SDSU SCHOOL OF THEATRE, TELEVISION, AND FILM
PLAYBILL
WELCOME Welcome to the Virtual production of Cloud 9. This production has been made possible due to the rugged determination of the production crew, cast and director. Once again at the last moments they pivoted from a plan to record an on-stage version, to a purely distanced and virtual production. As new mutations of the COVID 19 virus cause the tightening of CDC regulations, this team determined that quisling with the COVID necrosis, and folding this production is not a viable option. Consequently, with less than a week they reorganized a bivouac of cast and crew, to offer us the Cloud 9 production we are about to enjoy today. The School of Theatre, Television, and Film, offers immense appreciation to the cast and crew for overcoming the numerous obstacles. Thank you for supporting our work. It means a lot to us.
Niyi Coker, Jr., Director School of Theatre, Television, and Film

DIRECTOR’S NOTE Directing this production has been a thrilling journey. Cloud 9 was chosen as part of the season pre-pandemic, and it has been an adventure with my team of incredible graduate and undergraduate designers, stage managers, and actors on how we adapt to the now. As a director, I am interested in interdisciplinary forms of performance and challenging our expectations of what theatre can be. Although we are unable to fill a theatre space with people at this time, we as artists continue to live in our authenticity and make art no matter what. Cloud 9 is a play of the past, but it is forcing us to reckon with our present. I am finding myself wanting live theatre, a shared space with my community, a world of peaceful coexistence, and all people living their truth with authenticity and acceptance, and the reality of that hope is quite complex. Only we have control of how we react to the changing world around us and hopefully this play will ignite questions of how living our truth directly influences our society. This production experiments with the artform in many ways, from a silly satire in Act I to a reality show in Act II. My vision for the production challenges the parameters of Zoom in this exciting intersection of live theatre and virtual theatre. You will see actors who are in a full design performing from the safety of their homes. The rest of the team operates the show all over the state. Through a brilliant collaboration with my designers, we have created a wild, playful, and ever-changing theatrical world that will take you on a journey of authenticity, shared in a new live virtual platform executed by our Integrated Media Designer McKenna Perry. Thank you to all who worked tirelessly to make this production happen. Thank you to my cast and creative team, the staff, faculty, and department for embracing every change that the universe gave us. Thank you audience members for taking the time to commit to live theatre! ‘ Jesca Prudencio, Director SDSU Theatre and Film Events • For tickets and information, visit: ttf.sdsu.edu

DRAMATURG STEPHEN ZAGRODNEY is a third year student at SDSU pursuing a
double major in Theatre Arts and Marketing. For the last six years he has been exploring theatre and how we tell stories. His most memorable experiences were directing productions of A Very Potter Musical and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. While he does not know exactly what he will pursue in the future, he hopes to blend his interests in people, storytelling, and creative expression. Stephen first read Cloud 9 in THEA 325, Script Analysis, and fell in love with its take on social commentary and its use of satire to wrestle with contemporary issues. He is so excited to be working on this production and hopes you enjoy the performance.
DRAMATURG’S NOTE The Roles We Take On From birth, we are all assigned multiple identities. Child, friend, sibling, spouse; we use labels to organize and understand the world around us. In Cloud 9, Caryl Churchill uses potent satire and meaningful (and hilarious) farce to pull at these identities and reveal the power structures lying beneath them all. Cloud 9 was not written in a typical way. When Churchill began working on the show with the directors and actors, there was no script. The play was created through workshops and explorations amongst the company of the Joint Stock Theatre Group in 1978-79. The company focused their exploration on sexual politics, stereotypes, and their own experiences with identity. Playing with form and style, Churchill then took this work and created a plot and characters to tell a story that tackles “the colonial or feminine mentality of interiorized repression.” Act I takes us to a time of rigid expectations in 19th Century Africa. We see the effects, both intended and unintended, of patriarchal standards in this male-dominated society. Act II brings us 100 years into the future and loosens these boundaries, and while we are in 1979 in London, only 25 years have passed for our characters. Churchill creates a juxtaposition, playing into two different genres and two different societies that both speak to the complex relationship between identity and power.

Making his mainstage debut last year as Beethoven in Dog Sees God, Matthew is super excited his second opportunity is in Cloud 9. He has also acted in multiple Skull and Dagger shows including Picasso at the Lapin Agile, Spring Awakening, and The Last Days of Judas Iscariot. However, Cloud 9 is definitely one of his favorites. To him there are so many messages and feelings in this play that he finds so incredibly important even 40 years after its original premiere. He would like to thank his cast and crew for making such a fun and accepting place to work in full of laughter and love. He would also like to thank his director, Jesca, for pushing him, letting him make crazy choices, and allowing him to have so much fun with his characters.
Phoebe Appel
(Mrs. Saunders/Betty) Phoebe Appel is a freshman at SDSU in the Theatre and Performance program. She is SO excited to make her performance debut in Cloud 9! It is such an honor to have the opportunity to be a part of such a thought-provoking play that deals with themes of sexual identity and gender roles, themes that couldn’t be more relevant to today’s society. Some of her most recent roles in high school include Donkey in Shrek the Musical, Natalie in Distracted, Glory in Almost, Maine, and one of the Jet boys in West Side Story. The actors are outrageously hilarious, and have made the rehearsal process a blast. She wants to thank Jesca for this incredible opportunity and the rest of the talented cast for making her feel so welcome at SDSU, even on Zoom under these strange circumstances. She hopes you enjoy the show!
Lester Isariuz (Harry Bagley/Martin)
Lester is thrilled to be a part of the cast of Cloud 9. He was previously seen in SDSU’s zoom production of Metamorphosis and Skull & Dagger’s stage production of The Last Days of Judas Iscariot. He is ecstatic to be performing in Cloud 9 with so many spirited individuals! In his future, he is looking forward to obtaining a M.F.A in Acting to become a theatre professor, star in cinema, and explore the realm of drama therapy. His most important advice is remember to laugh and love; and be confident in your melanin! C’est chouette!
