Golden Eagle Quick Hits Moving On Up UMC outside hitter Brittany Looker (Jr., OH, Rochester, Minn.) has had a very strong 2013 season so far for the Golden Eagles. She is averaging 3.65 kills per set, which is the seventh in the NSIC, the premier NCAA Division II volleyball conference. Looker is currently in the top 10 all-time for kills at UMC as she currently sits at eighth with 840 career kills. She needs just 20 more to surpass former teammate Amanda Swann in seventh place. In addition, Looker is closing in on 1,000 career points at UMC as she currently needs just 31 points. Slaying The Dragons The University of Minnesota Crookston snapped a 16-match winless streak against MSU Moorhead last Friday as they came from behind 2-1 to pick up a 3-2 victory over the Dragons. The Golden Eagles were led in the match by Brittany Looker (Jr., OH, Rochester, Minn.) with 16 kills while Alexandra Skeeter (Sr., OH, Milwaukee, Wis.) with 11 kills and Morgan VanGerpen (Jr., MH, Overland Park, Kan.) added 10 kills. The win over the Dragons is the first for any UMC player currently on the roster and for Head Coach Lee Anderson in his seven years leading the team. VanGerpen Stepping Up Junior middle hitter Morgan VanGerpen from Overland Park, Kansas has had a strong season so far and was an integral part of the team’s sweep of Minnesota State and their win over Minnesota State University Moorhead VanGerpen had nine kills, six blocks and hit .600 as the Golden Eagles slaughtered the Mavericks. She has been a force on the block, especially of late with six against Minnesota State, five versus Upper Iowa and four against Winona State. VanGerpen had 11 kills and seven blocks in the win over MSU Moorhead. She is averaging 1.68 kills per set and 0.88 blocks per set. Crucial Stretch The Golden Eagles have a crucial stretch coming up in the next two weeks as their next four matches are against teams that they are either tied with or who are ranked below them in the polls. If the Golden Eagles want to move up in the standings they will have to end the next four matches with a good record. UMC, Sioux Falls and Minot State are tied for 10th overall while U-Mary and Bemidji State are currently below UMC in the standings. Their fifth match of the stretch will come against No .6 Southwest Minnesota State University. Five-Set Thrillers The University of Minnesota Crookston has been prone for five-set matches this season as they have battled back in several matches this season and have currently played in four five-set matches this season. The Golden Eagles have picked up five-set wins over MSU Moorhead and Bemidji State and lost to St. Cloud State and Upper Iowa.

Head Coach Lee Anderson Coach Lee Anderson has been with the University of Minnesota, Crookston Golden Eagle Volleyball program since 2007 and is entering his 12th season as a head coach at the collegiate level. In those five seasons at the helm of UMC, Anderson has helped the UMC Volleyball program make great strides. In 2011, Anderson took a team that was winless with an 0-28 record and guided them to a record of 12-18, the best an Anderson-coached team has had at UMC. A highlight of the 2011 season was defeating Minnesota State University, Mankato, a team that was ranked 13th in the nation at the time. The Golden Eagles finished 11th in the league with a young squad. The next season, the Golden Eagles put together another solid season with an 11-16 (7-13 NSIC) mark as they again finished 11th in the league. The Golden Eagles will look to improve on the last two seasons as they return five-of-six starters and have six seniors on the 2013 squad. Prior to his appointment at UMC, Anderson served as the head volleyball coach at Glenville State College in Glenville, W.V. for two seasons (2005-06). In 2005, the Pioneers had a record of 3-28. Anderson turned the 2006 season around, finishing with a record of 10-17. The team set a new school record for conference wins in a season. The team also had one player named 2nd team All-Conference, one named Honorable Mention and three freshmen made the All-Freshmen team. “We are excited to have Lee join the UMC athletics staff and campus community, says Athletics Director Stephanie Helgeson. “His enthusiasm and experience will be a tremendous fit for our volleyball program. We are very impressed by the passion and commitment Lee brings to our athletic program and Golden Eagle Volleyball.” A native of Renfrew (Ontario), Canada, Anderson also served as the assistant women’s volleyball coach at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Mich. During Anderson’s tenure as assistant coach, the Bulldogs compiled a record of 41-21 (.661), including a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference (GLIAC) Tournament Championship in 2004 and a trip to the NCAA Regional Tournament. He served as head coach for three seasons (2000-03) at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario. At Lakehead, Anderson had a 13-38 (.342) overall record in the Ontario University Athletics East Division during his three seasons at the helm, including a fifth place finish in 2002-03. He also directed volleyball sport development camps and organized department media conferences during his tenure. In addition to his coaching duties, Anderson served as a practical instructor in the school’s Kinesiology Department. Besides his collegiate coaching experience, Anderson has also coached various midget, youth and high school teams since earning a Bachelor of Science degree in human kinetics from the University of Ottawa (Ontario) in 1998. His previous head coaching positions included Henry Wisewood High School (1999) in Calgary, Ottawa’s Immaculata High School (1995-98) along with both the Northwestern Ontario Under-18 (2002) and Under-17 (2001-02) development teams. In 2000, Anderson earned his masters degree in kinesiology with a specialization in the art and science of coaching from the University of Calgary.
