Why Sports?
The Department of Education has always been at the forefront of encouraging learners to join sporting events. A school year would not be complete without municipal, provincial and national games.
The question is why?
The answer is, sports develop valuable life skills
Students develop important skill sets that they can rely on as they face the challenges of life They get to imbibe such virtues as teamwork, leadership, patience and selfconfidence.
The ability to work with others to achieve a common objective is a key skill that a student should acquire As the old saying goes, “No man is an island.” Sports provide an avenue for young men and women to collaborate with their peers in order to achieve their collective dream This is teamwork.
Sports prepares young men and women to lead others Even the simple task of guiding teammates in warm ups before the start of a game is an exercise of leadership. Taking charge during the heat of the game is the ultimate display of leadership And
exemplifying sportsmanship whether in victory or in defeat is leadership at its finest
An athlete will not always be on the winning side. Half of the time, one has to endure the pain of losing The ability to stay the course, no matter how difficult or improbable the chance of victory may be, is the mark of a patient athlete. That even if the reason for losing may not be him, he is able to rise above blaming others and simply does his best to change the outcome of the game.
In order to succeed, one has to believe in his capacity to win That even in the face of seemingly insurmountable circumstances, one has the inner fortitude to have faith in his ability to overcome anything An athlete must always listen to the quiet voice that whispers to him that he can do it, not the loud scream of arrogance that tells him that he is better than the others
So, why not sports?
Humans are the smartest animals on Earth at least according to human standards But we have never perfected the secrets to overcoming our worst enemy-DOUBTING OURSELVES.
More often than not, the eerie silent battles that play inside an athlete’s mind and heart are the unseen and unexpressed ones The fear of losing, of failure, of being criticized, of being laughed at, of making mistakes, of getting injured –all may have been their silent way of validating their abilities as players
Though there is no perfect way to master over these things It is worth to try overcoming the greatest giant –FEAR
So, allow me to share a few gems that will hopefully help in vanishing the fear inside us all especially our dearest athletes
Play for the moment!
When we are facing opposing teams and the fear of losing starts swallowing us, we tend to get into the flow of the game We prejudge the game and think too much about outcomes; over-thinking doubles our fears.
Trying to let yourself play for the moment and allow games to happen and react as it is at the moment will free our mind from the anxiety of predicting outcomes.
Trust your practiced-skills.
By the way, our prime goal is to trust our athletic ability when we perform We have spent countless days mastering our crafts We have perfected our personals skills
Not thinking ahead and reacting during competition are the simple ways to let go of the fear Keep our thinking and performance simple Focus on what we have to do for the moment in front our eyes Focus on performing freely and trusting your skills from practice.
And finally, live for the moment, instead of letting fear swallow us.
Face our current giants
