- University of Minnesota Crookston women’s basketball player Alexa Thielman (Jr., G, Buffalo, Minn./Health Science) was named Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) North Division Player of the Week for her outstanding performance in UMC’s sweep of Minnesota State University, Mankato and Concordia University-St. Paul. Thielman averaged 22 points as the Golden Eagles moved to 5-1 in NSIC play this New Year. Thielman was 13-of-26 from the field for 50 percent and 7-of-11 from beyond the arc for 63.6 percent. In addition, she was 11-of-12 from the charity stripe. Thielman was instrumental in UMC’s 75-70 overtime win over Minnesota State, scoring 32 points on 10-of-19 shooting from the field, 5-of-6 from beyond the arc and 7-of-8 from the charity stripe. Thielman scored 27 points in the second half and overtime as UMC overcame a 15-point deficit to take down the Mavericks. The Golden Eagles are 8-8 (7-5 NSIC) and currently are in a tie for second place in the NSIC North with Minnesota State University Moorhead. - The UMC men’s basketball team fell in a pair of games to Concordia University-St. Paul and No. 21 Minnesota State University, Mankato. The Golden Eagles were led by 15 points apiece from Derrick Redd, Jr. (Jr., G, Menifee, Calif.) and Kevin Larson (Sr., G, New Ulm, Minn.) in Friday’s loss to the Golden Eagles. Against the Mavericks, Tim Lubke (Sr., G, St. Paul, Minn.) had 11 points, while Larson chipped in 10. The Golden Eagles are 6-10 (4-8 NSIC) and are currently in a tie for fifth place in the NSIC North with Minot State University. -The University of Minnesota Crookston had nine student-athletes recognized as recipients of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Myles Brand All-Academic with Distinction Award as announced the NSIC Commissioner Erin Lind. The baseball team was the most recognized sport for UMC with Jesse Jennings (Sr., OF, Robbinsdale, Minn./Criminal Justice), Travis Magdzas (Sr., DH, Duluth, Minn./Criminal Justice) and Richie Navratil (Sr., P, Blansko, Czech Republic/Management) receiving the award. Women’s basketball had two student-athletes honored with Kenzie Church (Sr., F, Fairmount, N.D./Management) and Ashley Martell (Sr., G, Somerset, Wis./Health Science) earning the award. Soccer player Cayla Bendel (Sr., Lakeville, Minn./Natural Resources), men’s golfer Matt Bjorgo (Sr., Crookston, Minn./Natural Resources), football player Matt Borowicz (Sr., Stephen, Minn./Health Science) and volleyball player Brittany Looker (Sr., Rochester, Minn./Health Science) received the honor. The Golden Eagles nine student-athletes were up from four last year. UMC had the fourth-most student-athletes along with Upper Iowa University, behind only Winona State University, University of Sioux Falls and Minnesota State University, Mankato. The honor, named for the late NCAA President Dr. Myles Brand, is bestowed to senior NSIC student-athletes who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.75 or higher, are exhausting their eligibility and are on track to graduate. Each student-athlete will be recognized by the NSIC with a certificate of achievement and a wrist watch. Furthermore, each institution is highly encouraged to have these student-athletes be publicly recognized at a home athletic event. A total of 111 student-athletes from the NSIC’s 16 institutions will receive the award in its sixth year.
