Recently IN GOLDEN EAGLE ATHLETICS - The University of Minnesota Crookston hunt seat equestrian team captured the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Regional Championship with an impressive weekend at their pair of home shows at the University Teaching and Outreach Center. The Golden Eagles finished in first place in both of the shows coming up with big performances in order to overcome the University of Minnesota, who came into the weekend in first place in the IHSA Region Standings. UMC was tied for first place with the University of Minnesota coming into the weekend and pulled ahead to win the Regional Title. - University of Minnesota Crookston hunt seat equestrian rider Emily Steeley (So., Portsmouth, R.I.) won the Cacchione Cup for Zone 7, Region 3 as the High Point Rider in the Open Equitation division that wins the most numbers of points over the regular season. Steeley is the first UMC rider to ever win the Cacchione Cup for the region. Steeley will now advance to compete against riders from across the nation at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Nationals May 9-11 in Harrisburg, Pa. - The University of Minnesota Crookston football team announced the signing of 28 student-athletes to National Letters of Intent or Offers of Admission Wednesday evening. The signing class is the first under Head Coach Mike Fritze, who officially had the interim tag removed following the 2013 season. The Golden Eagle recruiting class was highlighted by 18 players from right in UMC’s backyard in Minnesota and North Dakota. The 18 regional players is one of the highest totals the Golden Eagles have had within the state of Minnesota and North Dakota in recent history. - The University of Minnesota Crookston soccer program announced the addition of six signees for their 2014 signing class. The Golden Eagles signed Ellie Brettschneider (MF/D, 5-6, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South H.S.), Nicole Corbin (D/MF, 5-7, Ramsey, Minn./Anoka H.S.), Maggie Gibbons (D, 5-6, Cohasset, Minn./Grand Rapids H.S.) Gabby Kekke (MF, 5-6, Argyle, Minn./Stephen-Argyle H.S.), Beth Lastovich (MF/F, 5-9, Hugo, Minn./White Bear Lake H.S.) and Miranda Mosher (F, 5-10, Watertown, Minn./Orono H.S.) to National Letters of Intent. - The Minnesota Crookston women’s basketball team picked up their first win on the road this season with a win over Southwest Minnesota State University Feb. 1. The Golden Eagles were led in the 76-69 win by 18 points from Alexa Thielman (So., G, Buffalo, Minn./ Health Science) and 13 points from Katrina Moenkedick (So., F, Perham, Minn./Early Childhood Education). UMC is currently 8-12 (5-11 NSIC) heading into the weekend. - The Minnesota Crookston men’s basketball team came as close as you could to an upset of University of Sioux Falls Jan. 31. The Golden Eagles were down three with two seconds remaining and Tim Lubke (So., G, St. Paul, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) was fouled from beyond the arc giving the Golden Eagles a chance. However, Lubke would miss the second free throw and was forced to miss his third attempt to give UMC a chance at a shot. Minnesota Crookston fell in the game 75-73. Tyler West, Jr. (Jr., F, Portland, Ore./ Communications) led the way with a near double-double of 16 points and nine rebounds. The Golden Eagles are 4-16 (1-15 NSIC) heading into the weekend. - The Minnesota Crookston tennis program opened up the 2014 season last weekend against St. Cloud State University and Upper Iowa University. The game were the first for new head coach Kyle Anderson who takes over for Josh Lunak. The Golden Eagles fell 9-0 to the Huskies and 8-1 to the Peacocks. Casey Paris (Sr., Fairmont, Minn.) came away with the lone win of the weekend, while playing at No. 4 singles against Upper Iowa.

UMC TEAMBACKERS STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK For the Week of Jan. 30 - Feb. 5

- Emily Steeley (Sr., Hunt Seat Equestrian, Portsmouth, R.I.) was named UMC Teambackers Student-Athlete of the Week after becoming the first UMC equestrian rider to win the Cacchione Cup for the Region. Steeley will now advance to the National Championships in Harrisburg, Pa. May 9-11 to compete for the National Cacchione Cup crown with other top riders from across the nation. Steeley had a successful weekend at UMC’s home show, including winning High Point Rider in Saturday’s show in order to help capture the Cacchione Cup. Steeley also helped the Golden Eagles win the Regional Championship as a team.

- Derrick Redd (So., Men’s Basketball, Menifee, Calif.) averaged 14.5 points per game in road games against University of Sioux Falls and Southwest Minnesota State University. Redd had nine points on 4-of-9 shooting as the Golden Eagles fell by just two points to USF in a highly contested NSIC game at the Stewart Center in Sioux Falls, S.D. In Saturday’s game against SMSU, Redd carried the Golden Eagles as the team struggled overall to get over the Mustangs’ press defensively. Redd was 6-of-10 from the field and 3-of-4 from beyond the arc with 20 points on the game. Redd is currently averaging 9.4 points per game on the season.

For the Week of Jan. 23 - 29

- Alexa Thielman (So., Women’s Basketball, Buffalo, Minn.) averaged 17 points per game on the weekend as the Golden Eagles fell to the Beavers 72-64 and the Marauders 76-68 in two closely contested NSIC North match-ups. Thielman was 11-of-31 for the weekend, while going 5-of-13 for 38.5 percent from beyond the arc. Thielman had 21 points and four rebounds against Minot State, including going 5-of-11 from three-point range. Against U-Mary, Thielman had 13 points, four rebounds and four assists

- Brandon Burns (Sr., Men’s Basketball, Baton Rouge, La.), had one of his most consistent weekends of the 2013-14 season. The senior averaged 14.5 points and 4.5 rebounds on the weekend as Minnesota Crookston lost to U-Mary and Minot State in a pair of road tilts. Burns was 5-of-10 from the field with 12 points and four rebounds against Minot State. Saturday against U-Mary, Burns was 8-of-17 from the field with 17 points and five boards.
