FY20-21 Education Impact of Philanthropy

Fiscal Year 2020-2021

I M PA C T O F P H I L A N T H R O P Y We’re extremely proud of the national reputation for excellence in teaching, research and service our college has built. We’re in a strong position, but we have more work to do. I believe our focus on advancing diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice in the education field will continue to enhance our leadership position in the coming years.

I teach future teachers and model for them the practices I hope they adopt as educators. I emphasize culturally relevant and sustaining teaching practices and critical pedagogies. I encourage discussion and student inquiry. Working with future teachers has been rewarding and invigorating, and I cherish that component of my work. graduate education program in the state of California

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS • Launched the Center for Achieving Black Wellness and AntiRacist Education to help close the education and wellness gap among individuals of African descent. Created in the wake of the pandemic of anti-Black injustice that gripped the nation in 2020, the Center will be home to academic scholarship, service, and professional development that addresses and disrupts antiBlackness and racism among educators and wellness providers. • SDSU College of Education faculty members garnered more than $18.7 million in research funding during the 2020-21 Academic Year. • The Department of Dual Language and English Learner Education is the only autonomous bilingual education program in California, and has recently grown into the state’s largest producer of bilingual teachers.

• All three recipients of the San Diego County Office of Education’s 2021 School Counselors of the Year award — Ann Pierce, Bonnie Hayman and Cherryl Baker — received their training in master’s programs in SDSU’s Department of Counseling and School Psychology. • The U.S. Department of Education Rehabilitation Services Administration (RSA) awarded a $16.5 million grant to further SDSU’s national leadership in vocational rehabilitation. The funding will support a new center, housed in COE’s Interwork Institute, that will provide quality management to the 78 public agencies nationwide that connect people with disabilities to career resources. • Dr. Margarita Machado-Casas, chair of SDSU’s Department of Dual Language and English Learner Education, was tapped by the Biden-Harris presidential transition team to help develop policy recommendations for advancing equity in the education workforce. She served on the Diversity Education Workforce subcommittee of the Biden-Harris National Education Policy Committee.
