Golden Eagle Quick Hits Martell Starting To Feel It Ashley Martell (Jr., G, Somerset, Wis./Health Science) has struggled at times this season to find her shot, but has had success in the past two games for the Golden Eagles. Martell is averaging 11 points per game in the past two for UMC. She was crucial in the win against Southwest Minnesota State, lighting the fire for the Golden Eagles with three early treys in the second half. Martell was 3-of-7 from the field and 2-of-6 from beyond the arc against Sioux Falls Friday and was 4-of-7 from beyond the arc in the win Saturday over the Mustangs. Martell has had a strong overall year shooting the three ball but it hasn’t always translated into a large amount of points. The junior is shooting 43.5 percent from three this season and averaging 1.5 made treys per game. Road Warriors The Golden Eagles finally snapped their winless streak in NSIC games on the road this season as they came away with a crucial 76-69 win over Southwest Minnesota State University last Saturday. Minnesota Crookston had a huge second half led by seven three-pointers. UMC had lost eight games away from Lysaker Gymnasium prior to Saturday’s victory over the Mustangs. UMC had been in almost every road game down the stretch but had been unable to close out a win. The Golden Eagles lost those eight games by an average of 9.4 points. Good To Be Back Home Despite a big win for the Golden Eagles on Saturday against Southwest Minnesota State University, it is good to be back home where UMC is 7-4 this season. Lysaker Gymnasium has been very friendly to the Golden Eagles as they have picked up NSIC wins over Bemidji State University, Upper Iowa University, Winona State University and Minnesota State University Moorhead at home this season. They will look to have a strong showing during this four-game home stand at Lysaker Gymnasium. The Golden Eagles went 1-3 in their previous four games, all played on the road. Moenkedick’s Streak Ends University of Minnesota Crookston sophomore forward Katrina Moenkedick (So., F, Perham, Minn./Early Childhood Education) had her streak of double-figure scoring snapped Friday against University of Sioux Falls as she was held to nine points against the Cougars. Moenkedick had scored in double figures in the previous 18 games. However, Moenkedick did bounce right back and tally 13 points on the road against Southwest Minnesota State in a win for the Golden Eagles Saturday, hopefully starting a new streak.
