Recently IN GOLDEN EAGLE ATHLETICS - The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team completed their 2014 Spring Break Trip to Clearwater, Fla. with a 1-4 mark. The Golden Eagles are currently 1-11 on the season. The highlight of the trip was a 7-6 win over Hillsdale College March 14 to open play in Clearwater. UMC handled adversity well and was able to overcome the Chargers for the win. The victory went to Trevor Buttermore (So., P, North St. Paul, Minn./Criminal Justice), who went seven innings and gave up five earned runs on 10 hits to pick up his first career victory. UMC had 10 hits in the game led by the play of Ryan Haggstrom (So., C/1B/P, Apple Valley, Minn./Accounting), who was 3-of-5 with two runs scored and an RBI, and Marcus Campbell (So., OF/P, St. Croix Falls, Wis./Golf and Turf Management), who was 2-of-4 with two runs scored and two RBI’s.

UMC also played games against West Chester University, Slippery Rock University, Lock Haven University and Johnson University Florida. The Golden Eagles battled in all four games but was unable to come up on top losing 14-7 to West Chester, 14-4 to Slippery Rock, 12-5 to Lock Haven and 10-4 to Johnson.

- The University of Minnesota Crookston softball team has played a whirlwind schedule over Spring Break in Clermont, Fla. with 13 games in eight days scheduled. The Golden Eagles have currently played 11 games, going 2-9 thus far. UMC is already just one win shy of their total of three last season with the whole conference season still to play. UMC’s trip to Florida has been highlighted by a 4-1 win over Slippery Rock University and a 5-2 victory over Saint Michael’s College. The victory over Slippery Rock was spearheaded by a three-run home run in the top of the seventh inning by Ashley Manusos (Sr., OF, Spring Grove, Ill./Sports and Rec Management). Against Saint Michael’s, Minnesota Crookston was led by Allison Foley (So., SS, Lockport, Ill./Accounting), who was 3-for-4 with two RBI’s and one run scored. Minnesota Crookston has also played two games against Ursuline College, games against Alderson-Broaddus College, Assumption College, Merrimack College, University of Sioux Falls, West Chester University, Caldwell College and University of New Haven.

- The University of Minnesota Crookston women’s basketball team had seven players named to the NSIC Winter All-Academic Team. To be eligible for this honor, the student-athlete must be a member of the varsity traveling team and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher. The athlete must also be a sophomore or higher in athletic status and can be a transfer. Kenzie Church (Jr., Fairmount, N.D./Management), Avery Jackson (So., Wadena, Minn./Elementary Education), Lindsey Lahr (So., Isle, Minn./Health Management), Ashley Martell (Jr., Somerset, Wis./Health Science), Erika McRoberts (So., Byron, Minn./Health Science), Alexa Thielman (So., Buffalo, Minn./Health Science) and Christine Thorn (So., St. Michael, Minn./Elementary Education) all earned placement on the squad.

- The Minnesota Crookston men’s golf team opened up the Spring season with a 15th place finish at the Washburn Invitational in Topeka, Kan. The Golden Eagles had a combined score of 328 in the three-round tournament from March 17-18. The Golden Eagles were led on the tournament by Jesse Roscoe (Jr., Big Stone City, S.D./Golf and Turf Management), who tallied a 226 with a low round of 73, to finish tied for 21st. Seth Heppner (So., Crookston, Minn./Management) had the second-best score for UMC, which was a 244 which placed him in 78th in a very deep field.

- The UMC women’s golf team went head-to-head with Bemidji State University at the Dual in the Desert in Phoenix, Ariz. Bemidji State won the dual but Golden Eagle golfer Katie Sheetz (So., Grand Rapids, Minn./Biology) won the individual title by posting an 81 to lead the way for all golfers

UMC TEAMBACKERS STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK For the Week of March 13-19

- Ashley Manusos (Sr., Softball, Spring Grove, Ill.) hit .286 (8-of-28) with three RBI’s and four runs scored in nine games for the Golden Eagles during their Spring Break trip to Clermont, Fla. Manusos’ biggest contribution was a clutch three-run home run in a 4-1 win over Slippery Rock University to deliver the first victory for UMC of the 2014 season. Manusos was 1-of-4 in that game with one run scored and three RBI’s. She also had a strong game against Ursuline College March 16, going 3-of-5 with two runs scored and against Assumption College March 15 going 2-of-4 with two doubles.

- Ryan Haggstrom (So., Baseball, Apple Valley, Minn.) hit .381 with three RBI’s and six runs scored during the team’s Spring Break trip to Florida. Haggstrom peaked early on in the trip getting his season batting average up to .515. Haggstrom was 3-of-5 with one RBI and two runs scored against Hillsdale. Against West Chester, Haggstrom was 3-of-5 with one RBI and two runs scored. He also had an RBI against Slippery Rock and a run scored against Johnson.

For the Week of Jan. 23 - 29

- Caitlin Kelley (Sr., Western Equestrian, White Bear Lake, Minn.) had a strong performance in a head-to-head competition with University of Tennessee-Martin last Friday. The senior scored a 70.5 on her horsemanship pattern in order to win a point in the competition over her UT-Martin competitor. The ride was the last of Kelley's four-year career at Minnesota Crookston as the western equestrian team's season came to a close, outside of Shannon Salm (Jr., Larsen, Minn.), who will be competing at the IHSA Semifinals March 29-30.

Kelley was a team captain for the Golden Eagles for the 2013-14 season and has been an integral part of UMC's success over that period. The senior advanced to IHSA Semifinals last season.

- Richie Navratil (Sr., Baseball, Blansko, Czech Republic), has gotten off to a fantastic start for the Golden Eagles on the mound this year. The senior threw a complete game in the 3-1 loss against Mayville State University Friday, putting UMC in a position to possibly win the game. Navratil gave up three runs on seven hits with one strikeout on the game. Navratil had a three-hit shutout going into the eighth inning before the Comets were finally able to break the shutout. He currently has a 3.38 ERA in two starts and 16 innings pitched this season. Navratil transferred to UMC from Jamestown College prior to last season. The native of the Czech Republic was a foreign exchange student at Norman County West H.S. in Halstad, Minn.
