Golden Eagle Quick Hits Filling The Void Coming into the season, the two biggest voids the Golden Eagles had to fill were from the graduation of 1,000 point scorer Brittani Wiese at guard and from all-time rebounding leader Laurie Tyson in the post. The Golden Eagles have done a good job at answering both questions so far this year in different ways. At guard, Alexa Thielman (So., G, Buffalo, MInn./Health Science) has had a major part in filling the void of Wiese. Thielman has had two games scoring over 20 this season, including a career-high 30 points in a win against Bemidji State. Thielman comes in averaging 15.3 points per game, which currently leads the team. Thielman had a strong freshman campaign but has improved leaps and bounds so far through the first seven games of her sophomore season. Thielman averaged 6.2 points and 2.6 rebounds as a freshman. In the rebounding department, the Golden Eagles have done things by committee this season but have done a decent job in replacing Tyson’s 7.6 boards per game. UMC ended last season avaraging 39.3 rebounds per game and their leading rebounder was Wiese with 4.3 boards per game. This season, UMC is averaging 39.9 rebounds per contest with Katrina Moenkedick (So., F, Perham, Minn./Early Childhood Education) averaging 6.6 rebounds per game and Thielman averaging 6.0 boards per game. Coming Back From A Pair of Losses The Golden Eagles will look to rebound from a tough weekend at home last time out as they fell to St. Cloud State University and University of Minnesota Duluth. Hit The Road Jack! The University of Minnesota Crookston has had the luxury of playing their first seven games of the year in the friendly confines of Lysaker Gymnasium, this weekend the Golden Eagles will hit the road for the first time this season as they head to Northern State University and Minnesota State University Moorhead. The Golden Eagles will close the 2013 calendar year with three road affairs as they face the Wolves, Dragons and Bemidji State University. Sophomore Class The Golden Eagle sophomore class has played a big role in their success this season, thus far. Moenkedick and Thielman, both sophomores, lead the Golden Eagles in scoring with 15.3 points and 14.6 points per game, respectively. Redshirt sophomore Jaya Perkins (G, Lakeville, Minn./Criminal Justice) has also played a big role averaging 7.4 points, while Christine Thorn (G, St. Michael, Minn./Early Childhood Education) comes in averaging 5.7 points per game and Erika McRoberts (F, Byron, Minn./Health Science) comes in averaging 4.6 points per game.

Head Coach Mike Roysland Mike Roysland enters his seventh year leading the University of Minnesota Crookston women’s basketball team heading into the 2013-14 season. Roysland has accumulated 65 wins in his first six seasons leading the Golden Eagle program. During his tenure, he has seen five players (Jamie Zelinksy, Brittani Wiese, Megan Eul, Bri Zabel and Katrina Moenkedick) earn eight all-conference awards. Jamie Zelinsky, the all-time scoring leader at UMC was Coach Roysland’s first All-NSIC First Team pick following the 2010-11 season, which was his strongest as the head coach of the UMC program as they picked up 13 wins on the season. Moenkedick earned All-Freshman honors during the 2013-14 campaign. Coach Roysland was a highly accomplished high school coach prior to his hiring by Stephanie Helgeson heading into the 2007-08 campaign. Roysland brought to the table 42 combined years of head coaching experience to the Golden Eagle Women’s Basketball program.
