Recently IN GOLDEN EAGLE ATHLETICS - The Minnesota Crookston women’s basketball team went into the holiday break on a five-game losing skid but snapped it with a pair of huge wins over Winona State and Upper Iowa at Lysaker Gymnasium Jan. 3 and 4. The Golden Eagles took down Upper Iowa 80-69 after shooting 49.2 percent from the field. Moenkedick led the way with a career-high 30 points and 11 rebounds. Alexa Thielman (So., G, Buffalo, Minn./Health Science) added 19 points, five assists and four rebounds, despite struggling from three-point range. Ebony Livingston (Jr., G/F, Minneapolis, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) chipped in 16 points on the day. UMC completed the weekend sweep with a 71-58 victory over Winona State University to move their season record to 6-6. The Golden Eagles were led by Thielman’s 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting with four made three-pointers. Moenkedick added 12 points and nine rebounds while Livingston added 10 points. The Golden Eagles shot 46.6 percent from the field and connected on eight threes as a team. - Katrina Moenkedick (So., F, Perham, Minn./Early Childhood Education) became the first UMC women’s basketball player and the third UMC student-athlete to earn NSIC Player of the Week honors this season. Moenkedick averaged a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds a game in a pair of crucial NSIC wins over Winona State University and Upper Iowa University. She recorded a double-double in an 80-69 win over Upper Iowa Friday as she poured in a career-high 30 points with 11 rebounds on the night. Moenkedick was also huge defensively as she had six steals against the Peacocks. She went 10-of-16 from the field and was 10-of-13 from the charity stripe. Saturday against Winona State, Moenkedick added a near double-double of 12 points and nine rebounds as the Golden Eagles picked up huge win against the Warriors 71-58. Moenkedick went 4-of-11 from the field and 4-of-4 from the free-throw line. On the weekend she finished the weekend shooting 51.8 percent from the field and 82.3 percent from the charity stripe. - The Minnesota Crookston men’s basketball team struggled against Winona State and Upper Iowa Jan. 3 and 4. The Golden Eagles are currently on a six-game losing streak and will look to snap the skid in upcoming games. The Golden Eagles were without their leading scorer Ashton Harrell (Sr., G, Houston, Texas/Sports and Rec Management), who will likely miss the rest of the season due to an injury he suffered over the holiday break. UMC fell 97-66 to Upper Iowa after the Peacocks shot 50.7 percent as ateam and connected on 13 three-pointers. Brandon Burns (Sr., F, Baton Rouge, La./Sports and Rec Management) led the team with 21 points while Derrick Redd (So., G, Menifee, Calif./Sports and Rec Management) added 12 points. Saturday against Winona State, the Golden Eagles put up a fight early, going toe-to-toe with the Warriors, but were unable to keep that much for the full 40 minutes, falling 88-52. Redd led UMC with 14 points and six boards while Tyler West, Jr. (Jr., F, Portland, Ore./ Communication) had nine points and six rebounds and John Hughes (So., F, Tualatin, Ore./Management) added eight points and eight boards.

UMC TEAMBACKERS STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK For the Week of Jan. 2 - Jan. 8

- Katrina Moenkedick (So., Women’s Basketball, Perham, Minn.)was also named NSIC Player of the Week for her performance last weekend in which she averaged a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds in two crucial NSIC wins over Upper Iowa and Winona State. Moenkedick was also named the KROX Player of the Week. She recorded a double-double in an 80-69 win over Upper Iowa Friday as she poured in a career-high 30 points with 11 rebounds on the night. Moenkedick was also huge defensively as she had six steals against the Peacocks. She went 10-of-16 from the field and was 10-of-13 from the charity stripe. - Derrick Redd (So., Men’s Basketball, Menifee, Calif.) averaged 13 points in games against Upper Iowa and Winona State last weekend. Redd stepped up as the Golden Eagles are currently looking to replace the numbers put up by leading scorer Ashton Harrell, who is out for the rest of the season with an injury. Redd tallied 12 points and three boards in a loss to Upper Iowa Friday. Saturday, the sophomore guard tallied 14 points, including scoring nine of the first 11 points in the game for the Golden Eagles as they hung with Winona State early. Redd also tallied six rebounds on the game. He had come off the bench for the first 11 games before getting the start against the Warriors. He is currently averaging 8.3 points per game in an average of 18.2 minutes per game.

For the Week of Dec. 12 - Dec. 18

- Katrina Moenkedick (So., Women’s Basketball, Perham, Minn.) averaged 14.5 points and five rebounds last weekend in games against Northern State and MSU Moorhead. She was 7-of-16 from the field with 16 points and six boards in a hard-fought loss to the Wolves Friday as the Golden Eagles came up just three points short after testing NSU all night. Moenkedick was 7-of-16 from the field against Northern State. Against MSU Moorhead, Moenkedick had 13 points and four rebounds, was 4-of-10 from the field and 5-of-6 from the chairty stripe. Selected to the All-NSIC Freshman Team last season, Moenkedick is currently averaging 14.6 points and 6.2 rebounds as a sophomore.

- Tyler West, Jr. (Jr., Men’s Basketball, Portland, Ore.), has made an instant impact as a junior college transfer for the Golden Eagles, averaging 10.2 points and 5.3 rebounds this season. On the weekend, West averaged 12.5 pints and 7.5 rebounds as Minnesota Crookston fell in a pair of games against MSU Moorhead and Northern State. West had his first career double-double at UMC with 10 points and 10 boards against Northern State Friday. He was also 5-of-6 from the free-throw line against the Wolves. Versus MSU Moorhead, West had 15 points and five rebounds, was 4-of-8 from the field and 6-of-8 from the charity stripe.
