CHAPTER ONE A Case for Sustainability At Ringling College of Art and Design
As globalization grows, our world is constantly becoming more aware of human beings’ actions and the consequences of those actions. After having negatively affected our world and environment, now we are realizing that in order to keep this place a livable one, we need to change our ways. There is no way to suddenly make all the plastic that has been produced in the years disappear, but there are ways to prevent creating more in the future. We cannot fix the holes in the Ozone layer in a matter of days, but we now know what we can do to stop it from getting worse. Sustainability deals with properly designing buildings, objects and even our life to not only maximize the resources we put into them but to assure they remain sustainable even after they have served their purpose. Sustainability is an issue of design because objects or whatever we are addressing must be designed to live beyond its use and to positively impact the planet at all stages of its life. Education is one of the most important aspects of anybody’s life. Ringling is a source of education therefore it can have a great effect on the people who go through it. If Ringling is an environmentally aware college, then all of its students, faculty and staff who come to it and go, will also be educated and knowledgeable people on the subject. Once someone is educated about the importance of a matter and begins to care about it, they can change the way others think about it too. It becomes an epidemic of environmentally aware people who make sure that their decisions will not affect the environment and our planet in a negative way but rather ensure that it help it become more sustainable. In the globalization era, we are being pushed to become consumers of things that we do not necessarily need, because we are influenced by a consumerist society. The productions of these things are hurting our environment without us realizing it. We often do not how our action can

put us in a position where there are no more resources left that for us to use. As creative people, Ringling is a place where we can start the change we wish to create. We can start by creating sustainable design for waste management, finding ways to recycle our own products, and creating awareness in the community. For example, the full removal of water bottle use will be a small step that will be significant to the environment. Because of the increase in international communication, we are now able to find out what is being done for the environment in the different parts of the world. We can see what actions are being taken and what sustainable initiatives are being created to plan a better future for the world. For example in Germany double facades are used in translucent cladding seal exteriors in order to increase energy efficiency while admitting natural light. Norway is to build a green energy building in the north of the country that is meant to create more energy than it uses, implementing solar panels and sunscreens on an aluminum façade and heat pumps. There are thousands of examples of green initiatives already put in place and thousands more in the process. It is important for Ringling to stay up to date with these trends around the world if it wishes to be at an international standard level. One of the biggest trends in global sustainability is improving and getting the word out on exactly what sustainability really is. Many companies are starting to see that many Americans do not even know what words like “carbon footprint” and “sustainability” mean. They are now seeing this as a chance to educate the public by defining these words on their own terms to engage customers about this movement. Many are starting to report on their sustainability efforts annually. According to a G&A institute study, that number has more than doubled from 20% to 53% of total companies stating that they do in fact have sustainability plans. This trend is going to continue to grow into the decade. Tap-
ping into consumer preferences and emotions these companies want their customers to give feedback on their sustainability programs in hopes of increasing consumer moral. Schools just like corporate giants are also working on sustainability efforts. NYU has devoted an entire section of their site to sustainability efforts on campus. Among the most interesting ones are Bike Shares, Green Grants and the super cool NYUnplugged, an initiative developed by students that aims to go about normal life using less power. Creating study rooms where students join for study sessions, instead of having each student studying in their dorms and using more power. Residence halls measure their usage and compete with each other to use less energy. The initiative has spread from NYU to a national level, with schools competing with each other to reduce energy usage. NYU has also been able to motivate their students to go green by having Green Grants, which funds ideas and projects from students that may help make NYU truly green. A creative and unique way that Quinnipiac University is becoming more sustainable is that they are providing biodegradable graduation gowns. While it may cost more, each gown saves 23 bottles from the landfill a total of 45,000 bottles are saved each graduation. In massive school like University of California however, they are taking advantage of the student body’s size, by opening a sustainability resource center. Naturally the room is made of all recycled supplies and is solar powered. Students come to the room to work and this allows faculty to work closely with the students. Colorado College hires interns during the summer to work the college garden. The food is then used in the dining hall the next year. They’ve also released a book to students on how to establish an effective garden. These are a handful of ways that some colleges are trying to establish sustainability in different and creative ways.

Sustainability Survey
Bon Fire Reflection
Nazanin Varasteh created a survey consisting of 5 questions sent to the SGA Green Week facebook page, for our class to have an idea of how much the campus was aware of the sustainability committee. The questions featured in the survey were:
On April 1st, 2013 our Strategic Management class held a sustainability Bonfire. The goal was to promote awareness about the Sustainability Committee and facilitate conversations with the students at Ringling about campus sustainability. The turnout was of approximately 70-80 students. We asked "How can we make Ringling More Green?" They received food for their answers.
1. Are you aware of the sustainability committee on Ringling campus? a. Yes b. No 2. How sustainable is Ringling? Scale 1-5 3. What would you be interested in learning about sustainability? Open Answer
20
4. What topics would you be interested in learning about regarding green efforts at the symposium? Open Answer 5. Would you be interested in attending a free event hosted by the Sustainability Committee on the Ringling campus where you will learn more about being “green?”
•Bring a Farmers Market to campus •Solar Panels •More recycling •Permanently fill the potholes in the parking lots

Sustainability Video Synopsis The Sustainability Committee video was created as a resource to educate the Ringling public about the initiatives and goals of the committee. Tim Rummage, Coordinator of environmental studies offered his perspective on his position in the committee. Micheal Volino, Chairmen/ Subcommittee of Recycling, discussed facilities input on how they can provide sustainable practices for the campus. Chris Shaffer, Associate Dean of Students/Student Life Representative explained current sustainable practices on campus. ART Network would like to continue adding interviews to the video as requested. Please contact skambara@c.ringling.edu about interviewing more of the committee. Ecodesign 2013 Posters Our Strategic Planning class went into two teams to create posters to submit to the Ecodesign student competition. Posters selected will be shown at the Ecodesign conference in St. Petersburg. Our class would like for the Sustainability committee to use these posters for any Sustainability promotional uses on campus. Submitted work had to correspond according to these guidelines: “The works should focus on the idea of ecodesign: to re-establish harmonious relationships between people and environment. The goal of the competition is to reveal positive and negative aspects of interaction between human and nature, to explore challenges connected with environment pollution and to discover possible risks threatening sustainable development. Theme of forests and parks may have lots of interpretations, such as protection, preservation, usage, reproduction and others.” –Ecodesign 2013 Webpage Team One Leaf-line Concept Statements “Our concept is about life and existence; the experiences that the living go through. Trees and plants just as well as human beings are living things, and they also go through "life". We are trying to show our concept by creating a connection between people and plants, using plants as the skin of a person, both of which change as they age and go through their lives”
- Nazanin Varasteh
“Stability and existence. We are putting an essential part of a tree into a human form. That way, we can see the connection of life between the tree and a human being. Through this connection, hopefully humans will realize how powerful it is to sustain the existence of trees”
- Karisha Saraswati
“The cycle of existence. Within the life of anything there is a process of change and growth. The complexity of growth shows though the
24

imprint of time, a human beings age shows through the skin. A tree may go through seasonal cycles by the changing of leaves but within its roots age is evident. Humans and trees share a similar cycle in nature and should acknowledge their comparison”
- Sarah Kambara
“Our concept is life and existence, and how humans are a part of nature just as much as anything else. We decided to construct a face out leaves going the through the major phases of aging through out life. We did this to show that humans and plants are all connected, and we hope to establish this with our poster.” -Bryan Pierle Facebook page A sustainability symposium and bonfire facebook page was created to promote the events. Since there are already a group of Ringling student followers and participants on the page, continuous utilization of this page should be used by the committee. Lessons For Future Events from The Bonfire and Symposium • Learned challenges of motivating participants • Leveraging contacts on committee • Nix “Sustainability Symposium” and make it sexier "Sustainability is the New Black" • Use posters generated for the competition to bring awareness • Poster webpage link • Poster around campus with sustainability committee logo on them • Start conversation on the webpage/facebook • Put posters up on the student center “Green floor” next Fall 2013 semester • Post video on ART Network website • Create promotional materials to give to new students to create sustainability awareness • Bring friends to the Bonfire • Provide Sustainability DIY projects, and encourage discussions about sustainability • Provide veggie dogs and all free trade or locally grown food Conclusions

In order for Ringling to be both socially responsible, environmentally aware, and overall, sustainable, we need to first and foremost bring awareness about the matter to the members of the Ringling College community. Once the sustainability initiative is put in place and we start educating ourselves, the staff, faculty, and students to come, we can start moving forward. And in order to be able to implement the most up-to-date, efficient, and useful strategies, as well as be internationally competitive in sustainability, Ringling needs to stay informed about international trends and what is going on around the world.
