Golden Eagle Quick Hits The Red River Valley Showdown • Saturday will mark the second edition of the “Red River Valley Showdown” Sponsored by State Farm Insurance, a rivalry game for the Golden Eagles against Minnesota State University Moorhead. he two schools will battle for the “State Farm Traveling Trophy”, which was won last year by the Dragons. The trophy is sponsored by State Farm’s Andy Oman agency in Crookston and the David Eggers agency in Moorhead. The Red River Valley Showdown and the corresponding trophy were developed for the battle between two schools located just 75 miles apart in the “Red River Valley”, an area of Northwest Minnesota, Northeast North Dakota and Southern Manitoba known for its fertile farm land located around the Red River of the North, which starts between Wahpeton, N.D. and Breckenridge, Minn., and drains into Lake Winnipeg in Manitoba, Canada.

Watch Out For Talo • University of Minnesota Crookston sophomore running back Talo Pascal (So., RB, Arlington, Texas/Communications) has emerged in recent weeks and is coming off his strongest game as a Golden Eagle last weekend against St. Cloud State. Pascal rushed for 122 yards on 16 carries including a 75-yard touchdown run in the second half. He also added four catches for 30 yards as he was UMC’s top offensive threat against the Huskies. Pascal will be a crucial piece of the puzzle this weekend against MSU Moorhead as the Golden Eagles are without starter Keith McBride (Sr., RB, Lodi, Wis./Management) due to a concussion. Pascal has 71 carries for 235 yards and two touchdowns this season.

Forcing Turnovers • The University of Minnesota Crookston defense has done a phenomenal job of forcing turnovers this season, especially with fumbles as they are currently second in the nation with number of fumbles recovered which currently stands at 11. 11 different players have recovered fumbles this season.

Two weekends ago against Bemidji State, the Golden Eagles forced three turnovers in the wet and muddy conditions at Ed Widseth Field. UMC currently ranks 44th nationally for turnover margin and 54th nationally for turnovers gained. They have gained 13 turnovers overall this season.

Stopping A Potent Offense • The MSU Moorhead Dragons have struggled on defense this season but have one of the most potent offenses in the NSIC as they are currently ranked fifth in the league for total offense with 461.5 yards per game. The Dragons are led by last week’s NSIC Offensive Player of the Week quarterback Jake Hodge, who is 103-of-175 for 1,322 yards with 13 touchdowns and two interceptions this season. He has also rushed for 426 yards and seven touchdowns while running back Brandon Schell has rushed for 426 yards and two touchdowns. Hodge’s top target has been Adam Jiskra with 39 catches for 596 yards and six touchdowns while Cory Ambrose has 29 catches for 488 yards and four touchdowns. The Dragons put up 45 points on then-No. 11 University of Minnesota Duluth.

Last Season Rewind • The Golden Eagles lost last season’s match-up 35-13 to MSU Moorhead on the road. The Dragons were led by 124 yards rushing by Zayne Medhaug and Hodge, who was 12-of-22 for 161 yards with one touchdown and an interception. UMC was paced by Richard Haley, who had 22 rushes for 112 yards but quarterback A.J. Barge struggled, throwing four interceptions for the Golden Eagles.

Bus Pull Champions • 10 members of the UMC football team and one staff member showed their strength earlier this week as they helped to promote the United Way of Crookston in the inaugural United Way of Crookston/New Flyer of America Community Bus Pull. Smith, Sports Information Director • 218-281-8414 (work) • 319-431-2545 (cell) • smithsd@umn.edu Golden Eagle Season Preview THE NEXT STEP The University of Minnesota Crookston football team ended major droughts last season picking up a pair of NSIC wins over University of Mary and Southwest Minnesota State University, which ended a 39-game conference losing streak. The Golden Eagles are poised to continue to build on last season as they return a plethora of talent from last season and bring in what is thought to be one of the most talented recruiting classes in recent history for UMC. One major hiccup in the offseason was head coach Paul Miller announcing a leave of absence due to health concerns. Don’t expect a ton of changes though, as long-time colleague and friend Mike Fritze, who has nearly 40 years of football coaching experience under his belt including the last 18 as head coach at Apple Valley High School. Fritze was named the St. Paul Pioneer Press Coach of the Year in 2012 after taking a team that went 1-8 in 2011 to an 8-3 mark and the championship in Class 5A, Section 3.

OFFENSE The Golden Eagles enter their second season in the west coast offense run by former Boise State University player Jeff Cheek.

Cheek’s offense was one of the most productive in recent history for the Golden Eagles breaking the top five for many season categories while averaging 304.5 yards per game overall. The Golden Eagles will look to continue to make strides in year two of Cheek’s system. New assistants Mike Clark and Robby Case arrived in the offseason to help out. Clark has worked in the NFL and at the University of Texas and will coach the quarterbacks and wide receivers while Case has made several stops in his young career, most recently at NCAA Division I New Mexico State University. Case will coach the fullbacks and tight ends.

QUARTERBACKS The Golden Eagles will look to replace A.J. Barge at quarterback. Barge transferred from UMC after having one of the strongest season’s of any UMC quarterback in the school’s history in 2012 setting marks for passing yards and a season and completions in a season.

In to replace Barge are two highly regarded high school quarterbacks who will look to make their mark as freshmen in 2013. Nathan Cole (Fr., QB, 6-4 215, Aliso Viejo, Calif.) and Kyle Larson (Fr., QB, 6-1 173, Clayton, Wis.). Cole and Larson have been battling for the job through the preseason and should both see time during the 2013 season. Cole finished his senior season with over 3,420 yards and 37 touchdowns in a very competitive league in Southern California while Larson threw for just under 2,000 yards and had 24 touchdown passes as a senior en route to an All-State Honorable Mention pick.

Providing depth at quarterback will be Jordan Manahan (Jr., QB, 5-11 192, Shuniah, Ontario), who worked with the UMC team during the spring after transferring in from Vermillion C.C. Former Perham basketball and football star Ben Bucholz (R-So., 6-7 233), who has played basketball at both St. Cloud State University and University of Minnesota Duluth and football at UMD will sit out a year after transferring in.

RUNNING BACKS Running Back will be a huge void to fill for the Golden Eagles as gone is two-time All-NSIC North First Team pick Richard Haley, who amassed 2,690 yards rushing in two seasons in the Maroon and Gold.

Stepping in to fill the void is the man who had the job before Haley arrived in 2011, Keith McBride (Sr., RB, 5-11 211). The redshirt senior who was granted a medical redshirt near the end of last season, has rushed for over 1,700 yards in his career but has battled injuries the past two seasons. McBride bulked up and played fullback, blocking for Haley and serving as a receiving threat out of the backfield, especially against U-Mary, against who McBride had nine catches for 130 yards. He will step back into the feature back role in 2013.

Backing up McBride will be Talo Pascal (So., RB, 5-8 173, Arlington, Texas) and Tommy Smith (So., RB, 5-8 162, Naranja, Fla.). Both backs bring a quickness to the position to off-set McBride’s tough running style. Pascal rushed 31 times for 105 yards as a freshman last season for the Golden Eagles. Smith transfers in from Lindsey Wilson College in Kentucky where he rushed 45 times for 237 yards and two touchdowns and was named his conference’s Player of the Week after rushing for a program-record 120 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Andrew Steinfeldt (Sr., RB, 5-10 183), who has moved to the backfield from wide reciever, will also see time as he is one of the team’s best blockers. Billy Kellogg (Fr., RB, 5-10 168, Minneapolis, Minn.) and Dre Person (R-Fr., RB, Detroit, Mich.) will provide depth at the position.

FULLBACKS Two-way player Greg Lofquist (Jr., FB/DL, 6-1 225, Toledo, Ohio) will serve as the team’s top fullback in 2013, as well as play a major role as a defensive end. Lofquist has played fullback each of his first two seasons and will help pave the way again for UMC’s stable of backs in 2013. Competing for time behind Lofquist will be Kevin Williams (R-Jr., FB, 5-7 218, Houston, Texas), who appeared in nine games last season at fullback, at Michael Williams (R-So., FB, 5-7 220, Miami, Fla.), who redshirted last season for UMC. TIGHT ENDS The Golden Eagles will look to three players at tight end in 2013. Jacob Pinder (Jr., TE, 6-4 233, Orlando, Fla.) and Nicholas Exposito (So., TE, 6-4 237, Woodbridge, Va.), will see most of the time early on as Adam Eyton (Sr., TE, 6-4 210, Burnsville, Minn.) recovers from an injury suffered during fall camp. Pinder had three catches for 31 yards as a sophomore but will take on an increased role as a junior while Exposito transfers in from Bluefield College in Virginia where he caught three passes for 19 yards as a freshman. Eyton appeared in 10 games as junior with nine catches for 114 yards.

WIDE RECEIVERS Next to quarterback, the position that will see the most instant impact from newcomers will be wide receiver. Returning is Marcus Cheatham (R-Jr., WR, 5-11 185, Stockton, Calif.), who had a breakout year as a sophomore. Cheatham was second on the team in 2012 with 40 receptions and led the team with 498 yards and eight touchdown grabs. Cheatham’s eight touchdowns in a season ties for second all-time in school history. Josh Ross (So., WR, 6-4 170, Palmdale, Calif.) also returns to the fray but suffered an injury in the offseason and will miss the entire season. Ross led the team with 43 receptions in 2012 for 387 yards and two touchdowns.

Joining Cheatham will be a stable of talented newcomers led by the Hawai’ian trio of Keoni Piceno (Fr., WR, 5-9 170, Wahiawa, Hawai’i), Ekolu Ramos, III (Fr., WR, 5-10 160, Mililani, Hawai’i) and Justin Tago Su’e (Fr., WR, 5-11 175, Ewa Beach, Hawai’i) along with California implant Forrest Dunivin (Fr., WR, 6-4 195, Las Flores, Calif.). Piceno was considered the third best receiver in the state of Hawai’i as a senior en route to 74 catches for over 800 yards. Ramos had over 700 yards receiving as a senior while Tago Su’e, a

Dunivin, a big target for the UMC quarterbacks at 6-4, had over 500 yards receiving as a senior. Also competing for playing time will be Taylor Crassweller (R-Fr., WR, 6-2 170, Regina, Saskatchewan), Myint Maung (R-So., WR, 5-8 160, St. Paul, Minn.) and Valley City State University transfer Ryan Hutton (R-Fr., WR, 5-11 170, Thief River Falls, Minn.). Crassweller and Maung were both members of the team last season.

OFFENSIVE LINE Anchoring the offensive line for the 2013 season will be four players who have racked up a lot of reps on the line over the past few seasons. Sam Smith (Jr., OL, 6-2 290, South St. Paul, Minn.) started every game at center as a sophomore and will again anchor the line as a junior. Returning alongside him are senior guards Jeff Pryor (Sr., OL, 6-3 306, Havana, Ill.) and Kevin Myers (Sr., OL, 6-1 282, Monroe, N.J.). Pryor started two games last season while Myers picked up three starting nods. Both players battled through injuries in 2012. Also returning is tackle Matt Borowicz (Jr., OL, 6-7 301, Stephen, Minn.), a local product who played tight end and offensive line during different points of the 2012 season. Borowicz makes the permanent move to the O-Line after earning five starts last season.

Also looking for time will be a pair of players who were on last year’s team in Josh Hughes (R-Fr., OL, 6-4 236, Weeki Wachee, Fla.) and Joe Machacek (So., OL, 6-2 260, Eagan, Minn.). Hughes is competing for a starting spot at tackle while Machacek will provide depth at center.

Several talented freshmen could be counted on early in their careers for the Golden Eagles as Hawai’i natives Drew McDurmin (Fr., OL, 6-3 280, Ewa Beach, Hawai’i) and Tyman Hayashi (Fr., OL, 6-0 273, Kalihi, Hawai’i) are competing for time, McDurmin at tackle and Hayashi at guard. Freshmen Jake Neubauer (Fr., OL, 6-1 255, Bismarck, N.D.) and John Mitzel (Fr., OL, 6-5 280, Aliso Viejo, Calif.) are also battling to see the field.

Anthony Fish (Jr., OL, 6-1 290, Warroad, Minn.) and Bobby Hitchcock (Fr., OL, 6-1 238, Dellwood, Minn.) will provide depth on the line while battling for playing time.

DEFENSE The major story line on defense will be the move from a conventional 4-3 defense to the 4-2-5 defense which features five defensive backs and two linebackers to better handle spread offenses. The defense will be led by Mark Dufner, who has been the one constant for UMC football over the last decade. Dufner, originally hired as an assistant under Shannon Stassen in 2002, has been integral in keeping the ship together through three coaches in the past three years. Dufner’s efforts were rewarded as he was named defensive coordinator at the start of the season. He takes over for Mike Fritze, who ran the defense in the spring but moved to the interim head coach role due to Paul Miller’s health concerns. The defense looks to improve after allowing an average of 424.5 yards per game last season including 221.8 yards per contest on the ground. Dufner returns from last season’s staff, coaching the linebackers, as does former University of Utah defensive back Sean Knox, who coaches the secondary. The lone newcomer is Levi Bullerman, a former Southwest Minnesota State University player who is very familiar with the lay of the land in the NSIC. DEFENSIVE TACKLES A big story line at defensive tackle is the return of Jonique Andrews (R-So., DL, 6-0 239, Oakland, Calif.), who returns after suffering an injury in the first game of the season last year. Andrews will be back and battling to see the field along with big Tyler Bos (Sr., 6-8 324, Larchwood, Iowa) and A.J. Wallace (R-So., DL, 6-4 256, New Richmond, Wis.). Bos moved over to defensive line late last season from the offensive line and has improved and is expected to be a big contributor as a senior. Wallace also made the move from the O-Line and will also battle to play. Freshmen Jake Christopherson (Fr., DL, 6-1 256, Sturgeon Lake, Minn.) and Sam Hunter (Fr., DL, 6-1 279, San Clemente, Calif.) along with John Simmons (R-So., DL, 5-9 301, Pillager, Minn.) will push for playing time inside. Rene Lawson, Jr. (So., DL, 6-1 271, Arlington, Texas) also has the ability to slide inside as he showed last year.

DEFENSIVE ENDS he Golden Eagles return two starters and a third player who saw considerable playing time last season at the defensive end spot. Drew Selvestra (R-So., DL, 6-3 246, Eagan, Minn.) leads the pack for UMC after appearing in 10 games as a freshman and notching 34 tackles with 8.5 tackles for loss. Lofquist also returns, after being forced to start at tackle last season due to injury. Lofquist started nine games in 2012 and had 35 tackles on the year, leading all defensive linemen. Rene Lawson, Jr. (So., DL, 6-1 271, Arlington, Texas) started four games last season and will be a major contributor in 2013. Lawson had 19 tackles, including one sack and three tackles for loss as a freshman. LaMar Daniels (Jr., 6-3 225, Toledo, Ohio), Anthony Peterson (R-Fr., DL, 6-1 221, Swanville, Minn.), Kevin Ellis (Sr., DL, 6-3 211, Gary, Ind.) and Caleb Banks (Fr., DL, 5-11 230, Stephen, Minn.) will provide depth at the position.

LINEBACKERS Linebacker is perhaps where the Golden Eagles return the most talent on the entire team. The Golden Eagles will only start two linebackers this season in the 4-2-5 but return all three men who started at the position last year. All-NSIC North Honorable Mention pick Ricky Jacobs (Sr., LB, 6-1 232, Junction City, Kan.) leads the fray for the Golden Eagles after starting all 11 games and making 55 tackles as a junior. He also grabbed three interceptions and notched 4.5 tackles for loss. Hometown hero Brody Davidson (Jr., LB, 5-11 215, Crookston, Minn.) also returns after starting all 11 games and making 49 tackles on the year. Andrew “Rock” Hall (R-Jr., LB, 6-0 215, Detroit, Mich.), who lost 50 pounds in the offseason, also returns to the fray after leading the linebacking corps with 60 tackles last season, which was second overall on the team.

Providing depth at linebacker will be freshmen Louie Olmedo (Fr., LB, 5-11 213, San Diego, Calif.), Austin Strukel (R-Fr., LB, 5-11 200, Virginia, Minn.) and Landon Cook (Fr., LB, 5-9 218, San Clemente, Calif.).

CORNERBACKS Senior Paul Webster (DB, 5-11 175, Opa-Locka, Fla.) leads the way at corner for the Golden Eagles after starting seven games after transferring from Chabot Junior College. Webster had 28 tackles and one interception last year. Also expecting to be key contributors are freshman Mychal Traylor (DB, 5-10 161, Cerritos, Calif.) and sophomore Lethzee Calderon (DB, 5-11 175, Eagan, Minn.). Traylor had three interceptions last season while playing high school ball in California. Calderon moved around a bit last year, playing some at wide receiver and defensive back but has settled at defensive back for the Golden Eagles. He appeared in eight games last season for UMC. Providing depth at the position will be Chadron State College (Neb.) transfer Abdilatif Ugas (So., DB, 6-1 161, Lemon Grove, Calif.) and Marzell Mitchell, III (So., DB, 5-7 143, West Palm Beach, Fla.), who redshirted last season after arriving from Florida A&M University.

SAFETIES The Golden Eagles will boast three safeties in the 4-2-5 defense in 2013. Leading the way will be converted cornerback, Tevin Kellum (Sr., DB, 6-0 190, Detroit, Mich.). Kellum started all 11 games last season and had 48 tackles with 2.5 tackles for loss and two interceptions. Joining Kellum in the back of the defense will be Joshua Perea (Sr., DB, 5-10 177, Pico Rivera, Calif.) and Freedom McCullough (Sr., DB, 6-2 211, Los Angeles, Calif.). McCullough started seven games last season while notching 37 tackles and tallying a team-leading five interceptions. Perea has done a little bit of everything for the Golden Eagles, playing quarterback and wide receiver before moving to defensive back in spring practice.

Safety is perhaps the deepest position on the Golden Eagle roster. Nataki Morris (Sr., DB, 5-9 173, Orlando, Fla.) started four games last season. Converted running back Tyler Hansen (Jr., DB, 6-0 216, Morris, Minn.) is competing for a spot as is Upper Iowa University tranfer Marvin Miller, Jr., (R-So., DB, 6-0 198, Royal Palm Beach, Fla.). Freshmen Trent Galkoski (DB, 6-0 194, San Diego, Calif.) and Tanner Walsh (DB, 6-1 170, Gaylord, Minn.) are also in the fray.

SPECIAL TEAMS Mike Maw (Fr., K, 5-7 170, White Bear Lake, Minn.) will handle the three major duties for the Golden Eagles on special teams, kicking off, punting and placekicking. Maw will be backed up by Tago Su’e at kicker and Hansen at punter. Reserve quarterback Manahan will handle the long snapping duties while Wallace will serve as the team’s short snapper. The Golden Eagles are looking at several different options in the return game.

Head Coach Mike Fritze Long-time Minnesota high school head coach Mike Fritze was hired to serve as the team’s defensive coordinator under long-time friend Paul Miller in 2013 after retiring from teaching and high school coaching after the conclusion of the 2012 season.

Fritze had coached for a combined 103 consecutive seasons in three sports (football, boys basketball and track and field) prior to his arrival at the University of Minnesota, Crookston.

He spent the last 18 seasons as the head football coach at Apple Valley High School in Apple Valley, Minn. Fritze succeeded current UMC head coach Paul Miller as the head coach at Apple Valley in 1995. Fritze first arrived at Apple Valley High School in 1981 after five years coaching high school in Wisconsin. He served as an assistant for Coach Miller’s 1986 and 1993 state championship teams before taking over as head coach. Coach Miller came back to serve as Fritze’s offensive coordinator in 2008.

In 2012, Fritze helped lead Apple Valley to an 8-3 record and their first state playoff berth since 1993 when they won the state championship under Coach Miller.

Fritze was head boys basketball coach for six seasons, leading the Eagles to the state tournament twice.

Fritze will spend time living in both Crookston and in the Twin Cities with his wife Kris.

MSU Moorhead Preview Minnesota State University Moorhead comes into the weekend with a 1-5 overall mark. The lone win for the Dragons came in a 47-46 win over Northern State University Oct. 5. MSU Moorhead is in their third year under Steve Laqua, a former offensive coordinator at UMC in 2004.

The Dragons are led by a potent offense that is averaging 32.5 points a game and 461.5 yards per contest. However, the MSU Moorhead defense has struggled as they have conversely given up 47.3 points per game and 504.7 yards defensively per game.

MSU Moorhead’s offense is led by quarterback Jake Hodge, who is 103-of-175 for 1,322 yards with 13 touchdowns and two interceptions. His top target has been Adam Jiskra, who has 39 catches for 596 yards and six touchdowns while Cory Ambrose has 29 receptions for 245 yards. In the backfield, running back Brandon Schell and Hodge have been threats for the Dragons. Schell has 84 rushes for 426 yards with two touchdowns while Hodge has 76 carries for 426 yards and seven touchdowns.

Defensively, linebacker Chris Lee has led the way with 47 tackles and 7.5 tackles for loss while North Dakota State University head coach Craig Bohl’s son Aaron is second on the team with 37 tackles with 2.5 tackles for loss and one sack.
