Fiscal Year 2020-2021

I M PA C T O F P H I L A N T H R O P Y In March 2020, SDSU entered an unprecedented time of learning how to navigate a global pandemic and how to exist in a virtual space. Determined to remain optimistic and laser-focused on providing great educational and artistic opportunities for our students, faculty, staff, and for the community-at-large, colleagues in PSFA found new ways to teach, perform, exhibit, study, and research. With the incredible support of our amazing donors, our college has continued to flourish. With donor support, our students have received much-needed scholarships, programs have received critical technologies, research has continued to deepen, and a new Performing Arts District has taken shape. We cannot thank our donors enough! With enormous gratitude, Peggy Shannon, PhD. Dean, College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts

“ I am beyond grateful to receive the Julia Stewart Endowed Scholarship. The support I’ve received from San Diego State, and specifically from this scholarship, has been incredible. I wouldn’t have been able to pursue higher education without this type of assistance from the university, it’s an honor to be a recipient.” - Mary Ainsworth Mary Ainsworth starts her fourth year as a communication major, with a minor in Digital & Social Media Studies. She believes communication is one of the single most important skills an individual needs when entering the workforce.

The school is currently launching a new exhibition program and partnership project with leading local galleries and museums. This partnership project will feature collaboration between the SDSU School of Art and Design, Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD), Bread & Salt Gallery, and Art Produce. Over the past year, the School of Art and Design has seamlessly transitioned to virtual exhibitions such as the “Amplify: Guest Artist” series event on January 28th with Melinda Beck, a renowned illustrator, animator, and graphic designer.

SDSU’s School of Communication was founded in 1927 and is celebrating 90 years of excellence in Communication scholarship and teaching. We offer two undergraduate majors – one in communication and one in health communication, in addition to a communication minor. Our program in health communication is the first undergraduate major of its kind in the State of California. Our M.A. program is consistently rated by Eduniversal as one of the top 10 communication programs in the United States and in the world. Our faculty’s research is comparable to that of a top doctoral program, but our faculty focus on the success of our undergraduate and graduate students.

L. Robert Payne School of Hospitality & Tourism Management is developing trailblazers. Rooted in an exemplary partnership – at home and internationally – between academia and industry, we offer the perfect educational emphasis that allows our students to flourish professionally. With a 99 percent post-graduation job placement rate, we are proud to call ourselves the most personalized school of its kind in developing hospitality and tourism leaders.

The School of Journalism and Media Studies offers nationally accredited programs that prepare undergraduate students for careers in advertising, journalism, public relations, and media. Our undergraduate programs in advertising, journalism, and public relations are accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications, putting us among the elite 25 percent of journalism schools nationwide that hold this specialized accreditation. Our graduate students enhance their careers in mass communication and in learning design and technology, and many graduate students go on to pursue their doctorates.

The School of Music and Dance provides specialized instruction and career development opportunities for students by creating a dynamic artistic environment based on the unique strengths and knowledge of our accomplished faculty. We emphasize high quality performance experiences for students, professional engagement and applied practical training in music and dance. Each student’s career aspirations are advanced under the supervision of a supportive and skilled faculty.

The School of Public Affairs is dedicated to supplying the region with well-educated, diverse, ethical graduates. We both educate and train undergraduate and graduate students in specific skills, techniques and knowledge encouraging analytical and critical thinking about public and private sectors. Our aim is to prepare students for the challenges of changing political and social environments. We are dedicated to advancing the commitment to public service and to providing applied scholarship designed to address emerging border and regional issues. Within the School of Theater, Television and Film, there are various majors for students to choose from. Students interested in a Bachelor of Science in Television, Film, and New Media can choose an emphasis in production or critical studies. For those students interested in the theatre program, they are able to pursue a Bachelor of the Arts in General Theatre Arts or an emphasis in performance, youth theatre, or design and technology. Students can also minor in television, film, and new media, or theatre
