An Introduction to Business for African American Youth In an effort to stimulate creativity and selfempowerment within our Black youth, I would like to present a book that is beneficial to the African American household. “An Introduction to Business for African American Youth” by Abner McWhorther is a timeless guide to stimulating your child’s creativity. This book presents the African American youth with fun and creative jobs that they can start NOW!. Jobs that will allow them to make money, learn about business and prevent an idol mind. Within our communities and in light of the negative distracting culture that our children are faced with, it’s important to give the youth vision and options. Starting the youth young, and teaching them about business is priceless. Not only does it strengthen the minds of our youth, it allows them to develop a sense of independence which counteracts the sense of dependency which can linger into adulthood. Each job featured in the book is one that can be ongoing, seasonal or just for the summer. The alarming statistics show that less than 14 Black male youths out of 100 have jobs** Considering the fluctuations in the job market, adults as well as children need to have many tools in their “mental carry case”. In my opinion a person should never be without a job, even while looking for other employment. There are many creative ways to bring in money. Ways that are both fun and satisfying. This gives our youth a sense of self-worth. With the governments idea of stimulating jobs for the youth being simply training at job training programs, I can tell you first hand many of these programs are just distractions. Many times when you have completed these programs you are not given a job and simply serve to satisfy the minds of the politically correct, who don’t have a solution to youth unemployment. As pointed out by 26 year-old Maya Black who confronted Liberal Democrats leader Nick Clegg focusing only on job training even for the most basic jobs has become just a “glorified piece of paper”* The youth need jobs, and need jobs now. The youth should not be discouraged at an early age and feel as they have no control over their future.

Culture, Constitution, and Religious Conformity By Ezrah Aharone The Juan Williams incident and the rhetoric of Bill O’Reilly that caused Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar to walkoff the set of The View, fan the flames of an unbroken theme in history where no other “belief” has arguably been as unifying yet divisive, peaceful yet violent as religion. Although the proposed Mosque at Ground Zero is widening the gap of intolerance between some Christians and Muslims, the tragedy of 911 (which involved extremist Muslims) is no more a window into Islam than the Atlantic Slave Trade (which involved extremist Christians) is a window into Christianity. Extremists have historically slain innumerable others in the name of all 3 major faiths of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. And just as there are doctrinal distinctions among the world’s estimated 1.9 billion Christians such as Mormons, Anglicans, Catholics and Coptics of Ethiopia in East Africa, there are likewise distinctions among the world’s estimated 1.6 billion Muslims such as Sunnis, Shias, Ahmadiyyas and Murids of Senegal in West Africa. So it’s either dimwitted or deliberate agitation for someone like O’Reilly, who is Harvard-educated, to wholesale indict and generalize that “Muslims killed Americans on 9-11.” While the masses of Christians would never fathom blowing-up a building as did Timothy McVeigh, the masses of Muslims would likewise never fathom flying an airplane into skyscrapers as on 9-11. But let’s be unpopularly frank but true about something . . . Islam, in any form, has been historically depreciated by this establishment as being alien and adverse to the cultural and ideological makeup of Americanization. Whether you agree or disagree with his comments or firing, this stigmatic view of Islam adds to why an otherwise cosmopolitan Black man like Juan Williams is orientated to get spooked if he “sees people in Muslim garbs boarding airplanes.” Mosques and Muslims have long been viewed by this establishment with national security concerns that predate 9-11, given that Islamic theology and practices reside mostly outside of Westernized input and influence. In a certain sense, Islam is classified somewhat as being a quasi political, judicial, and cultural system-unto-itself, that competes far more than it complements Americanization. Quite contrary to the presumption of being a compassionate “welcoming call” to embrace “all religions,” America was constitutionally founded with Freedom of Religion as a safeguard to prevent theocratic rule. It was never meant to harbinger all religions to come and culturally or ideologically saturate society. Hence, when it comes to religious freedoms, there have always been seeming breaches between “culture and constitution” as the mosque in question fittingly demonstrates. The concept of Freedom of Religion is one thing, constitutionally. But culturally, the AngloSaxon diaspora of this nation is wedded unequivocally to Protestant brands of Christianity that are nationalistically bundled with patriotism and militarism . . . Which is why Christmas, for example, is the only state-recognized religious holiday; and why Congress decreed 1983 as the “Year of the Bible,” proclaiming that Biblical beliefs led to America’s settlement; and why soldiers are mandated by the Oath of Enlistment to “Solemnly swear to support and defend the Constitution of the United States . . . so help [them] God.” Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, who “interprets” the constitution, remarked that “A religious-neutral government does not fit with an America that reflects belief in God in everything from its money to its military.” As such, US Protestantism is politically allied with Judaism and Catholicism, and despite all the hype about religious freedoms, there’s always been an unex-

pressed yet well-understood “cultural expectancy” and “nationalistic thrust” for all other Americans to conform accordingly. In fact, another unpopular but frank truth is that, African Americans are largely Protestant – not because of Freedom of Religion – but because Euro-Americans are largely Protestant. Our “style” of worship differs, but because our enslavement was so complete, our religious precepts are mirror replicas of theirs, even though Christianity has various doctrinal distinctions as earlier cited. Due to their rigors, if they hypothetically were Buddhists, the majority of us would no doubt be Buddhists too. This same thrust of conformity and expectancy is precisely what pressurized President Obama – after he seemingly expressed support for the mosque – to straddle the fuzzy line between “culture and constitution,” by saying he wasn’t commenting on the “wisdom,” but rather the “right” of Muslims to build the mosque. With the looming Tea Partiers and Glenn Beck idealists, coupled with 20 percent of Americans thinking he’s a closet Muslim, Obama is under a religious microscope like no other president. He must coat each word with caution whenever he speaks about Islam, Israel, or Middle East politics, so that he isn’t perceived as being a “Muslim sympathizer” or veering from the long-held cultural traditionalism that politically synchronizes America’s “faith and foreign policy.” At core, the mosque controversy isn’t merely about religious freedom. Nor is the Juan Williams matter merely about free speech. And certain criticisms against Obama aren’t mere partisan differences. On a deeper level, these issues are indicators that the conformed ways of the original paradigms of Americanization are colliding with today’s multiethnic paradigms, causing the erstwhile boundaries of freedom and equality to be stretched to limits that Thomas Jefferson and his contemporaries never imagined or intended.

n Saturday, August 27th, an adult film performer was tested HIV positive, prompting a temporary shutdown the following Monday of adult film productions across Los Angeles until further testing can confirm the results. An industry trade group said this, “Until we know for sure, we’ve asked the industry to have a moratorium on production.” Diane Duke, executive director of the Free Speech Coalition, a Canoga Park-based porn industry trade group, was aware of this possible HIV case but she would not say how her group learned about it. Duke have spoken with porn industry companies – including those at well-known studios, such as Hustler and Evil Angel –and agreed to the temporary shutdown. Duke said she could not release the performer’s name, age or gender. Further testing will likely be completed within a week, she added. Her group will notify performers who had sex with the potentially infected person so they can get tested. No report of how she will conduct the search. However, there is speculation that the performer, who got the tested for HIV positive, did the testing at an out-of-state facility. A facility which Duke said, “that it [out-of-state facility] does not appear to have protocols or procedures in place for medical follow-ups (including generational testing).” Los Angeles County health officials and state health regulators, who have been involved with such testing in the past, were not notified of the test because it was performed out of state, Duke said. Despite the positive claims of frequent use of testing facilities—where porn industries require their performers to be tested every 30 days and show proof of a clean test before they perform, including the new testing data base that Duke launched last month the Adult Performer Health and Safety Services, designed to provide producers and agents with access to results from numerous testing centers—to withhold the use of condoms, it was still not enough to stop the spread of HIV. Hauntingly enough, there was actually case like this: AIM Medical Associates officials, who operate porn industry’s databases on test results, opened the Sherman Oaks-based clinic in 1998, and had drawn criticism for opposing condom use in porn and insisting that frequent tests could protect performers from HIV. They continued to defend their position even after

performer Derrick Burts tested HIV positive at AIM last year. Burts has since joined an effort by Los Angeles-based AIDS Healthcare Foundation to get a measure placed on the city’s June 2012 ballot that would require adult film performers to use condoms in porn productions that seek Los Angeles city film permits. Backers of the ballot measure must submit a petition with at least 41,138 qualifying signatures by Dec. 23 to place the proposal on the June ballot. It would be the first time that voters were asked to weigh in on the issue. Michael Weinstein, president of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, said the latest possible HIV infection showed an “outrageous disregard for the health and safety of performers and the community at large” and demonstrates why testing is not an adequate substitute for condoms. He called on L.A. city officials to pull all adult film permits until condoms are mandated. “How many performers must become infected with HIV and other serious STDs before the industry will clean up its act and government will do the right thing?” he said. (LA TIMES) If the porn industry can’t run away from HIV/AIDS, so can’t you. HIV has risen exponentially in the past years, and it takes one slip up of a glove to ruin everything you have worked for. Realistically speaking, HIV/AIDS is alarming high in our black community. While the porn industry may advertise “cool” by not putting on a condom, take upon yourself to be “cool” and put on a condom, and better yet, GO GET TESTED! It may not sound fun, but make it fun. On a date, go to Planned Parenthood then go see a movie. You can still be fun and spontaneous, but at least you guys are serious about practicing “safe” sex.

“Young Black gay and bisexual men are the only population in the U.S. in which the pace of HIV’s spread is increasing, according to a startling study released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention” (www.cdc.gov/nchhstp/newsroom/HIVIncidencePressRelease.html). (Black AIDS Institute) In my campaign for the newly drawn 79th Assembly District, healthcare is one of the top issues. This article is blunt. Brace yourself. “In the United States, African Americans make up about 47% of the total HIV-positive population and more than half of new HIV cases, despite making up only 12% of the population. African American women are 19 times more likely to have HIV than white women.” (Wikipedia) AIDS STILL KILLS! Although there are drugs which mitigate the effects of HIV, PEOPLE – that I know and you know – ARE STILL DYING FROM AIDS! In any case, do you want to have to take (more) drugs for the rest of your life to keep from dying? Now the hard part: AIDS is a behaviorally spread disease. 88% of HIV transmission comes from SEX! 12% from injection drug use. (You wonder how the injection drug users got it?) ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR FREAKIN’ MIND?!?! You are killing yourself with sex! Like alcohol and crack, this is a trick of the Devil. What you’re using for pleasure is killing you. Sex, and how you have sex, is a CHOICE. Some of you are making some really dumb and deadly choices. Do you want to die? In a 2008 study, the Center for Disease Control found that, of the study participants who were men who had sex with men (“MSM”), almost one in five (19%) had HIV and “among those who were infected, nearly half (44 percent) were unaware of their HIV status.” (Wikipedia) So, where is the MONEY for prevention? President Obama is preparing to bring significant dollars to bear on the problem. But will we benefit? “Because [Obama’s] National HIV/AIDS Strategy (NHAS) is a priority endeavor for the U.S. government…he proposed a special fund to support the implementation of the Strategy. If approved… this would establish a fund of approximately $60 million dollars that would be administered by the Assistant Secretary for Health whose office would work closely with… community partners to determine the most strategic ways to use these resources.” (Black AIDS Institute) In San Diego your community partners are The Kemet Coalition (www.kemetcoalition.org) and The San Diego Black Health Associates (www.sdbha.org). They are working to make sure these funds get to San Diego and to the Black community. YOU’VE GOT TO DO YOUR PART! Contact them and tell them you want to help them get this money for your community. Historical Balboa Park House of Pacific Relations Features the Republic of Panama’s Annual Lawn Program By Delsa D. Dixon AN DIEGO - Did you know that San Diego’s Balboa Park’s name was chosen by a City of San Diego Commissioner in honor of the Spanish Conquistador who first discovered the Pacific and who first settle in what is known as la Provincia de Darien, Republic of Panama? The Conquistador’s name was Vasco Nunez de Balboa? and his statue is erected in La Plaza de Balboa in Panama City, Panama. In addition, his name was chosen to celebrate man’s progress and achievement at the PanamaCalifornia Exposition of 1915 – 1916, which also celebrated the marvel of the construction of the Panama Canal, as the first ship to sail through the Canal made its first North American stop at the Port of San Diego. On Sunday, August 28, 2011, The House of Panama took the opportunity to really display the friendliness, happiness and inclusiveness of its people , its language, its music and its diversity of food and folkloric attire. Did you know that Panamenos/Panamanians, a “mestizo” (mixed) peoples’ folklore, customs, music, clothing and language stems primarily from Indigenous, African and Europeans (67% Spaniards) descendants, with a smaller influence of Caucasian and Chinese influence? The name Panama is an Indigenous word that means abundance of fishes, butterflies and trees; pretty descriptive of what will find in our tropical land! Did you know that most Blacks in Panama have a legacy that goes back to arriving with the Conquistadores, as a result of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade or as part of the West-Indies, Caribbean influx during the construction of the Panama Canal? Did you know that Panama’s primary language is Spanish and its primary religion is Catolica/Catholic? At Sunday’s event, people from around the world, and the San Diego community members, stood in line to get their “ taste” of Panama; others were captivated by the beauty and grace of the folkloric dancers and models. As the Mistress of Ceremony, I enjoyed the audience’s

Q&A participation and their race to the stage to get an opportunity to win a raffled trip for 2 to the Republic of Panama. House of Panama President Walter Amedee, his Board Members and volunteers were busy on the lawn making sure that all went well. Awww… if it wasn’t for the vision of just one woman, Dorotea Lindsay, the House of Panama would have remained an illusion and I would not have an engaging short story to tell! Yet, there’s more to learn so take a moment and stop by the House of Panama website at www.houseofpanama.org as you might just want to become a member (you don’t have to be Panamanian). On behalf of Los Panamenos, I would like thank the House of Pacific Relations for giving a voice and a stage to the various existing, and future, international cottages that are represented at the world renown, historical Balboa Park. In addition, we would like to thank the San Diego Monitor News for sharing our story and we thank the Black Business Boot Camp associates for attending Panama’s Lawn program and for providing their professional, business support, specifically Tracy Allen of 9to5Not Business Solutions (Video and Internet Marketing) and to Odelle Mason of Pre-paid Legal.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Made Easy Greetings from Greg “The Internet Guy” I have been running some test accounts with a new method of search engine optimization; it’s amazing how complex the Internet is. These test accounts show me that this method is HIGHLY effective and time efficient, allowing me to provide a superior service at a lower price point. It would boggle your mind if I went into any depth, but I’d like to just break things down for you a little. The number one thing to remember is that content is king, and having relevant content is the main target. We’ve all heard about internet spyders, well their mission is to cruise the Internet and gather info and report back what it finds, these spyders are testing you! They give you a grade based on a “curve” so to speak..by comparing your site against all the other sites competing for placement with similar keyword phrases. By allowing a firm like mine to manage your website marketing efforts, we prepare your website for the test, of course you will get an A+, this will equate to top placement and ranking in the search results. These spyders read information written in a certain language, (LSI) Latent Semantic Indexing format. For example assume you were trying to rank high for the keyword “Dog”, a search engine will look for “canine”, or “pooch” simply because they are synonyms of the word “Dog”. Now if your site is rich with this content, you will be able to beat out millions of other pages that show up. Some people say reciprocal link exchanges are dead, we agree that traditionally that is true, only if you are linking to someone outside of your industry, which will dilute your theme, which means that every time you link to someone outside of your target theme you appear less of an authority…which is who Google wants to reward. This makes the Internet easy to navi-

gate if the resource centers or popular sites appear conveniently on the top right at our eye level, makes sense right? Our process will employ a system of exchanging one keyword text links with descriptions with all the other members in the same category. Your site will be giving an outbound link to all members of your category as well, this as you can see is a win-win for everyone! Think of the Internet as a spider web, the numerous links will make your web larger. Every time someone new joins the link collective, you will be notified via email, then you are able to decide if they are up to your standards or not. We also provide on-page SEO and oneway inbound linking to secure brownie points from the search engines. Consider inbound links to be compared to endorsements, the spyders use these endorsements to follow the links from one site to another, this is called being “spydered”. The more links, the more spydering, which equals more website activity which the search engines rewards by giving top 10 rankings. Our system will continue to build more links, and very quickly the search engines will begin to reward your site with higher rankings just because the status and overall picture has changed. Did you know that one-way inbound links make up for 70% of your grade when ranking for keywords? We also have the ability to properly optimize press releases so that you will become an authority on your subject by accelerating your websites social media recognition with the search engines. We can also link your Twitter, Facebook, Myspace and Linked In, through our system we can add new categories and posts through our system. Of course now that you’ve climbed the ranks you start to get noticed by the community and traffic starts to filter to your website, Continued on page 22

Just Keeping It Real With Angela Harris Relationship Discussions

Is your child being bullied or bullying?

Linme’s Gourmet SOUL FOOD and Catering Food trucks have become a recognized part of the food service industry. Local resident Mechiel Holman recognized this, and began her own food truck business. She says that, “If the mountain can’t come to Mohammed, then Mohammed will go to the mountain.” Her truck delivers fresh soul food to your door, business, or event – or anyone else who wants a taste of soul food. If you need her, call her at (619) 631-2042.

Last Thursday two ladies and I had occasion to discuss challenges children in our charge either were experiencing or had experienced in the past on this issue of being bullied or having a child who actually did the bullying. One of the most common consensuses that came about our conversation was the fact that each of us intervened on behalf of our children or those in our charge so that each child could enjoy school without the fear of being bullied or other children being bullied by our charge. Example: While in the 4th grade my niece was provided with sack lunches which were real tasty. There was this one really big girl who would daily sit next to my niece and make her feel extremely uncomfortable as she ate her lunch. After sharing that story with me I approached the young girl the conversation went something like this: “Hey Alicia, Briana tells me you seem to like what she brings to school for lunch.” She hesitated, and was worried. I continued, “Well If you have questions you would Alicia I’ll make a deal with you if you leave Briana alone during lunch like answered or topics discussed, time I promise to send you a surprise every Friday, deal?” She grinned please send all questions to facefrom ear to ear and said, “agreed.” Every Friday she waited to see what book.com/connectwithangelaharher surprise was. Briana and Alicia became better acquaintances. ris or email: Someone right now is having a problem with this and is saying: “I theharrisgroup@cox.net or would have just told that child to leave my child alone and would have twitter@KeepingitealAH. told the principal and even the parent to make the child stop.” For more articles Question, how does that create peace in the atmosphere? Right, it www.keepingitrealwithangela doesn’t. Here are the lessons I’ve learned in dealing with an individu- harris.blogspot.com al who bullies: When I address the child without accusation or condemnation the child is extremely receptive. By addressing the child in a kind compromising way there wasn’t any further tension between my niece, her, or her posse. I let the child know that I wasn’t angry with her and that I wanted to find a way to make her happy too. You see her family didn’t have the means to send special lunches. Don’t get me wrong I am not condoning the behavior I am thankful that I could recognize a hurt within this child that I could assist her in feeling just a little bit better about her life. I showed by example to my niece how to handle adversity without turning the situation into an all-out war. The young girl learned that she didn’t have to be mean and intimidating to receive kindness. By the way I helped with homework after school and Alicia would be right there thriving and enjoying the help she received. When I hugged my niece I hugged her too. Other kids witnessed the way it was handled and prayerfully learned from the experience. Someone is saying well that was elementary school what about when they get older? This same niece had some inseparable friends early on. They frequented our home, went places with us, and even one girl when her mother died I attended the funeral. Something, til this day I still don’t know what happened, they hated the sight of each other. No one was speaking to each other and other friends were being berated for being friends with who was now the “enemy”. At first I didn’t say anything I just observed. When they saw me they spoke but not to each other. I heard harsh conversations on the phone and decided that that was it I didn’t like the tenor. I told my niece to her horror that I was going to pull them all together. I did and the conversation went something like this: “Hey ladies I believe everyone has told me that you are Christian’s right?” They all replied right. “Okay so would Jesus be happy with how you all are treating each other?” No one said anything. I continued “Okay let’s agree that He wouldn’t. I am not suggesting that you all will ever be good friends again, but are you all going to stand here and tell me you can’t at least cordially say hi to each other and keep it moving?” They all agreed that they could be civil and would stop the mean mugging. This didn’t resolve their friendship instantaneously, but it stop the obvious hostility and they began dealing with each other cordially. One year later my niece ran for ASB president and invited her campaign team over to make posters and other give a ways. Who do you suppose was a part of this campaign? You got it those very girls. So you see it’s not the age of the youth it’s how we choose to deal with them. If more parents listened to their children and got more constructively involved with their children’s school life we would not have so many shootings or suicides. Parents stop telling or believing that this trauma is just a part of growing up. It’s not natural. Kids can be and usually are cruel. Our children are not equipped to deal with it but we should be. So do your children a favor as they head back to school: Be there for them in every way. Visit the school, teachers, be a part of their homework and ask them genuinely how their day went. If you’re not really interested in their education, neither will they be. Set standards and expectations for your children in the home and away from the home and stick to them. Get to know their friends. Allow your home to be a safe place for them to come over. Also get to know your child’s friends parents. Ensure them that whatever the issue you are there for them. Ensure your behavior is representative as to how to handle adversity. If you hit, they will hit. If you cuss they will cuss. If you talk about people behind their back, they will talk about people behind their back. If you’re a hater, then they will be haters. Be observant. Your children will not tell you everything. So as our children return to school let’s ensure that we are a part of their positive learning experience.

SAN DIEGO MONITOR WHAT TO EAT TO GET SOME SLEEP The San Diego Monitor

By Lady Topaz If you are following sound advice on how to get a good night’s rest, and still having trouble sleeping soundly, you may want to try eating a bedtime snack that combines a concentrated dietary source of tryptophan with a healthy carbohydrate-rich food. Tryptophan is an amino acid that your body cannot make; you must obtain it from the foods that you eat. Once tryptophan crosses your blood-brain barrier to gain access to your brain, it is used to make a hormone called serotonin. Serotonin acts within your body to promote feelings of sleepiness, calm, and relaxation. Without adequate levels of serotonin in your system, you might have a hard time feeling sleepy enough to rest soundly. And, without adequate levels of tryptophan within your brain, you may not be able to produce significant amounts of serotonin. The challenge with shuttling tryptophan through to your brain is that it has to compete with other amino acids for access to the limited number of channels that line your bloodbrain barrier. And tryptophan tends to be outnumbered by other amino acids in natural foods. The key to getting enough tryptophan to your brain to sleep well at night is to combine a tryptophan-rich food with a carbohydraterich food. This is because ingesting a carbohydrate-rich food causes your body to release insulin, which diverts many of your other amino acids away from your brain, leaving tryptophan with little competition to cross your blood-brain barrier to gain access to your brain. Aside from heated turkey, and hot milk, here is a list of some healthy foods that are naturally rich in tryptophan: Beans Whole grains, including rice

Lentils Chickpeas Hazelnuts Peanuts Eggs Sunflower seeds Sesame seeds Miso (fermented soy beans) Unsweetened soy milk Raw dairy products (if you can tolerate dairy) If you combine any of the foods listed above with a healthy carbohydrate-rich food as an evening snack, your body should be able to produce enough serotonin to facilitate a good night’s rest. Keep in mind that this should be an evening snack, in a small portion, just enough to satiate the Sandman. What follows are some suggestions for healthy meals and snacks that combine a tryptophan-rich food with a carbohydrate-rich food: Rice with miso soup Whole grain pita with hummus (add tomato and red onion slices for flavor) Whole grain crackers with organic peanut, or raw almond, butter Unsweetened whole grain cereal with soy, almond, or hemp milk Rice with lentils Rice, black beans, and guacamole Hummus with steamed broccoli Eggs with whole grain toast Clearly, the possible combinations of tryptophan-rich foods and carbohydrate-rich foods are endless. Be creative and enjoy the process of figuring out which combinations suit your palate and help you sleep like a baby. Here’s to your good health! ********************* For additional information on healthy, holistic, nutritional supplements that will assist you with your healthy lifestyle visit Topaz’s website at: www.sherrytheus.isagenix.com or e-mail her with your thoughts and/or inquiries at topazstjames@gmail.com.

Ending Poverty by Creating Black Wealth in 2011 The first place to end poverty is in your own mindset. If you believe that you are supposed to live in an unending state of poverty and hopelessness, then that is exactly where you will continue to find yourself. A self-destructive component of a “slave mentality” is to believe that wealth acquisition and economic power is ordained and limited only for the sons and daughters of former slave masters who are entitled to wealth based on their historical inheritance of privilege and power over the flow of money. Too many people in our communities do not believe that they can achieve financial success and wealth. That is a sad and inaccurate understanding of the opportunities at hand Eddie Price today. 2011- 2012 ought to be the year of focus on building and expanding Black-owned businesses and constructing a Maketing Director more secure economic foundation and sustainability for the expansion of wealth-building in the African American com619-616-5890 munity. Too often we get so distracted dealing with all the bad news that happens each day in the world in which we now live that we lose sight of how to improve our overall quality of life through education, hard work, diligence, economic development, and a refocused mindset that maintains the highest of social and financial aspirations. We have to expand our vision and mission. Ending the poverty in the African American community will not happen overnight. Building more wealth in our communities will also not be done overnight. There are not going to be quick easy fixes to our financial status. But, there are real solutions to our problems. We just need to focus more on establishing stronger economic and revenue-generating strategies and businesses during this period of time. Yet, we can do more and should do more today to increase the economic income and investment into our communities and families. Neither poverty nor wealth is a permanent condition for the Black community. The point here is that as we build more successful businesses that serve the economic interests of Black people, we will be stronger to remove poverty from both out mindset and our socioeconomic condition. For those who are doing better today financially and for those who will do better in the future, please do not forget about reaching back to provide more economic development opportunities for more of our sisters and brothers who really want a better quality of life. The more we acquire or have, the more we should give back and lend a helping hand. I HAVE A PLAN !!!

No More Bloating and GAS! On my summer tour to the east coast to visit my sisters and friends the train became a very good friend of mine. I could travel from state to state without having to go through an extensive search and pay ridiculous baggage fees. I rode the train from Chicago to Charleston, West Virginia. It was such an amazing ride with breath taking views of the luscious mountains and wild life. I was in awe of my sleeper cabin, it came equipped with all your latest gadgets; blow dryer, shower, toilet and folding table. I put all my things away to head upstairs to the observatory room. Gazing out the squeaky clean windows I saw a doe leaping across the field a bird flying over the plain looking for its next meal. The customer service on board was impeccable to the finest detail. Did you know that all your meals are included when you purchase a sleeper cabin? I had no clue, and was amazed at the quality and the taste of the food. If you’re looking for your next family vacation and you don’t want to drive try it out for yourself. You may want to start off with a short trip to get acquainted with the train and its style. I suggest going to Solana Beach, it’s a wonderful Daycation stop. A one way ticket is only $15 per person. The train stops in the heart of boutiques, café’s, and restaurants. You can spend the day at the beach wallowing in the water or taken in the sun. The water is just absolutely beautiful to watch crashing up against the shore from the train. Like most west coast beaches the water is extremely cold and can take some time to get your body acclimated to it. Of course, the kids won’t care how cold it is they just want to play but it always takes me about an hour to get my whole body in the water. After spending the day splashing around, trying to surf, and playing beach volley ball, I can’t wait to hit up the boutiques. I love jewelry especially homemade jewelry that no one else has. I always get very good deals from the vendors. My next train trip is going to be to Santa Barbara; I’ve never been there and have wanted to go for the past four years. I gather that I am going to have to go by myself on this one and tell you all about my experience. The great thing that the Gattea company features to its customers and to those who want to learn more about the tea is live testimonies given by those who have used the tea themselves. Theses testimonies have been featured on the Gattea radio show that’s featured on 106.3 radio station in Chicago, on the Gattea.tv website and also can be seen live at the Swap-o-Rama flea market in Alsip, IL. I have seen a few of the testimonies both via video and also live in person and it’s a great thing to be able to have someone share their excitement and satisfaction about something that actually works for them and shows them the results that they want. But this week I want to examine what’s truly behind these testimonies, the people and their stories. T he Gattea Company started in 2005 and over the past 6 years thousands of people have used the tea and shared their story with others to encourage them to use the tea to help them. The tea is marketed as a stress leaving tea that helps with gas and bloating and over 75% of those who share their experience with Gattea are able to boast that they have seen the tea give them these true results along with other benefits, such as an increase in energy, weight loss, change in sex drive, and also their skin clearing up. The great thing about Gattea testimonies are their diversity: there is a testimony from people of all shapes and sizes, races, agesthey have them all. No two testimonies are the same, each has something special that can grab the attention of almost anyone, and there is something there for everybody to relate to. Over the years there are a few iconic or well known testimonies that are fan favorites: the 9 year old girl who lost all the gas off her stomach and is no longer insecure about her looks and is free to be as carefree about what she wears and dose, the 36 year old woman who has more energy and has lost 30 pounds and looks like a new woman, or the 26 year old man who has become more active in his life and lost what is known to us as the “beer belly”. Each statement of success is different, but all have 2 common themes: their results from using Gattea and the desire to spread their success with other to help educate them. But don’t let me spoil what you should enjoy, to view the testimonies themselves you can go to www.gattea.tv or www.gattea.com.

AMERICANS ARE THIRSTY FOR CLEANER WATER: Thousands rally to highlight America’s water crisis and fight proposed cuts to the Environmental Protection Agency Washington, D.C. — Nearly 2,000 Americans gathered today in dozens of cities as part of a Green The Block “National Day of Action”, created to address the nation’s water crisis and challenge efforts by the US House of Representatives to cut nearly $1 billion from clean water initiatives. Green The Block — a national campaign created by Green For All and the Hip-Hop Caucus to get low-income and minority communities involved in green initiatives — chose to focus on water because of the crisis threatening communities across the country. 250,000 water mains break annually because of crumbling infrastructure, wasting 1.7 trillion gallons of water a year. According to the National Resource Defense Council, by the year 2050 more than 1100 counties in America will face a higher risk of water shortages because of global warming. And, every year, 20 million Americans get sick because of contaminated water due to untreated waste. “Families shouldn’t be put in danger just because they’re thirsty,” says Phaedra EllisLamkins, CEO of Green For All. “Our nation’s antiquated water network needs repair; our waterways need to be free of pollution. It’s time for our elected leaders to put our health first. We cannot accept waste in our water; we can’t let our good water go to waste.” Efforts to ensure the quality of our nation’s water supply are being undermined in Congress. Recently, the US House Interior, Environment and Related Agencies Subcommittee passed a bill that would cut the EPA’s Fiscal Year 2012 budget by $1.5 billion dollars, or 18%. The largest cut — nearly $1 billion — would come from clean water efforts. In the face of these significant challenges, as part of the Green The Block campaign, Americans from California to Oklahoma to New York decided to take action in a variety of ways — including educating others about public health issues, showing the benefits of green infrastructure and teaching others how to conserve. T.I. Accused of Tour Bus Bait and Switch

Pecolia Vance

TMZ has learned ... the reason T.I. was hauled back to prison from his halfway house is that he allegedly misled prison officials into thinking he'd take a low-key mode of transportation from the prison to the halfway house -- and a tricked out tour bus isn't low-key. Law enforcement sources tell TMZ -- when a prisoner is incarcerated in a low or medium security prison ... prison officials can allow the inmate to use a private, unescorted mode of transportation to travel from the prison facility to the halfway house. During the process of approving such a transfer, the prisoner must state specifically what mode of transportation he or she will be using. Our sources tell us ... T.I. informed prison officials he would be taking some sort of van, but made no mention of the high-end, pimped out tour bus. We're told prison officials felt T.I. should have fully disclosed the nature of his party bus. Neither drugs nor alcohol were found on the bus. And get this ... law enforcement sources tell us ... when the U.S. Marshals arrived at the halfway house to take T.I. back to prison, the halfway house honcho actually got into an argument with them, saying it was ridiculous to send him back for such an alleged violation. But the Marshals had their orders, and took T.I. back to the pokey. Hey ... we're guessing there wasn't a box for "Tour Bus" on the form.

Muriel’s Obituary Muriel Jean Sweet was the second of seven children born to Emma Lee Sweet and Garland Wesley Sweet on May 27, 1950. The family moved to San Diego from Yuma, Arizona when she was eight years old. She attended Balboa Elementary School, Memorial Junior High and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1968, where she was voted head varsity cheerleader and sophomore class president. Her only son, Gaylan Terrell Sweet, was born on June 2, 1968. Muriel furthered her education and received her Bachelor Degree in Arizona in 1998. She was saved and filled with the Holy Ghost in 1978 and received her evangelist license under Bishop J.A. Blake, Sr. She married Charles Payne in San Diego on May 25, 1986, left and spent the next 14 years in Tucson, Arizona. She was CEO/Founder of her non-profit organization, Women’s Intrafaith, and had a long-running cable show and hosted numerous women conferences. She also hosted several radio shows in Arizona. In 2000, she moved to Atlanta, Georgia and concentrated on writing books. Muriel has authored three published books: Thotful Thots, No Stoppin’ Those Preachin’ Women, and A Family Called Job. She was in the process of writing her fourth book, Faithing Cancer” to infuse cancer victims with the same undying faith that she breathed until her very last breath. Muriel was the epitome of good stewardship. She faithfully paid her tithes every month, oftentimes using it to help the down-trodden and needy. She spent her money wisely, leaving behind two beautifully-furnished homes in Atlanta. More than anything, Muriel will be remembered for being “Muriel”. She never passed an opportunity to compliment anyone – whether she knew them or not – and you would never know that she was in pain! Her great sense of humor and outgoing personality made total strangers feel like they’d known her for years. When approached by the homeless, she’d leave them with smiles on their faces, hope in their heart from her words of encouragement, and a hug – no matter how “lowly”. Muriel’s memory will forever remain etched in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. Muriel leaves a legacy of truly being a woman of God, a loving mother, grandmother, and an incredible sister. She is gone, but will never be forgotten from the hearts of her dutiful son, Gaylan Sweet-Williams, San Diego, her granddaughter, Jasmine Sweet, Miami, Florida, her sister, Bettye Sweet, Los Angeles, California, her brother, Raymond Kelly Sweet of San Diego, California, her sister-in-law, Dee Dee Sweet of San Diego, an aunt, Bonnie Jones of Anaheim, California, another aunt, Odessa Sweet, El Centro, California, Charles Payne, Tucson, Arizona, nephews and nieces, grandnephews and grand-nieces, great-grand nephews and great-grand nieces, a plethora of cousins and friends from Los Angeles, San Diego, Brawley, El Centro, Atlanta, Georgia, Tucson, Arizona, and last, but not least, Oklahoma.
