what this stamp actually means… This stamp is used throughout our magazine. It’s there to clue you in on if an image has – or hasn’t – been retouched, if readers (just like you!) have been used in our shoot, or to explain just how much effort (and how many people) go into creating the shot that makes it in the mag. We hope these help YOU with your self-esteem goals and make you aware that there’s more to these images than meets the eye.

#GIRLGANG! Our Model Search 2017 finalists
igi, Bella, Cara, Kendall, Karlie… These girls define the statement ‘not just a pretty face’. They’re smart, confident, stylish and work seriously hard. In fact, when you think about it, supermodels are actually kickass role models. In July, I toured the country with the Girlfriend Priceline Pharmacy Model Search to help discover Australia’s next generation of modelling It-girls, and maybe even find our answer to Cara. The ~iconic~ Sam Harris got her start through the comp back when she was 13, and we were lucky enough to have her join us as a special guest at the roadshows. It was pretty great having a legit supermodel there to direct your questions to (coz let’s face it, modelling is not my strong suit), and I know Sam was genuinely touched by the amount of girls who named her as their biggest inspiration. Together, we met over 1500 of you and IT. WAS. AMAZING. You are amazing! Hands down the best part of the whole experience was getting to know so many incredible GF readers and hearing all your individual stories.
And little did you know, I was taking notes the whole time… Here are just a few of the interesting facts I gathered from you, about you: • Your most favourite celebrity is the divine Emma Watson (same) • You love yourselves some eyeshadow, but highlighter comes a close second • YouTube is life – you’re obsessed with Shani Grimmond and spend a LOT of time watching the Dolan Twins (obvs) • You’re crazy talented at sports, singing, acting, styling, makeup, dance… AND SO MANY OTHER THINGS – you’re going to conquer the world! Naming only six national finalists wasn’t easy, but we’re so excited to introduce you to our 2017 Model Search line-up: Madelaine, Sameerah, Taylor, Jodie, Tamara-Kate and Nevaya. Check out the girls’ first ever photoshoot on page 70. And I can’t wait to meet even more fresh faces next year!

Girlfriend Magazine is totally awesome and I look forward to receiving it in the mail every month. My favourite section is definitely the embarrassing stories, as I can totally relate to most! *Bahaha* I also loveeee the book and movie recommendation section!! I love reading so much and I aspire to be an author one day myself. Girlfriend Magazine always makes me believe I can do anything – even with my autism! Thank you! <3 Isabella
Hi Girlfriend, I’m Michaela and I just love your magazine. My favourite sections are the style tips and embarrassing stories. I love the mag because it just makes me smile. It is such a good magazine. Love your numberone fan, Michaela Aww, this made us smile too xx
I have all the Girlfriend magazines since 2009. My favourite sections are style crush, the advice for school, the celeb gossip, posters, fashion, embarrassing stories, food recipes and Girlfriend Feels. I always read the magazine pages top to bottom, and I can’t just read parts of the magazine and read more later – I have to read the whole thing without a break! I always get excited when the new mag is delivered to my house! Lily Since 2009?! That’s incred, Lily!

If you’re watching season two and are thinking Reggie has really changed... no, your eyes aren’t deceiving you. Ross Butler played the haughty football player in the first season, but was unable to sign on for season two because he was also in 13 Reasons Why and is busy filming their second season. His replacement is Charles Melton, who is a total babe just like Ross, and has appeared in Glee and American Horror Story.

Moose Mason’s long-time girlfriend, and friends with Betty and Veronica. Although we haven’t seen her on the show, she has been mentioned.

GET THE LOOK Let’s be honest, we watch the show for the fashion as much as the drama. Each character has their own individual ~lewk~ and they rock it. The woman responsible for transforming the cast into their characters is costume designer Rebekka Sorensen-Kjelstrup. Rebekka likes to take inspiration directly from the traditional Archie comics, but give it a fresh spin so it’s on trend rn.
JUGHEAD
Juggy’s hat is absolutely iconic from the Archie comics, and it’s so cool that Rebekka found a way to make it work. He’s got a quirky vibe and favours dark casual clothes. The Serpents leather jacket was completely different for Jughead and instantly transformed him.
VERONICA
The brunette beauty is more fashion forward than Betty and likes to look a million bucks. She wears black and dark jewel tones, and favours structured dresses and skirts over jeans. The cape she loves to wear gives her that bit of mystery, and the pearls are a tribute to Holly Golightly – who is her literary hero.
girlfriend.com.a u
BETTY
The pretty blonde wears lots of her signature colour – pink – just like in the comics. She has that wholesome, girl-nextdoor vibe with jeans, sweaters, collared tops and cardigans. She’s a pastel dream in dainty floral prints, which is what makes it so surprising when she transforms into Dark Betty. 15
ARCHIE
Like Betty, he has the all-American thing going when it comes to his clothes. Usually seen in blue jeans, white tees or baseball tees and his letterman jacket, he looks like the hot jock every girl has a crush on.
girlfriendMAG
CHERYL
Riverdale’s fierce mean girl is also a total bombshell and always looks flawless. She dresses to ensure all eyes are on her and her signature colour is red, like her hair. She often has a vintage element to her look and likes to wear items that have a costume feel, like lace gloves. Her spider brooches hint that she’s dangerous.
THE PEMBROOKE The Permanent Building
The hotel Veronica and Hermione live in is filmed in a grand historical building in downtown Vancouver called The Permanent Building. It’s been used for many films and can be hired out as an event space for fancy parties and weddings.
Archie’s home is a real house, not a set, and has become a popular spot for fans to stop for pics. If you’re planning on going, remember a real family lives there.
SISTERS OF QUIET MERCY: HOME FOR TROUBLED YOUTHS Riverview Hospital
One of the creepiest spots in the series is the home for troubled youths that Betty and Jughead visit to rescue Polly. It was filmed at the Riverview Hospital in Coquitlam, which was once a mental asylum. It’s now an abandoned building and is considered to be one of the most haunted places in Canada.
ARCHIE'S HOUSE 2037 East 3rd Ave, Vancouver
While the US town of Riverdale is fictional, most of the locations they shoot the series at are real. Filming takes place in Vancouver, Canada, and if you’re ever in the area, you can check out these familiar landmarks.
POP'S CHOCK'LIT SHOPPE Rocko's Family Diner
TWILIGHT DRIVE-IN Twilight Drive-In
The drive-in and Jughead’s former home is actually a real, working drive-in with the same name as it appears in the show. It’s located in Langley and is very busy during the summer.
JOHN SWEETWATER RIVER Alouette Lake and Alice Lake
Probably the number-one spot you’d want to visit if you could go to Riverdale is Pop’s Chock’lit Shoppe! It’s filmed at a real Canadian diner called Rocko’s Family Diner and is located in Mission. As you’d expect, it’s a very popular place to get a burger and shake these days.
The infamous river that kicked off all the drama in the very first episode isn’t even a river! It’s actually two different lakes. Jason Blossom’s death and the other Sweetwater River scenes were filmed at Alouette Lake in Golden Ears Provincial Park, Maple Ridge, and Alice Lake in Brackendale, British Columbia.
THORNHILL MANSION Copperstone Mansion
RIVERDALE HIGH Lord Byng High School
The Blossom family home is another one that is actually owned by a family. It’s called Copperstone Mansion IRL and is in South Langley. It’s set behind gates, so not so good for sightseeing. Even though the show makes it look scary and gloomy, it’s actually very pretty.
The exteriors of Riverdale High are Lord Byng High School, which you can find at West 16th Street in Vancouver. Imagine going to the school where Riverdale is filmed!

TEAM GF MATT TAMARA
FAVE: Betty Cooper, because under her butter-wouldn’t-melt exterior, she’s kind of a badass – she’s brave, knows what she wants and she’ll stop at nothing to get to the truth. WANTS: More backstory revealed around the parents of Riverdale. We all know *something* went down in their day, so what was it?!
BIANCA
FAVE: Archie Andrews, because look at his face. WANTS: To see a bit more from his character development this season, and I think with his dad being shot we’re gonna get ~Dark Archie~.
FAVE: Jughead Jones, because not only is he a babe, he’s also a writer so we have that in common! WANTS: To see more of the history between the Blossom and Cooper families. Now that we know they’re related, I’d love to see why they parted ways.
BREE
FAVE: Cheryl Blossom, because she’s a total knockout, super-feisty and gets the best quotes. WANTS: A relationship for Cheryl! And you know it’s gotta have drama, so I’m thinking Betty’s long-lost brother would be wild…
WHO SHOULD YOU DATE? CAN’T PICK BETWEEN RIVERDALE ’S HOTTEST GUYS… TAKE THIS QUIZ TO PICK ! A LANE ONCE AND FOR ALL
Chocolate or Vanilla? Sporty or Arty? Chatty or Brooding? Curious or Daring? Parties or Gatherings? Movies or Netflix? Burger or Hotdog? Reading or Running? Singing or Writing? Mornings or Nights? MOSTLY WHITE – ARCHIE ANDREWS The confident jock is the one for you! You like that he doesn’t take things too seriously and is always up for a good time. But you also like that he has a sensitive side.
MOSTLY BLUE – JUGHEAD JONES The quiet, serious, brooding babe is your dream guy. You like that he is always there for his friends and is a great listener. But you also appreciate that he stands up for himself and has a unique sense of humour.

ERRYTHING YOU NEED TO GET YOUR LIFE ~SORTED~. IN THIS ISSUE: Fix your study sitch / Recover from a bad rep / Find out how to ask your ’rents anything (and we mean anything).
Stress free
study
Because freaking out definitely won’t help you
t
rust us when we tell you that we’d rather be lurking Larry theories on Tumblr than studying, but exam time is important for your future and we know you want to ace it. So we’ve figured out some ways to help make studying (almost) stress free.
organisation is key When you feel like the only thing more stressful than studying is securing tickets to Ed Sheeran’s concert, you need to make a plan. Your workload can pile up super quickly, and if you’re not on top of it, it will bury you. Create a to-do list that maps out everything, with due dates highlighted. Prioritise every item from ‘code red’ to ‘girl, you’ve still got time’. Keep in mind that if you have a huge assignment due, you might want to break it down into small parts and give yourself mini deadlines over the next few weeks, so you won’t have to write half a novel in one night. Once you have a clear schedule you can start going through the list. And we all know there’s nothing more satisfying than crossing something off.
attitude, darling When you’re just not feeling it, take a creative break. Find some inspiring, positive quotes that give you that ‘I got this’ moment and write or draw them on some paper to pin up above your study area. You could even frame them and place them around your room to help spread those positive vibes to motivate you to study. You could also write a list of awesome things you’re going to do when your exams are over, and look at that whenever you need to feel like there is a light at the end of this tunnel.
zen zone A super-quick way to reduce pre-study stress is to have a clean and organised workspace. Clean up your desk, throw away any unwanted papers or rubbish, and make a space for your notes, laptop and books. Arrange your study notes by subject and make sure that you have all the notes you need to prepare yourself for the assignment or exam. If you’ve missed a day at school and need to catch up, email your teacher or a classmate for notes. Do it ASAP so you’re not scrambling when exam time rolls around.

do not disturb TBH, tearing yourself away from Instagram is probably going to be the most challenging part about sitting down and actually studying. But a self-imposed ban from that and your other socials will be worth it in the exam hall, we promise! The best way to do that is to switch your phone to ‘do not disturb’ mode. That way you’ll still get those all-important notifications and phone calls, like when In Stereo make one of their famous announcements.
breaking (isn’t) bad Breaks are important. We’re not talking about the kinda breaks where you accidentally binge watch Riverdale all over again, we’re talking about the kind that help you calm down, refocus and gain a fresh perspective. Be mindful of how you spend your time between study sessions. Try going for a walk or run. Studies show regular exercise helps us to think better and focus on what needs to be done. Meditate or do breathing exercises to help clear your mind of distractions and allow your brain to re-group. You aren’t going to feel great being slumped over a desk all day, so take breaks to stretch your muscles, shake off any negativity and get back to work.
avoid sugar! We love peanut butter M&M’s as much as the next person, but if you have hits of artificial sugar while you study you’ve already set yourself up to crash and burn. Yes, artificial sugar (think lollies, chips, sneaky spoonfuls of Nutella and all the delicious stuff) gives you bursts of energy and may allow you to focus, but it’s only for a very limited amount of time. You’ll then hit a slump once it wears off. Alternatively, if you fuel your body with good kinds of fats and natural sugars (avocados and bananas), they will give you that muchneeded energy boost and laser-like focus for much longer, helping you breeze through your study sesh.

This is awkward, but I want to talk to my mum about periods because we learnt about them at school, and even though I don’t have mine yet, I’m worried about not being ready when it happens. Like not having the right things. My mum has never talked about it with me so I feel embarrassed to talk to her about it.
Kim says: This can be awkward,
especially if your mum doesn’t speak openly about periods. Some parents don’t want to make their daughters feel embarrassed so they don’t bring it up. It might be a nice surprise for your mum if you approach her to discuss it. Start the conversation by letting her know your school gave a talk about periods and you have some questions. Let her know your concerns and ask her if she can help you to be prepared for when they arrive. Be brave. Once you start the conversation, it won’t be as embarrassing as you might think and could even bring you and your mum closer together.

My parents are really, really strict when it comes to dating. I have a boyfriend at school and I want to be able to do things like go to the movies with just him and for coffee dates, but I don’t know how to ask my parents. I don’t want to lie to them.

Kim says: Congratulations for being
honest and wanting to go about this the right way. My first thought is do your parents know your boyfriend very well? If they don’t, my first tip would be to get them together as much as possible. Build up the trust your parents have in your boyfriend. No parent wants to leave their daughter alone with someone they don’t know or trust. Your job is to help your parents and your boyfriend build a relationship. This might sound annoying, or like hard work, but believe me it will pay off. Invite your boyfriend over to your house to spend some time with you and your family. There are three huge benefits to doing this: one, your parents will get to know him; two, you can see how dedicated he is to you (any boy who takes time for your family is a keeper); and three, it will show him your family values and how he is expected to treat you. Once your parents build up trust in you and your boyfriend, they will be more likely to say ‘yes’ to letting you spend time together alone. When parents are strict, you need to take things slow. Building trust is the key!
I’ve done ballet since I was five and I’ve decided I don’t really like it any more (I’m 14 now). My mum is obsessed with me doing ballet and I don’t know how to tell her I don’t enjoy it any more. I feel like it’s too much pressure. I feel bad, though, because I know my parents have also spent lots of money on classes and costumes and stuff.
Some of my friends get pocket money from their parents and I want to ask my parents for some. I’m only 13 so I can’t get a job yet, but when I’m old enough I plan to.
Kim says: This can be difficult,
Kim says: This is a great question
especially when you know your mum and dad have invested so much into your ballet classes. It’s never fun feeling like you’re letting people down, especially if you’re already feeling like you have a lot of pressure on you. My advice is to tell your parents how you really feel. Instead of saying you don’t like your ballet any more, explain why. Tell them the pressures you’re feeling and the impact it’s having on your thoughts, emotions and life. Your parents sound very supportive of what’s important to you, so I’m sure they have your best interests at heart. You never know – after some good time away from ballet, you might find you miss it and want to go back! Things change, interests change and your parents will understand this, even if it takes some time.

and good on you for being proactive with wanting to make money! This can be a difficult conversation to have with your parents, especially if there are any financial difficulties in your family. Many parents would love to give their children pocket money, but might not be able to afford it, so I’ll answer this in two parts. When asking for pocket money, you need to go in with a plan. What are you willing to do for the pocket money? What would help your parents most? The worst thing you can say is you’ll clean your room (you should already be doing this). What do your parents hate doing? Vacuuming? Cleaning the car? This is what you need to offer them. If you know your parents can’t really afford regular pocket money, perhaps you could do some one-off jobs around the house. Once a month you could ask to do something and get paid for it – this way your parents won’t be locked in if money is tight. Remember, money can be tough sometimes for parents, so never try to make them feel guilty if they can’t afford it.

I’m 16 years old, my sister is 12 and my brother’s 10. My mum still treats me like a kid and I don’t think it’s fair because I’m so much older, but I’m not allowed to do all the things my friends are allowed to. All my friends are planning on going to a music festival and I really want to go. How can I make my mum see I’m old enough?
Kim says: It can be tough when you’re the eldest. Your parents may still see you in the same way they see your younger siblings and may not realise you’re more mature. So, here’s the best way to handle this. Start small and start talking. Start with little requests – asking if you can stay out a bit later, or go somewhere new on your own. When you find something they say yes to, do it right, follow their rules and prove you are reliable. When you get home, share your experience. The more you communicate with your parents, the more they will see your maturity. This builds their trust and faith in you. The worst thing you can do is ask a big request that’s way too scary for your parents. Starting small will help them get used to you doing new things. Also remember, fighting with them won’t help. Show them you’re not a kid any more. If they are stuck on saying ‘no’, make a smaller request. It’s about negotiating! 31

REP UTA TIO N So you’ve mucked up big time, and now the whole world knows. Or someone’s spread a rumour and it’s lit – in a bad way. If your rep’s in the gutter it doesn’t have to stay there. Here’s how to make an all-time comeback.
Heaps chill
eople can say that reps don’t matter and, yeah, they kinda don’t (more on that in a sec). But man, when people are talking behind your back 24/7 and everyone treats you like you’re personally responsible for breaking up One Direction, it sure feels like the end of the world. The good news is, most of the time you can turn the nasty around and climb back on top.
girlfriend. com. a u
If things have juuust gone down and rumours are flying, the best thing to do for now is lay low. Not that you can’t go hang with your friends, or hit that cool party, but don’t try to talk about the rumours with anyone. Just act like they aren’t doing the rounds. This is super hard to do, especially when people are treating you weirdly and you see others talking about you. But getting wound up can just fuel the ~drama~. You want the noise to die down before you start work on that rep – and 100 per cent, it will. You’ve just gotta give the rumour mill time to get bored. 32

Build it up Whether the people you’ve hurt will give you the time of day or not, building people’s trust again is way important in getting a solid rep back. Look for opportunities to prove you’re not the person people think you are. If your rep is being a bad friend, look out for times you can support the pals you still have, and even other people. Maybe that girl who spends lunch alone would love a buddy, or team up in PE with someone who tends to get left out.
Bad liars
If the sitch is that someone’s spread a nasty rumour about you that’s either untrue or was private stuff, the best thing you can do is to live life with your head held high, hanging with the pals who love and accept you, and forget the haters. Whenever anyone comes to ask you if the rumours are true, just calmly say no. If they are true and it was just private stuff that shouldn’t have been made public, it’s better to just say the rumours are dumb and you’re not even bothering to talk about them. It makes it seem like they’re not true, without you having to lie! Yasss.
WORDS KATE COUTTAS PHOTGRAPHY NETFLIX
Is it too late now to say sorry? Coming back from a bad rep that you – eek – kinda created yourself is different from one where someone’s out to ruin you for no reason. If you did something kinda shady, like kiss your best mate’s boyfriend at a party or spread lies about someone and got found out, the next step to fixing your rep is owning your mistakes. Apologise to the people you need to apologise to – ideally in person but, if that’s not possible, a written letter or email is a good way to express your feels. Make it honest and heartfelt. They may not forgive you, but recognising you were in the wrong and reaching out shows you’re serious about doing better.
Like, whatever At the end of the day, a reputation is nothing. Like, literally! It’s nothing! It’s what other people think you are vs who you actually are. Living your life as the A+ legend you are is the best thing you can do – for you and for fixing the bad rep. But if the rumours just won’t shake, remember that once school’s over, your rep is over too. Just throw on T-Swift’s ‘Shake It Off’ each morning, so the chorus gets stuck in your head. Eventually, all that positivity will have you giving zero effs about what anyone’s saying or thinking about you.
Flip It & Reverse It These celebs turned their bad reps around by being way bigger than the ~drama~.
TAYLOR SWIFT Tay’s beef with Kanye (um, that phone call) and Katy Perry could’ve shut her career down. But she said her piece, ignored all the extra drama and kept being the boss she is. She’s mastered that whole “when they go low, you go high” thing.
JUSTIN BIEBER It was pretty hard to be a Belieber around 2013-2014. We love him hard but we have to admit… he was an A-grade jerk back then. Drinkdriving charges, abandoning his pet monkey (where R U now OG Mally?), breaking Queen Selena’s heart… we could get mad all over again just thinking about it. But, hey, he apologised and has been working hard to do better. You’re forgiven and we heart you, JB.
ARIANA GRANDE Remember that time someone filmed Ari saying she “hated” Americans? She made a statement apologising for it, then kept rolling out the hits, as well as proving she’s a ledge by organising charity events like the Manchester One Love concert. Everyone makes mistakes.
But you don't “ LOOK SICK “
Just because someone doesn’t visibly appear ill, doesn’t mean they aren’t. Invisible illnesses are far more common than we realise.
w
hen Selena Gomez cut short her Stars Dance tour and checked into a rehab facility back in January 2014, the tabloids wrongly speculated that she was having problems with drugs or alcohol. When she finally admitted it was to help cope with the effects of an autoimmune disease called lupus, which causes fatigue, joint pain and depression, everyone was stunned. “I was diagnosed with lupus, and I’ve been through chemotherapy. That’s what my break was really about,” she confessed to Billboard magazine. “I wanted so badly to say: ‘You guys have no idea. I’m in chemotherapy. You’re assholes.’ But I was angry I even felt the need to say that.” The problem – aside from the lupus itself – is that Selena doesn’t look how a sick person is ‘supposed’ to look. She’s young, vibrant and healthy-looking, with great hair and clear skin. And Selena’s not the only one. Bella Hadid, 20, has Lyme disease, which causes pain and exhaustion. Miley Cyrus has hypoglycemia, which affects her blood sugar levels and she gets sick if she doesn’t eat well. Sarah Hyland has kidney dysplasia and needed a kidney transplant. But if these celebs didn’t speak out about their conditions, we would never even know they were sick. Invisible illnesses are far more common than we realise – simply because we can’t see them. In fact, one in five Australians has a disability, and a massive 90 per cent of those are unseen. You may not know it from looking at them, but it’s very likely a few of your classmates and friends are struggling with an invisible illness.
They may be dealing with problems like crippling pain, seizures, anxiety and exhaustion, but to make it worse, they often also have to cope with people who don’t believe they’re ill. Just like Selena, one of the hardest things for people who have chronic, unseen conditions is hearing: “But you don’t LOOK sick!”
know more about their condition and how to support them. If you’re dealing with a chronic condition, don’t feel embarrassed to talk about it if you want to. Friends, teachers or bosses may struggle to understand, but it can help if you’re willing to talk about it. You may find people are curious about your condition and want to know how to help, or you may find other people are going through similar things. It’s also important to surround yourself with friends who are supportive, even when your condition interrupts plans. Remember, you’re not boring or unreliable, you’re unwell, so don’t worry about people who only want your friendship when it’s convenient. And look out for support organisations like Livewire, an online community for teens living with illness. party. Critics accuse him of making a show of supporting gay rights, but being weak when it comes to taking action.
Why is this issue taking so damn long to sort?
The current government’s stance on the matter is to allow the public to cast their vote and the MPs could then choose to go with the results or ignore them, a policy known as a plebiscite. But unfortunately, the notion didn’t pass the Senate in 2016, bringing everything to a screeching halt.
What’s our PM’s stance on this sitch? Malcolm Turnbull is in a bit of an awks position. In the past, he has shown his support for gay rights (he even attends the annual Sydney Mardi Gras), but when he took over as PM after Tony Abbott, he agreed to the plebiscite. Meaning that if he decides he’s all for a vote for same-sex marriage without the plebiscite, he risks losing the support of the conservative side of his

So what about Australia’s Opposition Leader?
Opposition Leader Bill Shorten announced that he’s all for a vote for same-sex marriage as well. “If we get the chance to vote up marriage equality and have a vote on it in the Parliament, a fair dinkum vote, we are absolutely up for that,” Mr Shorten told ABC’s 7.30 program. But will the bill be brought forward? Well, that requires four Liberal MPs to cross the floor. So here’s looking at you, MPs!
What was the point of that emergency meeting held in August?
You might have heard about the PM calling a meeting to discuss the Liberal government’s plans regarding same-sex marriage. The result was to staunchly commit to the plebiscite plan, which seems doomed to fail.

Where are we now?
Knowing that, Mr Turnbull has announced a voluntary postal vote that could commence as soon as September 12, with the votes due back by November 7. The result will be issued on November 25. The Prime Minister has said he wants this resolved by Christmas, but Parliament shuts down on December 8, which only gives a very brief amount of time in which to resolve it. It’s a lengthy process that will cost more than $120 million and the government is not obligated to honour the majority vote, which is why everyone is so frustrated. Therefore, the government holds all the cards and the issue very well may not be resolved in 2017.

MOSTLY COFFINS: Ancient queen from The Mummy People call you an old soul, and you’re often found with your head in a history book or posting throwback photos on Facebook. That’s when you’re not napping for what feels like a thousand years. If someone awakens you from a good snooze, your temper tantrums are out of this world. Rather than wrapping yourself in toilet paper for the mummy effect, try a Cleopatrastyle get-up with zombie makeup. MOSTLY BLACK CATS: Taylor in the Blank Space video You may *seem* nice as pie, but if someone takes more than an hour to text back, your rage is next-level. You also have a thing for cats and leopard coats, which kinda goes with the territory. If you wanna channel scary Swiftie as a scorned (Starbucks) lover, pop on your preppiest outfit and get your crazy eyes on. Golf club optional. MOSTLY DAGGERS: Chanel from Scream Queens Scheming is your fave pastime and you tend to get everything you want in life (even if your loyal squad has to do the dirty work for you). Like you always say, when the going gets tough, the tough go shopping and leave the minions to fix it. Whether you go for her season one or season two look, Chanel is the perfect costume choice because she’s a classic and so are you. MOSTLY FANGS: Mera from Aquaman You adore the mermaid trend and plan on spending your spring in and around large bodies of water. Sure, the movie hasn’t come out yet, but the glimpses we’ve seen of Amber Heard as Aquaman’s bae online are all the #costumegoals. They sell green body paint at novelty shops, right?

BOARD BABES
Ever wondered what it takes to be an x-treme sports athlete at the top of your game? We met snowboarder Zahra Kell and skateboarder Poppy Starr to get the lowdown.
Zahra Kell, 14, S n ow bo a rd e r WHAT’S AN AVERAGE DAY LIKE FOR YOU? I wake up at 6am and go to the gym. After that I head up to the hill to snowboard. Some days I have trampolining or school work after that, but the days I don’t I just hang out with my friends. WHEN DID YOU START SNOWBOARDING? I started when I was four years old, when Mum and Dad took me on a family snow trip. WHEN DID YOU REALISE THIS WAS SOMETHING YOU WANTED TO DO PROFESSIONALLY? A couple of years ago I found that I was always wanting to be on the snow, and I also just really enjoyed competition days. WHO IS YOUR PRO HERO? I’ve always loved Torah Bright. She is such an inspiration and a nice person.
HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR COMPETITIONS? I try to ride the same park as the competition is on for as many days as I can leading in, to get really comfortable with the rails and jumps that are in the comp. I try to only practise the tricks I’m going to throw in the competition. WHAT’S THE COOLEST PART ABOUT YOUR JOB? Travelling is definitely the coolest experience you get when you snowboard professionally. I have been lucky to travel to, and ride at, some of the most beautiful places. WHAT IS THE HARDEST PART? Training in tough conditions. Also, injuries are tough to overcome because you have to get all your tricks back after having a long break. WHAT’S YOUR PROUDEST CAREER MOMENT SO FAR? In my first competition against international professional riders, I ended up in the top eight and I definitely wasn’t expecting that. Also, the Burton Australian Junior Series, when I won the slopestyle and halfpipe. WHAT IS THE TOP GOAL YOU WOULD LIKE TO ACHIEVE? I would like to be an Olympic gold medallist in slopestyle. WHAT DO YOU DO FOR FUN WHEN YOU’RE NOT COMPETING OR TRAINING? I wakeboard, but when I’m not doing board sports I’m playing other sports such as soccer and oztag. WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO SAY TO GF READERS WHO ASPIRE TO HAVE A CAREER LIKE YOURS? Never give up and have as much fun as possible on the way!

WHEN DID YOU START SKATING? When I was eight, that’s when I picked up my first skateboard. A family friend gave me a try of his old skateboard, and he saw that I liked it so much he gave it to me. WHEN DID YOU REALISE THIS WAS SOMETHING YOU WANTED TO DO PROFESSIONALLY? Probably when I was like 12, when I went in my first ever World Cup and I just saw so many other girls. I realised I don’t just love skateboarding, I love everything that comes with it. That’s when I started wanting to be a professional, so I could do it more. WHO IS YOUR PRO HERO? I love Mimi Knoop. I always looked up to her. I remember the first time seeing her, I was so excited. She’s really nice and she supports all the girls.
HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR COMPETITIONS? I don’t do too much, actually. I usually try to go to bed fairly early and have a good breakfast and do lots of stretches before I skate. WHAT’S THE COOLEST PART ABOUT YOUR JOB? I think travelling, and just skating with all my friends and having so much fun in competitions. WHAT IS THE HARDEST PART? Probably frustration in competitions when I don’t do so well. Often in the lead up, you can land all these tricks that you do every time, and then sometimes you just fall off something that you can do every try in practice.

group of boys from my class (including my crush) crossing the floor I was on to get to the level above. None of them had seen me yet, so I decided to freeze, face the other way and hope they would walk past without seeing me. Just at that moment, Mum yelled out really loudly: “Sweetie, time to buy your bras so we can leave.” And all the boys turned around! To make matters worse, one of the boys posted a photo on Snapchat of me with two frilly bras under my arms!
I was at a school camp and we were doing tubing, and me and my friend were wearing the same tie-up togs. We both got onto the tube, having a great time, when next minute my bikini bottom flew off and I was on the tube naked while the whole grade was on the beach witnessing it! I jumped into the water to discover my bottoms were gone, and I had to go into the boat and back to shore naked while my friend couldn’t stop laughing. Note to self – make sure you tie the knots tight!

Pushing the friendship There’s this guy at school that I’m really good friends with and he has another guy that looks just like him in the grade below us. One day, I was walking down some stairs and I thought that my friend was in front of me, so I gave him a friendly push. It turns out that it wasn’t my friend, it was his lookalike! To make things worse, I said that someone behind me had pushed me into him, but when I looked behind me there was no-one there!
Point made One night during a debate, my
Chatup line I had a crush on this boy, and my friends kept telling me to ask him out. So one night I decided I would ask him the next day at school. I told my friends on what I thought was our Instagram group chat, but instead it was the hangouts group chat, which he was on... And he was the first to reply with, “Okay”. I will never live that down!
teammates and I were quietly discussing rebuttal points while the opposition were speaking. Suddenly, I’d come up with some fantastic points and I shouted: “YES, YES, YES!” I then highfived my teammates, soon to notice that the person speaking at the time had gone quiet and everyone was looking at me, including the adjudicator. Obviously I apologised later, but I was so, so utterly embarrassed.
Flash dive
I was at the school pool with all my friends and we were jumping off the three-metre diving board. I did a dive, even though everyone else was too scared (including my crush). I dove and as I swam up and out of the water, I noticed my crush by the edge of the pool looking at me funny. I looked down and realised that when I dove, my bathers had twisted sideways and my boob was showing! I quickly fixed it, but I was so embarrassed!

Prank gone wrong I was at my friend’s party and my best friend told me she was going to the bathroom. Just as she left, I gathered the other girls and said we were all going to prank her by twerking when she opened the door. They didn’t know what twerking was, so I was explaining it to them like: “You bounce your bum up and down!” We heard the door open, so I started twerking. But my friends didn’t, so I yelled: “Come on! Bounce that booty!” They told me to turn around. It was my bestie’s mum about to tell us to go to sleep! Most embarrassing sleepover ever!!

sex & body
My boyfriend and I have started having sex. He is really enjoying it, and I pretend to, but I’m not. We’re using condoms, but it kind of hurts and rubs a lot when he thrusts, and each time I’ve been sore after (we've done it three times). What should I do? I’m worried it's not normal to feel this way. Will it always hurt like this? Skin woes
I’m having some problems with my acne. It's really sore and red, and I can't use cream to make it go down. My skin is also sensitive and has eczema. I haven't got the money to do anything on my own and I don't know if I’ve infected it. Fed up The combination of eczema and acne can require different treatment to acne alone, as some acne treatments may irritate sensitive skin. The best thing is to see a GP. It may be time for oral antibiotics, and these require a prescription. I hear your concerns about money, but do you have a trusted adult who can help you access a doctor that will bulk bill? If so, the advice won't cost you, but you will need your Medicare number – and prescription medication will cost money. Seen too much
My dad has been watching porn videos and pictures. I know this because it is in his phone's Google history. My mum doesn't know. I don't feel like telling anyone and I don't know what to do. Help! Yikes We are impressed, you have shown great courage to write to GF. Adults occasionally do things in private that would surprise or shock young people. Assuming this is not child pornography (which is illegal), you have three choices. First, go with your first instinct and do nothing. Second, find a quiet moment and tell him exactly what you found and how it’s left you feeling. Third, if this continues to worry you, you don’t have to deal with it alone – you can anonymously ring Kids Helpline on 1800 55 1800 and talk it over, or use their online web chat counselling service at kidshelpline.com.au/teens/ get-help/webchat-counselling/

family & friends MISSING MATES
Lately, I've been having a really hard time at school. My best friend and I were really close, but then one of our friends started pulling her away from me and I had a big fight with her because I felt left out and upset. She didn't show any respect, just defended our friend. We haven't been talking because I don't want to fight or cause more drama. All my friends have a bestie, but I don't have a close friend at the moment and mostly sit alone at school. How do I deal with this situation? Lonely
Secret snaps
My bestie has been dating this guy for about 10 months and we are all really close and talk out of school on Snapchat. Recently, while talking to her boyfriend, he asked me for nudes. After finally giving in, I sent him a picture of my breasts. We now talk every day, sending each other pictures, and talk about sex with each other. Other than our Snapchat relationship, nothing physical is happening and my best friend is completely clueless as to what we are doing. Is this a bad thing? Sneaky Yes, this is a bad thing, on two levels. On no planet that I know of is it OK for you to be sending nude selfies to your bestie’s boyfriend. How would you feel if she did this to you? Putting aside the morality of going behind your bestie’s back, both of you are actually in breach of the law. He has solicited child pornography and you have manufactured and distributed it. Apart from the reputational damage, you could be facing heavy penalties. This is not harmless fun, you could end up stuffing up your futures.
Bae not OK
PHOTOGRAPHY GETTY IMAGES DISCLAIMER INFORMATION ON THIS PAGE IS NOT INTENDED TO REPLACE A VISIT TO YOUR GP FOR ANY MEDICAL CONCERN. THE AGE OF CONSENT IS 16 YEARS OLD (17 IN SA AND TAS). IF YOU OR YOUR PARTNER IS OVER 16, AND THE OTHER ISN’T AT LEAST 16, SEX IS ILLEGAL.
Relationships at your age can be very unstable, causing the sort of heartbreak you have described. I think that you have two options here. The first one is to initiate a conversation with your friend and see if you can resolve the conflict. Everyone makes mistakes, so if she owns up to this – good job. However, if you don’t have the energy to do this, walk away for now and make some new friends. Join a club inside and/or outside school – it could be art, music, dance, drama or sport. Then, spend time with the other members and gradually you’ll get a new group of friends that you can hang out with.
“SEND NUDES” First thing to do when someone
I am 13 and I was secretly dating a guy who is 21, but was 20 at the time. I didn’t love him at first, but now I really miss him. Once my mum saw us, my parents told him that if he communicates with me they will call the police on him. I really love him and would do anything to get him back. How can I get him back – or can I? Longing This is tough, but your parents are right. You shouldn’t get him back. If he loves you and has your best interests at heart, he will wait until you are legally old enough to make adult decisions. Despite what you think or feel, legally you are a minor. The law says feeling mature is not good enough. You have to be mature in reality. Caring for him means having nothing to do with him until you are of age. He needs to stay away. If he doesn’t, he could end up in prison.
asks you that? Back away from your phone. In Australia, if you’re under the age of 18, the soliciting or exchange of nude photographs or videos is illegal. If found guilty, you risk charges of child abuse and could be added to a sex offender register. Heavy, we know, but the laws are in place to protect you. If someone is pressuring you, tell a trusted adult. For more information, visit esafety.gov.au and check out the section on sexting.

Get caught up on what’s down there.
hether you’re an experienced explorer or it’s unchartered territory, we’ve all got one. Yep, the vagina is what unites all us gals, and while everyone’s may look a little different, they serve the same very important purposes. So it’s high time you got to know yours!
All the bells and whistles
Labia majora
The vagina is made up of several parts. If you’re game enough, grab a small mirror and take a squiz! Promise it’s not weird – this is actually a great way to become familiar with all your bits and pieces.
These are the outer lips – the fleshier ones that your pubic hair grows on.
Labia minora
The inner lips are smaller, pink skin folds that act like a second layer of protection for your vaginal openings. They contain oil glands that create lubrication, or that “wet” feeling you get down below. Sometimes they might be different sizes or even come out past the outer lips – this is totally normal. Don’t freak out if yours isn’t all symmetrical!
Clitoris
Situated at the top of your vagina, where the lips or your labia minora meet, this area is a pleasure centre for us girls, as it contains about 8000 nerve endings and is highly sensitive. Stimulating this area can lead to an orgasm for many women. If you’ve got your mirror out, you’ll see a little hood hanging over the clitoris to protect it from irritation.
Vulva
This is the name given to the inner and outer lips of the vagina, so basically what you see at first glance.

GF feels
Ew, what just came out of me? Vaginal discharge is a really normal, and sometimes gross, part of being a girl. As if we didn’t have enough to deal with already! The fluid that comes out of your vagina changes throughout your cycle, so here’s what to keep an eye out for.
Thick and white: this creamy
Te n d in g y o u r lady garden Treat your vagina kindly. If you shave or wax, do so carefully – the skin around the area is really sensitive and hair follicles can easily become inflamed or infected. Exfoliate gently if you need to, but remember those products are only suitable for external use, so less is more. Soap can irritate the vagina and upset its delicate pH balance, and medical professionals recommend you wash yourself with good oldfashioned water! Among other clever features of the vagina, it’s self-cleaning, so you don’t need to lather up with fancy products.
fluid can appear at the start and end of your cycle.
Clear and stretchy: this “egg white”-like discharge occurs around ovulation (the release of your egg from the fallopian tube), usually around the middle of your cycle. Watery: this can occur at any point within your cycle and might increase after exercise.
Red or brown: sometimes around
ovulation you might have spotting, or just after your period you might see a bit of “old blood” coming out.
Urethra
You may have learned at school that girls have “three holes”. One of them is your bum (or “anus” if you’re being all scientific), and this tiny hole, located under the clitoris, is another. It’s where urine comes out.
WORDS ROSIE JONES ILLUSTRATIONS GF ARCHIVE
Vaginal passage
This is our third “hole”, but don’t think you’re just walking around with an open tube between your legs! The walls of this passage are made up of muscles that contract, or close up, when at rest. The vaginal passage is a multi-tasker: it’s where our period blood flows through on its way out of the uterus; it’s where we put tampons in to catch that blood; it’s where vaginal intercourse occurs; and it’s also called the birth canal because it’s where babies come out of. Yep, the walls can stretch THAT far. Which is amazing and kinda crazy at the same time!
Downstairs warning signs Even if you’re not sexually active, your vagina can still develop different infections or conditions, so it’s important to keep an eye on it to spot anything abnormal. If you notice any of the below symptoms, especially if they’re not going away, have a chat to your GP. Don’t be shy… they’ve heard it all before!

ccording to science, trading saliva is one way to figure out if someone is a good fit for you. It’s pretty weird when you really think about it, but there’s no denying that a good kiss is pure magic. There’s so much focus and pressure on the first kiss that it’s normal to have no idea what’s actually going on after it happens. Sometimes you can get caught up in all the anticipation and imagining what it will be like that you aren’t prepared for what comes next.
We kissed… does this mean we’re dating?
Not exactly. It could mean that, but until you have the chat that makes it offish, it’s just a kiss. If you want to take it to that next level, make sure they know you’re keen. They kissed you too, so unless the sparks didn’t fly for them, there’s a huge chance they’re into you.
We kissed and I haven’t heard from them since.
Have you messaged or tried calling them? If not, then there is no reason why you shouldn’t have the confidence to hit them up with a cute text. If so, then babe, you’ve dodged a bullet. If someone had their tongue down your throat one night and then ignores you the next, they don’t deserve your attention.
We kissed, so does this mean we have to go further?
Absolutely not. You don’t have to do anything you’re not comfortable with. You also don’t have to kiss again until you feel like it, or at all. Your mouth – your body – your decision. The same goes for them, so if they don’t want to take it further, you need to respect that.
We kissed because it was a dare, but I want to kiss them again.
So many people have their first ever kiss thanks to spin the bottle and truth or dare! If that’s what happened to you and you enjoyed it, and you feel like your partner did as well, then there is no harm in sending a cheeky text telling them you had a good time. See what happens from there!
We kissed and he’s really into me, but I just ain’t feeling it.
Kissing can be the most amazing thing ever, or it can totally turn you off someone. If you’ve spent countless hours imagining what it would be like to kiss Cole Sprouse (isn’t that how we all spend our spare time?) and then it happens and it’s not what you imagined, your feelings can disappear instantly. Although tbh, as if Cole would be a bad kisser!
We kissed and it was bad… is this really what kissing is like?
People have different styles of kissing and may not be great at first, but will get better with practice. If you don’t want to kiss that person again, then you also probably aren’t into them. There will come a time and a person that you enjoy kissing.
We kissed, everyone is talking about it and I’m embarrassed.
Don’t be! Kissing is very normal, and if people are talking about it, it’s because it’s juicy gossip. They’re probably jealous! Own it and remember that next week everyone will be gossiping about something else.
DID YOU KNOW Kissing releases endorphins and oxytocin, which makes you feel happy and less stressed! French kissing uses all 34 of the muscles in your face. The French didn’t invent kissing – British soldiers called
it ‘French kissing’ after seeing how passionately the French people would kiss. Cows, puffins, squirrels and even snails also kiss, but it looks more like awkward face touching. Chimpanzees are the only animals

whose kiss resembles a human kiss. The kiss symbol ‘X’ is from the Middle Ages when many people couldn’t read or write. Peasants would write ‘X’ instead of a signature and then they would kiss the document.

GF feels Scrappy
SKINNY JEANS
“I’ve been self-conscious about being scrawny since I was a kid and my uncle gave me the nickname ‘Scrappy’ after the character from Scooby-Doo. I’ve always been tall and skinny, and no matter what I eat or how much sport I play, I still have the same body. If I wear tighter clothing, then I look ridiculous, but baggy clothing accentuates it as well. Summer is the worst because guys are all wearing sleeveless tees and I try to wear long-sleeve tees, or like a thin bomber jacket, so my arms aren’t showing. Everyone’s always saying, ‘Aren’t you hot in that?’ It’s the worst. Jackets are the only thing I feel alright in. I’m also heaps self-conscious at the beach and at pool parties. I’ve always felt like everyone is looking at me thinking about how scrawny I am. I don’t care about strangers, but I mean my friends and people I know. Although something happened quite recently that really surprised me. A whole bunch of us were playing soccer and, when any of the guys scored a goal, he would lift up his shirt and run around celebrating. I knew I’d just draw attention to myself even more if I didn’t do it, so I just did it really quickly. Then one of the girls who was watching told me I had good abs. I was on top of the world. No-one has ever said something nice about my body. It felt really good.” – Ryan, 16.
Shorty
WORDS BREE PLAYER PHOTOGRAPHY GETTY IMAGES
“I’m only 170 centimetres, which is really short for a guy. I’m basically the shortest guy in my grade and even half the girls tower above me. I feel like I look like their younger brother when I stand next to them. Also, when you ask every girl what sort of guy they like, they always say ‘tall’. I’d seriously give anything to be tall. And the worst part is there’s nothing I can do about
Celebs get real about body image Even the people you think have all the confidence in the world still have insecurities.
“I only ever wear tight black jeans, and I’ve been wearing the same pair for three years. It’s coz I’m really self-conscious of my thighs because they’re pretty thick. I also have wide hips and I hate them. I wear long shirts and am forever pulling them down to make sure my hips are covered. I feel like whenever I wear other jeans or pants it shows how thick my thighs are. I actually think
My ‘little’ guy
JUST BANTER
“I’ve always been a bigger guy from when I was a kid. When I was in primary school, my mum would say it was puppy fat and I’d grow out of it, but that didn’t happen. I’m heaps tall as well, so people comment on me being ‘big’, like just out in public and stuff. I have heaps of mates and they say things about me being fat. They call me ‘Biggie’ like the rapper. I hate it, but feel like I have to go along with it. When guys tease each other, it can get savage. You can’t say anything coz it’s just ‘banter’ and they do it to everyone. It really can get to you though.” – Aaron, 17. it. I was always hoping I’d have a massive growth spurt, but my dad is also really short, so I sort of knew that was unlikely. I feel like people don’t take me seriously because of my height. You’ve heard of ‘small man syndrome’, right? Well it’s definitely a thing. I’m always trying to prove that I’m tough at rugby and I’ve also recently started boxing as well. That’s given me a little bit more confidence because being short is OK for boxing.” – Usman, 18.
Robert Pattinson: “I don’t have
Chris Pratt: “I do know what it feels like to eat emotionally, and to be sad and make yourself happy with food. And then to be almost immediately sad again and now ashamed and then to try to hide those feelings with more food.” 59
“I can speak from experience when I tell you that there is nothing more humiliating for a guy than having a small penis. I first realised mine is small when I was in the change rooms after footy in Year 8 and noticed all the other guys were bigger than me. I immediately felt ashamed and like there was something wrong with me. I thought maybe I hadn’t hit puberty or something and hoped it would happen for me soon. I did get a little bit bigger, but so did everyone else. Now I’m 20, and it’s still very much on the smaller scale. I’ve spent most of my life getting changed really quickly so no-one would see, and I actually get too nervous to pee when there are other guys in a public toilet. I have to go into the cubicle. I know my friends think it’s weird. I recently lost my virginity and was very anxious about it. For me, having sex wasn’t something I was excited to do. I wanted to, but I have to admit I was worried I wouldn’t be able to do it properly. I’m relieved that I can, but I can’t say I enjoyed it, because I was stressing the entire time.” – Jamie, 20.
Daniel Radcliffe: “I used to be very self-conscious about my height, but then I thought, ‘f*** that, I’m Harry Potter.’”

about it every time I have to go anywhere. I had my formal last year and didn’t feel comfortable in suit pants, so I ended up wearing my jeans with a shirt and a suit jacket, even though my mum complained about it. She doesn’t get it though and I don’t want to admit I’m selfconscious about my hips and thighs because it doesn’t seem like a very manly thing to do.” – Cameron, 16.

cool jo b s YOU NEVER KNEW EXISTED It’s a huge deal to choose what you wanna be when you grow up, but did you ever consider that the most interesting jobs might be ones you’ve never heard of?
RIDE STYLIST, WALT DISNEY THEME PARKS What if your job was to create the sick rides at Disneyland? If you literally got to dream up roller-coasters themed to your favourite Disney films? Well that’s exactly what Stef Harbuck gets to do.
“My job is an ‘Imagineer’ or producer for Walt Disney Imagineering. I help bring theme park attractions and experiences to life. I studied at college in the areas of interactive design and production, computer animation production, theatre production, studio art, art history and computer science. Walt Disney Imagineering is one of the few places where I can use all of those things! Every day is different – depending on the phase of the project, a typical day might be working with writers, artists, technical directors, engineers, editors and designers, talking through ideas and problems to solve on a project or putting together a concept for a brand new project. It might be going to one of the theme parks for an overnight test in the wee hours of the morning and then heading to the Disney Studios for a creative review with filmmakers. It might be running a playtest, collecting feedback

from first-time guests, giving presentations, and riding a ride up to 20 times in a day! There are so many things I love about my job. I’ve been fortunate enough to live for short periods of time in Tokyo and Germany, I crossed the Atlantic on a new cruise ship and lived on it while it was still under construction. I love that I get to walk through Disneyland at sunrise when it’s completely still and quiet. Recently, I was working with the cast and crew of Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 in Atlanta to shoot footage to bring our attraction to life. It was so rewarding to ride our ride with the film director James Gunn, the cast and crew, and to hear them scream, clap and cheer and say how awesome our attraction is going to be. It’s very special to watch a family who seem hot, tired and grumpy become transformed into smiling, energetic, child-like guests after riding through the attraction I helped build.”

PLAYLIST EDITOR,
my headphones and get lost in a world of discovery – scanning new releases, artists and brainstorming playlist ideas. My path to this job started with studying Audio Engineering. From there I worked across print, radio and TV, which gave me in-depth music industry experience and entrenched me in the local music scene. Spotify is a seriously cool place to work. There are so many awesome things that I’ve experienced in my time here, but the one that stands out the most was the time Justin Timberlake played at our Spotify party in Sweden! I pull from an incredibly diverse and vibrant musical landscape, from indie, hip-hop and electronic to pop and singer-songwriter. I am obsessed with Lorde’s new music right now. We have a large global network of more than 80 editors in over 25 regions across the globe. It is pretty exciting and inspiring to be able to share songs and new artists with one another. I love that I can play a part in supporting and nurturing local artists, and help connect those artists to their fans through our playlist portfolio.”

CRUISE DIRECTOR, ROYAL CARIBBEAN CRUISES
INTERVIEWS & WORDS BREE PLAYER
Wouldn’t it be nice if your job was like being on a permanent holiday? Where your main task was to make sure everyone was having fun? Well that’s what Rob McNally does aboard one of Royal Caribbean’s cruise ships. “My official title is Cruise Director aboard Royal Caribbean’s Explorer Of The Seas cruise ship. In this job, I have been lucky enough to travel the world to amazing destinations all over Australia, Europe, USA, Canada and Mexico, as well as the gorgeous islands of the South Pacific. I’m responsible for arranging a huge variety of entertainment for our guests, such as ice show spectaculars in our iceskating rink, musicals and stand-up comedy in the theatre, dress-up parties, theme nights, trivia, ballroom dancing lessons, pool competitions, craft classes, game shows, karaoke and sport events – it’s pretty much round the clock, non-stop fun!
One of the cool things about this job is that each day is different. I host a wide range of activities and events, mingle with our lovely guests and I host shows in our beautiful Palace Theatre, which features spectacular Broadwaystyle shows each night. I do love performing and making people laugh. I know I’ve done a great job when the whole audience has the giggles. I also dream up future cruises and creative events with the rest of the team – which can lead to some pretty crazy ideas! To get into this industry, I started out working in a holiday camp in England, where I hosted a variety of trivia, game shows and events as the Entertainment Manager. I then decided to try the same job on a cruise ship and now here I am, a Cruise Director for Royal Caribbean – one of the coolest jobs in the world! The most rewarding part for me is getting involved in a variety of fun events and putting smiles on people’s faces, all while travelling the world and meeting people from loads of different countries.”

NAIL POLISH NAMER, OPI
Have you ever looked at the bottom of your nail polish, LOL’ed and thought, ‘Who the heck comes up with these sassy names?’ Well at OPI, the main person responsible is actually the co-founder, Suzi Weiss-Fischmann. “I create all of the shades first and then hues are named twice a year, during an all-day meeting at OPI’s North Hollywood headquarters. Six of us come up with the clever names. It takes up to eight hours to name 12 different shades. We start with the geographic location the collection is inspired by and then play on that region. We invite people from marketing, advertising, and we always invite a guest at the company to join us. We eat the authentic food from the area. Usually it’s something unhealthy – it really gets our ideas flowing! Some of the names from our Polish collection are a play on food. ‘Suzi Is Hungary Again’ is one of the most popular. The idea for this name was me around 3pm, asking around the office if anyone had a good snack. Many of the names come from our life experiences. I love polishes with names that tell a story. In 2006, we had a colour called ‘My Chihuahua Bites!’ – a bright orange polish that earned its name because the weekend before I was bit by a Chihuahua! While we don’t take suggestions outside the boardroom, I’ve found over the years that our staff guests have some of the best ideas! The overall process is democratic – we all need to agree on the final name, but we also have fun with it. You can only imagine the names that do not make the cut! We’ve had many good laughs, believe me.”

Rahnee Bransby
We could watch bae’s tutorials and scroll her Insta allll day. What’s your makeup MVP? Definitely concealer! I could never go a day without it. It’s perfect just to hide a little blemish or my super-dark under eyes.
Natalie Roser The gorge model has her own clothing brand, Roser the Label. If you could raid a celeb’s makeup bag, it would be… Rosie HuntingtonWhiteley. Her little Instagram story makeup tutorials have me wanting everything in her kit. What’s the best beauty advice you ever received? Hydration is key! Drinking plenty of water and a good moisturiser will make a world of difference to your skin.
PHOTOGRAPHY INSTAGRAM & SUPPLIED
Your never-fail Insta filter? A touch of Aden and the sharpen tool. Is there a beauty look you tried in the past that makes you cringe these days? I used to pull my hair back into a ponytail and then pull out two thick strands at the front that just hung around my face randomly... don’t know why that beauty look was so popular!
Top beauty trend for formal season? Fresh, dewy skin! Don’t go too crazy on the foundation. It looks so beautiful when there is a light base and it’s super fresh – it makes you look so healthy.
Makeup trend you’re ready to see die? Makeup is just fun, there is no wrong or right! Do what looks best for you, but personally, I’m not a fan of super-intense powdery highlight. Top tip for aspiring vloggers? Get an incredible vlogging camera because it’ll make your vlogs look amazing. I use the Sony A5100 and it’s my little baby... it also takes amazing Insta pics.
Samantha Harris Sam’s been kicking beauty goals since she was discovered in the Girlfriend Model Search at 13! Top tip for glowing skin? Lots of sleep, water during the day and always make sure you remove all traces of makeup before going to bed. It’s important you stick to a daily routine and never stray from it. What’s your makeup MVP? I love a highlighter – at the moment I am using a Nude By Nature highlighter stick in rose gold. I can’t live without it. Who’s got the strongest beauty game right now? Emma Watson. She’s a classic beauty who keeps it very natural. What’s the best beauty advice you ever received? Less is more in the makeup department – let your natural beauty shine through.

THE SHADOWHUNTERS MEGA BABE TALKED TO US ABOUT SEASON THREE, ON SCREEN ~ROMANCE~ AND TEXTING TAYLOR SWIFT. GF: Your show’s been confirmed for a third season. Can you tell us some spoilers? I know absolutely nothing! I just have inklings based on where we leave things at the end of season two, and a fairly rough guide from the books as well. But really, I have no idea what’s in store for season three. The only thing I’ve heard is that I’m going to be working with some of the other actors and some of the newer actors a lot more. GF: What’s going on with Jace and Clary? Surely a relationship is coming… right? Not in the conventional sense, no. Clary and Jace definitely have some hardships to work through and their feelings are more exposed than ever before. They’re both now aware of their affection for each other. Jace’s feelings always have been there, but Clary’s are as well now and she has to come to terms with them. We’ll see bits of romance. Bits, but that’s all we’re going to get for now.

Season two arrives just in time for Halloween, and holy demogorgons are we excited! Netflix is being pretty tight-lipped about what’s in store, but it’s been revealed that Will Byers will be the main character this time around. The creators have also promised it will be bigger and darker than the first series and that our fave Millie Bobby Brown will be back to play Eleven. Here for it. AVAILABLE OCTOBER 27 ON NETFLIX.

GF: We first saw you in Taylor Swift’s ‘Style’ video. How did that happen? I was just sitting in my apartment and Taylor texted me – we’d been friends for a few years – and she said: ‘Hey, would you ever be interested in doing a music video?’ And I said: ‘Yeah, well maybe – it depends who it would be for.’ When she said it was for her, I was so excited, I messaged back immediately: ‘When can I be there? I’ll be there now if you want me there now!’ GF: What was the video shoot like? It was incredible. It was like being a spy – I had to do everything in secret and I wasn’t allowed to tell people what I was doing or where I was going, or the name of it. The credit goes to Taylor for just thinking of all this stuff. Where does she come up with it all? She’s just an amazingly talented woman, and I feel very blessed to have been a part of it. WE CAUGHT UP WITH OVERNIGHT SENSATION AND ABSOLUTE SWEETHEART, MAGGIE LINDEMANN.
HOW WERE YOU DISCOVERED? Through social media! I uploaded a video of myself on Keek and then my now manager contacted me. Next minute, I was flying out to LA. WHAT DOES YOUR HIT SONG PRETTY GIRL MEAN TO YOU? It means that I’m more than what people see on the outside and I’m more than my Instagram. It’s my way of telling people that you don’t know me based on what you just see. TELL US SOMEONE YOU HAVE BEEN STARSTRUCK BY Definitely Rihanna. I have never been so in awe of someone. She was just so beautiful, so flawless. WHO ELSE DO YOU LOOK UP TO? I am obsessed with Lana Del Ray. I haven’t stopped listening to her new album.
LAST YEAR, YOU BRAVELY CAME OUT AS BISEXUAL ON PERISCOPE. WHAT WAS THAT LIKE? It was a very weird feeling. I was crying, but I wasn’t sad. I wasn’t happy either. A lot of people have said that I was faking my reaction and I was too over the top, but that’s not true. I was just so overwhelmed by feelings. But I also had a super-positive reaction from my fans and my friends. Also, my family is very religious, so that was scary for me. I didn’t know if I was going to lose people over it. But the overwhelming response was so positive and accepting and I’m glad that I did it. WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU? I’ve been in the studio a lot lately, just working a lot. There’s more coming soon!

Part two of your album Night & Day is out V soon. Are your songs written from personal experience? Definitely! A lot has happened in our lives in terms of relationships with girls and family issues, and we’ve also had some great nights out all over the world, so we’ve put that energy and those emotions into our songs.
back in town
What was it like to tour with Sabrina Carpenter? She was awesome! We met her ages ago and then she started blowing up, so we asked her to come on tour with us. She’s really fun; we had her birthday on tour so we celebrated together and she puts on a great live show.
What’s your most embarro on-stage experience? Fortunately I’ve never tripped, touch wood, but Connor fell over while we were playing for Taylor Swift in front of 20,000 people; it was very embarrassing for him.
What are your pre-show rituals? We rub our chins together to get some friction going on. It looks like we’re making out but we’re not… yet!
If you guys had gone to high school together, do you reckon you would’ve been mates? Definitely! James probably wouldn’t have liked me, though, because he’s very focused on his studies and I was not. But me, Brad and Connor would’ve been friends and James would’ve hated all of us [laughs].
Whatever works for you! How do you guys keep fit on tour? We bring our own gym equipment so we’ll have a dressing room called ‘muscle beach’ and we’ll work out in there.
What do you love about Australia? It’s one of my favourite places, not even joking! I love the sun and everyone’s happy and they speak the same as us English people, like they get sarcasm and they say ‘mate’. It’s really cool and we love it.
What are your essentials? I bring my production gear. Brad always has his Tom Ford aftershave, which is handy. James always has everything ready coz he’s organised and Connor always has hairspray.

Who inspires you creatively? Arctic Monkeys, Taylor Swift and a lot of country music like Rascal Flatts. Very weird mix!
How has your relationship with the guys evolved over the years? It’s more personal now; we’re literally like brothers. We know each other very, very well. We know when we need our personal time and we know when we need to make each other laugh, which we do quite a lot.

he may have burst onto the scene with partypop anthems ‘Fancy’ (with Iggy Azaela) and ‘I Love it’ (with Icona Pop), but don’t mistake Charli XCX for your average cookie-cutter pop princess, coz this Brit babe is so much more. Following the goth-pop stylings of albums True Romance and Sucker, Charli rocked the music world earlier this year when she dropped a totally different sound in Number 1 Angel – a rebellious mixtape that proved she can nail any genre she takes on. Now, in what’s set to be the girl gang tour of 2017, the 24-year-old will join Sia’s Nostalgic For The Present line-up alongside MØ and Amy Shark, which will see the squad play two major shows in Oz. And what a straightfire gig that’s gonna be – all the tickets pls! We sat down with the starlet to chat about all things music, life advice and uh, ghosts…
Hey Charli! We’re so excited you’re coming out for these shows. It’s like the ultimate girl power line-up! How did that come about? Sia basically asked me if I wanted to open the shows for her, and obviously I said yes. She’s such an amazing artist! I also know MØ, so it was basically my dream line-up!
So, tell us – what we can expect from your performances? A bunch of new songs! It’s been a while since I’ve been in Australia too, so I wanna do something special – I like to have a party when I play! Your third studio album is on its way. What’s been inspiring you? I get inspired by the people I’m around – it triggers me to be creative. Like right now, we’re out in the middle of nowhere writing songs in the UK countryside and it feels pretty good! Apparently this house is haunted too…
Creepy! Have you had any ghostly encounters? My friend who’s staying here had a dream on the first night that she was shot and fell through a window and was covered in glass. Anyway, the next day the owner told us that years ago a man had tried to shoot his wife here – and he was a window cleaner!

You’re so confident with your identity and a big advocate for female empowerment. What advice would you give GF readers figuring all that out? You have so much time to live your life – don’t focus on mean things people might say. Surround yourself with people who love you, and if you have faults or flaws, embrace it! Perfect is crazy, imperfect is amazing.

GF’S AFTER PARTY GUIDE
Ain’t nobody got time for setbacks at your afters! Here’s how to ditch the dramz and focus on the fun. Party poison
Let’s be real, whether you’re under or over the legal drinking age (which is 18 BTW), it’s possible that someone may bring alcohol to the party. But just coz other peeps are drinking doesn’t mean you’re obligated to join in! Trust us, you do not want to make a total fool out of yourself and be captured on everyone’s Snapchats. Our suggestion? Grab a cup of your go-to fizzy drink and dance the night away.
WORDS MATTHEW GALEA PHOTOGRAPHY GETTY IMAGES
After the after party
How will you get home when you’re partied out? If you’re thinking, ‘eh, I’ll just wing it’, then think again! Before the night, arrange for either yours or a friend’s parents to pick you up, or consider getting a taxi/uber. Never, ever get in the car with anyone who’s even had one drink. Not only are you seriously risking your own life, but you’re also risking other lives as well. Make a smart plan ahead of time so you don’t need to stress later.
One One less less problem problem What to do when things aren’t going right.
DRAMZ #1: Your friend wants to get drunk and you don’t. You can’t force your friend to do anything, but it’s important to tell her how you feel. Sit her down prior to the party and say you’re not comfortable with her drinking. If she pushes you to drink too, it’s worth considering whether this is someone you want to be hanging out with. DRAMZ #2: Your friend drank too much and is throwing up. So even though you warned her not to, she drank anyway and now she’s sick. Even if you’re mad as hell, it’s important that you look after your friend! Get her some water, take her to the bathroom and make sure she isn’t left alone, then call her parents to come and pick her up. Don’t feel like you’re being a buzzkill, it’s for her safety!
‘Break The Rules’ Charli XCX ‘New Romantics’ Taylor Swift ‘Bad For Me’ In Stereo ‘Back To You’ Louis Tomlinson ft. Bebe Rexha ‘Sorry Not Sorry’ Demi Lovato ‘Homemade Dynamite’ Lorde ‘Don’t Kill My Vibe’ Sigrid ‘New Rules’ Dua Lipa ‘No More Sad Songs’ Little Mix ‘Kiwi’ Harry Styles
DRAMZ #3: A guy wants to hook up with you, but you’re not into it. Ugh! Awks city, population: you (and the guy, obvs). Just coz other people are making out doesn’t mean that you have to. Tell him you just want to spend the night with your squad, then tell your friends to make sure they’re by your side all night. If he keeps pestering you and you feel uncomfortable, let an adult know. That kind of pressure is never okay! DRAMZ #4: There’s no adult supervision. You promised your ‘rents there’d be adults watching over errything, but it’s just people your age. As lame as it sounds, it’s important to have an adult for safety reasons in case someone gets hurt or the police rock up coz the music’s too loud (not to mention you’ll need someone to take the squad pics!). Text your parents – they may be able to come and watch over things (from afar!) or take you to another party that’s supervised.
Asking a girl to
formal…
OK, so you’re no t into guys. But the same rules apply (and it’s just as nerveracking, soz). Remember they’re also supe r-excited for the night. It’ s totally roman tic to be asked to formal by the person yo u like, so if you want THAT girl to be your da te, you’ll probably make her year by doing so.
the foodie guy
Food is the international language of love for, well, everyone… so why not use its deliciousness for your own advantage? Ask them with a cute message on the inside of a pizza box. Or better yet, chicken nuggies. How could they say no?
the sporty guy
the question
f
Ask your crush to formal, coz it’s 2017 and girls run the world.
ormal is just around the corner, and you may have everything meticulously planned down to the exact minute you will apply your false lashes… but one detail that is usually left in the hands of boys is who your date is. Gals, you know who you want to go with. You’ve known for months. So instead of leaving it in the disorganised hands of your crush, it’s time for you to turn up the confidence and ask him to formal. Trust us, he’s going to love the fact that you were a confident
queen, and you’re going to feel like an absolute BOSS for doing it! It’s defs tricky putting yourself out there and admitting that you have the #feels for somebody, but we’re here to help fam (coz we’ve been there.) Here are some fun and totally chill ways to ask your crush to formal...
the romantic guy
If you’re crushing hard on a Jughead type (and let’s be honest, aren’t we all) nothing says romance more than a handwritten letter. It’s also a much easier way to express yourself without all those pesky nerves getting in the way. It doesn’t have to be a 10-page confession of your love, but if you’re more confident putting words onto paper, then write a cute note. Tip: sign it off with a reallife kiss by smooching the paper after applying your fave lippy! Or just give it a spritz with your perfume.
the musical guy
Musicians are creative, so they’ll appreciate any form of originality. You could make them a personalised playlist with formal-related songs that basically ask the question for you! If you know their favourite band or type of music, try keeping it in that genre and they’ll appreciate it even more.
IF THEY SAY NO… Not ideal is putting it mildly. Obviously you will be
crushed, but the best part about formal is hanging out with your squad. Having the perfect date may seem like the most important thing rn, but going with your friends can seriously result in the best night of your life. Spending the night dancing and taking selfies with your tribe will make for the best mems ever. Also, Archie totally turned down Betty and she ain’t mad about it now.

popping
If your crush is into athletics, then use this as an opportunity to be creative with their passions. Football fan? Get a ball and write on it something like: “Let’s tackle formal together.” Throw it their way, and we guarantee they’ll be equally impressed with your skillz and that you’ve taken an interest in their hobbies. #Goals much?

ormal, pfft. Just the most important social event of the year, no biggie... Right now your head’s probably swimming with questions about what colour eyeshadow to wear with your dress that you haven’t bought yet and if that cute guy in science is going to pluck up the courage to ask you (seriously, what is he waiting for?). But don’t stress! We’ve pulled together this one-stop formal guide to help you out in the dress department, give you major makeup inspo AND make sure you slay every second of your night of nights – from finding a date, right through to handling any drama at the afters. But first, because preparation is key and you know I love a good list, here’s a little head’s up about five things that will most likely go down at your formal:
TFW you’re dancing with bae to the perfect song
1
There will be one of those fugly marble backdrops set up in the entranceway for you and your plus-one/besties to take profesh looking photos. If it’s not marble it might be a photo of a red curtain, or even better, a fake night sky with a fake drawbridge #magicalmoments. There will be an awkward teacher presiding over the snack table looking suuuper uncomfortable. Pro tip: have a chat to them as you scoff down the mini burgers – they’ll probably love you for being cool and not avoiding them. Brownie points! A random will be wearing the same dress as someone in your squad and there will be a minor freakout before they get over it and decide to take an all-time twinning selfie. There will be a time near the end of the night when everyone’s dancing to Despacito (lol) and all the groups come together – and it’s actually so fun. A bunch of people will leave really early for the afters and booooo, farewell them. More space on the dancefloor for you.
