Golden Eagle Quick Hits Three-Point Machine At times this season, sophomore guard Alexa Thielman (Buffalo, Minn./Health Science) has been a three-point machine. Thielman has had six games with five or more threes in a game including three with six treys, hitting that mark against St. Cloud State University Dec. 7, Bemidji State University Nov. 30 and Augustana College Jan. 11. Six threes in a game is the school record, tying the mark which had been accomplished by four other players. She has shot 45.5 percent from long distance on the season and is currently just 14 threes shy of Amy Kuznia’s mark of 79 for treys in a season. Thielman currently has 65. Doubling It Up Katrina Moenkedick (So., F, Perham, Minn./Early Childhood Education) has scored in double-figures for the Golden Eagles in 24 of 26 games this season, proving her consistency throughout the season. In one of the games she had nine and the other four. In addition, Moenkedick has had six games with over 20 points this season, including a career-high 30 points against Upper Iowa University Jan. 3. Moenkedick has also improved a ton on the boards this season, tallying six games with 10 or more rebounds which accounted for six games with double-doubles. Moenkedick will look to continue her consistency as she heads into the conference tournament and then into her junior season. Terror On The Block Megan Taylor (R-Fr., C, Estelline, S.D./Animal Science) has become a defensive presence for the Golden Eagles in recent weeks as she has continued to develop as a player. Taylor has tallied two blocks in three of the last nine games and has tallied at least one block in three of the other games. Taylor has developed overall as a player in recent weeks as well, averaging 4.2 points and 2.7 rebounds per game, after averaging just 1.4 points and 1.8 rebounds as of Jan. 24. Taylor’s best game came with eight ponts, five rebounds and two blocks in a win over Minot State University Feb. 8. In addition, she had seven points and seven rebounds against Minnesota State Feb. 15. The Future Is Bright The Golden Eagles showed improvement during the 2013-14 regular season from last season, winning two more games than last year, but one thing is apparent, the future is bright. Minnesota Crookston returns 13 players to next year’s roster including all five starters and their two leading scorers Alexa Thielman (So., G, Buffalo, Minn./Health Science) and Katrina Moenkedick (So., F, Perham, Minn./Early Childhood Education). In fact, 66 percent of UMC’s offense comes from players that are currently sophomores and have two more years of eligibility remaining.
