Recently IN GOLDEN EAGLE ATHLETICS - The University of Minnesota Crookston women’s basketball team ended their 2013-14 home slate last weekend with a split against two major opponents from the NSIC South. The Golden Eagles picked up a big win over Concordia University, St. Paul Friday but fell to No. 21 Minnesota State University, Mankato Saturday. The game against Concordia came down to a shot in the final seconds that fell for Alexa Thielman (So., G, Buffalo, Minn./Health Science). UMC was paced by 12 points and 13 rebounds from Katrina Moenkedick (So., F, Perham, Minn./Early Childhood Education) in the win. In addition, Cienna Walker (Jr., G, Ajax, Ontario/Marketing) added 12 points. The Golden Eagles would win the game 59-58. Against Minnesota State, the Golden Eagles fell 69-57. UMC was paced by 11 points from Thielman in the loss. Saturday’s game was Senior Day for the Golden Eagles as lone senior Jacy Christenson (G, Shoreview, Minn./Natural Resources) played her final game at Lysaker Gymnasium. - University of Minnesota Crookston hunt seat equestrian rider Emily Steeley (So., Portsmouth, R.I.), advanced to the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Zones on individual merit after winning the regional title for Open Equitation Over Fences at theIHSA Regionals last weekend. Steeley and the entire Hunt Seat Equestrian team will compete for a chance to advance to Nationals as a team at the IHSA Zone Championships April 13 in Madison, Wis. The UMC team won the IHSA Regional Championship after completing the regular season with the most points. In addition to advancing to IHSA Zones for Open Equitation Over Fences, Steeley has already won the Cacchione Cup for Zone 7, Region 3 as the High Point Rider in the Open Equitation division that wins the most numbers of points over the regular season. Steeley is the first UMC rider to ever win the Cacchione Cup for the region. Steeley will now advance to compete against riders from across the nation at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Nationals May 9-11 in Harrisburg, Pa. - The University of Minnesota Crookston football team has announced the additions of four more student-athletes to National Letters of Intent since National Signing Day February 5. Their total for the 2014 recruiting class currently sits at 32 student-athletes who have signed either NLI’s, Offers of Admission or Transfer Agreements. The additions were Javon Hering (P, 5-9 220, Eagan, Minn./Eastview H.S.), Alex Herrada (DB, 5-10 190, Santee, Calif./West Hills H.S.), Damarkus Jones (DB, 5-11 205, Tarpon Springs, Fla./Tarpon Springs H.S.) and Jearld McGlothin (LB, 6-0 230, Arlington, Texas/Arlington H.S.). The Golden Eagles have signed 19 student-athletes from either Minnesota or North Dakota. - The UMC men’s basketball team fell 82-66 to Concordia-St. Paul Friday and 82-55 to Minnesota State Saturday. The Golden Eagles were led by Derrick Redd, Jr. (So., G, Menifee, Calif./Sports and Rec Management), who had 14 points against Concordia. Versus Minnesota State, UMC was paced by 18 points from Brandon Burns (Sr., F, Baton Rouge, La./Sports and Rec Management) and 15 points from Giorgi Koguashvili (Jr., G, Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia/Ag Business). The game was the final home game for Burns and Ashton Harrell (Sr., G, Houston, Texas/Sports and Rec Management) - The UMC tennis team has gone 1-2 in the last two weekends of play, as they are now 1-4 overall on the season. The Golden Eagles big win of the season thus far came over University of Minnesota Duluth Feb. 8. The Golden Eagles fell last weekend to Minnesota State University and the previous weekend to Minnesota State University Moorhead. UMC has been led so far by Catherine Brown (So., Powell Butte, Ore.), who is 2-3 overall in singles this season and 2-3 when paired with Katelyn Johnson (Sr., Monticello, Minn.) in doubles. - The Minnesota Crookston baseball team opened up the 2014 season by going 0-4 against a very tough Missouri Southern State University baseball team on the road in Joplin, Mo. The Golden Eagles were led in the opening weekend by the bat of Ryan Haggstrom (So., C/1B/P, Apple Valley, Minn.), who went 6-for-13 with two runs scored and one RBI.

UMC TEAMBACKERS STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK For the Week of Feb. 13 - 19

- Cienna Walker (Jr., Women’s Basketball, Ajax, Ontario) continued her impressive play as of late for the Golden Eagles off of the bench. The junior made an impact scoring the ball, as well as on the glass, averaging 9.5 points and 6.5 rebounds in games against Concordia-St. Paul and Minnesota State. Walker played a major part in the upset win of the Golden Bears from Concordia with 12 points and five rebounds. Against Minnesota State, Walker added seven points and eight rebounds.

- Ryan Haggstrom (So., Baseball, Apple Valley, Minn.) opened the 2014 season with an impressive batting performance on the road against Missouri Southern. Haggstrom was 6-of-13 for the weekend with two runs scored and one RBI. Haggstrom had one double on the weekend, and had a .538 slugging percentage and .467 on-base percentage.

For the Week of Feb. 6 - 12

- Katrina Moenkedick (So., Women’s Basketball, Perham, Minn.) averaged a double-double of 15.5 points and 11 rebounds as she put up one of her best weekends of the season for Minnesota Crookston. Moenkedick has been a force this season for the Golden Eagles, scoring in double figures in all but one game (nine points in the other) this season. Moenkedick had a double-double of 21 points and 12 rebounds on 7-of-18 shooting from the field in a loss to University of Mary Friday. She was 7-of-8 from the charity stripe against the Marauders. Saturday, Moenkedick aided an entire team effort in a huge upset victory of the No. 2 team in the NSIC North Minot State University 74-62. Moenkedick had another double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds to help the Golden Eagles take down the Beavers. Moenkedick was 5-of-12 from the field.

- Catherine Brown (So., Women’s Tennis, Powell Butte, Ore..), had a major weekend for the Golden Eagles with a pair of doubles wins and a pair of singles wins. Brown won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles over Drew DeCorsey of Minnesota Duluth and paired with Katelyn Johnson at No. 1 doubles to defeat Kara Saemann and Delaney Dobbs, 8-3. She was instrumental in helping the Golden Eagles capture a 5-4 win over the Bulldogs. Sunday, Brown won her match at No. 2 singles and again paired with Johnson for a win at No. 1 doubles in a 7-2 loss to MSU Moorhead.

- Giorgi Koguashvili (Jr., Men’s Basketball, Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia), continued his impressive play as of late for the Golden Eagles, averaging 12.5 points per game in a pair of losses to University of Mary and Minot State University. Koguashvili has seen his minutes increase and his production increase after averaging just 3.1 points per game in the first 10 games he appeared in. In the last seven, he is averaging 9.9 points per game. Koguashvili was 4-of-7 from the field with 15 points and three assists against U-Mary Friday. Against Minot State, he added 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting with two assists and one steal.
