astronauts during an intimate cocktail reception, and radio talk-show host Mark Larson moderated a forum in which the space legends described their experiences and revealed that astronauts also have a great sense of humor.

Not long after dark, the emcee pointed out the International Space Station — fully operational and occupied, with the space shuttle attached — passing high overhead, easily visible as a bright spot of light arcing toward the full moon. Guests were impressed with the impeccable timing.

After a delicious dinner of fish and filet, NASA administrator Charles Bolden Jr. spoke of his organization’s aims and goals. YachtFest sets a course for Shelter Island Marina BY NICOLE SOURS LARSON | VILLAGE NEWS

For those who have ever fantasized about life aboard a superyacht or megayacht, are considering purchasing or chartering a large yacht, seeking work aboard as crew or just looking for services or accessories for a boat of any size, the 10th annual YachtFest event will soon be setting sail at the Shelter Island Marina. The show runs from Thursday, Sept.17 through Saturday, Sept. 19 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on Sunday, Sept. 20 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the marina next to the Island Palms Hotel at 2051 Shelter Island Drive.

Despite the economic downturn, the maritime event is expected to be larger than ever, with at least 35 yachts ranging from an Elling 48-foot yacht to the 122-foot Shogun. All yachts on exhibit will be open for touring by ticketholders. Enthusiasts can step aboard each yacht and imagine how they would use and redecorate or remodel their own yachting toys. Exhibiting on adjacent docks will be vendors who can help plan and fulfill remodels, including interior designers, experienced boatyards and related services. SEE YACHTFEST, Page B·4

County Attorney cites ’08 accomplishments A 94 percent felony conviction rate — one of the highest in California — and an honor as one of San Diego’s best places to work were cited among last year’s accomplishments at the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office, according to a recent report from the office. During 2008, the group worked with the federal Drug Enforcement Administration, resulting in the arrests of 75 San Diego State University students for selling various controlled substances. It also took part in two undercover narcotics operations that resulted in drug charges against 82 defendants. The office also recovered a

record $1.5 million in bad check funds, broke up a real estate fraud scheme that victimized hundreds of county homeowners and assisted in an investigation that resulted in a $1.4 million judgment against retail giant Walmart. Its child abduction unit helped recover 93 children worldwide. The office co-sponsored a summit to combat county gang violence and released statistics centering on the county’s 1,200 homicides unsolved over a 10year period. Chargers strike gold, top 49ers 26-7 BY DAVE THOMAS | VILLAGE NEWS

As more than 59,000 fans in attendance watched, the San Diego Chargers treated their faithful to an exhibition victory Friday evening and offered hope once again for a long run in the playoffs. With the hype high for the Bolts coming out of pre-season the last few campaigns, the question will be will they get off to a good start this time around? Starting strong was this night’s story, as the Chargers rolled past San Francisco 26-7, handing the 49ers their only pre-season loss. San Diego (2-2) set the tone

early, recovering an onside kick (Antoine Cason) to start the game. The Chargers converted on the first drive as Billy Volek hit Kassim Osgood on a 39-yard TD pass to make it 7-0. Nate Kaeding provided much of the scoring for the Chargers, converting on four field goals (36, 47, 51, 28 yards) on the evening, while third-string QB Charlie Whitehurst, who has struggled much of the pre-season, hit Kory Sperry on a 15-yard TD strike for the game’s final points. One scary moment early in the game for the Chargers was when free agent linebacker Kevin Bur-

nett (signed in the off-season from Dallas) went down following a collision with running back Glen Coffee. Burnett stayed down for several minutes before leaving with a stinger. San Francisco, meantime, looked sluggish at times moving the ball, getting its only points when QB Nate Davis hit Jason Hill on a 21-yard TD pass less than a minute before halftime. San Diego had 22 first downs to San Francisco’s 10, while tallying 346 total yards of total offense. San Diego opens the regular season a week from Monday when it travels to Oakland. ■

Broadcasting from out in the submarine canyon BY JUDITH LEA GARFIELD

I have evidence that the early bird does indeed catch the worm. On an early morning dive in the La Jolla Submarine Canyon, I was finning over the canyon’s upper rim, and in the near distance, I noticed a white haze hanging suspended in the water column. I swam closer to reach the mass of parchment tube worms (Chaetopterus sp.), which cement their tubes in the sediment. As I stared, the tubes periodically shot A suspension of sperm and eggs become fertilized in the water column while out geysers of white stuff. tube worms spawning. The reproductive strategy, called broadcast spawning, is found here and there throughout the animal kingdom. Corals (cnideria) and abalone (mollusca) are also examples. Spawning for Chaetoptera begins when worms eject either eggs or sperm, which meet up and become fertilized in the water column. When a worm ejects male or female gametes, neighboring worms are triggered to follow suit. The strategy’s success is attributed to the close-knit community tube worms subscribe. The clusters of tubes can measure tens to hun-

dreds of feet across. Group living is a relative concept for Chaetoptera because each lives singly in a rigid, U-shaped tube composed of parchment-like material mixed with sand grains. Since the body is too fragile to survive outside the tube, the critter is invisible to divers. Worms that might be curious about the outside world can’t leave anyway since the body is anchored to the tube’s interior, and the two potential exits are too narrow for the animal to squeeze through. Growth, then, would seem to pose a predicament to an animal SEE CANYON, Page B·3

‘I Love You, Man’ and ‘Soloist’ debut on DVD BY JAMES COLT HARRISON | VILLAGE NEWS

There is no end to the variety of films now available on DVD. Here are a few interesting selections. “I Love You, Man” turned out to be one of the year’s biggest comedy hits. Director John Hamberg wrote the script with Larry Levin and created a hilarious buddy movie that took the country by storm during its original release. Actor Paul Rudd emerges as a genuine comedy star after having starred in “Knocked Up” with Katherine Heigel last year. He has one of those cute-as-a-button faces that automatically makes you laugh. Women adore him and men want to be his pal because he is so pleasant. Rudd has just asked his girl to marry him and gives her an engagement ring. He has a dilemma because he doesn’t have a male friend close enough to be his best man. He meets Jason Segal (“Forgetting Sarah Marshall”), who plays the ultimate dude and becomes Rudd’s new best friend. Their “bromance” sets male bonding back 100 years and takes it to new hilarious heights of ridiculousness. The boys comically explore what it truly means to be a friend and take it on a few knee-slapping detours. Joining the cast for huge guffaws are pretty Jaime Pressley and Jane Curtin, the lovely Rashida Jones, comic Andy Samberg, character star J.D. Simmons and Jon

Favreau. The extras include a “making of” documentary, interviews with the director and Rudd, deleted scenes and some extended scenes cut from the movie. DreamWorks Pictures/ Paramount Home Entertainment. “The Soloist” made a decent splash in theaters when first shown. Now it’s on DVD for your pleasure. Starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jamie Foxx, the two men are from opposite societies within the same city. Downey plays an L.A. journalist looking for a good human interest story for the newspaper. By chance, he meets a street musician who has a passion for music. SEE DVDs, Page B·4

The chaetae are employed to make slices on the tube to stretch it out. At the same time, material is secreted to fill in the cracks. Voila, the tube is made wider, and its integrity is maintained. Eating is a sticky affair for these worms. Let’s just say they aren’t called mucus-bag feeders for no reason. As they fan water through their tube with three pistonlike segments, two wing-like legs simultaneously hold the mucus bag across the current to filter the water. Once the bag is clogged (around five minutes) with tiny algal and mud particles, they eat the bag, then secrete a new one. The mucus traps minuscule organisms, which the worm eats wrapped in its own

A superyacht is loosely defined as being more than 80 feet in length and a megayacht as extending over 200 feet. Yet the terms are often confused and used interchangeably, according to yacht designer and YachtFest board chair Doug Sharp. This year’s show will feature at least six yachts measuring over 100 feet and at least nine over 90 feet — the most ever, said Chuck Nichols, one of the founders of YachtFest. The yachts are all for sale or charter or are offered for fractional ownership. While most YachtFest vessels are over 70 feet, smaller boats that will be put on exhibit — like the Elling and a 50-foot Azimuth — must meet specific standards to participate. A vessel under 50 feet “needs to be new and interesting technology and a high-value vessel,” Nichols said. A “boutique” boat show designed to showcase San Diego as a yachting destination with the full range of specialized facilities and services required by yachts up to 400 feet, YachtFest draws about 3,000 to 4,000 guests each year. For a port that a few years ago barely registered on the radar screen of large-yacht owners seeking new and interesting ports of call, San Diego has come a long way. Recently, CNN proclaimed San Diego the “new superyacht capital,” a fact that excites YachtFest organizers, who started the show ten years ago to draw attention to San Diego as a destination for yachts traveling the West Coast. Previously, large-yacht owners tended to bypass San Diego on their passage between Mexico and the Pacific Northwest, said Diane Fraser, a charter broker and president of the San Diego office of Fraser Yachts Worldwide. Fraser is also a founding partner in Yacht-

Based on a true story, the two oddly paired men form a strong friendship when music unites them. Oscar winner Foxx plays the slightly mentally challenged musician who is as free as a bird and isn’t sure what Downey’s character wants from him. But Downey shows him the love and care that he has in his heart, despite the fact

Fest. Few super-/megayacht owners and captains realized that San Diego possesses the marine infrastructure, including boatyards and marina berths, to service superyachts. Far more large yachts are stationed on the East Coast of the U.S., where they can also explore the Caribbean and Bahamas. “The West Coast has always been a secret, not known as a destination where yachts could come for yard work and other maintenance services,” Fraser said. “We’ve opened it up for charter now. In the last year or so we’re seeing larger yachts coming here.” Yachting is also a significant business for San Diego, with huge potential for growth. Kate Pearson, vice president/business development for Knight & Carver Yacht Center and a founder of the San Diego Superyacht Association, said about 1,300 jobs directly support this industry. About 150 marina slips and eight Mediterranean mooring berths at the Embarcadero serve superyachts in San Diego. Shelter Island Marina, Pearson said, has seen a 235 percent growth in large-yacht business since 2000. Each visit of a large yacht translates into an expenditure of about

$1,000 per day for food, entertainment, hotel, car rentals and incidental repairs. Yet YachtFest is not just for dreamers who want to discover what the yachting lifestyle is all about, Fraser said. It’s also a show where deals are made. Fraser reports that her firm, which specializes in yachts over 80 feet, has always made a sale at YachtFest. Charter managers come seeking new yachts to represent and book. Placement firms also connect captains and crew with new onboard positions. YachtFest represents the intersection of business and pleasure in the yachting world. Tickets for YachtFest are $34 for general admission for one day or $48 for two days. A preferredaccess badge with priority boarding is $64 for one day or $78 for two days. Guests can also check out the latest in design at YachtFest’s annual fashion show, which benefits the San Diego Armed Services YMCA, on Thursday, Sept. 17, with a reception at 4 p.m. The Saks Fifth Avenue fashion show follows at 5 p.m., also at the Shelter Island Marina. Tickets for the fashion show start at $35 per person. For information and to purchase tickets, call (858) 836-0133, or visit www.yachtfest.com. ■

I have been practicing Family Medicine for 40 years in South Africa and the United States. I began my practice in 1983 here in La Jolla, and it grew from a small intimate practice to a rather large one, now servicing over 3,600 active patients. Every year the pressure to see more people increases, leaving both the patient and the doctor dissatisfied. The dramatic changes in medicine, throughout the years, have made it exceed-

ingly difficult to deliver a high level of personalized service. With this in mind, I am making some important changes in my practice that allow me to take care of my expanded patient base and offer new personalized wellness options and specialty services. Along with the continuation of general medicine, I am excited to announce the implementation of three categories of enhanced services into my practice.
