Golden Eagle Quick Hits Redd Stepping Things Up Derrick Redd (So., G, Menifee, Calif./Sports and Rec Management) has made a lot of improvement this season and even made his first career start against Winona State Jan. 4. Redd comes into this weekend averaging 8.3 points per game. Redd led the Golden Eagles with an average of 13 points per game last weekend against Winona State and Upper Iowa. Against the Warriors, he got the Golden Eagles out of the gate strong, scoring nine of the first 11 points, as he finished with 14 for the game. Redd had 12 points against Upper Iowa Friday. The Golden Eagles will need Redd to continue to produce in the absence of Ashton Harrell (Sr., G, Houston, Texas/Sports and Rec Management), who will most likely miss the rest of the season due to injury.
The Old Man In The Pack 28-year old John Hughes (So., F, Tualatin, Ore./Management) has started the last four games for the Golden Eagles. The sophomore has had an added impact during the last four games, averaging 7.5 points and 4.5 rebounds for Minnesota Crookston. Hughes’ aggressive style and hard work have paid dividends this season for the Golden Eagles. He had a season-high 12 boards in a non-conference game against University of Jamestown earlier this season, and just grabbed eight boards last weekend against Winona State. His season high in the scoring column came with nine points against MSU Moorhead Dec. 14. Hughes is in his second season back playing competitive basketball after working various jobs for nearly 10 years before deciding to pursue his basketball dream.
Looking To Get Back On A Winning Track The University of Minnesota Crookston men’s basketball team will look to get back on a winning track this weekend against Wayne State College and Augustana College. The Golden Eagles have lost their last six games after picking up an 87-85 win over University of Minnesota Duluth Dec. 6. Minnesota Crookston has shown signs against Minnesota State University Moorhead, Northern State University and Winona State University, but hasn’t been able to get over the hump yet. The Golden Eagles however already have as many wins as they did last season.
Assist Man UMC junior point guard Kevin Larson (New Ulm, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) has made an instant impact after transferring from Iowa Lakes Community College. Larson is among the top assist men in the NSIC this season, averaging 4.58 assists this season, which is second in the conference. Larson tallied a season-high seven assists on two occasions this season ,against University of Minnesota Duluth Dec. 6 and against Upper Iowa last weekend. He has an assist/turnover ratio of 1.96, which is currently fifth in the league.
