Council President Young To Kick-Off Education Listening Tour Seven-Month Tour Will Focus On Ways To Maximize Student Achievement
T
onight at Crawford High School, Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher and Council President Tony Young will kickoff an education listening tour. The listening tour is designed to gain a better understanding of San Diego’s education system and focus on innovative programs that are working. The tour will serve as a platform for discussion among education leaders, stakeholders, and policy makers where each party can provide thoughts on where they see the region’s education system working, and how we can best move these policies forward. Each month will include an event designed to expand on a particular topic. Fletcher and Young, both passionate about education and serious about ensuring success for every child in San Diego, are committed to bettering our school system. Step by step, ideas generated from the tour will build on the premise that our region’s schools need to be great places to teach and to learn, and where all kids are supported to maximum achievement. “Every parent wants the very best for their children,” said Assemblyman Fletcher. “As a parent and a legislator, nothing should be more important than ensuring our children have the strong foundation they need to succeed in life. Council President Young and I believe that while budget restraints and other factors have posed challenges, it’s time to find new and innovative ways to provide schools today and future generations of children the best education possible.” It is critically important that San Diego’s educators have the resources they need to hone their craft and become even more effective so that future generations of students will be guaranteed a path of achievement. To do so, the tour, which to be held over a period of seven months, will include the following themes: May-Education Stakeholders Meeting: Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher and San Diego City Council President Tony Young will kick-off the education listening tour with a meeting of education stakeholders. The goal of the initial forum will be to convene a group of invested
education supporters for a candid and honest discussion. The meeting will be held at Crawford High School. June-Innovation in Our Schools: It is a common misconception that school districts are finding innovation too difficult to implement in the face of institutional reluctance and parochial standards. The world is changing at rapid speeds; San Diego school systems need to ensure stu-
dents are prepared for the demands of the 21st century. July-The Achievement Gap: Public schools across the state have become increasingly diverse, making the academic achievement gap one of the most challenging education issues we face. The racial and economic achievement gaps are a fact that California simply cannot afford to accept— economically or socially. We know that
all children can learn, so we must confront and change those things that are holding students back. August-The Importance of Early Education: Children who receive quality early education arrive at school ready to learn and they do better in school. They need fewer costly special education classes. They are more likely to graduate from high school and to hold jobs. The purpose of this meeting will be to discuss the importance of quality early education and how to increase the number of children who attend. September-Career Technical Education: Career and technical education is a core pillar in education. As the use of technology is accelerating, education should also change to reflect the needs of the workplace. The purpose of this forum will be to discuss the increased need for information technology and career training curriculum in schools. October-College Readiness: What a child learns in the early stages of educational development plays a key role in guiding their preparation for postsecondary education. It is critical that San Diego school curriculum provide rigorous academic preparation and parent support so that students have what they need to be college-ready. November-What Did We Learn? The last meeting will be to discuss the tour’s discovery items and how to implement them. “Our goal is to engage everyone in the education dialog so we can better help all of our students reach their full potential by acquiring the knowledge and skill sets needed for the workforce or post-secondary education,” said Council President Young. Tonight’s meeting invitees include superintendents from regional school districts including San Diego and Poway, teachers, students, parents, and community leaders. “With these topics as our goal, the tour is intended to be part of a journey toward a better future for San Diego,” said Fletcher. Assemblyman Fletcher represents portions of the cities of San Diego and Escondido and the city of Poway.

Get advice from the experts. Oprah often brings on experts to talk about everything from health to style, and she also brings financial advisors on her show, including Suze Orman. Off the show, Oprah has her own financial advisor.
Live with less. “Having the best things is no substitute for having the best life,” Oprah old her audience in 2009. She challenged families to go without their expensive luxuries, and changed all of their lives in the process.
Distinguish wants versus needs. Oprah enlisted Suze Orman to help viewers figure out if a purchase is a want or a need. She even admitted that most of things that she buys are wants, not needs, and Suze said that’s okay, because she has money to do that but she had not always.
Trust your gut. Okay, this isn’t exactly money advice, but Oprah’s biggest piece of advice, to go with what feels right, can help us in every part of our lives, including financial. Everything in your life might be telling you to charge that vacation, but if you’re gut is saying NO! Then DON’T

Tip Well. Despite longstanding and unfounded rumors that Oprah encourages bad tipping, the talk-show queen actually believes in always tipping at least 15 percent.
Go on a debt diet. Oprah’s always been open with her own struggles with dieting, and the debt diet she pioneered for her readers and viewers is meant to be every bit as inspirational. She enlisted financial experts David Bach, Jean Chatzky and Glinda Bridgforth to create a step-by-step guide to get people on the road to financial freedom.
Give Back. Oprah has always been an advocate of giving back. She launched Oprah’s Angel Network after inviting viewers to help her improve others’ lives in 1997, and since, she and her viewers have donated millions of dollars to build schools, help survivors of disasters, and assist hundreds of charities.
It’s okay to have favorite things. As much as Oprah encourages readers to give selflessly, she also encourages them to use their money to make their own lives a little richer. Her favorite things — from popcorn to music to body lotions and cooking supplies — have been given to audience members and highlighted for readers to indulge.
Being in dept means making sacrifices. Sarah Ferguson talked to Oprah about her money woes after being caught on video accepting a bribe, and after the show, Oprah became Fergie’s financial guru. How so? By reminding her she didn’t have any money and couldn’t go to Spain. Doh!

The Mistakes of the Past Have Destroyed the Black Community: What Will it Take to Overcome These Mistakes?
W
hen I arrived in this city in the late 50s, the Gaslamp District was known as “Harlem West”. It was lined with Black-owned restaurants, hotels, and other businesses. Hispanics were hardly visible. The unrest in the Black community was heavy on the hearts of us all, which at that time we called Logan Heights. We had no politicians, but the community was flirting with the idea of electing one. Not too long after, we appointed our very first councilman, the honorable Leon Williams. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., among other civil rights leaders rose to prominence, and began to help with the efforts to integrate the city of San Diego along with the rest of our nation. But with these changes in our society came a change within Blacks – from a productive mindset to one of consumption. When we put our first politician in office, it seemed to me that we believed that this politician
would hand us success. Ever since that day he first took office, the Black community has been on the steady decline. oday, we have experienced a number of Black politicians representing our area. We have expanded from Logan Heights to the greater Southeast San Diego. No matter what you call it, it’s where the Blacks and Mexicans live. Remember now that I said previously that during the 50s and 60s Mexicans were barely visible. Their migration shifted our community’s borders. Most of the Blacks that lived here came from somewhere else, primarily from the South. They had great creative minds with the attitude that one had to carve out success, not wait for it to be handed to you. I believe that these Blacks were lulled to sleep by the great weather, and the apparent idea that we were going to get a handout. Henceforth, the problems that exist today with gangs, drugs,

and other problems in our community have to do with this shift from productivity to consumption. Allow me to give you an example. I remember clearly seeing rabbits and other animals running around on the vacant land from 39th and Market Street on the West side extending back into the graveyard. The community agreed to give that land under a preferential program to white businesses. The trade-off was that blacks would get the benefit of the upgrade as well as job opportunities. This never happened. Blacks didn’t complain. Black leaders didn’t complain. So we got nothing. The attitude of being a consumer instead of a producer grew negative social fruit. That particular program reproduced itself in a number of other areas in our community. Again, nobody said anything. The Black Panthers were quiet. The US Organization was quiet. Instead, social services were offered on every corner of the community so that organizations could get their grants. We slowly slid deeper into the attitude of being consumers. That is the result today. An older man in our community went up to a young drug dealer and asked him why he wouldn’t stop selling drugs. The young man replied that he makes $1000 a day selling dope, and asked if he could replace it with something equal or better. The answer was no. Frankly, the man couldn’t even offer him a job. If we had started out in 1960 and continued the attitude of our forefathers of developing your mind and being productive, patenting your ideas and self-producing, we would at least have something to offer our children. We would have something more to offer gang members other than talk about why it’s not a good idea to be in a gang because you may get arrested. That’s not a good trade-off. In order to correct this situation, we have to part ways with the politicians, teachers, and other leaders of our community. We have to stop the panhandling attitude we all
EDITORIAL seem to hold so dear. Those that lived here in the 50s are gone. Many of us today are the children and grandchildren of those people. We have simply screwed up, and messed up good opportunities that may have been available to us. Blacks in the South during slavery couldn’t go to school to learn to read or write; they taught each other and did it on their own – an offense for which you could be hung. Today, Blacks everywhere have lost the ability to be creative. When a race of people stops creating, they become consumers supported by others. We have the biggest numbers in the homeless line. So what have we really received after having councilperson after councilperson, Black city managers, and Black county administrators other than promoting individuals? Blacks as a majority have not moved at all. Stop asking your children to do something we didn’t do ourselves. Our children will never succeed until we learn to do it ourselves. Black/African Identity Crisis! The fundamental challenge we as African Americans face, in religion, community-based organizations, business, education, diet, etc., is one of identity. At the heart of our problems is the confusion and negative perception we have regarding who and what we are. In the classic work on AFRICAN American identity by Dr. Na’im Akbar, Ph.D., Know Thy Self, in the chapter titled, EDUCATION: Vehicle for Transmission of Self-Knowledge. Dr. Akbar states: “Our humanity is defined…by…self-knowledge, therefore it is critically necessary for each generation to learn who and what they are.” According to Dr. Akbar, to lack self-knowledge is to be “mis-educated” like a trained dog: A ‘mis-educated’ person “demands dependency on someone other than ones own resources in order to survive.” This is where African Americans now find ourselves in the 21st Century. Due to a lack of self-knowledge, we are economically, politically, culturally and in every other way adrift on a stagnant sea of self-delusion, self-doubt and self-hate. We do not see ourselves in our own historical context and therefore have not progressed beyond the context of enslavement given to us by our enslavers. Ask most African Americans about our history and where our families came from and most will not look back beyond our American enslavement experience. We argue against being African, and for being American, but do we know what it means to be either? The “AFRICAN” in African American begins to identify the historical context of our very being – the source of our physical features, culture, music, philosophical and spiritual foundations, diet, and everything else – OUR IDENTITY! Our African-ness defined us long before there was an America, or a Europe for that matter. The world was in much better shape when our African ancestors ruled and cared for this planet and its people. Don’t let the colonizer/enslaver tell you what Africa was like before they got there. They do not and cannot know. Their very presence changed it. If we took all the African Americans in San Diego today and instantly transported us to another landscape just like San Diego, but there were no other humans there, no tools, clothes nor roads – JUST US – each other! Our minds and our hands. How long would we last? 150,000 Black people. Could we grow or find enough food fast enough to avoid starvation? Could we build enough shelters quickly enough not to have our children die of exposure? How would we manage enough water in this desert? Do we possess the knowledge and skills to survive and thrive? Or would we find ourselves, within days, begging to go back to the land of San Diego, where we are dependent on everyone else for our survival? How do we get out of this mess? MSG … A SLOW POISON By Lady Topaz The food additive Mono-Sodium Glutamate (MSG) is a slow poison. MSG hides behind 25 or more names, such as “Natural Flavoring.” MSG is even in your favorite coffee from Tim Horton’s and Starbucks coffee shops! Personally, I have wondered if there could be an actual chemical causing the massive obesity epidemic, and so did a friend of mine, John Erb. He was a research assistant at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada, and spent years working for the government. He made an amazing discovery while going through scientific journals for a book he was writing called The Slow Poisoning of America. In hundreds of studies around the world, scientists were creating obese mice and rats to use in diet or diabetes test studies. No strain of rat or mice is naturally obese, so scientists have to create them. They make these creatures morbidly obese by injecting them with MSG when they are first born. The MSG triples the amount of insulin the pancreas creates, causing rats (and perhaps humans) to become obese. They even have a name for the fat rodents they create: “MSGTreated Rats.” When I heard this, I was shocked. I went to my local supermarket and checked the labels. MSG was in everything — the Campbell’s soups, the Hostess Doritos, the Lays flavored potato chips, Top Ramen, Betty Crocker Hamburger Helper, Heinz canned gravy, Swanson frozen prepared meals, and Kraft salad dressings, especially the “healthy lowfat” ones. The items that didn’t have MSG marked on the product label had something called “Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein,” which is just another name for Monosodium Glutamate. It was shocking to see just how many of the foods we feed our children everyday are filled with this stuff. MSG is hidden under many different names in order to fool those who read the ingredient list, so that they don’t catch on.
(Other names for MSG are “Accent,” “Aginomoto,” “Natural Meat Tenderizer,” etc.) But it didn’t stop there. When I went out to eat with friends, we started asking at the restaurants what menu items contained MSG. Many employees, even the managers, swore they didn’t use MSG. But when we ask for the ingredient list, which they grudgingly provided, sure enough, MSG and Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein were everywhere. Burger King, McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Taco Bell, every restaurant - even the sit-down eateries like TGIF, Chili’s, Applebee’s, and Denny’s - use MSG in abundance. Kentucky Fried Chicken seemed to be the WORST offender: MSG was in every chicken dish, salad dressing, and gravy. No wonder I loved to eat that coating on the skin - their secret spice was MSG! So why is MSG in so many of the foods we eat? As a preservative, or a vitamin Not according to Mr. Erb. In his book The Slow Poisoning of America, he said that MSG is added to food for the addictive effect it has on the human body. Even the propaganda website sponsored by the food manufacturers lobby group supporting MSG explains that the reason they add it to food is to make people eat more. A study of the elderly showed that older people eat more of the foods that it is added to. The Glutamate Association lobbying group says eating more is a benefit to the elderly, but what does it do to the rest of us? “Betcha can’t eat [just] one,” takes on a whole new meaning where MSG is concerned! And we wonder why the nation is overweight!MSG manufacturers themselves admit that it addicts people to their products. It makes people choose their product over others, and makes people eat more of it than they would if MSG wasn’t added. Not only is MSG scientifically proven to cause obesity, it is an addictive substance. Since its introduction into the American food supply fifty years ago, MSG has been added in larger and larger doses to the pre-packaged meals, soups, snacks, and fast foods we are tempted to eat everyday. And no I am not a “Critic” And I am not a Spokesperson I am just one Voice And that’s what I love most about God He gave all of us One choice Which why… In the beginning It was “The Word” And that word was written with a rod And sometimes, just sometimes you guys We have got to lose a major part of ourselves Just to find God And I just thought that the very least that we could do would be to pause and to recognize her as “The Conduit” Because after all it was Debra Stephens that made everything run so very fluid Now I’ll admit that I don’t know much but that which I do know I know for sure Brown vs The Board of Education ended segregation for ever more Just one year before Debra was born In 1954 She not only came from humble beginnings but she came from them to Lincoln High And there are people in this town that will tell you that, that does not happen And that -that’s a lie Well it did happen and that is the reason “Why” It is so excruciatingly painfull for us to have to say “Good-bye” Because she had the very same tenacity as a child at 15 She was uncontrollably dedicated to “The White & to the Green” Yes we were 1+5 When we arrived at “The Hive” We were 15 years old and we were green But yet we became Lincoln’s “Green Machine” No we weren’t kids And we weren’t adults We were teenagers “Nuts, without Bolts” Debra Jackson entered Lincoln as a Sophmore In September of 1970 Just two years after the “Infamous Walkout” While the pressure was still on No, we didn’t come to Lincoln because, they told us not to go We all came to Lincoln Because of what “They didn’t know” Yes, we were bomb-barded with a lot of lies that just weren’t true And to this very day I thank God for such a precious and a symbolic “Hornets-eye-View” Of the whole wide world from Imperial Avenue But as a manifestation of that walk-out Debbie and I became two of the 967 students that attended the smallest school in this town But yet, just the mention of our name (Lincoln) to any of our competitors in town It meant the “Best” and the “Baddest” anywhere around Because when times got hard we all tried harder And that’s what made All of us smarter And, no Debra was never a member of the world renowned

New York’s/Radio City The infamous, high heeled, “Rockettes” No Debra was, the Colonel of, the notorious the hand clappin’ and the high steppin Our finest, and our hottest of all the Lincoln High Hornets “THE EBONETTES’ And you can ask anybody because it did not ever happen You could not become a student at Lincoln High if you was, “Half Steppin” Yeah, maybe one day I’ll get Alzheimers and possibly forget a few things But I will never, ever forget how Debra “Stepped our game-up” When she earned her wings You and I, and Debra will forever be linked (as in Lincoln) spiritually to a struggle Irregardless of how many current problems that we juggle Whenever I think about Duane and Debbie and you guys I am reminded of my past Because they’re that significant part of my life, that my joy has Therefore, the very next time that you think about what William Shakesphere articulated as”To Be” Why don’t you think about what bee-ing meant , to Debbie our beloved Queen Bee Afterall, “To be or Not to be” To me means That there’s a suspicion But to be a Lincoln Hornet That means… That you are a part of a tradition Bee-cause what she did for this community and for Lincoln High School Nobody has been able to duplicate it since And THAT IS WHY It is going to be so very hard to think of Debbie in the past tense That’s right four years ago it was George Stevens And now it bee’s Debra Stephens Will somebody please tell God That these odds, they don’t bee’s evens So, what are we going to do now without them two? No, the date of that last study was not a typo; it was published in 1978. Both the “medical research community” and “food manufacturers” have known about the side effects of MSG for decades. Many more of the studies mentioned in Mr. Erb’s book link MSG to diabetes, migraines and headaches, autism, ADHD, and even Alzheimer’s. So, what can we do to stop the food manufactures from dumping this fattening and addictive MSG into our food supply and causing the obesity epidemic we now see? Several months ago, John Erb took his book and his concerns to one of the highest government health officials in Canada. While he was sitting in the government office, the official told him, “Sure, I know how bad MSG is. I wouldn’t touch the stuff.” But this top-level government official refuses to tell the public what he knows. The big media doesn’t want to tell the public either, fearing issues with their advertisers. It seems that the fallout on the fast food industry may
hurt their profit margin. The food producers and restaurants have been addicting us to their products for years, and now we are paying the price for it. Our children should not be cursed with obesity caused by an addictive food additive. You may ask yourself, “but what can I do about it? I’m just one voice!” What can I do to stop the poisoning of our children, while our governments are insuring financial protection for the industry that is poisoning us? This message is going out to everyone I know in an attempt to tell you the truth that the corporate-owned politicians and media won’t tell you. The best way you can help to save yourself and your children from this drug-induced epidemic is to share this article to everyone. With any luck, it will bring enough awareness before politicians can pass legislation protecting those who are poisoning us. The food industry learned a lot from the tobacco industry. Imagine if big tobacco had a bill like this in place before someone blew the whistle on nicotine? Former Gangs Members and Community Residents Meet to Reduce Gang Violence in Central San Diego
San Diego, CA- May 23, 2011 Overcoming Gangs and Beyond, Metro United Methodist Urban Ministry, and Jacobs Foundation hosted a Leaders of Change meeting, calling on former gang members to go into the same communities they reeked havoc on decades earlier and assist in reducing violence. According to San Diego Police, overall violence has decreased in San Diego, but the first quarter reports indicate that gang violence is on the rise. To the people affected by gang violence, the community has felt the impact of the murder of: a father and son, two brothers, a father who had previously lost his wife to a drive-by shooting, a young man who had changed his life and is working on music and countless other residents. The San Diego Police Department's classification of gang related shootings and the community’s tend to be different. The meeting called on these OGs or Original Gangsters to get involved in: • Individual Mentoring • Group Mentoring • Violence Prevention • Work Readiness Attendees included: Councilman Tony Young, Rev. Ricky Laster, Minister Hugh Muhammad, Robert Tambuzi, Conrad Harris, Kevin Henderson, and Travis Stocking. Metro United Methodist Urban Ministry will offer free mentoring training to community members regardless of the agency or area former gang members choose to work in.

Attorney General Kamala D. Harris Announces Creation of Mortgage Fraud Strike Force to Protect Homeowners LOS ANGELES - Attorney General Kamala D. Harris today announced the creation of the California Attorney General’s Mortgage Fraud Strike Force, staffed by Department of Justice attorneys and investigators charged with protecting innocent homeowners and bringing to justice those who defraud them. Composed of both civil and criminal enforcement teams, the Mortgage Fraud Strike Force will monitor and prosecute violations at every step of the mortgage process, from the origination of mortgage loans to the marketing of mortgage-backed securities to the investing public. “Californians in search of the American dream all too often found a protracted personal and legal nightmare,” said Attorney General Harris. “Families are losing their homes, while those who perpetrated crimes and frauds against them walk free.” At her announcement of the new mortgage fraud unit, Attorney General Harris was joined by Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa, representatives from U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Center for Responsible Lending, as well as homeowners harmed by unlawful lending, servicing and foreclosure practices. “We will work to safeguard the homeowner at every step of the process - from origination of a loan to its securitization, and we will prosecute to the fullest extent of the law those who take advantage of trusting California families,” said Attorney General Harris. “We are setting a high bar for other states and we insist that homeowners be protected, respected, and informed.” The Mortgage Fraud Strike Force will operate out of Department of Justice offices in Los Angeles, Fresno, San Francisco and Sacramento. Twenty-five attorneys and investigators will work together in three teams: - The consumer enforcement team will target scams in the consumer arena, including predatory lending, unfair business practices in originat-

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa offered his support of the new strike force. “With nearly 10,000 foreclosures in the City of Los Angeles last year,” he said, “this strike force is certain to help countless residents and families from becoming victimized.” “The Attorney General’s authority and attention to this issue brings a critical law enforcement component to the table that will help stop the practice of predatory lending once and for all,” said Mayor Villaraigosa. “I applaud Attorney General Harris for her dedication to employing swift justice to the scam artists who prey on the residents of some of our most economically vulnerable neighborhoods.” California has been hit hard by the foreclosure crisis, and by predators who seek to profit from the millions of Californians who are underwater in their mortgages, in foreclosure, or at risk of entering foreclosure. Last year alone, there were foreclosure filings
against 546,669 California homes. It is projected that between 2009 and 2012, a total of 2 million California homes will enter the foreclosure process. In the last year, the California Department of Justice has received thousands of complaints related to foreclosure scams, mortgage fraud, and mortgage servicing practices. “The fingerprints of illegal activity are all over the foreclosure crisis,” said Paul Leonard, director of the California Office, Center for Responsible Lending. “The Attorney General’s effort marries the need to punish bad actors for the practices that brought our economy to the brink with the need to eliminate the scam artists
who have since attempted to profit from it. Given the economic damage wreaked by foreclosures in California, this initiative is very welcome news.” Attorney General Harris has long been dedicated to prosecuting mortgage fraud. In 2009, as District Attorney of San Francisco, she launched the first stand-alone district attorney’s mortgage fraud unit in California with $1.1 million from the U.S. Department of Justice. Urban League Honors Student Scholars By Tayari Howard The Urban League of San Diego County will present its 20th Annual Golden Pyramid Scholar Awards Education and Health Expo on Saturday, June 4, 2011, beginning at 10am at the Jenny Craig Pavilion located on the campus of the University of San Diego. Hundreds of students who have maintained a 3.0 or higher grade point average will be recognized amongst family members, friends, city government, military, local, civic and social leaders of the community. The program designed to identify, recruit, nurture and support students who strive for academic excellence also aims to mentor and support future leaders of tomorrow while promoting a college culture. It further strives to increase the number of African-American students and other underserved populations entering institutions of higher education. By promoting the event on the grounds of the University of San Diego, students and their families are introduced to an actual college campus reinforcing college as a viable and achievable alternative. The public will also be introduced to Health awareness, college and career preparation, and youth development booths and vendors. Students will be encouraged to enroll in Urban League programs such as “Be Smart-Digital Connections (math and science program), and Project Ready Nulites (leadership and college readiness program). The program will feature video message streams on big screens and brief greetings followed by a keynote message. A motivational and inspirational message regarding educational excellence, leadership, college, and career path is planned by an undisclosed and well known celebrity. Living in “America’s Finest City” we have the privilege in indulging in the most beautiful beaches that California has to offer. Talking to a few people awhile ago about all the vacations I’ve gone on, it came up in the conversation that many people who live in California have never visited the beach. That sounds absurd to me as going to the beach is one of the most inexpensive ways to get away and relax. It might cost you a little gas and you might have to deal with finding a parking spot but other than that it fits even the poorest person’s pocket book as an ideal daycation. It is not as crowded as the other beaches that I have visited and has some magnificent waves to bring your boogie board and surf. If you don’t want to deal with parking there are two buses that bring you right to the hotel that is on the beach, 901 & 904. The service begins on Saturday morning at 5 am and ends at 11 pm for only $2.25 one way. You can make any beach adventure a daycation or include a night stay to incorporate a staycation. In the summer my family likes to book a room at the Hotel Del Coronado and indulge in all of its amenities from ocean front villas, to butler service. The Hotel Del (Coronado) is what us locals call it, was built in 1888 and was made a natural historic land mark in 1977. Its pristine location on the beach makes any visitor feel like they are royalty. The 3 bedroom cottage suite is the ultimate in beachfront luxury with 2,035 sq foot suites. Each bedroom includes a bathroom with a five fixture bathroom, flat screen TV, fold down sofa bed, and its own fireplace. Located on the beach, they also include gated beach access. Last week a lady well-known in my community passed away. She was a relatively young woman in her late 50’s. People have been mentioning how they had just seen her a few days ago and one mentioned how she had just had lunch with her. To the surprise of many this woman had a severe stroke on Friday, May 13, 2011. Within 24 hours of that stroke conversation took place about taking her off the respirator. Within the following 48 hours it happened she was removed from the respirator. I share this story because life is but a vapor. We have no idea how long our time on this earth will be. The wisdom of David is found in his statement, “Lord, teach me to number my days.” He understood that we all had a finite time on this earth and he was hoping for a glimpse into that time frame. Paul who knew his time was short stated, “I have run my race. I have finished my course.” Then there are those of us who are not as aware of the brevity of our lives. We believe we will go on forever. The bible states “it’s appointed to every man to die and then the judgment.” The wisdom of God by not telling us exactly our last day is many of us would live like a hellion and then on the day before we were scheduled to go we would accept Christ as our personal Savior in order to squeak into heaven. There are many people through the centuries who have predicted the exact date they believe the world would come to an end. We’re told no man knows the day or the hour and since that is the case we should always be ready. My pastor is always reminding us that the only part of our life that we are responsible for is the dash. What’s the dash? It’s the line between the day you were born and the day you die. Each of us will give account as to what we did with the time given to us that is within our control – the dash. For those of us who are Christian’s in 11 Corinthian’s we are told that our lives will be tested by an incredibly hot, burning flame. We are told that whatever we’ve done since our acceptance of Christ will go through a furnace some will have remains and others won’t. If your life has amounted to one pleasing to God we are told that our lives will shine like precious jewels. When the fire hits precious gems they glow more brilliant. Then there are those who will have done nothing with their salvation and their life’s works will instantly combust into ash; that’s the residue of hay, stubble, and wood. Many of us make the mistake of thinking because we went through the process of accepting Jesus Christ as our personal Savior that our salvation is sealed and there is nothing else expected of us. Here is your litmus test to see if you truly accepted Christ as your personal Savior are you now new creations, and have old things have passed away. We are told because of what Christ did on the cross we no longer live for ourselves but for Him. We are to be ambassadors for Christ and ministers of reconciliation. We are to be the light of the world, the salt of the earth; we’re supposed to lead a dying world to Christ by our very lives. In Revelations we are told that they, those who didn’t know Christ, are overcome by the blood of the Lamb and the words of our testimony. We are reminded if we have love one for another then we are truly His disciples. We are told to live a life of forgiveness a life of compassion and mercy. Is your salvation sure? Are you sure that if Christ came back today that you would go to heaven? Is your life truly transformed? Are you a new creation or are you exactly the same? Has there been growth in your life? Will people remember you as a Christian because of your life or because of your membership? So as you review your life, Paul tells us each to examine ourselves to see if we are truly of the faith. The only two who know if you are truly saved and on your way to heaven is you and God. My prayer is that you don’t miscalculate and find yourself like the rich man looking up instead of looking down.

For effective healing, make sure exercise is tissue-appropriate Most programs focus on muscles, often missing source of pain By Gunnar Mossberg lthough injuries to muscles are common in sports, the majority of painful musculoskeletal conditions stem from compromise of tissues such as tendons, ligaments, joint capsules, fascia, cartilage and underlying bone, spinal discs, and associated nerves and blood vessels. These tissues have low metabolism, limited nutritional supply, and take much longer to heal than muscles. However, most exercise programs focus on stretching and strengthening of muscles, with little regard for what the underlying connective tissues need, in order to heal. Focusing the exercise solely on “tight or weak muscles� cannot only deprive the underlying strained or compressed tissues of needed stimulation to heal, but worse, easily compromise them further, delaying or preventing optimal healing. Early in rehabilitation, it is important to avoid applying excessive stretch or compression to tissues. However, complete rest and immobilization deprives the tissues of energy needed to heal, and will delay the recovery. The type of exercise and dosage prescribed will depend on the tissues involved, and therefore a thorough evaluation is first required. Early on, exercises are chosen to reduce the pain, and whenever possible are performed with motion, to remove swelling and waste products, and provide oxygen and nutrients to the tissues, and are performed in the most comfortable positions. Movements often must at first be small, and repeated slowly to the breathing rate, with a large number of repetitions, often in excess of 30, which may be repeated several times per day. Increased pain and/or swelling over the next several hours to 24-48 hours may indicate excessive exercise dosage. Isometric exercises (contraction without motion) should usually be avoided at first, as they tend to cut off

circulation and increase painful muscle guarding. As light resistance may be added, coordination is emphasized to establish a normal movement pattern, through gradually increasing range of motion and speed of movement, and endurance training with high repetition exercise favors the deep stabilizing muscles, and improves capillary growth. The next phase of rehabilitation exercise
aims to increase the tissue’s tolerance to stretch or compression, to meet the demands of daily activities and/or sports. This now requires gradually progressed exercise to therapeutically stress the involved tissue. Weight-bearing exercise now becomes more the norm, but caution must be exercised, for example, with arthritic joints, which must not be excessively compressed. Pain and swelling remain signs of over training. The exercise resistance may over time be increased to also promote increased strength, and joint protection. Functional movement patterns may now also be incorporated.
Tissue training is specific. Cartilage in joints, discs in the spine, bone, ligaments and tendons all require different training. Even muscles need specific training, depending on what they are asked to do with activities. Every condition and every individual is unique. Residents turned out to visit with FBI and police By Elizabeth Aguilera SAN DIEGO — Community members listened intently and asked questions of federal and local law enforcement authorities Tuesday at the first Spanish Town Hall on Public Safety hosted by the FBI. The meeting was held to help inform residents in the neighborhoods around the Jacobs Center, near Market Street and Euclid Avenue in San Diego, about fraud, identity theft, gangs and child online safety. “We want to reach out to the Spanish speaking community and we need their help,” said Juan Carlos Molina, FBI assistant special agent-in-charge. “It’s important to break down some of the barriers that the community faces.” Mariana Martinez, a community coordinator at the Jacobs Center, said such an event was long overdue because of the changing demographics of the surrounding neighborhoods, which have seen an influx of Latino residents. Many residents in the area have been scammed by telephone callers who persuade
them that they are a long lost relative and later ask for money, Martinez said. She plans to host a series of meetings that continue the law enforcement education of residents. “There is a need in our community,” Martinez said. “People are hungry for information, they have been victims and they don’t know where to go.” Representatives from the FBI, San Diego Police Department, U.S. Attorney’s Office and San Diego County Department of Education gave presentations to the crowd of about 50 people. The FBI conducts such outreach regularly to various ethnic, business and neighborhood groups. Police officials explained the differences between gangs, tagging crews and party crews. They also gave parents a list of indicators to watch for that could signify interest or involvement in a gang such as colors, numbers, signs, tattoos, caps and belt buckles. Investigators encouraged the attendees to watch for signs, to talk to their children and to
seek out officers for help. “There has been so much violence here that it’s great for the community to get educated,” said Juana Santiago, a resident who attended the event. “I am leaving here with all the phone numbers for everyone and I’m very interested in the programs they told us about.” Resident Nicolas Espinal was concerned
about the fear that exists in the immigrant community to call the police because of law enforcement participation in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement programs.“We used to be more comfortable to call the police,” he said. “We have to return to that time. This is good if it leads to those policy changes.”

He noted that the proportion of Hispanics with less than a year between HIV and AIDS diag-
