SDCF Celebrates 35 Years of Bringing Philanthropy to Life

“One of the toughest decisions in leaving a legacy is who to leave it to, whether a person or an organization. Governor Mickelson showed leadership in creating SDCF as part of his legacy. And one of the tests of a legacy is how well the person or organization, in this case, performs when you are not around. That is the lasting test of a legacy. I submit that Governor Mickelson’s legacy is alive and well.”

Through the efforts of great leaders and donors, we celebrate the impact of SDCF since 1987. From the beginning, SDCF has focused on helping people achieve their charitable goals and provide grants to nonprofit organizations across South Dakota. Reaching our 35th anniversary, SDCF has been blessed to partner with our generous donors to provide more than $224 million in grants.

“Congratulations to the South Dakota Community Foundation for serving the state for 35 years. It’s been an amazing 35 years of promoting philanthropy in South Dakota. We at the Larson Family Foundation have taken their expert advice over the years and have always been impressed with the competency and integrity of the South Dakota Community Foundation’s board and staff. It is important we continue to support this because, in the end, it is all about the people served. Congratulations.”

Dale Larson, Christen-Larson Heritage Circle Legacy Society Founding Member

The journey is not over. The legacy Governor Mickelson, our donors and our nonprofit and community partners are creating for our state is still very much alive. It is an exciting start for the next 35 years of bringing philanthropy to life for a stronger South Dakota.
