THE LAST Three WEEKs IN GOLDEN EAGLE ATHLETICS - The University of Minnesota Crookston volleyball team set an NCAA Division II record Sat., Nov. 2 as they scored 37 points in a single set to help defeat Augustana College in a huge victory for the Golden Eagles. The 37 points is believed to be a NCAA Division II record for points in a single set during the 25-point scoring era according to the 2013 NCAA Division II Record Book. The previous record was 35 points, which was tied by Augustana in the first set. Four teams had previously accomplished 35 points, it was most recently accomplished by Washburn University against Emporia State University Nov. 12, 2011. In addition, the Golden Eagles’ 87 points in the three-set match was also a NCAA Division II record for most points in a three-set match during the 25-point scoring era. The Golden Eagles were led on the match by several strong performances as Brittany Looker (Jr., OH, Rochester, Minn.) averaged 6.3 kills per set and 7.3 digs per match and a double-double in the first set with 11 kills and 10 digs. Chelsea Wiesner (Sr., Lib., Rochester, Minn.) finished the match with 22 digs while Sierra Trost (Fr., S, Ham Lake, Minn.) had 52 assists. The Golden Eagles are currently alone in seventh place in the NSIC standings as they have won seven of their last 10 matches. The top eight teams in the final NSIC standings will move on to the NSIC Tournament beginning Nov. 20. - UMC volleyball player Chelsea Wiesner (Sr., Lib., Rochester, Minn.) was named NSIC Defensive Player of the Week after averaging 6.43 digs per set against Augustana and No. 18 Wayne State on the weekend. She had 29 digs in a crucial 3-0 victory over Augustana Saturday. The libero averaged an astounding 9.67 digs per set in the win Saturday over the Vikings. She had 16 digs alone in a 37-35 set one victory including several highlight-reel digs. - The UMC soccer team finished the season with a 0-4-2 mark in the final three weekends. The Golden Eagles picked up a pair of ties at home against Minot State University and University Mary Oct. 26 and 27, two teams they had lost to by a combined score of 10-1 the previous season. The Golden Eagles culminated their season by having two players named to the All-NSIC team. Rachelle Alcini (Jr., D, Ann Arbor, Mich.) was named to the All-NSIC Third Team after anchoring a young back line in 2013. Alcini helped the Golden Eagles to five shutouts this season which ties a school record set in 2002. In addition, Alcini helped the Golden Eagles to only 25 goals conceded this season shattering the previous record of 36 set in 2011. Alcini is the first women’s soccer player since Justine Jones in 209 to be named Third Team All-NSIC. Nikki Hammond (Sr., F, Nelson, Minn.) was named All-NSIC Honorable Mention after scoring three goals in 2013. She scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Northern Michigan University and was consistently one of the hardest-working players on the field. - The UMC football team has gone 1-2 in the last two weekends with losses to Minot State University and No. 6 University of Minnesota Duluth and a 20-14 win over Minnesota State University, Moorhead Oct. 19 in the Red River Valley Showdown Presented by State Farm Insurance. The Golden Eagles won their second trophy of the season, capturing the State Farm Traveling Trophy which took its place next to the Hubcap the Golden Eagles won against Bemidji State University. The Golden Eagles were led in the game by a 100-yard rushing performance from Talo Pascal (So., RB, Arlington, Texas). - The UMC hunt seat equestrian earned a Reserve High Point Team Title Oct. 19 as they went to University of Wisconsin-River Falls for a pair of shows. The Golden Eagle western equestrian team were led by Mitzi Marlin (Sr., Nowthen, Minn.) in shows at the University of Minnesota Twin Cites as Marlin had wins in both her Open Reining class and Open Horsemanship class to earn Inidvidual High Point Rider for the show Sunday. - The University of Minnesota Crookston women’s basketball team opened up the 2013-14 season with a pair of exhibitions at University of North Dakota and North Dakota State University. The Golden Eagles fell 64-59 after leading at the half against the Bison and dropped the game to UND 85-66. The Golden Eagles were led by 20 points from Alexa Thielman (So., G, Buffalo, Minn.) against NDSU and 13 points from Katrina Moenkedick (So., F, Perham, Minn.) versus UND.

UMC TEAMBACKERS STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK For the Week of Oct. 31 - Nov. 6)

Wiesner had 16 digs in Friday’s 3-1 loss to Wayne State. Wiesner comes into this weekend averaging 4.25 digs per set. She is the all-time digs leader at the University of Minnesota Crookston. She also earned NSIC Defensive of Player of the Week for her performance.
- Tevin Kellum (Sr., Football, Detroit, Mich.) had 17 tackles on the weekend against the potent Bulldog offense with nine solo tackles and eight assisted tackles. Kellum’s 17 total tackles ties current assistant coach Cecil Brown, Jr. and former player Justin Reed for fourth all-time at Minnesota Crookston. In addition, his nine solo tackles tied five other players, along with himself, for fifth all-time. Kellum also had nine solo tackles against Wayne State College in 2011. Kellum is currently leading the team with 78 total tackles on the season. His 45 solo tackles on the year is just five shy of the fifth all-time in a season, currently held by Reed and Nick Starcevic.
For the Week of Oct. 24 - Oct. 30)
- Rachelel Alcini (Jr., Soccer, Ann Arbor, Mich.), was integral for the UMC soccer team in a pair of ties against U-Mary and Minot State as the Golden Eagles held their opponents scoreless for a combined 220 minutes on the weekend. Alcini, in her center back role for UMC, helped the Golden Eagle defense hold opponents to only eight shots on goal. Alcini was also big on set pieces for UMC, especially against U-Mary as she had several balls she played into the box that created scoring chances for the Golden Eagles.
- Mitzi Marlin (Sr., Western Equestrian, Nowthen, Minn.), earned High Point Rider for the Sunday show in Falcon Heights, Minn., hosted by the University of Minnesota. Marlin had wins in both her Open Reining class and her Open Horsemanship class Sunday. Saturday, Marlin had a well-deserved fourth-place finish for the Golden Eagles.
- Paul Webster (Sr., Football, Opa-Locka, Fla.), helped the Golden Eagles to limit the Minot State offense to 233 yards while leading the Golden Eagles with 11 tackles (6 solo, 5 unassisted). He also had one pass break-up and returned a blocked field goal 85 yards to pay dirt. Webster is becoming a specialist on blocked kick returns as he returned a blocked extra point for two points last season against University of Mary.
