Golden Eagle Quick Hits Find Harrell The University of Minnesota Crookston is a better team when senior guard Ashton Harrell (G, Houston, Texas/Sports and Rec Management) is on, as evidenced by the Minnesota Duluth game. Harrell poured in a career-high 34 points on 9-of-13 shooting and 4-of-4 from three. Harrell seemed like he couldn’t miss on the game as he helped the Golden Eagles to a crucial NSIC win over UMD. Getting The First NSIC Win Last year it took until the last weekend for UMC to get their first NSIC win, the Golden Eagles got their first NSIC win out of the way this season as they took down Minnesota Duluth in the second weekend of the season. The Golden Eagles will look to have continued success in the league as they play Northern State and Minnesota State Moorhead this weekend. Dishing It Out Junior point guard Kevin Larson (New Ulm, Minn./Sports and Rec Management) has been a great leader from his position so far this season, after transferring from Iowa Lakes Community College. Larson is averaging 4.4 assists per game this season. He had a huge game with seven assists in the win against Minnesota Duluth last Friday. Larson added 10 points in that game, for perhaps his best game so far in the Golden Eagle uniform. Against St. Cloud State, Larson had five assists. Newcomers Several newcomers have played major roles for the Golden Eagles this season. Larson and Tyler West, Jr. (Jr., F, Portland, Ore./Communications) have started all seven games for UMC this season. Larson comes in averaging 4.6 points, 3.1 rebounds and 4.4 assists while West is averaging 9.6 points and 4.7 rebounds. In addition, newcomer Lucas Reller (Jr., Lead, S.D.) has started three games this season and is averaging 3.7 points and 2.8 rebounds. Off the bench, sophomore John Hughes (F, Tualatin, Ore./Management) comes in averaging 3.9 points and 4.3 rebounds. Seeing The Court Freshmen Konner Goettsche (F, Plymouth, Minn.) and Austin Dierks (F, Chokio, Minn.) saw their first action as Golden Eagles last weekend against St. Cloud State. Goettsche had battled injuries early on in the season while Dierks just hadn’t seen the court yet. Dierks tallied four points and two rebounds in just three minutes against the Huskies.

Head Coach Jeff Oseth Jeff Oseth begins his 12th year as the University of Minnesota Crookston head men’s basketball coach. Entering the 2013-14 campaign, he is the third-longest tenured head coach in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference behind Kevin Schlagel (16 years) at St. Cloud State University and Mike Leaf and Winona State University (15 years). Oseth is the all-time winningest coach at the NCAA Division II level in UMC men’s basketball history. Oseth took over as the interim head men’s basketball coach in 2002-2003. His first win came that year against nationally ranked University of North Dakota whom at the time had the 2003 NCAA Division II National Player of the Year. This year marks Oseth’s 20th year as a collegiate coach. He has been involved in the NSIC for 18 years as a player, assistant coach and now head coach. During Oseth’s tenure he has coached nine All-Conference players, four All-Americans and two NSIC Freshmen of the Year players. He helped produce All-American and NCAA II leading scorer Brett Beeson while at Minnesota State University Moorhead and the All-Time NSIC leading scorer Joe Hasz at UMC. A former high school valedictorian, Coach Oseth understands the importance of education. As the head coach of the Golden Eagles, his program has graduated 56 out of 59 players who have finished up their eligibility for a 95% graduation rate. In addition, 2013 graduate Almir Krdzalic earned the NCAA Division II Degree Completion Awardgiven to an outstanding student-athlete in the classroom who has exhausted their eligibility but is still working to complete their degree. Coach Oseth has forged a reputation as a dedicated worker with an intense competitive drive. He has worked hard molding the University of Minnesota Crookston men’s basketball program into one that is competitive in the NSIC. coach Oseth’s teams have pulled several upsets over nationally ranked teams including an upset of No. 22 St. Cloud State in 2013. “We compete in the best D2 men’s basketball conference in the country. There have been many challenges and obstacles along the way in building our program, but all of those things have made us a better basketball program and better coaches. I am looking forward to the new challenges that lie ahead as we move our program into the future.” Coach Oseth’s ties to the University of Minnesota Crookston run deep. He played for UMC from 1990-1992 where he was a two time All-Northern Division player, Northern Division Tournament MVP, Minnesota Conference All-Academic team, and was co-captain of a team that was ranked third offensively at the NJCAA Division I level. Coach Oseth transferred to Minnesota State University Moorhead where he was a two-year letter winner and was voted the most dedicated player by his teammates both of his years there. Jeff earned the leadership award as a senior when he helped lead the Dragons to a 19 win season and one game shy of the national tournament. Coach Oseth is a native of McIntosh, Minn., where he had an outstanding prep career at WinE-Mac High School. He was a three-time All-Conference selection, a member of the Minnesota 1,000 point club, nominated to the Minnesota All-Star Team and was the Region’s Most Valuable Player. Coach Oseth earned his Bachelor of Science Degree from Minnesota State University Moorhead. He earned a Masters of Education Degree in Human Resource Development from the University of Minnesota.
