Saints on Sundays, Ok Jacobs, Now What! Devils on Mondays Have you ever visited a new church, one that you have not attended before? People will come from across the room to welcome you. They will stop to talk to you in the parking lot. They will even invite you to their church lunchroom to have a sandwich or a dinner at the church’s expense. This kind of reception we would receive on a Sunday would never repeat on a Monday. On Monday morning, the same people that greeted you on Sunday will not even speak to you. In fact, they will act as if they’ve never even laid eyes on you. They’ll open the door for the elderly and even aid the seniors in and out of the church. But oh, come Monday they will not even pick you up to get a ride to work at the same office. Saints on Sunday, devils on Monday. That’s the kind of spirit that runs through the Black community today. In our Black community we are holier than thou on Sunday. If the church spirit we have on Sunday could be carried over to Monday we would shop with our brothers and sisters that own businesses in the community throughout the week — not just on Sunday. We Black Americans do not support inner-city businesses under our newly appreciated integrated system. Black businesses have to compete for the same dollars that White America automatically gets. Blacks have been in business for only a few years in comparison to whites. Yet, we have plenty of criticism as to why the Black man’s ice is not as cold as the white man’s ice. In Alabama they call these types of people Sunshine Christians or Fair Weather Christians. If we say we love our brother and our sister, that we are their keeper, why don’t we practice that love day in and day out? The preacher teaches you about brotherly love. We pray the prayer of forgiveness and unity, but when Monday comes, our fuse becomes very short. Our patience is nonexistent. We are quick to write off people and put them in their place. But when Sunday morning comes, we are all

EDITORIAL smiles. But as soon as Monday comes, our demeanor sinks back once again to: “I got mine, you better get yours.” The love that we demonstrate on Sunday is the type of love we need to spread from one Black family to another. I know some of you are going to say that we need to spread love regardless of race. I agree. Christians should love everyone, except we should love ourselves first. If we can’t love ourselves, how can you love someone who doesn’t look like you? These messages I’m speaking of are taught every Sunday from pulpit to pulpit. Black Americans have been going to church forever. My great grandfather went to church as a teen in a wagon with mules. We Black Americans have always been faithful with the fear of God but it doesn’t seem to extend to each other. In many cases we are each other’s worst critics. But if you can love them on Sunday, why not Monday? Until Next Week, Willie Morrow

By Brian Pollard Last Friday, the Jacobs Family Foundation/Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation (The Foundation) terminated it’s relationship with its President/CEO Jennifer Vanica and her husband Ron Cummings, the Foundation’s Chief Operating Officer. These Foundation Executives left quickly and very quietly. The press release simply announced the appointment of Roque J. Barros as the Interim CEO. Leaving the community to wonder what happened to the two individuals who have been around since the beginning, around 1995. The late Joe Jacobs brought his significant financial resources to our community with the very best of intentions; unfortunately, it wasn’t long before Foundation Executives found themselves at odds with several members of the community including two former and now deceased 4th District Council members. Today, many residents and business owners’ wonder what became of Joe Jacobs original vision, which was to provide the resources that would let area residents, determine their destiny. Over the years our community has been part of the several Jacob discussions; some led by the Foundation and others about the Foundation. Last year the community came together concerned about the loss of locally owned businesses in Market Creek Center . Remember the center was built to accommodate local businesses. The pain and disappointment was expressed strongly. Some of the concerns included; limited community involvement in the foundations decision-making; the switch from being a non-profit focused on community development to an entity more concerned with land banking and land development; the fact that the Jacobs Family Foundation Board of

Directors doesn’t have representation by anyone representing the community investors, and let’s not forget about the service and quality of food at Food 4 Less. The good news is that this change gives the Foundation an opportunity for a “doover”. If the plan is to stay in the Southeastern San Diego Community then it is time for the foundation to lose what many have felt, is the patriarchal attitude and become open to the vision, viewpoint and voice of those who must live with the final decisions, our residents. This can start by using several avenues to let the residents hear the truth about what the long and short future is for the foundation and this community. There must be a more transparent process in decision-making regarding working with residents, other non-profits and businesses, more transparency with the use of the 63 acres of land they own in our community, more people and Managers within the organization that represent our community, and who are empowered to act, not parrot “the company line”. There must be investor representation on the Board of Directors. This is important to ensure that the investors are able to have a smooth transition when ownership is finally turned over to the local community. That would be a good start. We need to be a “partner” not a “tool for their own means”. We appreciate the groundbreaking opportunity for resident ownership that has come out of this process and we appreciate the two developments (Market Creek Center and the Joe & Vi Jacobs Center) built by the foundation. The opportunity to work towards Joe Jacobs original vision is real and it is for that reason we say thank you to the Jacobs Foundation Board of Directors for it’s decision to remove the two top Executives.

Africa without African Americans By Ezrah Aharone There’s an upsurge of highlevel Asian activities in Africa that Africans in America should note. Most recently President Hu Jintao of China visited Nigeria in late April to sign a $4 billion deal to develop oilfields and infrastructure. Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi brought an astonishing 121-member delegation of political and business leaders to Ghana on a 3-day visit in early May. A South Korean delegation then arrived in Ghana shortly afterwards to solidify a multimillion dollar infrastructure contract. Why is this relevant? Well, as socalled “African Americans,” why aren’t we heavily involved in African affairs? What do Asian leaders know about Africa that Black leaders don’t know? These questions resonate being that Africa is nowhere incorporated within the Covenant with Black America blueprint. Yes, being besieged with poverty and destabilization, on the surface Africa certainly seems more like a calamity than a remedy. But such thinking overlooks Africa’s strategic importance to Western expansion and the fact that we are native to the most resource-rich continent on earth, of which all industrialized nations are partially dependant. Well, as so-called “African Americans,” why aren’t we heavily involved in African affairs? What do Asian leaders know about Africa that Black leaders don’t know? There is no other historical instance of a formerly enslaved people who valued integration with their former captors to the point where they completely abandon the superior wealth of their own homeland. If EuroAmericans were native to Africa instead of Europe, you can bet that Africa would be “fully developed” today. And there’s no way they’d neglect Africa and all its richness just to integrate with us. It’s therefore altogether

backwards to prioritize our attachment to Euro-Americans above rapprochement with Africa. The disconnect of Black America’s human and economic resources from Africa’s human and natural resources, contributes to the poverty and powerlessness of us both. Meanwhile, Europeans (and now Asians) entrench themselves deeper and cling to Africa for dear life because their economic and military might cannot otherwise be sustained without Africa’s strategic resources. Instead of being spectators as foreign governments and multinationals heist daily tons of resources from our homeland, we should be integral to the production, management, processing, and international distribution of African resources. This is easier said than done since Western “brands of democracy” operate in concert to forestall such arrangements… Colonialism was the graduated continuation of slavery. Colonialism thrived by virtue of slavery’s success. Together they comprised a singular force to fuel the dual process of European development and African demise. The interrelation and long-term impact of these “bookend institutions” explain why Europeans reign spaciously atop the present world order, while Africans are scrunched down at the bottom fighting for survival. It’s urgent and imperative therefore that all leaders of African descent understand the “geo-strategic economics” of how the world was fashioned into this current state. Otherwise they are, by default, perpetuating a world system rooted in irresolvable inequities. To maintain the current “balance of power,” the U.S. government has historically sought to minimize Black America’s interactions and impact in Africa. To make sense of this, you must understand that the Civil Rights and Black Power Movements ran concurrent with African Independence Movements. Since resistance to Western injustices was the common denominator to these movements, the U.S. government Continued on page 20

hese last few weeks of August, and this past year, has been a world roller coaster ride. Again we are witnessing historic changes: from the recent rise of powers in the Middle East (“Arab Spring”), the death of Osama Bin Laden to now the extreme weather patterns in the East Coast. It has truly been a whirlwind to what’s been going on to our planet. We are having earthquakes in the East Coast? August 23, 2011, residents from the East Coast experienced their first ever earthquake. A magnitude of 5.8 which shook from Virginia to all the way up to Toronto, Canada—hitting spots like D.C., New York, Georgia, and North Carolina. It even put cracks to our Washington Monument. And just when things couldn’t get possibly any stranger, Hurricane Irene is coming into town but this time hitting along the eastern seaboard (from North Carolina to New England)— completely missing Florida and Georgia. Hurricane Irene has extensively damaged the southeast Bahamas, with landlines knocked out, power outages, flooded roads and damaged homes, schools and churches. It is has been categorized as a category 2, 3, and even 4 hurricane—gusting up winds from 96 to 110 mph. Less powerful tropical storm-force winds, have been said to hit numerous communities such as Richmond, Va., Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Albany, N.Y. Some meteorologists would not be surprised if there are shattered glass windows from the great sky scrapers of New York City. For many Americans—who are residing in the East Coast—this has been a wake-up call. And now the concept of “vulnerability” is in full effect. If Japan can be susceptible to weather catastrophes so can New York City and even our nation’s capital. Not only is the East Coast experiencing new changes, but the Middle East too. For the first time in 42 years, the people of Libya are experiencing freedom of oppression. The freedom, to parade in the

streets; the freedom to shout, and of course the freedom to live—a pursuit of happiness for the people of Libya. When the revolution first started, “hope” was very distant. The rebellion against Gadhafi’s regimes appeared be a wasted cause. With the rise of civilian casualties and lack of support from outside forces (NATO), all was lost. But now with the capture of Gadhafi’s two sons and control of his main compounds, the war is coming to an end. At long last the rebels are coordinating their attacks with NATO forces and it is only a matter of time when Gadhafi would either surrender or be captured (dead or alive) in the hands of his people. There are rumors that he is hiding in the city’s sewers or running away toTirpoli’s airport station for escape, but still Gadhafi’s regime are present and until he is captured, the bloodshed will continue—this time, not as severe. So what do these shifts—weather patterns and transitions of power—mean for us Americans? For one it tells us that anyone in the U.S. and even the world is susceptible to attacks. No matter how geographically protected you are, or how powerful you may be, everyone is susceptible to attacks, in any shape or form. So it is important that we all must be vigilant and help one another in times of dismay. Then lastly, the shift of transitional power in Libya could mean prosperity for us. The stock market surprising went up during the capture of Gadhafi’s two sons. Now with Gadhafi’s oil reserves being untouched, we may see a hopeful change in oil prices.

Mediation vs. Litigation OMNILOGUE© - “All of us communicating with each other, so that we all come to a collective understanding, so that we all work toward the same goal.” ©

The Paradigm Shift Connect Create Collaborate By now, you’ve probably noticed that things, they are a changin’. Galactic alignment. Planetary shifts. Global catastrophes. Worldwide political and economic upheavals. Is Jesus coming tomorrow? I don’t know. One thing I can say, things in the future will not be as they were in the past. Or will they…? Are you ready for the change? Are you ready TO change. I constantly have this discussion with people who claim to be spiritual, but whose perspective is decidedly materialistic. The Nehemiah Project starts with the realization that it is people, not things, that matter. For centuries (perhaps millennia) the focus of supposed human development has been the technological development of “things” – bigger, better, faster, more lethal – things. Meanwhile, our spiritual development has lagged far behind, to the point that we live lives, individually and collectively, that are in direct contradiction to what we say we believe. For Christians, we say that spiritual things are most important, but we spend the vast majority of our time focused on material things. In fact, WE WASTE MOST OF OUR TIME on things that have nothing to do with spirituality. But, things, they are a changin’. I believe it is this perspective that is changing in the world. We are moving from a GrecoRoman, Cartesian-Newtonian, materialist frame of reference, back to the spiritual perspectives that had peacefully and progressively governed humankind for tens or hundreds of thousands of years, before the materialists came to ascendency and tried to make “things” out of humans. Much of humanity has been harmed by this way of thinking. But, things, they are a changin’. A critical issue is that of JUSTICE! Justice means “right.” What has been wrong for many, many years, is now being set right. What about you and I? Are we “right?” Are we aligned with the galaxy, the Earth, humanity and justice? (I didn’t say God, because most of us make up our own gods that align with us, regardless of truth.) Most of us in this country, especially Black folk, like to quote Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on justice: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” But how much injustice do we tolerate every day and never lift a finger or raise our voice? How many of us participate in the injustice and go along just to get along? Things, they are a changin’. Will you be part of the Paradigm Shift? Or will you find yourself on the wrong side of Justice? Keep a sharp eye out for change, and find the place where you belong. The Nehemiah Project Finance 101 Educational Campaign on September 6th, at 6:00 p.m., at the Urban League. 720 Gateway Center Drive. Then every first and second Tuesday – same time, same place. My name is Barbara (Clemmons) Trigueros I am a native San Diegan and raised in Southeast San Diego, I’ve seen the changes that have come about in the San Diego area. Changes in San Diego’s business and litigation atmosphere, which has gone from being calm, to quite a litigious atmosphere. This is where mediation has become an acceptable and realistic format for those that want to resolve their issues in the most efficient/ way. I want to introduce you to a better, more cost effective way of dealing with your legal issues. What I’m hoping to convey, is a better way for you to resolve legal issues, without going broke or receiving justice through Mediation What is Mediation? Many of you may not know what mediation is or how the process works and here is the long and the short of mediation. Mediation is a tool to utilize, in order to come to an expeditious solution with less than half of the financial burden of litigation (i.e. Retainer fees, Attorney fees, court costs, lengthy court dates, etc). A simple meeting of the minds, a solution of your liking. Any and all solutions that you only dreamed of (i.e. showing of emotions, prayer, handshake, apology, returning of documents/items etc.), which would not normally occur in a court of law, it can happen in mediation. You are allowed to decide your own solution on your own terms without attorneys involved. Most wrongs that need to be made right, cost financially up front, large sums that most of us can’t afford to pay this is where Mediation comes in to play. As the Director and a Mediator herself, Barbara knows the issues that many minorities face when going up against large entities or someone with large financial capitol to keep them out of litigation and burying them in paperwork. With that said, with Mediation there is a level playing field one in which you can sit down without their attorneys, and you and that individual can settle your issues. Let me help you with that process. Barbara, is a Mediator and Human Resources Director of GRASP Mediation. She is a native San Diegan, and the youngest of a very large family, raised with Christian values in which she continues to practice currently. Her family dynamics put her in a perfect position to be a born mediator, having to be diplomatic regarding situations in the family setting. She is the mother of one daughter that is accomplished in many areas herself (education, martial arts, etc.). She has volunteered as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for Foster Children, sponsored the Ms. Metro San Diego Scholarship Pageant, a Non-Profit Scholarship Pageant for Inner-City High School Young Ladies and mentored them as well. She has also taught Self-Esteem and Real Estate (1st Time-Homebuyers) seminars as well. Barbara’s professional affliations include, Certified Mediator, (UCLA), ABA Approved Paralegal, (USD), CA Assoc. of Realtors Interboard Arbitration Mediator, Member Earl B. Gilliam Bar Assoc., CA Realtor 20+yrs, Legal field Exp. 17 yrs.,

Barbara is also bilingual in Spanish. How Can We Help You At GRASP? At GRASP Mediation we are: • We are mediators with purpose. We are real people solving real problems with real solutions. • We believe that conflicts are stressful enough; the conflict resolution process doesn’t have to be. We have an office with an art gallery, and a calm and serene setting. • GRASP Mediation is more cost effective, diverse in background and skill, and innovative then other mediation firms. Surfers in conflict can pick a mediator that surfs. Two single mothers can pick a mother as a mediator. People who only want to pay 200 an hour can find a mediator instead of the usual “pay this or don’t get it” scenario. • People need mediation with the state of the economy right now. And they need an affordable mediation company. By educating the public of the various applications of mediation, the GRASP Team will show the public a more accessible and affordable means to problem solving. Services such as ours are affordable to all communities in San Diego County. GRASP Mediation provides personable, professional, innovative and cost-effective conflict resolution opportunities that encompass individual, group, business and community needs. GRASP mediators and staff consist of an educated and experienced group, diverse in both background and skill set. We strive not only to understand conflict, but to recognize how it is affects those involved. With practiced procedure, communication and creativity, GRASP believes that “Great Resolutions Achieve Social Progress.” -We have a team that represents the following languages: English, Spanish, Swahili, and Sign Language We also offer: A free conference on bullying for the San Diego public. THE BILLION DOLLAR PLAN! Let’s leave the next generation something to work with!

WEALTH !!! Good people leave an inheritance to their grandchildren, but the sinner’s wealth passes to the godly Proverbs 13:22 People need to understand where their money is going, and why - and increasingly how to control and direct the destination of their wealth. The ultimate would be to have an educated, invested, and engaged community, investing directly, and paying and playing a far greater role in community governance. We have to start somewhere. Right now, the sum is zero and as you know, nothing from nothing leaves – nothing. This is why we have not seen any financial progress in several decades; because we are not properly investing in our future. We are not making a commitment to ourselves and our families for a better life and brighter future. Even when African-Americans do everything right — get an education and work hard at well-paying jobs — they cannot achieve the wealth of their white peers in the workforce, and that translates into very different life chances. Blacks are slipping back more and more into economic and cultural servitude and political irrelevancy.

Be one of many individuals, families, businesses to rebuild wealth in our communities. We have all the means we need to build a prosperous financial life. A life that allows us to provide for our families while giving back to our communities, places of worship, and causes we hold dear. Wealth is a system of accumulation of resources. Therefore, to harness and accumulate wealth requires us to have a system in place.

It may take generations to do it. But it starts with making better decisions with the money we have. I have a PLAN and am making my clients AND my business partners very ?…WEALTHY!!! Eddie Price Maketing Director

Just Keeping It Real With Angela Harris Relationship Discussions

If a man doesn’t work he shouldn’t eat! What an anomaly! This isn’t only a biblical principle but also a non-Christian principle. I was speaking with Mr. Willie Morrow publisher of the San Diego Monitor and an expert chemist in hair care product development on this very subject. We are agreed that we are willing to accept that there is a high level of unemployment across the country we also agreed that a percentage, I’ll even take the liberty of saying a high percentage, are unemployed because the job they want is not available, so if not that then they’re not willing to accept anything. Another good friend of mine Kenya Edison stated, “I tell people to take the job they can while waiting on the job they want.” Wow what a concept – work whatever job is available while waiting on the dream job you’d like or prefer. It’s time we all hold all able bodies accountable for themselves, their families, and their livelihood. When the scripture addresses this issue of working being synonymous with eating or the right of If you have questions you would one to eat, back in the day it really referenced men in general as like answered or topics discussed, they had the sole financial responsibility of the family today this please send all questions to facescripture speaks to mankind – male and female. Able body people book.com/connectwithangelaharcan work. Able body people should work. Able body people who ris or email: are not actively seeking work should not expect other people to theharrisgroup@cox.net or feed them, house them or cloth them. Now let me make myself per- twitter@KeepingitealAH. fectly clear – I am willing to help those who have exhausted all For more articles recourses because that’s the right thing to do. Let’s face it there are www.keepingitrealwithangela harris.blogspot.com some out there who are just plain lazy and won’t work. Now someone out there is saying “I make more on unemployment than I would if I accepted one of those jobs.” I get that and that makes sense. The subsequent question is – what do you do when it runs out if you have not found that “want” job? Just maybe some will have to work two “can” jobs while waiting on that one “want” to job. Bottom line we are living in a time where the economy is having its challenge conversely families are struggling. We must put pride aside and do what is best for our families. We must show our children how to function in uncertain times that while actively (looking or work) trusting God. I for one am done with making loans, that don’t get paid back anyway, to people who are making the conscious decision to be particular in what they will or won’t do to make ends meet. I ask you, why should I give of my hard earned money, when no different from them I do “can” jobs while waiting on the “want” and they’re not willing to do whatever it takes? Here are some helpful tips to utilize while you wait on that “want” job: 1. Be honest with your family members. The entire family must pull together during this time. This will help all adjust their personal expectations and move into the realm of realism. 2. If you’ve been a name brand shopper there are ways to honor some of that – think outlets, thrift shops, discount stores, etc. Better yet don’t let the name brand dictate your value or your existence. 3. Hone up on your skills. Has the industry changed and job force changed? Take some classes that will increase your marketability. 4. Become creative. Are there some skills and talents you have that you can create a small business opportunity that will supplement your income? Who knows maybe that talent will blossom into something permanent. (ie. Mechanics, cleaning, catering, crafts, lawn, janitorial). These work aptitudes can be maneuvered around another “can” job. 5. Take a look at your spending habits and be honest as a family where you can realistically cut back. 6. This is the perfect time for family time and rediscovering the simple things, like parks, beaches, museums, talks at the dinner table, picnics, and board games. We’ve forgotten how to enjoy each other without spending a grip of money. 7. Be encouraged. This is not a time for you to make your family feel that your lives lack, but a time for them to understand cyclical changes and the sovereign ness of God, His wisdom, His provisions. Be like Paul “Whatever financial state I find myself in I have learned to be content.” This list isn’t meant to be exhaustive it’s meant to help you mine your way through these times with some finesse. In closing if you want to eat then work!

SURVIVING THE COLD AND FLU SEASON By Lady Topaz Now that it is Backto-School it is also back to Cold and Flu season. But, not to fear; rather, understand what is happening inside your body to help you put these familiar friends to rest. You have probably heard your grandmother warn, “feed a cold, starve a fever,” while you were neck-high under the covers stuffed up and miserable. Is there truth any truth to this kind admonishment? EVIDENCE FOR THE HEALTH CLAIM The idea of feeding a cold and starving a fever most likely originated during the Middle Ages when people believed that there were two kinds of illnesses. The illnesses caused by low temperatures, such as a cold, needed to be “fueled,” so eating was recommended. Illnesses caused by high temperatures, such as a fever, needed to be cooled down, so refraining from eating was thought to deprive the furnace of energy. Most doctors today reject this idea. However, in 2002, a Dutch research team conducted a small, preliminary study that provides some indirect support for the old myth. Researchers asked six healthy male participants to fast overnight before providing them with a liquid meal on one occasion and just water on another occasion. They found that the subjects’ immune systems responded differently under the conditions of feeding versus fasting. The results were striking. Six hours after the liquid meal, the volunteers’ levels of gamma interferon had more than quadrupled. Gamma interferon is a hallmark of the cellmediated immune response, in which killer T cells destroy any cells that have been invaded by pathogens. “This type of immunity is mainly directed against viral infections,” Gijs van den Brink of the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam says. “It seems to be stimulated by food.” But when the volunteers drank only water, levels of gamma interferon fell slightly, while

levels of another chemical messenger, interleukin-4, nearly quadrupled. Interleukin-4 is characteristic of the humoral immune response, in which B cells produce antibodies that attack pathogens lurking outside our cells. This response is needed to tackle most bacterial infections, van den Brink says. Rest the Value Added Plus The next time that you experience a cold or the flu, remember this: giving your body plenty of rest while allowing the cold or flu to run its course is also good for your health. Conventional medicine and the pharmaceutical industry would have you believe that there is no “cure” for the common cold, that you should protect yourself against the flu with a vaccine that is laden with toxic chemicals, and that during the midst of a cold or flu, it is favorable to ease your discomfort with a variety of medications that can suppress your symptoms. Unfortunately, all three of these positions represent a lack of understanding of what colds and flus really are, and what they mean to your body. BREAKING THINGS DOWN TO THE CELLULAR LEVEL Colds and flus are caused by viruses. So to understand what colds and flus do at a cellular level, you have to understand what viruses do at a cellular level. Do you remember learning about cellular division in grade seven science class? Each of your cells is called parent cells, and through processes of genetic duplication (mitosis) and cellular division (cytokinesis), each of your parent cells divides into two daughter cells. Each daughter cell is then considered a parent cell that will divide into two more daughter cells, and so on, and so on, and so on. Viruses are different from your cells in that they cannot duplicate themselves through mitosis and cytokinesis. Viruses are nothing but microscopic particles of genetic material, each coated by a thin layer of protein. Due to their design, viruses are not able to reproduce on their own. The only way that viruses can flourish in your body is by using the machinery and metabolism of your cells to Continued on page 22

Presidents On Black Unemployment: Reagan, Carter, Obama Trymaine Lee Trymaine Lee trymaine.lee@huffingtonpost.com President Obama has taken a lot of heat for not being more aggressive in addressing the country's double-digit unemployment rate among African Americans. Many have questioned why he has not come out with more strongly worded public pronouncements or a jobs agenda specifically to address the issue in the black community. Others have said that while black unemployment is indeed dire and in need of drastic action, Obama risks coming off as "tribal" (in the words of talkshow host Tavis Smiley) if he were to make such an overture. The president has largely shied away from specific rhetoric as it relates to the black workforce, maintaining instead that "a rising tide lifts all boats" and that as the economy rebounds, all Americans will benefit. The Huffington Post decided to take a (somewhat informal and incomplete) look at the public statements of President Obama and compare them to what recent past presidents have said about black unemployment, in their statements that most directly targeted the community during times of high black unemployment. This report does not take into account any particular program that might've been put in place or its efficacy, but merely looks at the presidents' rhetoric. Most of the quotes have been taken from documents included in the University of California, Santa Barbara’s The American Presidency Project, an electronic collection of 96,330 documents related to the study of the presidency. PRESIDENT JIMMY CARTER In 1977 President Jimmy Carter met with members of the Congressional Black Caucus and told them that black unemployment was his "most important domestic issue right now," according to an article published in The Milwaukee Journal on September 7 of that year. Just a month earlier, jobs reports showed unemployment among black teens at 40 percent, then the highest levels since World War II, the paper reported. "Obviously something has to change," Carter said at the time. The problem, he said, was "a lack of comprehensive urban policy." On April 5, 1978, during an interview at the White House with a PBS program called "Black Perspective on The News", Carter said that a proposed $8.3 billion in aid to spur growth in urban centers would ease the plight of blacks. Carter said: We have built on direct programs that would help people in the cities who are poor. We have cut down the unemployment rate, as you know, about 1.5 or almost 2 percent this past year. But we've also tried to triple purchasing from minority-owned businesses. We've put into the laws that were passed last year - the Congress did -- a mandatory requirement that 10 percent of the contracts be allotted to minority-owned businesses. We've exceeded those goals. We've tried to increase, and have succeeded again, in increasing the deposit of federal funds in black-owned banks, up to more than $100 million now. And we've exceeded our goal again. We plan on setting up an urban bank, which would give loans in special areas. We've advocated to the Congress under this program that tax incentives for employing difficult people to hire be rewarded and also prescribe investment credits on taxation for people who invest in the rundown urban centers. So, I think the cohesion of the whole program, the fact that it was built from the ground up, that it modifies existing programs, it puts a lot of money in, and is targeted, are all new factors.” He continued: I think it's obvious that when you reduce the unemployment rate overall in

Then-U.S. President George W. Bush stands with then-President-elect Barack Obama, former President George H.W. Bush, former President Bill Clinton and former President Jimmy Carter in the Oval Office of the White House in Washington, D.C., on January 7, 2009. (SAUL LOEB/AFP/Getty Images) the country, then the special government programs that are designed to help the private sector can be focused more and more specifically on those who are the first to be fired and the last to be hired in the private sector, which is quite often the minority citizens. So, I think although we have made some progress so far, we have still got a long way to go. And with the lower unemployment rate now, we can focus our attention much more on the black citizens, particularly young black citizens who are heavily affected adversely. On July 4, 1980, Carter told an audience of NAACP members gathered in Miami that "unemployment, and particularly black unemployment and particularly black young unemployment, is far, far too high." "Economic justice means more than just jobs for minorities; it also means a chance to build minority-owned businesses," he said. "I've only served 3 1/2 years as president, but I have already appointed more blacks, more women, and more Hispanics to the federal bench as judges than all other presidents in the 200-year history of this country. And I'm not through yet.” PRESIDENT RONALD REAGAN During the 1980 presidential debate in Cleveland between Carter and thenCalifornia Governor Ronald Reagan, the exchange turned to black unemployment. After a bit of back and forth about the nation’s future as a multiracial society, Carter pointed to the highly qualified black and Spanish citizens and women whom he'd brought into top levels of government and made a quip about Reagan, saying that "when (Reagan) was a younger man that there was no knowledge of a racial problem in this country. Those who suffered from discrimination because of race or sex certainly knew we had a racial problem.” Reagan touched on Carter’s insistence on a minimum wage and what he proposed as its downside in helping blacks get jobs, saying: Now, the President spoke a moment ago about -- that I was against the minimum wage. I wish he could have been with me when I sat with a group of teenagers who were black and who were telling me about their unemployment problems, and that it was the minimum wage that had done away with the jobs that they once could get. And indeed, every time it has increased, you will find there is an increase in minority unemployment among young people. And therefore I have been in favor of a separate minimum for them ... With regard to the great progress that has been made with this government spending, the rate of black unemployment in Detroit, Michigan, is 56 percent. In 1981 during the NAACP convention in Denver, Reagan spoke at length

about the government's role in black employment. Here's an excerpt from Reagan's speech. Can the black teenager who faces a staggering unemployment rate feel that government policies are a success? Can the black wage earner who sees more and more of his take-home pay shrinking because of government taxes feel satisfied? Can black parents say, despite a massive influx of federal aid, that educational standards in our schools have improved appreciably? Can the women I saw on television recently -- whose family had been on welfare for three generations and who feared that her children might be the fourth -- can she believe that current government policies will save her children from such a fate? We ask these tough questions, because we share your concerns about the future of the black community. We ask these questions, because the blacks of America should not be patronized as just one more voting bloc to be wooed and won. You are individuals, as we all are. Some have special needs. I don't think the federal government has met those needs. I've been listening to the specific needs of many people -- blacks, farmers, refugees, union members, women, small business men and women, and other groups -- they're commonly referred to as special-interest groups. Well, in reality they're all members of the interest group that I spoke of the day I took the oath of office. They are the people of America. And I'm pleased to serve that special-interest group. Reagan continued: The well-being of blacks, like the well-being of every other American, is linked directly to the health of the economy. For example, industries in which blacks had made sufficient gains in employment -- substantial gains, like autos and steel -- have been particularly hard hit. And "last hired, first fired" is a familiar refrain to too many black workers. And I don't need to tell this group what inflation has done to those who can least afford it. A declining economy is a poisonous gas that claims its first victims in poor neighborhoods, before floating out into the community at large. Therefore, in our national debate over budget and tax proposals, we shall not concede the moral high ground to the proponents of those policies that are responsible in the first place for our economic mess -- a mess which has injured all Americans. We will not concede the moral high ground to those who show more concern for federal programs than they do for what really determines the income and financial health of blacks -- the nation's economy. Now, I know you've been told that my proposal for economic recovery is designed to discriminate against all who are economically deprived. Now, those who say that could be confused by the misstatements that have been made by some who are either ignorant of the facts or those who are practicing, for political reasons, pure demagoguery. Rebuilding America's economy is an absolute moral imperative if we're to avoid splitting this society in two with class against class. I do not intend to let America drift further toward economic segregation. We must change the economic direction of this country to bring more blacks into the mainstream, and we must do it now. Reagan then quoted the Langston Hughes poem "Let America Be America Again," and then compared the U.S. economy to the Underground Railroad: It has spirited them away from poverty to middle-class prosperity and beyond. But too many blacks still remain behind. A glance at the statistics will show that a large proportion of the black people have not found economic freedom. Nationwide, for example, 43 percent of black families in 1979 had money Continued on page 17

WHAT IS DIABETES?

A knock at the door at 8 am on a Sunday morning always seems wrong however, my cousin was exuberated with excitement for a day of family fun! Unaware of why she was at my house so early in the morning, I couldn’t help but feed off of her excitement. Hopped in the shower and prepared myself for a mysterious day. First stop the Steele Canyon Country Club. I was in awe from the beauty and lush greenery and mountains lined up by a street filled with palm trees that stretched a mile long. Gated communities with homes that looked like they should be on Cribs, the man made lake that glistened with ducks and their ducklings brought cheer to my eyes. My cousin turned to me and said, “This is your Daycation gift from me to you”. My eyes filled with water and streamed down my face as I thought someone else thought of ME. I have tried countless times to expose my family to my world of reaching beyond your social status, circumstances, environment and class to the world of no limits for years. I never thought they were actually listening to me because of all the negative comments such as, you so boogie, you black, and I like the hood. TJ said, “Eb I had to try it for myself you know these daycation things you have been talking about and once I did, I found a peace, I’m not scared to travel to the unknown.” I could not believe we were actually on the golf course, I thought I died and went to heaven. It was a breezy sunny day; life was just at the pivotal point of being perfect until a tall tanned exquisite man with an accent walked up on me and began to speak. Under my breath I mumbled, “There must be a God on my side”. Still in a daze, I didn’t know whether to respond or play as if I didn’t hear him so he could speak again with his mesmerizing accent. My name is Ansari, and I couldn’t help notice your form (as he scaled up and down my body) I think you would do better if you, in the blink of a moment he embraced me from behind and placed his hands in mine while he grabbed the golf club to show me how to hit the ball. At that very moment my heart began to pound to the point I thought it was going to come out of my chest, my nostrils was smelling a wonderful aroma from this man cologne, and my body was all tingly inside from Ansari pressing up against me. So many thoughts were running through my mind like something just woke up, he might not want to do that, did my cousin pay him, he better not be a stripper, he smells and feels so good, Lord Jesus give me strength. When I came to myself I stared right into my cousins eyes and she was smiling with her whole face. Before, I got a chance to ask her if she paid the guy, Ansari asked if he and his friend could tag along with us for the remainder of the course. The next thing I know is two gorgeous men were accompanying us on the golf course. All of a sudden I just turned into the damsel in distress and couldn’t do anything (I didn’t even know who I was) Ansari was right there every time eager to help me and I let him. Of course they beat us but we did give them a run for their money at the end. By Grady P. Anderson, Jr., MD I hope you have been watching C-SPAN this week because they have had a review of the Medicare Health Plans. This has been very enlightening. Some of the items you should know about. One of these is the cost of medications. This morning there was a caller who called to ask the guest about the cost of as drug known as Actos. The gentleman was complaining about the cost of the drug going from $35.00 to $300.00 per month. That is a large and sizeable jump in healthcare cost. And that is just one medicationIt would appear that this medication is linked to bladder cancer. In June, Takeda Pharmaceuticals Co. Ltd. halted sales of Actos, its top drug, in Germany and France after pressure from regulators. This company has offices and labs located in La Jolla of San Diego, CA. Since then, both the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the European Medicines Agency have issued warnings about the cancer risk based on new research, but they have allowed sales to continue. Doctors are being told not to prescribe Actos for people who have or have had bladder cancer. The once-a-day pills were appealing. They helped control blood sugar tightly, had few side effects in most patients, boosted the effects of some other diabetes drugs, worked by a new mechanism – improving the body’s sensitivity to insulin – and even allowed patients to reduce or delay use of injected insulin. Actos, despite links to heart failure risk and other serious side effects, became the No. 1 diabetes pill after Avandia, the only other drug in that class, was found in 2007 to sharply increase risk of heart attacks. Avandia’s use was banned in the EU and sharply restricted here. Actos sales jumped from about $2.9 billion in 2006 to more than $4.3 billion last year. Now those billions in profit may well

shift to Takeda rivals. This should be the case if your company is killing people and causing cancer, Somebody needs to go to jail! In the past week, the first of what lawyers predict will be thousands of lawsuits were filed in courts across the country. You should check your medicine cabinet to see if you have this medication and if you have taken this for any period of time. Since I started this series of articles the focus has been to inform you that it is your body and your immune system that keeps you healthy. Second, it is FOOD that provides the needed sugars, nutrients and minerals you body uses to heal itself. Now another facet to this is the money that is tied to this problem. The presence of Dr. Wallach’s mineral product works and it is all natural if it is combined with glyconutrients, glycoproteins and phytonutrients then this new science of Glycobiology and Nutraceuticals can help improve your health. These products are safe that means there is no LD-50. The LD-50 is the minimal lethal dose that will kill 50% of the test population. In the case of Pharmaceuticals, these compounds can not be classified as a drug unless it can be shown to have LD-50.

Nick Ashford, of Motown Writing Duo, Dies at 70 By BEN SISARIO Nick Ashford, who with Valerie Simpson, his songwriting partner and later his wife, wrote some of Motown’s biggest hits, like “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” and “Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing,” before they remade their careers as a recording and touring duo, died on Monday in New York City. He was 70 and lived in Manhattan. Mr. Ashford had throat cancer and was undergoing treatment at a New York hospital, but the cause of his death was not immediately reported. His death was announced by the music publicist Liz Rosenberg. One of Motown’s leading songwriting and producing teams, Ashford & Simpson specialized in romantic duets of the most dramatic kind, professing the power of true love and the comforts of sweet talk. In “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” from 1967, their first of several hits for Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, lovers in close harmony proclaim their determination that “no wind, no rain, no winter’s cold, can stop me, baby,” while also making cuter promises like “If you’re ever in trouble, I’ll be there on the double.” Gaye and Terrell also sang the duo’s songs “Your Precious Love,” “Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing” and “You’re All I Need to Get By.” After leaving the Supremes in 1970, Diana Ross sang their “Reach Out and Touch Somebody’s Hand,” and later that year her version of “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” became her first No. 1 single as a solo artist. “They had magic, and that’s what creates those wonderful hits, that magic,” Verdine White of Earth, Wind and Fire told The Associated Press after learning of his friend’s death. “Without those songs, those artists wouldn’t have been able to go to the next level.” Nickolas Ashford was born on May 4, 1941, in Fairfield, S.C., and raised in Willow Run, Mich., where his father, Calvin, was a construction worker. He got his musical start at Willow Run Baptist Church, singing and writing songs for the gospel choir. He briefly attended Eastern Michigan University, in Ypsilanti, before heading to New York, where he tried but failed to find success as a dancer. In 1964, while homeless, Mr. Ashford went to White Rock Baptist Church in Harlem, where he

met Ms. Simpson, a 17-year-old recent high school graduate who was studying music. They began writing songs together, selling the first bunch for $64. In 1966, after Ray Charles sang “Let’s Go Get Stoned,” a song Ashford & Simpson wrote with Josephine Armstead, the duo signed on with Motown as writers and producers. They wrote for virtually every major act on the label, including Gladys Knight and the Pips (“Didn’t You Know You’d Have to Cry Sometime”) and Smokey Robinson and the Miracles (“Who’s Gonna Take the Blame”). While writing for Motown, Ashford & Simpson nursed a desire to perform, which Berry Gordy Jr., the founder of the label, discouraged. They left the label in 1973 and married in 1974. Ashford & Simpson’s initial collaborations sold poorly, but by the late ’70s they had become fixtures on the upper rungs of the rhythm-and-blues charts with songs like “Don’t Cost You Nothing,” “It Seems to Hang On” and “Found a Cure.” Their biggest success was “Solid,” from 1984, which went to No. 12 on the pop chart in the United States and in Britain climbed as high as No. 3. They sang of monogamous devotion, and on their album covers the couple were usually pictured pulling each other close in various states of undress. But with his shock of slicked black hair, shirts open to the sternum and playful smile, Mr. Ashford also cut a perfect figure as a seducer for the swinging ’70s. They continued to write for other singers. “I’m Every Woman” was a hit for Chaka Khan in 1978, and later for Whitney Houston on the soundtrack to the 1992 film “The Bodyguard.” In 1996, they opened the Sugar Bar on West 72nd Street in Manhattan. Recently they received a credit on Amy Winehouse’s song “Tears Dry on Their Own,” which features a sample from “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.” Mr. Ashford is survived by Ms. Simpson as well as two daughters, Nicole and Asia; three brothers, Paul, Albert and Frank; and his mother, Alice Ashford. Ashford & Simpson toured throughout their career, their harmony and vocal interplay illustrating the passion of their lyrics and of their life together.

Fewer See Improved Race Relations Under Obama (PRINCETON, N.J.) -- As President Obama prepares to commemorate the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr., with a speech at a new King monument on the National Mall, fewer Americans than two years ago say they believe race relations have improved under the country’s first black president, according to a new Gallup survey. Thirty-five percent of respondents said race relations have gotten “a lot better” or “a little better” under Obama, down from 41 percent who said the same in October 2009. The number who felt relations have remained the same rose by six points, from 35 to 41 percent, in the same period. The results are a dramatic change from the day after Obama’s election, when Gallup found 70 percent of Americans predicted race relations would improve. Twenty-three percent of Americans now believe race relations have gotten worse during Obama’s presidency, representing little change from 21 months earlier. Obama invoked King while discussing lingering social and economic frustration in parts

of the country at a New York City fundraiser last month, saying King's legacy is a reminder that progress takes time. “What he understood, what kept him going, was that the arc of the moral universe is long but it bends towards justice. But it doesn’t bend on its own," Obama said. "It bends because all of us are putting our hand on the arc, and we are bending it in that direction, and it takes time. And it's hard work. And there are frustrations.” The Gallup poll, conducted Aug. 4-7, has a margin of error of four percentage points and includes an oversample of African-Americans.

AFRICA Continued from page 6 regarded Black activism in America and the revolutions in Africa as fractional particles of the same struggle—differing only in location and expression. America guarded against the fractions from operating in parallel, so that no rubbed-off African influences would possibly (God forbid) augment the “Civil Rights Movement” into a “Sovereign Rights Movement.” America did experience uncertain moments in 1957 when both Dr. King and Malcolm X attended Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s inauguration in Ghana. It was a frightening omen to see two of the most visionary Black men in America interfacing ideals with the president of the first African nation to seize independence. This unprecedented meetingof-the-minds between the “formerly enslaved” and “formerly colonized” should have opened a new advent in “world history.” But here we are nearly 50 years later, still (psychologically and economically) detached from Africa and still preoccupied with notions of equality, while Asians now prosper from our homeland’s wealth. With or without the Covenant, we must fast awaken to the “geo-strategic economics” of this world, or we risk selfinduced political extinction. Regardless of how many non-Africans invest in Africa or how far Black America assimilates into Americanization, we’ll still face joint-related issues with Africa that require jointrelated solutions. The Government of Ghana realizes this fact, and as part of its 50th independence anniversary in 2007, Ghana is subsequently launching the “Joseph Project” (recognizing the Biblical Joseph who triumphed after being enslaved and reunited with his brothers). Among other things, this historic and multifaceted initiative aims to reconcile Diaspora relations and generate wealth for ourselves. Although the unknown and uncharted course of African relations is not a cure-all, the known and well charted course of Americanization is not a cure-all either. Certainly our collective long-term interests as African people would be advanced if we mended both history and relations. Based on the singularity and common origin of our struggles, our interdependency for parallel movements will not vanish with time. Undoubtedly, a nucleus of us will reestablish a significant presence in Africa and ensure that unlike 20th century-Africa, 21st century-Africa will not be an “Africa without so-called African Americans.”

TOPAZ Continued from page 17 produce multiple copies of themselves. Once a virus has gained access into one of your cells, depending on the type of virus involved, one of two things can happen: The virus uses your cell’s resources to replicate itself many times over and then breaks open (lyses) the cell so that the newly replicated viruses can leave in search of new cells to infect. Lysis effectively kills your cell. The virus incorporates itself into the DNA of your cell, which allows the virus to be passed on to each daughter cell that stems from this cell. Later on, the virus in each daughter cell can begin replicating itself as described above. Once multiple copies of the virus have been produced, the cell is lysed. Both possibilities lead to the same result: eventually, the infected cell can die due to lysis.

Conclusion Here is the key to understanding why colds and flus, when allowed to run their course while you rest, can be good for you: By and large, the viruses that cause the common cold and the flu infect mainly your weakest cells; cells that are already burdened with excessive waste products and toxins are most likely to allow viruses to infect them. These are cells that you want to get rid of anyway, to be replaced by new, healthy cells. So in the big scheme of things, a cold or flu is a truly natural tool that can allow your body to purge itself of old and damaged cells that, in the absence of viral infection, would normally take much longer to identify, destroy, and eliminate. Have you ever been amazed by how much “stuff” you could blow out of your nose while you had a cold or the flu? Embedded within all of that mucous are countless dead cells that your body is saying good bye to, largely due to the lytic effect of viruses.

So, there never needs to be a cure for the common cold, since the common cold is nature’s way of keeping you healthy over the long term. And so long as you get plenty of rest and strive to stay hydrated and properly nourished during a cold or flu, there is no need to get vaccinated or to take medications that suppress congested sinuses, a fever, or coughing. All of these uncomfortable symptoms are actually ways in which your body works to eliminate waste products and/or help your body get through a cold or flu. It’s fine to use over-thecounter pain medication like acetaminophen if your discomfort becomes intolerable or if such meds can help you get a good night’s rest. But it’s best to avoid medications that aim to suppress helpful processes such as fever, coughing, and a runny nose. ONE FINAL AND IMPORTANT NOTE ON THIS TOPIC

Because the common cold and the flu are both caused by viruses, antibiotics are not necessary. People who take antibiotics while

suffering with a cold or flu often feel slightly better because antibiotics have a mild antiinflammatory effect. But this benefit is far outweighed by the negative impact that antibiotics have on friendly bacteria that live throughout your digestive tract. In this light, if you really need help with pain management during a cold or flu, it is usually better to take a small dose of acetaminophen than it is to take antibiotics. PRESIDENTS Continued from page 17 incomes under $10,000. Harriet Tubman, who was known as the "conductor" of that earlier underground railroad, said on her first escape from slavery, "When I found I had crossed that line, I looked at my hands to see if I was the same person. There was such a glory over everything." Even after a century, the beauty of her words is powerful. We can only imagine the soaring of her soul, what a feeling that must have been when she crossed into freedom and the physical and mental shackles fell from her person. Harriet Tubman's glory was the glory of the American experience. It was a glory which had no color or religious preference or nationality. It was simply, eloquently, the universal thirst that all people have for freedom. Reagan continued: I genuinely and deeply believe the economic package we've put forth will move us toward black economic freedom, because it's aimed at lifting an entire country and not just parts of it. There's a truth to the words spoken by John F. Kennedy that a rising tide lifts all boats. Yes, I know it's been said, "What about the fellow without a boat who can't swim?" Well, I believe John Kennedy's figure of speech was referring to the benefits, which accrue to all when the economy is flourishing. PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA The "rising tide" metaphor, first used by John F. Kennedy, has been a central theme in how Obama has discussed his approach to healing the country's economic and employment troubles. During a presidential news conference on April 29, 2009, Andre Showell of Black Entertainment Television posed the following question to Obama: “Mr. President, as the entire Nation tries to climb out of this deep recession, in communities of color the circumstances are far worse. The black unemployment rate, as you know, is in the double digits. And in New York City, for example, the black unemployment rate for men is near 50 percent. My question tonight is, given this unique and desperate circumstance, what specific policies can you point to that will target these communities?" President Obama responded: Well, keep in mind that every step we're taking is designed to help all people. But folks who are most vulnerable are most likely to be helped because they need the most help. So when we passed the Recovery Act, for example, and we put in place provisions that would extend unemployment insurance or allow you to keep your health insurance, even if you've lost your job, that probably disproportionately impacted those communities that had lost their jobs. And unfortunately, the African-American community and Latino community are probably overrepresented in those ranks. When we put in place additional dollars for community health centers to ensure that people are still getting the help that they need, or we expand health insurance to millions more children through the Children's Health Insurance Program, again, those probably disproportionately impact AfricanAmerican and Latino families simply because they're the ones who are most vulnerable. They've got higher rates of uninsured in their communities. Then came that all-weather rising tide metaphor. So my general approach is that if the economy is strong,

August 27, 2011 - Page 23

that will lift all boats, as long as it is also supported by, for example, strategies around college affordability and job training, tax cuts for working families as opposed to the wealthiest that level the playing field and ensure bottom-up economic growth. And I'm confident that that will help the AfricanAmerican community live out the American Dream at the same time that it's helping communities all across the country. Okay? In June of 2009 during another news conference, Obama was asked, with the unemployment rate among African Americans projected to hit 20 percent, “Why not target intervention now to stop the bloodletting…?” Obama answered that "the best thing that I can do for the African-American community or the Latino community or the Asian community -- whatever community -- is to get the economy as a whole moving." He continued: If I don't do that, then I'm not going to be able to help anybody. So that's priority number one. It is true that in certain inner-city communities, the unemployment rate is -- was already sky high even before this recession. The ladders available for people to enter into the job market are even worse. And so we are interested in looking at proven programs that help people on a pathway to jobs. But what about the criticism that such an approach isn't targeted enough? "All right, last question," the president responded, before moving on to Suzanne Malveaux of CNN and her questions about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. In December 2009, Obama, during an interview with April Ryan of American Urban Radio Networks, laid out most clearly his philosophy on targeting blacks specifically in his jobs agenda, and reacted to criticism by some of his more popular allies who have turned critics. "Speaking of the African-American community, there seems to be a shift in black leadership, as it relates to supporting you," Ryan said. "You have the CBC that's upset with you about targeting on the jobs front –- African Americans, 15.6 percent unemployment rate, expected to go to 20 percent; mainstream America, 10 percent. Then you have black actors who supported you -- Danny Glover, who's saying that you've not changed, your administration is the same as George W. Bush. What are your thoughts about the fact that black leadership is grumbling, and the fact that people are concerned with you being the first African-American president, and they thought that there would be a little bit more compassion for black issues?" President Obama responded: "So, we have made a series of steps that make a huge difference. The only thing I cannot do is, you know, by law I can't pass laws that say I'm just helping black folks. I'm the President of the entire United States. What I can do is make sure that I am passing laws that help all people, particularly those who are most vulnerable and most in need. That, in turn, is going to help lift up the African-American community." "But we're going to have a hole that we have to dig out of for a long time, and it has to do with structural impediments to opportunity that we are going to continue to try to knock down. But it's not going to happen in one year; it's going to take not just one term, but it's going to take years. The important point is that we're moving in the right direction." This month the black unemployment rate has hovered around 16 percent among blacks and is even higher in particularly hard-hit areas of the country.

Justice | Democracy | Hope | Love... The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial is conceived of as an engaging landscape experience tied to other landscapes and monuments, not as a single object or memorial dominating the site. The composition of the memorial utilizes landscape elements to powerfully convey four fundamental and recurring themes throughout Dr. King’s message: justice, democracy, hope and love. The semicircular geometry of the memorial, juxtaposed within the triangular configuration of the site, engages the Tidal Basin and frames views to the water.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial The main entrance through the crescent-shaped inscription wall is aligned along the axis of the Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials, placing this memorial directly in line with the larger democratic ideals that form the context for King’s words and deeds. The memorial is envisioned as a quiet and receptive space, yet at the same time, powerful and emotionally evocative, reflecting the spirit of the message Dr. King delivered and the role he played in society. The King Memorial is intended to be personally transformative for visitors, building a sense of commitment to the promise of positive change and active citizenship. Drawing from Dr. King’s own rich metaphorical language, the themes of “the Man, the Movement and the Message” are intertwined into a larger experience of place.

FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES CHANGES TO DEDICATION DAY PLANS Washington (August 25, 2011) - This evening Harry E. Johnson, Sr. president and CEO of the Washington DC Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation, Inc. released the following statement about Dedication Day. Thank you for coming back this evening for a further update on our Dedication plans. In consultation with the National Park Service, the Mayor’s office and FEMA, it is with a heavy heart and enormous disappointment that we announce that, in the interest of public safety, we are forced to change our plans. Here is the new schedule. First, the Friday schedule will continue as planned. Second, on Saturday we will hold the National Prayer Service at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. This will be the final official event of the Dedication week. We have worked with the Park Service to ensure that the Memorial will be open to the public, weather permitting, on Saturday. The Memorial will be open Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 12 noon. Finally, the official Dedication ceremony will be moved to a date yet determined in September or October. We will announce those details when we have them. For now, we wanted to make sure you had this information as soon as possible. So many worked tirelessly to dedicate the dream and make this Memorial a reality. We owe a special debt of gratitude to the Foundation staff, our generous sponsors, and to you, the public. In the words of Dr. King, “we must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.” With that in mind, let’s remember the spirit of the Memorial - justice, democracy, hope and love. Dedication Event Schedule: The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial will be open to the public on the Friday, August 25 from noon until 10 p.m. and Saturday, August 26 from 8 a.m. to noon.
