Leadership Message WELCOME TO OUR REVIEW OF THE 2012-13 SEASON OF SOUTH DAKOTA ATHLETICS. Dear Coyote Nation, After spending the last six years helping guide this program through the Division I transition and building a solid foundation, I couldn’t be more excited to take on the upcoming year as your Athletic Director.

The 2012-13 season was our first as a full NCAA Division I member. All the hard work of our coaches, staff and student-athletes paid off with David Herbster a year filled with incredible accomplishments and Director of Athletics achievements. Our relationships on campus, in the community and with our corporate partners continue to be the backbone of support we need to move forward. I take a great deal of pride in all of our accomplishments and take my duties and responsibilities personally. I have watched this department and campus grow into a Division I institution filled with promise and extraordinary people.

We have the privilege of providing opportunities to young men and women to play a game, get an education and prepare them to be outstanding citizens and leaders in their communities. Their accomplishments this past year break down many of the negative stereotypes of athletes on college campuses. For starters, our student-athletes had a cumulative team GPA of 3.3. We had a scholar-athlete of the year, three NCAA post-graduate scholars, three academic All-Americans, 71 distinguished scholars, 120 academic all-league honorees and 132 placed on the winter/spring Summit League honor roll. To top it off, senior track athlete Alexa Duling won the NCAA Walter Byers Award which is considered to be the NCAA’s highest academic award and awarded to one male and one female student-athlete from all the NCAA’s 1,300 member institutions.

had 93 all-conference performers, four All-Americans and Bethany Buell became USD and the state of South Dakota’s first Division I national champion. In our first full year of conference and NCAA championship participation, we finished third in the Summit League Commissioner’s Cup and moved up 60 spots to 173 in the Learfield Sports Director’s Cup standings – which ranks the competitive performance of all Division I schools.

As we continue progress in bringing to reality our Athletic Facility Master Plan that will add a basketball/volleyball arena, outdoor track and soccer complex, and practice football fields, it is vital that annual revenue streams continue to grow.

Our Howling Pack numbers saw an increase for the seventh consecutive year, season tickets in football and basketball continue to grow, and Coyote Sports Properties has increased our corporate support yet again. We added another radio station to the Coyote Sports Network bringing our total to eight, and saw the introduction of the Coaches Corner radio show and the Coyote Report TV show.

We have entered Division I on solid footing and have built a foundation that will sustain long-term growth. It is never easy, and your continued support is critical to ensuring we can achieve our mission of cultivating academic and athletic excellence in our student-athletes. Pride in being a Coyote is something that should be worn across your chest whether you are at work, in the stands, in the classroom or in competition. Whether you join the Howling Pack, buy a game ticket, or don the Vermillion & White…be heard, be visible and find a way to make a difference.

The Coyotes shined just as bright in competition this year. Men’s indoor track & field won our first Summit League conference championship and Dave Gottsleben was named Coach of the Year. We finished with six athletes earning Most Valuable Player or Most Outstanding Performer in conference or championship play. We

Student-Athlete Academic Achievements South Dakota senior track and field athlete Alexa Duling received the 2013 Walter Byers Postgraduate Scholarship from the NCAA. The award is given to one female and one male athlete each year. To be eligible for the honor, the nominee must have attained an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.5, competed on a varsity team at an NCAA member school, shown superior character and leadership, and demonstrated that participation in athletics and community service positively influenced the recipient’s personal and intellectual development.

Duling (Gregory, S.D.) finished both her baccalaureate and MBA in just five years as a Coyote, while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. She was also named to the Capital One All-America track & field/cross country first team by CoSIDA in 2013. Duling plans to go to medical school in Arizona.

On the track, Duling holds individual school records in the indoor 60 meter hurdles (8.71) and the outdoor 400 meter hurdles (57.40). She was also a member of two record-setting relay teams as part of the outdoor sprint medley (3:53.25) and 4x200 (1:38.93) relays. She earned second-team All-America honors in 2012 after placing 12th in the 400 meter hurdles, where she also qualified for the Olympic Trials. At the outdoor conference meet in May, Duling won the 400m hurdles in a league-record time of 58.59. Duling was named the 2011 Great West Conference Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. In her career, she earned eight individual conference titles.

South Dakota junior cross country and track athlete Jeff Mettler was named Summit League Scholar Athlete of the Year as selected by the league’s faculty athletic representatives. The award is the most prestigious individual honor given by the league.

Mettler (Eureka, S.D.) carries a perfect 4.0 GPA as a kinesiology and sports science major. He was also named to the CoSIDA Academic AllAmerican second team this spring. Mettler is also a year round Academic All-Summit League honoree, earning the honor in cross country, indoor, and outdoor track.

Mettler’s athletic accomplishments are no less impressive. On the cross country course, Mettler had two individual wins in 2012. He also finished runner-up at the Summit League Championship for first-team All-Summit League honors.

On the track, Mettler was named the Summit League Indoor Track Championship MVP after winning the 3,000m (8:18.69), mile (4:11.18), and finishing third in the 5,000m (14:40.28) at the meet. Outdoors, Mettler broke his own 3,000m steeplechase record yet again at the Drake Relays (8:51.99). He successfully defended his steeplechase title at the Summit League Outdoor Championships, while also placing fourth in the 1500m at the meet. Mettler finished off an impressive year with a trip to the NCAA West Preliminaries.

In addition to his work on the track and in the classroom, Mettler serves as president of USD’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and has volunteered with the community engagement group SERVE.

South Dakota 2012-13 All-Americans South Dakota junior track and field athlete Bethany (Buell) Firsick became the first DI National Champion in school history at the NCAA Outdoor Track Championships in June. Despite her struggle with a torn ligament in her shoulder throughout the outdoor season, she managed to clear 14-7.25 on her last jump at the meet.

South Dakota junior track and field athlete Megan Glisar was one of three All-Americans that led the women’s track and field team to an 18th-place finish at the NCAA Championships in June.

Glisar (Sergeant Bluff, Iowa) had a sixth-place finish in the high jump at the outdoor meet.

Firsick (St. Louis, Mo.) adds the national title to her already lengthy list of accomplishments.

Firsick was named the Summit League Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year in both 2012 and 2013.

She was named the Summit League Athlete of the Month for May and June in addition to being Athlete of the Week four different times throughout the year. Firsick has earned four All-America honors and is a five-time conference champion, including her win at the Summit League Indoor Championships earlier this year. It is no surprise that she is also the school record holder for both the indoor (14-5.5) and outdoor (14-7.5) pole vault.

In the classroom, Firsick carries a near-perfect GPA. She was named to the Capital One All-America track & field/cross country first team by CoSIDA, joining teammate Alexa Duling. South Dakota was the only school other than Oregon to have two or more athletes on the first team. Firsick was also named Scholar Field Athlete of the Year by USFTCCCA. During indoor track, she placed on the Academic All-Summit League team.

A past NAIA National Champion, Glisar was this year’s Summit League indoor and outdoor champion in addition to setting school records in the event.

She finished off her season by competing at the USA Champsionship in June.

South Dakota sohphomore track and field athlete Emily Grove was another one of three all-Americans that led the women’s track and field team to an 18th-place finish at the NCAA Championships in June.

For the second year in a row, Grove (Pontiac, Ill.) took home first team AllAmerica honors with her seventh-place finish in the pole vault at the outdoor meet.

Grove also earned Academic All-Summit League honors for outdoor track after capturing pole vault titles at five different meets this outdoor season.

• First-team All-Summit League • Hit .357 with six home runs, 39 RBIs, and 17 runs scored • Ranked fifth in the Summit League in hits • Had 13 multi-hit games and 10 games with two or more RBIs.

Amber Eichkorn, Freshman Wichita, Kan. • Newcomer of the Championship for Cross Country and Indoor Track • Three-time All-Summit League honoree • Finished 56th at the NCAA Cross Country Regional Meet • Won 5,000 meters at Kansas Relays • Broke 5 minutes in the indoor mile after winning the event at the Iowa State Last Chance meet.

USD Fall 2012 Athletic Review Coyote Football

Coyote Volleyball

The inability to win close games doomed South Dakota in its first season under head coach Joe Glenn and in the Missouri Valley Football Conference. The Coyotes lost four games by three points and a fifth by a touchdown.

The team’s lone win came at home against Colgate, an NCAA playoff participant.

South Dakota finished out a challenging season by winning its last five matches. One of those matches included a 3-0 sweep of defending conference champion North Dakota State, which had not been done since 2003. The Coyotes also swept South Dakota State in a home and away series, and have now won seven of the last eight matches against SDSU. Sophomore Kendall Kritenbrink was named to the all-Summit League team, and was also a three-time offensive player of the week selection. Sydney Dimke earned Summit League honors as well and was named to the all-Freshman team.

Senior Will Powell became USD’s all-time leader in touchdown receptions with 21. He, along with junior linebacker Tyler Starr, earned all-MVFC honors. Sophomore quarterback Josh Vander Maten proved to be a dualthreat in the Coyotes’ new offense, rushing for nearly 500 yards, throwing for 1,600 more and combining for 13 touchdowns.

Coyote Soccer South Dakota’s fight showed more than ever during the 2012 season.

The Coyotes, a team with three upperclassmen, finished the year with two wins, three ties and lost five matches by just one goal. On Oct. 19, USD beat rival North Dakota State, which finished fourth in the Summit League. Senior Erin Bello was named to the Academic All-Summit League team after leading the team in assists and scoring three goals. Junior Jenny Teslow was named to the all-Summit League team after finishing the season with a team-high of five goals and totaling 11 points on the season.

Coyote Cross Country The USD men’s and women’s seasons were highlighted by second-place finishes at the Summit League Championships held in Rochester, Mich. Seven Coyotes earned all-Summit League honors at the meet, including junior Jeff Mettler who was the runner-up in the men’s 8K race.

The Coyotes swept Newcomer of the Championship awards as freshmen Amber Eichkorn and Mubarik Musa placed 11th and eighth, respectively.

Junior Megan Hilson placed sixth to lead the USD women.

In their first Division I postseason competition, the Coyote men placed 12th and women took 14th at the NCAA regional meet in Springfield, Mo. Senior Ethan Marquardt finished 38th to lead the men while Eichkorn finished 56th to lead the women.

Coyote Women’s Basketball

The Coyotes competed in the Summit League tournament for the first time this year, falling to Western Illinois in the first round by one point.

USD played a tough non-conference schedule that included Iowa, Gonzaga and Kansas State. Head coach Dave Boots recorded his 500th win at South Dakota with a 74-71 win versus rival South Dakota State on Jan. 5. In that game, Juevol Myles and Brandon Bos combined for 38 points. Senior Juevol Myles ended the season ranked 11th in Div. I free-throw percentage, while USD ranked third as a team at 78 percent. Myles was also named to the Summit League all-newcomer team.

South Dakota wrapped up an impressive season under new head coach Amy Williams. The Coyotes went 10-6 in the Summit League and 19-16 overall. USD placed second in the Summit League conference tournament, falling to South Dakota State by three points. Sophomore Nicole Seekamp was named Summit League Tournament MVP after scoring 62 points in the three games.

Coyote Indoor Track & Field

The men’s indoor track and field team won South Dakota’s first Summit League team title, while the women finished third. Coyote presence on the championship meet award stand was also noticeable. Freshmen Christian Nielsen and Amber Eichkorn swept the Newcomer of the Championship Awards, junior Jeff Mettler was named Track Championship MVP, and Coach Gottsleben was named Summit League Coach of the Year (men).

In the first year of post-season eligibility for indoor track, the women sent Bethany (Buell) Firsick to the NCAA Indoor National Championships, where she earned All-America honors with a sixth-place finish in the pole vault.

After the Summit League Tournament, USD was invited to participate in the WBI postseason tournament, marking the team’s third-consecutive postseason appearance. The ’Yotes powered through the tournament to make a Final Four appearance before falling at home to McNeese State.

Senior Tempest Wilson was named to the all-Summit League team after averaging 13 points per game.

Junior Nicole Seekamp was named to the Summit League all-newcomer team.

Coyote Swimming & Diving

South Dakota swimmers and divers combined to earn 16 all-League honors at the 2013 Summit League Championship Meet hosted by Oakland in late February. Freshman diver Dustin Gens (3-meter) and senior swimmer Shannon Moceri (100-yard breaststroke) each earned League championships. Their efforts helped paced the USD women and men to fifth- and sixth-place finishes, respectively, in the team competition.

Coyote Softball

The University of South Dakota had it’s first-ever DI National Champion in June when Bethany (Buell) Firsick cleared 14’7 1/4” to take home the pole vault title.

South Dakota qualified for its first Summit League Tournament in its first year of eligibility.

With help from All-American teammates Megan Glisar (6th, high jump) and Emily Grove (7th, pole vault), the women’s program tied for 18th in the country. Meghan Dennis and Cody Snyder also competed in the throws. Snyder was the first male athlete to qualify for the NCAA Championships.

Earlier in the season, both the men’s and women’s programs finished runner-up at the Summit League meet. The Coyotes swept the Newcomer of the Championship awards between Dennis and Christian Nielsen.

The Coyotes had five all-Summit Leaguers in Yvon Minogue, Matley Jones, Katie Cochran, Katie Dinning and Erica Denney. Minogue led the team with a batting average of .357, while Denney won 17 games in the circle and had an ERA of 2.24.

USD ended with a 29-20 record, the team’s best mark since 2009. Regular season highlights included 3-0 sweeps over South Dakota State and UMKC.

In addition to a national champion, the 2013 outdoor track and field season had a Walter Byers Scholar in Alexa Duling, a Summit League Scholar Athlete of the Year in Jeff Mettler, three CoSIDA Academic AllAmericans, and seven new school records.

Coyote Women’s Tennis The Coyotes qualified for the four-team Summit League Tournament in their first year of eligibility. South Dakota was 4-3 in League play and 16-11 in duals throughout the academic year.

Sophomore Yamini Reddy earned All-League and Academic All-League honors with a 22-7 singles record.

USD’s top player, first-year Milica Pavlovic, earned 11 wins in both singles and doubles competition.

Coyote Golf The men’s team finished runner-up at the Summit League Tournament after shooting 899, only 19 strokes behind champion UMKC. The finish was a team effort, as the Coyotes were the only squad to have all five golfers in the top-25.

Sophomore Sam Matthew and freshman Miles Death led the team by tying for sixth, just outside of all-Summit League honors.

Matthew led the men with a 74.87 stroke average, while sophomore Jordan Rearick led the women at 84.48.

The women finished ninth in the Summit League, behind freshman Victoria Grasso’s 28th-place finish. Teammates junior Hailey Sheldahl and senior Nicole Funck finished 34th and 37th, respectively.

At the Creighton Classic, sophomore Stephanie Rogers recorded the Coyotes’ best round of the season, a four-over-par 76.

Team Academic Accomplishments Team Academic Awards Both the South Dakota men and women’s cross country teams were named All-Academic teams by U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The men’s program was ranked 5th with a cumulative GPA of 3.54, while the women were ranked 6th with a 3.71 cumulative GPA. The men and women’s track and field teams were named All-Academic teams by United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Each program ranked in the top-10 nationally for team GPA. The women hold a 3.53 cumulative GPA, the seventh best mark in the country. Meanwhile, the men rank 10th with a cumulative GPA of 3.31. The men and women have been named All-Academic teams for four and five consecutive years, respectively.

The South Dakota women’s swimming and diving received College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Scholar All-American honors for the fall of 2012. The women held a 3.13 team GPA for the fall semester. The College Swimming Coaches Association of America presents the Team Scholar All-American award to college and university swimming and diving teams who have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

Women’s basketball was named to the WBCA Honor Roll for the fifth straight year. The team finished with a GPA of 3.368 for the year, 24th among all NCAA Division I women’s basketball teams.

Men’s golf received the NCAA Public Recognition Award for the third straight year in 2012-13. The award is given to teams with an NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR) in the top 10 percent of all teams in their respective sports. Based on a 1,000 point scale, men’s golf had a

perfect rating with a mark of 1,000. Overall, 12 of USD’s 17 programs scored more than 975.

Women’s tennis received the Summit League Team Academic Achievement Award, which is given in each of the league’s 19 sponsored sports to the team with the highest percentage of list-eligible student athletes. The tennis team had all six of their eligible players make the Commissioner’s List.

They were also the only tennis program in the Summit League to be named an Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Academic team for achieving a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or above. The Coyotes turned in a team GPA of 3.42. It is the eighth time in the last nine years that the Coyotes’ have been named an All-Academic Team.

Women’s volleyball became one of 130 Division I teams to earn the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for the 2012-13 season.

The award honors teams that displayed excellence the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade point average. The Coyotes held a GPA of 3.38 this year.

Women’s softball recorded a 3.48 GPA for the 201213 school year, which was the 10th-best in the nation according to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

They had the second-highest team GPA in the Summit League, behind University of Nebraska-Omaha.

By the Numbers 3 Capital One Academic All-Americans. CoSIDA named Bethany Buell (St. Louis, Mo.) and Alexa Duling (Gregory, S.D.) to the first team while Jeff Mettler (Eureka S.D.) made the second team. Mettler was an Academic AllDistrict honoree last year.

5 Coyotes earned ITA Scholar-Athlete status for earning a GPA of at least 3.5 for the current academic year. Those members include senior Veronika Makashov (Richmond Hill, Ontario), juniors Maddy Warder (Sioux City, Iowa) and Michelle Elkin (Omaha, Neb.), and sophomores Nina Barudzic (Kragujevac, Serbia) and Yamini Reddy (Bangalore, India). USD has had 34 individual award winners in the last nine seasons.

8 track and field athletes earned United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic status. Mettler and Erik Hill (Tea, S.D.) were named to the men’s team, while Buell, Duling, Megan Glisar (Sergeant Bluff, Iowa), Emily Grove (Pontiac, Ill.), Madison Mills (Reno, Nev.), and Hunter Wilkes (Chandler, Ariz.) were named to the women’s team. Additionally, Buell was named the USTFCCCA Scholar Field Athlete of the Year. To qualify for the USTFCCA All-Academic Track & Field Team, students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 and participate at any round of the NCAA Championships.

14 South Dakota student-athletes placed on the Academic All-Summit League teams in 2012-13. To be eligible for academic all-conference athletes must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.3 and have participated in 50 percent of their team’s contests. The teams are voted on by the institutions’ faculty athletic representatives and sports information directors.

14 of the 17 Coyote teams have cumulative GPAs of 3.0 or higher, with the cross country programs leading the way. The women’s cross country team has a GPA of 3.70 while the men’s team holds a 3.54. As a whole, South Dakota’s athletic teams have a 3.30 cumulative GPA. 16 student-athletes have maintained a cumulative 4.0 GPA. Five of those athletes come from the cross country team (three women, two men) and five from track and field (three women, two men).

34 student-athletes were featured on the Missouri Valley Football Conference Honor Roll, which required a 3.0 GPA for the fall semester. Senior Will Powell (Sioux Falls, S.D.) and junior Kyle Cichos (Pierre, S.D.) earned

the conference’s highest academic achievement by capturing the MVFC President’s Council Academic Excellence Award.

108 South Dakota student-athletes earned Distinguished Scholar status (3.6 or higher for semester in which he/she competed) from the Summit League.

South Dakota had the second highest number of student-athletes earn Distinguished Scholar status out of all member schools.

120 individual student-athletes made the Summit League Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence. Women’s track and field led the way with 27 honorees, followed by women’s swimming and diving with 17 and men’s track and field with 16.

184 student-athletes made the Summit League Honor Roll, which requires a 3.0 GPA in the semester they compete in addition to using a year of eligibility.

208 student-athletes have maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Coyotes in the Community “Girls on the Run”

Summit League Food Fight

In 2012, the Coyote women’s track and field team teamed up with Sioux Falls YWCA for the third straight year to put on the “Girls on the Run” program in Vermillion. Athletes serve as mentors for the younger girls, helping them learn about being active as part of a healthy lifestyle. At the end of the program, the Coyotes run alongside the younger girls during a 5 kilometer race.

As part of a Summit League competition against all nine member institutions, South Dakota asked fans to bring non-perishable food items or make a monetary donation at five home athletic events.

Student-athletes were stationed by shopping carts to encourage monetary donations.

The athletic department also reached out to Vermillion Middle School, providing a pizza party to the three classes that collected the most food items.

The proceeds raised from the food fight were distributed to the Vermillion Food Pantry.

Special Olympics A group of Coyotes met twice a week throughout the spring semester to volunteer with Special Olympics in Vermillion. The student-athletes played basketball with the kids every Thursday morning and Friday afternoon.

SAAC Field Day At the 2013 Coyote Field Day in April, a total of 42 elementary school students enjoyed games and activities prepared by SAAC members. The kids enjoyed activities ranging from “Punt, Pass and Kick” with the football team to dodgeball with the men’s and women’s basketball teams to kickball with the women’s soccer team.

‘Mitten Toss’ Winter Clothing Drive Coyote athletes worked with Vermillion Public Schools to collect hats, mittens, scarves, and coats.

A “mitten toss” was also orchestrated at half-time of a men’s basketball game for additional donations.

Overall, 200 items were donated to the Pine Ridge Reservation.

The commitment to Division I required an upgrade in our scholarship offerings throughout our 17 sports. USD put together a plan to increase the annual scholarship offerings from 105 to 186 while maintaining Title IX compliance. This increase in scholarship offerings has created the need to generate significantly more revenue. Two areas were identified to be the vehicles to assist in financially funding the increased scholarship offerings – the annual fund and major gifts. The Howling Pack serves as the annual fund and Great Expectations serves as the major gift component of the equation. The Great Expectations scholarship campaign is designed to fill the immediate needs of Division I until our annual fundraising, The Howling Pack, matures to fund the increased expenses of Division I.

Supporting the Coyotes Supporting the Team Behind the Team The support provided by our donors, alumni and fans have provided the scholarships needed to attract the top student-athletes and provide them the necessary resources to be successful. Success in athletic competition is a long-standing tradition at USD and we will continue this tradition as a full member of NCAA Division I.

Great Expectations Scholarships are very important to the success of a Division I institution.

Donors who pledge $60,000 (or $15,000 per year over four years) have the opportunity to name their scholarship and designate preference for a sport.

Since 2007, over $2 million has been raised through Great Expectations.

Recent Alumni Since 2010, the Howling Pack has offered all recent alumni of the University of South Dakota the opportunity to join. For the first five years after receiving their undergraduate degree, recent alumni receive a Howling Pack membership at the White Club Level ($100-$299) for a reduced price on a graduated scale outlined below. By joining the Howling Pack, recent alumni can ensure themselves access to tickets and other benefits.

Endowments The department of athletics generated nearly $124,600 from its 44 endowments in 2012-13. As of June 30, 2013, the value of the total athletic endowment was $3,005,000.

Supporting the Coyotes Howling Pack The mission of the Howling Pack is to promote and financially support the University of South Dakota athletic department and all of the individual athletic teams while encouraging the development of the student-athlete. Each year the Howling Pack sponsors events to raise money, generate interest and engage alumni, fans and friends. Gifts by Howling Pack members support scholarships and provide all Coyote student-athletes the necessary resources to be successful academically and athletically. During the 2012-13 season, Howling Pack membership increased to 817 members who contributed a record $479,474.

2013 Summer Golf Tour The 2013 Coyote Golf Tour made its traditional stops throughout the state of South Dakota - Rapid City, Sioux Falls and Dakota Dunes.

The tour was a great success as first-time golf tour participants joined the seasoned regulars. Fans enjoyed the opportunity to meet with coaches, staff and enjoy a round of golf with other Coyote fans. The money raised by participation will go towards the athletic program and support of student-athletes.

Coyote Sports Properties/Learfield Sports Founding Partners The University of South Dakota partnered with prominent collegiate sports marketer Learfield Sports to serve as its multimedia rights holder and exclusive athletics marketing partner beginning with the 201112 athletic season.
