Recently IN GOLDEN EAGLE ATHLETICS - UMC women’s basketball coach Mike Roysland was named NSIC Coach of the Year for his role in taking the Golden Eagles to a 14-14 mark (12-10 NSIC), one of the best in program history. Roysland’s squad was just two wins shy of the school record and was the first team to host a home NSIC tournament playoff game. In addition, he coached UMC players Alexa Thielman (Jr., G, Buffalo, Minn./ Health Science) and Katrina Moenkedick (Jr., F, Perham, Minn./Applied Studies) to All-NSIC First Team accolades, the first teammates in school history to earn First Team honors. In addition, Emily Gruber (Fr., F/C, Monticello, Minn.) was named to the NSIC All-Freshman team. - The UMC women’s basketball team hosted their first playoff game in school history, playing Concordia-St. Paul Wed., Feb. 25 at Lysaker Gymnasium. The Golden Eagles played in front of a raucus crowd and were able to come away with a thrilling victory as Alexa Thielman scored her 1,000th and 1,001st points to send UMC to the quarterfinals of the NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament. The Golden Eagles would end up losing in the quarterfinals to Minnesota State University, Mankato, but hope to find their way back to the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D. next season. - UMC baseball player Ethan Mushitz (Fr., IF, East Grand Forks, Minn./Criminal Justice) was named NSIC Player of the Week after going 8-of-17 for a .471 batting average with six runs scored and five RBI’s against Dickinson State in Miles City, Mont. last weekend. Mushitz earned five walks, had three stolen bases and three doubles on the weekend. - The UMC baseball team went 2-3 on the weekend against Dickinson State, with Jarad Nelson (Jr., RHP, Karlstad, Minn./Education) and Colt Trebesch (Jr., IF/RHP, Glencoe, Minn./Elementary Education) each earning wins for the Golden Eagles. In the 14-9 win Friday, UMC was led by a grand slam from Kenny Perez (Jr., DH/1B, Orlando, Fla./Health Science). In Saturday’s 10-4 victory, Mushitz was 3-of-5 with one run scored and three RBI’s. - The UMC softball team opened the 2015 slate, their first under Don Stopa, with four games in West St. Paul, Minn. The Golden Eagles fell 3-1 and 6-0 to Minot State University, 11-2 to Bemidji State University and 9-6 to Minnesota State University Moorhead. They have been led so far by Allison Foley (Jr., IF, Lockport, Ill./Accounting), who is hitting .333 with two runs scored. - The Golden Eagle tennis team played three matches last weekend in Bemidji, Minn. The Golden Eagles fell 8-1 to University of Sioux Falls led by Catherine Brown (Jr., Powell Butte, Ore./Animal Science) win at No. 1 singles. UMC fell 9-0 to Augustana College (S.D.) and 9-0 to Bemidji State University.

UMC TEAMBACKERS STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK For the Week of Feb. 26 - March 4

- Ethan Mushitz (Fr., Baseball, East Grand Forks, Minn..) went 8-for-17 with six runs scored and five RBI’s in five games against Dickinson State in Miles City, Mont. The freshman hit .471 for the weekend and is off to a fantastic start to his first season in the Maroon and Gold. Mushitz had five walks, three stolen bases and three doubles on the weekend.

- Katrina Moenkedick (Jr., Women’s Basketball, Perham, Minn.) averaged 14 points and 9.5 rebounds for the Golden Eagles as they played two games in the NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament last week with a win over Concordia University-St. Paul in their first-ever time hosting a home playoff game. The Golden Eagles also played Saturday with a loss to Minnesota State University, Mankato in the quarterfinals of the tournament. Moenkedick had 12 points and nine rebounds on Wednesday against the Golden Eagles. She was 5-of-11 from the field and added two assists and three steals. Saturday, Moenkedick had a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds. The UMC junior also became the third player in program history to score 1,000 points and 500 rebounds as she surpassed the rebound total Saturday against the Mavericks.

For the Week of Feb. 19 - 25

- Nolan Wahlberg (Jr., Baseball, Blaine, Minn.) picked up his first win in the Maroon and Gold and helped deliver Head Coach Steve Gust his first win with the Golden Eagles putting together a strong performance against Bethany College (Kan.) Last Friday. Wahlberg went eight innings and pitched a four-hitter. Wahlberg would pitch a perfect game through the first four innings. He would end the game, giving up just one earned run on four hits with three walks. Wahlberg is in his first season with Minnesota Crookston.

- Ebony Livingston (Sr., Women’s Baskebtall, Minneapolis, Minn.) averaged 14 points, 3 rebounds and 3.5 assists as Minnesota Crookston picked up a split on the weekend in order to earn the three-seed and secure home court for the first round of the NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament, marking the first time UMC has earned an NSIC playoff game. Livingston was crucial in both games. The senior had 12 points, two rebounds and three assists against Northern State Friday night on 4-of-6 shooting from the field and 3-of-3 from the free-throw line. Against MSU Moorhead, Livingston came up big, helping the Golden Eagles to a win over MSU Moorhead. She was 2-of-7 from the field but was huge from the charity stripe, connecting on 12-of-12 from the charity stripe. Livingston would go 15-of-15 from the free-throw line. She is one of the nation’s top free throw shooters, hitting 92.0 percent of her shots this season.
