WELCOME Welcome to the third production of our 20/21 season. You will find the conceptualization of our version of Much Ado about Nothing quite distinct and critically relevant. Although we remain in a pandemic; the limitations of sheltering in place, the distracting social upheavals around the world will not claim victory in the deprivation of our creative expression. Let’s make no mistake—for creatives--these are extremely challenging and turbulent times. Deeply confusing for our students who daily and desperately struggle with the continued uncertainties and yearn for a return to normalcy. Stranded on this vast desert of limitations, they have tapped deeply inside and with discipline, created this oasis of artistic resurgence. Thank you all for supporting our work, which could never happen without the commitment of the cast, crew, dramaturgs, design technologists, the director, New media production colleagues, Sound designers, box office manager, staff, faculty and not forgetting the equipment support we receive from the PSFA College Dean, Dr. Shannon, which affords us the possibilities and opportunities for producing on the Virtual platform. DIRECTOR’S NOTE

The 2020 SDSU production of Much Ado About Nothing is set in the late 19th century, central coast of California. While deeply comic, the play examines American history through the microcosm of California history. In 2020, we think of Californians as leaders in cultural and social innovations. The late 1800s was a dramatically different period, affected by the discovery of gold, the trans-continental railroad, and the country’s westward expansion. Ensuing government policies favored a few powerful people who controlled the wealth created by transportation, communication, and extraction industries of the era. Early Californians also waged a brutal genocide against Native Americans, with a large number of massacres. How can this be the backdrop for a romantic comedy? Because love is how we get through the degradation of racism, injustice, and misogyny. It’s important in 2020 to remind folks that we have been here before. The play prods us to take action during these dark hours to find hope and love. We have to turn away from hate and ignorance, as many characters in Much Ado About Nothing discover. In our production, a group of buffalo soldiers arrive at Leonato’s estate after a successful military action. The land has a history connected to the Mexican period, before California was part of the US. The history of the fictional estate is one where people from different racial and ethnic backgrounds lived and worked together. While law enforcement officers in the play don’t understand basic concepts of justice, they love authority. A quaker minister might be the key to recognizing “plain dealing villains” who are intertwined with power and wealth. 2020 is a time to remember that power is far too often gained by prejudicial exclusion of people based on race, gender, orientation, or socio-economic class. Too often these practices form barriers for people seeking “…life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”


DIRECTOR RANDY REINHOLZ,

(Choctaw) is Founder and Producing Artistic Director Emeritus of Native Voices at the Autry. A producer, director, actor and playwright, with over 100 productions in the United States, Australia, Great Britain, Canada and Mexico. Reinholz received ATHE’s Ellen Stewart Career Achievement in Professional Theatre Award recipient, also recognized with Playwrights’ Arena’s Lee Melville Award for outstanding contributions to Los Angeles theatre. Reinholz has also received: Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award, MAP Grant, McKnight Fellowship, and multiyear support from the NEA, Ford Foundation, Shubert Foundation, City of LA Cultural Affairs, Disney, Sony, and LA County Arts Commission. A professor at San Diego State University since 1997, he has served as Head of Acting, Director of the School of Theatre, Television, and Film, and Director of Community Engagement and Innovation.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR DEVIN ROBBINS - Performing in roles such as Gregor in Metamorphosis,

Ramiro/Juilo in Just Like Us, Butch Honeywell in The Last Days of Judas Iscariot, Lane in Liquidation, various roles in Playwrights Project: Beyond Prison Walls, Devin continues his training at SDSU, studying his craft in film, theatre, voice acting, physicality and movement, method, improvisational, and commercial acting while receiving teachings from Jesca Prudencio, Randy Reinholz, Tim Powell, Adrian Alita, Dani Bedau, Peter Cirino, and Carolyn Keith. Having an identical twin, passion for video-games, strong physicality, and ability to juggle, Devin’s amusing nature is carried with him as he excitedly awaits to bring to life the stories of his future personas on Broadway and the Big Screen!

DRAMATURG EMILY SAPP is a graduate student in the Department of Women’s

Studies at SDSU. Her research focuses include feminist theatre, feminist dramaturgy, and sexual violence against female-identifying people. She is originally from Arizona and completed her bachelor’s degree in theatre at Arizona State University. She is the dramaturg for Much Ado About Nothing and helped to compile research material for actors, designers, and audiences; she also assisted in creating the dramaturgical website for the play. SCENIC DESIGNER REIKO HUFFMAN is a third year Scenic Design MFA candidate at

San Diego State University and is excited to have explored this new medium for our production. Upcoming projects and work for Reiko Huffman include: Scenic Design/Scenic Charge for the Bartleet Haunted House in Oceanside, CA, teaching a virtual Masterclass at Groundworks Theatre in San Diego, designing Zoom: An Exploration of Virtual Space with Choreographer Lizzie Aguirre, hosting virtual Scenic Design workshops with SDSU undergrads. Reiko Huffman believes in exercising her creativity despite limitations. She believes in embracing the madness and the chaos. Sometimes following your heart means losing your mind.

COSTUME DESIGNER TAYLOR S. PAYNE - After growing up in and around theatre throughout

San Diego, Taylor moved to Chicago where she received her BFA in Costume Design and Technology from DePaul University’s The Theatre School. Over the last several years since then she has designed costumes, styled wigs, and applied makeup for theatre, film, and opera in Chicago, New York, Vancouver, and Los Angeles. While pursuing freelance work, Taylor also began teaching in the theatre department at East Los Angeles College where she found a love for education. She has also worked with the California Educational Theatre Association to encourage theatre artistry with Southern California high schools. Taylor is currently earning her MFA in Costume Design at SDSU where she recently designed Hookman in association with The Moxie Theatre, Flight with the School of Music, and assisted at Cygnet Theatre on their production of Pride and Prejudice in 2019. Unfortunately, Taylor had to complete her 2020 summer with Williamstown Theatre Festival online but learned a lot through the webinars that were offered. In addition to design Taylor has worked on other productions doing puppet construction, dye work, and various costume craft artistry.


ZOOM COSTUME COORDINATOR MIRANDA SIEBER is a first year Costume Design and Technology

MFA student at SDSU and is excited to be making her graduate school debut with Much Ado About Nothing. She has come to San Diego by way of Kalamazoo, MI, Orlando, FL, and her hometown of South Bend, IN. Favorite design credits include Matilda the Musical and Once on This Island at the Kalamazoo Civic Theatre and Twelfth Night at the Notre Dame Shakespeare Festival. LIGHTING DESIGNER COLBY FREEL is a lighting designer with experience working in many

areas of the entertainment industry including plays, musicals, ballet, contemporary dance, and concerts. Colby received his BA in Theatre with a concentration in Design/Technical Theatre from the Department of Theater at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, in Spring of 2019. He is currently in his second year of MFA studies at the School of Theatre, Television and Film at San Diego State University. His recent production credits include lighting design for Disney’s Newsies at Hering Auditorium, and scenic design for Evil Dead the Musical at the UAF Salisbury Theater.

SOUND DESIGNER THOMAS PREZIOSI - My name is Thomas, but you can call me Tom.

I am originally from Baltimore, Maryland. I lived there for 18 years then came to San Diego to go to SDSU. I am currently a fourth-year senior set to graduate in the spring with an English major and an Electroacoustic Music minor. My career interests involve music, more specifically having my own label and releasing music. Hobbies that I have heavily involve the creation of music, consuming and analyzing different types of literature, among many other activities. As far as my skills, I let my work and my actions speak for themselves.


CAST: WHO’S WHO Auva Abedini (Dogberry)

Auva is a senior transfer student graduating in Spring 2021 with a B.A. in Theatre, Performance and a certificate in Entertainment Management. Her previous roles at SDSU include Maggie Stranglewolf (Lying With Badgers), Erin (This Is About My Mother: A Coming Of Age Story) and The Vagina Monologues. She is incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be able to perform in her favorite Shakespeare show and for the support from her friends, family and faculty members.

Shelby Beltran

(Beatrice) Shelby Beltran is a fourth-year Theatre Performance major at SDSU. She is very excited to be involved in this production and to take on the incredibly iconic role of Beatrice! You may have seen her last as Olivia in Skull and Dagger’s original musical To Be Alive or as Marcie in Dog Sees God! She would like to give a huge thank you to the cast and crew for putting in such hard work to make this show happen. Although Zoom theatre could never compare to the beauty of live productions, she hopes you still enjoy the show!

Leo Ebanks (Benedick)

Leo Ebanks is a Theatre Performance major student here at SDSU. He is hopeful for what’s to come and thankful for the knowledge that has come so far in the process. He held the privilege of playing the past roles of Billy in Carrie, The Musical @ Onstage playhouse, and Georg in Spring Awakening @ Grossmont College. He’d like to thank his family and everyone else who stuck around during this difficult year. And even more, Chadwick Boseman. You paved a way for black students like me to have more opportunities, and you showed us how to be persistent in what we do. #Legendary

Alexis Eldridge (Oatcake/Ensemble)

Alexis is a senior at SDSU. She has been doing theatre since grade school and has been in a variety of shows. This is her first performance at SDSU in which she was excited to play the character Oatcake and be a part of the Theatre during these unique times. She thanks the director Randy for giving her the opportunity to be in this performance and all of the other actors and crew members for an amazing experience!

CAST: WHO’S WHO Sarah Glick

(Conrade) Sarah is absolutely thrilled to be in her first main-stage production at San Diego State University, portraying Conrade in Much Ado About Nothing! She is a sophomore Theatre major with an emphasis in Performance. Previous credits include virtually portraying Goneril in King Lear (Stardust Theatricals), as well as high school roles including Rebecca Nurse in The Crucible, Lt. Brannigan in Guys and Dolls, and Lennox/Second Murderer in Macbeth (Chaminade Players). She would like to thank Randy, Audrey, Andria, Prosper, Dani, the rest of the incredible cast and crew, as well as her family and friends for all their love and support. She is interested in all aspects of performance and acting, including stage, television, and film, and plans to pursue her passions in any way she can! She feels immensely grateful to continue to pursue her craft in this amazing virtual format.

Roosevelt Green

(Don Pedro) Roosevelt is a transfer student at SDSU pursuing a major in Theatre Arts: Performance with a minor in TFM Critical Studies. He transferred from San Diego Community College. He’s performed in over three plays at City College including To Kill A Mockingbird as the falsely accused Tom Robinson. His last performance at City College was in Anatomy of Gray where he played a Pastor Phineas Wingfield. He acted in two Stardust Theatricals productions. He portrayed a merciless World War II Sgt Merwin J. Toomey in Biloxi Blues, and the lead role of William Shakespeare’s King Lear, which was his first Shakespeare role. He also played the role of the cruel Father in Jesca Prudencio’s production of Metamorphosis, this will be his second play production at SDSU. When he is not acting, he writes creative stories as a hobby. Two other skills that he wishes to hone are poetry and playwriting.

CAST: WHO’S WHO Raphael Gregoire (Leonato)

Raphael is in his final year at SDSU majoring in General Theatre and minoring in Creative Writing. His first theatrical production at SDSU was Across Campus Theatre’s production of Hamlet, directed by Adam Robinson, in which he played Guildenstern and the first Gravedigger. Last August he was in a Zoom production of King Lear, directed by Hunter Katz, playing the role of Edgar. In high school he was in a production of Our Town by Thornton Wilder. Working on this production of Much Ado About Nothing has been a very enriching experience for him; the opportunity to work carefully and in-depth on a Shakespeare text with a talented, committed cast and crew has been a great experience in these unusual times, and the experience of working on the character of Leonato an ever-evolving process. In addition to theatre he is also interested in history, cultures, and film, among other areas.

Christopher Hawley

(Antonio/Verges) I am a third year at SDSU majoring in Theatre, Performance emphasis, and I am thrilled to be a part of this adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing. This is my debut in an SDSU department show and it was an honor to get cast in this production. I was also involved in Peter Cirino’s Playwright’s Project, which I thought was a great way to get my feet wet and to meet so many talented people. I would like to thank the whole cast and crew for helping to put together an incredible show and to illustrate to people the world that Shakespeare had to offer. I also appreciate the opportunity that our director, Randy Reinholz, gave me to play this role and to use my imagination to build such a unique foundation for my character. Furthermore, my family has shown support for me and my interests, and I know I can alway rely on them for anything that I put my mind to. I cannot wait to see many more possibilities going into the entertainment field and to use each character I play as a way to strengthen my confidence as an actor.

CAST: WHO’S WHO Janey Hurley

(Preacher Francine) In the midst of a global pandemic, this group of artists said; “we want to create anyway.” I cannot express in 150 words or less what it has meant to me to be able to create with them. This piece is truly the most meaningful thing that I did this year, and I owe every ounce of gratitude to this exceptional cast, crew, and Randy & Dani themselves. To everyone who has ever said, “the theatre will never die;” this one is for you. I hope that while you enjoy our production, you also catch a glimpse of these artists’ resilience. To my cast, your dedication to the craft moves me. I can’t wait for the opportunity to work alongside you in person. Meantime let wonder seem familiar and to the virtual stage let us presently! Boundless love to you all.

Mikaela Macias

(Hero) Mikaela Rae Macias is a freshman at San Diego State University as a Theatre Performance major. She is more than thrilled and beyond grateful for her role as Hero in SDSU’s Production of Much Ado About Nothing. Some of her favorite past roles are Hope Cladwell in Urinetown the Musical (Coronado School of the Arts), Duke Frederick in As You Like It (Coronado School of the Arts), Anne Frank in The Diary of Anne Frank (Coronado School of the Arts), and a Young Immigrant in Cartas Desde El Muro (Coronado School of the Arts). She is currently creating a devised piece with the Across Campus Theatre Group on the topic of Fear. Mikaela would like to give a humongous thank you to her mom, sister, grandmother, and little cousin for being her constant reminders of the power that women have. She would also like to give a special thanks to Randy Reinholz, Dani Bedau, and the cast and crew of this production for welcoming her with open arms.

Phillip Magin

(Hortensio) Phillip is thrilled to be a part of Much Ado About Nothing, his first mainstage show at SDSU. He previously was in a student production of The Trojan Women and played Talthybius. He has been in other Shakespeare plays including Romeo and Juliet, The Tempest, Macbeth, and The Taming of the Shrew. Other productions include work with Coronado Playhouse, New Village Arts, Backyard Renaissance Theatre Company, and the San Diego International Fringe Festival. He wrote, directed, produced, and acted in No Distractions, which played at the Tenth Avenue Arts Center in downtown San Diego. He is currently double majoring in Theatre Arts, Emphasis in Performance and International Business. He’d like to thank Randy for this great opportunity and his parents for the free Wi-Fi.


CAST: WHO’S WHO Kaivan Mohsenzadeh (Don John)

Kaivan Mohsenzadeh is in his final year as a Theatre major at SDSU. Kaivan began his career working at community theaters around town such as The Coronado Playhouse, Patio Playhouse, Point Loma Playhouse, and graduating from the Mesa College Theatre Company. During his time at SDSU, Kaivan has had the opportunity to perform on many SDSU productions, short films, and zoom shows! His most recent credits at SDSU include Twelfth Night (Orsino), Lying With Badgers (Asher), and Modern (Maurice). He is currently working as an intern at New Village Arts and is the current Artistic Director for SDSU’s Across Campus Theatre. Kaivan is thankful for the opportunity to work with such a talented group of actors and designers along with his instructors, Randy and Dani. He hopes you enjoy the show and wishes you peace and safety during these times.

Noelle Mortensen (Balthasar/First Watch)

Noelle, a fourth-year in her final semester, is ecstatic to be in this virtual production of Much Ado! Noelle was last seen as a guide in Hookman at SDSU. When not busy with theatre she is working on the news broadcast show Newscene, which can be found under the same title on YouTube. She would like to thank her wonderful cast and crew, as well as her amazing director Randy for making this show so fun and a great creative outlet during these hard times. Drake Robbins

(Claudio) Performing in favorite roles such as Van in Dog Sees God, Ramiro in Just Like Us, Alex Dennison in Rehearsal For Murder, Donny in Dilemmas with Dinner, various characters in the Playwrights Project: Beyond Prison Walls, and now as Claudio in Much Ado About Nothing, Drake continues honing his craft at the San Diego State University Theatre Department. He has trained under Adrian Alita, Jesca Prudencio, Carolyn Keith, Randy Reinholz, Peter Cirino, Tim Powell, and Dani Bedau. A self-taught juggler, an identical twin, a video game and anime fanatic, with an animated physicality, he is interested in all avenues of acting: stage, commercial, voice acting, improvisational, television, and film. He continues his pursuit to one day act on the big screen and on Broadway, as he continues to entertain the masses.


CAST: WHO’S WHO Marissa Rodriguez (Ursula)

Marissa is in her final year at SDSU studying Theatre, Performance emphasis. She has been acting since age ten, performing for camera and stage. Last fall, she played Jen in SDSU’s production of Más. Her latest productions include the short film Duality of Being by Amanda Rodriguez and the musical El Colibrí Mágico by Joseph Waters. Throughout her time in San Diego, she has had the privilege of performing with local theatre companies including Amigos Del Rep and Onstage Playhouse. This past Spring, she studied and trained in autobiographical theatre and physical theatre at the University of Kent in England. She is thrilled to be performing virtually for the first time in Much Ado About Nothing. Despite all the challenges and obstacles these times have presented, she is dedicated to spreading relief and love through her art. Marissa thanks her family, friends, instructors, and collaborators who inspire her always.

Cat Rojo (Margaret)

Cat Rojo is a third-year Theatre Performance major with both a minor in Electroacoustic Music and Spanish! She has trained at the Professional School For The Arts in voice, acting, and musical theatre dance, before and throughout her time at SDSU. She has had the pleasure of playing wonderful roles in musical theatre, such as Dragon in Shrek: The Musical and Fastrada in Pippin. She is incredibly thankful for the opportunity to perform virtually and work with other creators looking to create! After playing Babe in her first virtual production (Crimes of the Heart) she is incredibly excited to be playing Margaret in her first Shakespeare production. She hopes you enjoy the show!

Sydney Villa

(Seacole) Sydney is a freshman TFM major at San Diego State University. This will be her SDSU zoom production debut. She has been in another of Shakespeare’s classics A Midsummer Night’s Dream and portrayed the role of Hermia. Sydney has been in over 35 productions and some more of her recent credits include playing Mama Ogre in Shrek the musical, Belle in A Christmas Carol, and being a part of the Broadway San Diego All Star Chorus cast. She is grateful for the opportunity to do what she is passionate about. Sydney would like to thank her parents for being supportive throughout this process and last, but not least, thank the amazing cast and crew for creating an amazing production.


CAST: WHO’S WHO Shelby Wuitschick (Messenger/Sexton)

Shelby is proud to be a part of her first Mainstage production at SDSU! She is a sophomore Theatre Performance major, studying acting and musical theatre. You may have seen her in The Magic Hummingbird as a member of the ensemble, in Oedipus the King as a chorus member, or in Die, Mr. Darcy, Die! as various roles. Her favorite roles include Sandra Bloom (Big Fish), Audrey (Leading Ladies), and a principal dancer (The Little Mermaid). Her hobbies include baking, roller skating, and quoting Disney movies. Shelby is thrilled to have gotten the opportunity to perform in this wonderful show. She would like to say a big thank you to her family and friends for being her biggest supporters, and she’s extremely grateful to continue working on her craft on this online platform.
