UMC TEAMBACKERS STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK For the Week of Oct. 9 - Oct. 16
- Delaney McIntyre (So., Women’s Soccer, Flin Flon, Manitoba) played a crucial part in the Golden Eagles’ win over MSU Moorhead last Saturday, only the fourth win ever for UMC over the Dragons, as they captured the “Highway 75 Rivalry Rock”. McIntyre scored in the 12th minute off of a Kelah Peterson (Jr., F, Bismarck, N.D./Early Childhood Education) assist to give UMC a 1-0 lead. Later in the first half, McIntyre would find Kallie Gau (Fr., MF, Monticello, Minn./Early Childhood Education) on an assist on what would prove to be the game-winning goal. Against Northern State on Sunday, McIntyre led the team in shots with four as they picked up a two overtime 0-0 tie against the Wolves. The four points UMC obtained on the weekend were the most they have picked up in an NSIC road weekend in the history of the program.
- Lexie Gauger (Fr., Women’s Soccer, Green Bay, Wis.) earned NSIC Goalie of the Week for her performance in net for the Golden Eagles. She was crucial in the 0-0 tie against Northern State as she came away with the clean sheet with four saves on the game. The shutout was the second of Gauger’s career as she currently has a 1.15 goals against average. In the win against MSU Moorhead, Gauger stopped nine Dragon chances in 90 minutes and allowed one goal. Gauger and McIntyre were chosen as Co-Student-Athletes of the Week for their equal contributions to a major weekend for the UMC soccer team.
- Matt McClure (Jr., Men’s Golf, Grand Rapids, Minn.), finished in a tie for 13th place at the Missouri Western State University Drury Inn Central Region Invite Monday and Tuesday at the St. Joseph Country Club in St. Joseph, Mo. McClure was part of a very deep 100-person field that included all of the top golfers in the Central Region. McClure carded two 74’s and a 75 as the Golden Eagles placed 13th in the 20 team event, which was the final event of the fall for the UMC men’s golf team who will have a break before getting back to action in the spring.
- Brittany Looker (Jr., Volleyball, Rochester, Minn.), had one of her strongest weekends overall as a Golden Eagle, not necessarily on the stat sheet but with her play overall against two strong NSIC programs. Looker averaged 4.3 kills per set on the weekend as the Golden Eagles split with No. 1 Concordia-St. Paul and Minnesota State, losing 3-0 to the Golden Bears and winning a decisive 3-0 match over perennial NSIC power Minnesota State. On Friday, Looker played one of her best matches of her career as she was one of the best players on the court against e six-time defending National Champion Golden Bears. Looker had 14 kills and hit .256 for the match. Looker averaged 4.6 kills per set. She had seven kills alone in the second set in which UMC tested Concordia sending the set to the wire where they lost just 25-23. Against the Mavericks, she led the Golden Eagles with 12 kills for four kills per set and hit .171 as UMC dominated Minnesota State to get the sweep. Looker was also strong on the block on the weekend with one solo block versus the Mavericks and two against the Golden Bears.
- Tyler Hansen (Jr., Football, Morris, Minn.), had a gritty performance amid severe conditions epitomized the game for UMC against Bemidji State as it was played in the muddiest of conditions after heavy rain pounded the area Friday night and Saturday morning. The junior had seven punts for 32.4 yard average in a wet environment with a long of 55 and two punts inside the 20 yard line including burying the Beavers at the three-yard line with under two minutes remaining which ultimately led to safety by Hansen tackling Avery Walker in the end zone. Hansen also had a converted fake punt which he ran for two yards for a first down for the Beavers, as well as a blocked punt off BSU’s Zach Pulkinen as the man was everywhere for the Golden Eagles helping UMC to a 16-14 win over Bemidji State to end a 14-game drought against the Beavers and capture the “Hub Cap Trophy” for the first-time ever in the 10 years the two schools have been playing for it.
