Brought to you by South Dublin Libraries

MAYOR WELCOME As Mayor of South Dublin County Council, I am delighted to welcome you to the third annual Red Line Book Festival, a wonderful series of events for readers, writers and book lovers organised by South Dublin Libraries. The Red Line Book Festival offers an opportunity for people of all ages to meet with first-class writers, poets and journalists from Ireland and abroad, some of whom are visiting South Dublin County for the first time. The Festival extends a warm welcome to international speakers Xiaolu Guo, Chinese author and film-maker, Alessandro Perissinotto, award winning crime fiction writer from Italy, and Tom Palmer, sports fiction writer for children from the UK. Particular Festival highlights include the ever-popular Readers Day with curators Dermot Bolger and Ciarån Carty at the helm; the Great War Roadshow, presented by historian and RTE broadcaster Myles Dungan celebrating the music of the First World War; and of course the annual TEDxTallaght, an exciting element of the Festival which is always sold-out. This year the theme is Theatre of Curiosity and once again there is a line-up of eclectic speakers who will inspire and engage their audience. The Festival also offers an exciting range of events for schools and children so there truly is something for everyone! South Dublin Libraries have always fostered creative writing and the Festival supports this not only through the Red Line Poetry Competition but also by providing a platform for budding writers to enrich their craft with a series of workshops led by published authors in various venues. The spirit of the Festival is to engage and involve the local community as audience and as participants, both bringing the arts to the local community and also channelling art from it. The Red Line Book Festival has been pivotal in promoting literacy and a richer cultural life in South Dublin County. On behalf of all involved with South Dublin County Council I would like to pay tribute to South Dublin Libraries and the many organisations and individuals both locally and nationally who have helped to make Red Line Book Festival happen. I have no doubt that the quality of the programme and its accessibility will attract many new audiences to South Dublin County – audiences such as the delegation from Uppsala University Sweden who we are delighted to welcome back again this year. With its wonderful venues including Civic Theatre Tallaght, Rua Red and South Dublin library branches, Red Line Book Festival is sure to place Tallaght and South Dublin County firmly on the national cultural calendar.

WEATHERING THE FUTURE Wednesday 15th October, 10.30am Main Auditorium, Civic Theatre Tallaght Booking at Civic Theatre Box Office: Tel 01 462 7477; boxoffice@civictheatre.ie Suitable for second level students - 3rd class upwards We still have time to alter our future. Our climate is changing and we are already starting to feel the effects of this in our everyday lives. But those effects are hard to understand and the science is incredibly complicated. It’s difficult to comprehend how small changes in temperature can cause catastrophic floods or droughts, heat waves and hurricanes. Can storytelling help achieve what scientists have struggled to do for decades – to convince us to act on climate change, work to reduce its effects and adapt to a world of more extreme and violent weather? Oisín McGann, Conor Kostick, Peadar Ó Guilín, and Dr. Anna Davies discuss how we can get the message across in a way that grabs people’s attention. Can we tell stories to help us all understand, and care, about how our planet’s climate is changing – and what it means for our future? This event is part of Weather Stations (www.globalweatherstations.com), an international project with Tallaght Community Arts and Collective Action exploring climate change through writing. It has been made possible by the Culture Programme of the European Union.

Nicola Pierce is the author of two books for children, Spirit of the Titanic and City of Fate, both featuring well known historical events. Her newer title City of Fate is set in Stalingrad during World War II and is described by Guardian Children’s Books as “gripping, exciting and unimaginably shattering”. Brian Gallagher is a full-time writer whose plays and short stories have been produced in Ireland, Britain and Canada. His first book of historical fiction for young readers was Across the Divide, set in the 1913 Dublin Lockout, followed by Taking Sides, set against the background of the Civil War, and Secrets and Shadows, an exciting spy novel that begins with the North Strand bombings during World War II. Rory McConville has been working in the comic book industry since he was sixteen. In that time he has written for DC Comics, Newbold Enterprises, Shadowline Comics and Fan-Atic Press. He is the author of Big Jim: Jim Larkin and the 1913 Lockout.
