THE LAST TWO WEEKs IN GOLDEN EAGLE ATHLETICS - The University of Minnesota Crookston women’s basketball team picked up a 104-84 win over Bemidji State University to open up NSIC play last weekend. The Golden Eagles are 4-1 overall on the season. UMC was led by an oustanding performance from Alexa Thielman (So., G, Buffalo, Minn./Health Science), who finished with 30 points, inclduing shooting six-of-six from beyond the arc. In addition to Thielman, Ebony Livingston (Jr., G/F, Minneapolis, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) finished with 21 points. The conference opening win marks the first time the UMC women’s team has opened the conference season with a win since the 2008-09 campaign. - The UMC hunt seat equestrian team earned a first place finish Sat., Nov. 23 and a second place finish Sun., Nov. 24 in a pair of home shows at the University Teaching and Outreach Center in Crookston, Minn. The Golden Eagles were led by Sam Kramer (Jr., Corcoran, Minn./Animal Science) who earned High Point Rider on Sunday after picking up wins in Novice Equitation Over Fences and Novice Equitation on the Flat. - The UMC volleyball team finished the 2013 season with a 15-14 mark, their best record in their seven seasons under the leadership of Head Coach Lee Anderson. The Golden Eagles earned the eighth-seed in the conference tournament after a big season in which they finished 10-10 in the best Division II volleyball conference in the country. The Golden Eagles had Brittany Looker (So., OH, Rochester, Minn./Health Science) recognized on the All-NSIC First Team. Looker is only the second player in school history to earn First Team honors along with Joan Ebnet. Looker also surpassed 1,000 kills late in the season, becoming the fifth player to do so. - The Golden Eagle football team finished Interim Head Coach Mike Fritze’s first season at the helm with a 2-9 mark overall. Minnesota Crookston had two players recognized as all conference as Andrew Hall (Jr., LB, Detroit, Mich./Criminal Justice) earned All-NSIC North Second Team honors and Tevin Kellum (Sr., DB, Detroit, Mich./Criminal Justice) was named All-NSIC North Honorable Mention. - The University of Minnesota Crookston women’s soccer team was one of 864 collegiate soccer teams (271 men and 593 women) who earned the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Team Academic Award for maintaining a 3.0 grade point average or above for the 2012-13 academic year. The Golden Eagles mainatined a 3.17 grade point average. - The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) announced All-Academic teams for the 2013 fall athletic season Friday. The Golden Eagles had 20 student-athletes honored this season from the football, volleyball and soccer teams. The volleyball and soccer teams each had seven individuals recognized while the football team had six individuals earn the distinction. Minnesota Crookston’s total for the fall of 20 student-athletes is up from 17 last fall. - The University of Minnesota Crookston men’s basketball team fell 78-63 to the Bemidji State men’s team to open up the NSIC season. The Golden Eagles are 3-2 so far through the first five games of the 2013-14 campaign. Minnesota Crookston has been led by a pair of seniors so far this year. Ashton Harrell (G, Houston, Texas/Sports and Rec Management) is averaging 13.2 points per game while Brandon Burns (Sr., F, Baton Rouge, La./Sports and Rec Management) is averaging 13.0 points per contest.

UMC TEAMBACKERS STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK For the Week of Nov. 28 - Dec. 4

- Alexa Thielman (So., Women’s Basketball, Buffalo, Minn.) scored a career-high 30 points on 7-of-14 shooting, including shooting an unblemished 6-of-6 from beyond the arc to help the Golden Eagles past Bemidji State 104-84. UMC fell to BSU twice last year and the Beavers came in with a 4-0 mark. Thielman was one rebound away from a double-double with nine boards on the game. She was 10-of-11 from the charity stripe. The six three-pointers ties UMC’s individual mark. The Golden Eagles hit 13 treys to pick up their first win in a conference opener since the 2008-09 season.

- Tyler West, Jr. (Jr., Men’s Basketball, Portland, Ore.) had 14 points on the game, on 6-of-10 shooting from the field. He had two boarrds, one assist, one block and three steals. The Golden Eagle men’s team fell 78-63 in their conference home opener against Bemidji State University. West, a newcomer to UMC, is averaging 9.2 points and 5.0 rebounds per game this season.

- Ashton Harrell (Sr., Men’s Basketball, Houston, Texas), tallied 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field and was 4-of-7 from the freethrow line. He also grabbed five boards and tallied one steal. The Golden Eagles fell 78-63 to the Beavers in the conference opener. Harrell is averaging 13.2 points and 4.4 rebounds so far this season.

For the Week of Nov. 21 - Nov. 27

- Sam Kramer (Jr., Hunt Seat Equestrian, Corcoran, Minn.), helped the UMC hunt seat equestrian team to a very successful pair of home shots in which they were the High Point Team, finishing first in Saturday’s show, and placing second in Sunday’s show. Kramer had a really strong performance individually for Coach Brooke Leininger’s squad in Sunday’s show. Kramer won her section of Novice Equitation Over Fences, which was her first time competing over fences. She also captured a win in Novice Equitation on the Flat in order to win the High Point Rider title for Sunday’s show.

- Brandon Burns (Sr., Men’s Basketball, Baton Rouge, La.), averaged 22 points a game for the Golden Eagles last week as UMC improved to 3-1 in non-conference for the 2013-14 season with an 81-61 win over Finlandia University and an 88-79 victory over University of Jamestown. Burns connected on 17-of-29 of his shots for 58.6 percent. In addition, he hit 2-of-6 three-pointers for the week and was 8-of-10 from the charity stripe. Burns had a game-high 26 points on 10-of-16 shooting from the field in the win over the Jimmies. Versus Finlandia, the senior tallied 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field. He added eight boards, two blocks and three steals on the week.
