San Diego’s purchasing director resigns Hildred Pepper, San Diego’s director of purchasing and contracting for more than three years, resigned last week following a bureaucratic shake-up that saw his depart ment lose many of its responsibilities for overseeing capital projects. The announcement of Pepper ’s departure and other personnel changes were included in a memo Monday from the Mayor’s Of fice to the City Council. Pepper, 54, made roughly $144,000 annually. His last day was Thursday. No explanation was given for his resignation and Pepper didn’ t return a phone message left at his home. The hiring of Pepper in 2008 drew scrutiny a year later when The San Diego Union-Tribune questioned whether city officials were aware of several critical audits about contracts at Detroit Public Schools, where Pepper served as contracting chief. An outside auditing firm later said the city didn’ t conduct a thorough Hildred Pepper Jr. background check before hiring Pepper . The audit didn’ t find an y wrongdoin g by city officials or Pepper , but it did question whether city of ficials did their due diligence before offering him the job. Specifically, the Union-T ribune reported that Pepper resigned from the Detroit job in August 2007, one day after school district of ficials learned he had asked for approval to pay $1.2 million to a company under investigation by the FBI — even though the compa ny had already been paid. That FBI investigation involved $46 million in wire transfers that the Detroit district’ s risk-management department made to companies without approval. Pepper said he played a key role in bringing the wire transfers to light and has cooperated with federal investi gators. In San Diego, Pepper supervised a department of about 65 people who handle $865 million in purchases and contracts for the city . Last summer, Mayor Jerry Sanders shifted contracting authority and more than a dozen positions from Pepper ’s department to the Public Works Department to streamline the approval process for capital projects, a move made because purchasing and contracting was moving too slow for the mayor ’s liking. Scott Reese, the city’s assistant director of parks and recreation, will replace Pepper on an interim basis.

Support Dr. Shirley Weber For the 79th Assembly Who Is Dr. Shirley N. Weber? Born in Hope Arkansas to sharecroppers, the late David and Mildred Nash, Shirley Ann Nash is the sixth of eight children. The family moved to Los Angeles when Shirley was only three years old. She was educated in the public schools of Los Angeles and attended UCLA where she received her BA, MA and PhD by the age of 26. When she graduated from UCLA as an undergraduate she was one of 12 Woodrow Wilson Fellows in a class of over 6,000. At the age of 23 she became a professor at San Diego State University where she helped develop the department ofAfricana Studies. In 1988, she was elected to the Board of Education of San Diego City Schools. While a member of the Board, unprecedented progress was made in student achievement level in poor communities. Additionally, a bond initiative was passed that built new schools in older communities: Rosa Parks, Monroe Clark, Kimbrough, Nye, SCPA, and Chavez. Dr. Weber is recognized nationally and internationally for her ground breaking work to establish the discipline of Africana Studies. She has authored numerous articles and chapters in books on Marcus Garvey, Black Nationalism and Black Studies. Dr . Weber has served on the editorial boards of the Western Journal of Black Studies and the International Journal of Africana Studies. She has been selected Outstanding Faculty over ten times, and was selected Outstanding Young Woman in America twice. Since 2003, Dr. Weber annually takes a group of students to South Africa to volunteer with AIDS projects and at various youth centers and schools. In 2006, forty-four students and com munity leaders travel to South Africa with Dr . Weber to assist students at youth centers and schools in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Pretoria. That year, 2006, her work in South Africa was featured on MTV’s “Amazing Break” program that was aired around the globe. For her humanitarian work, Dr. Weber has received hundreds of awards from a wide range of or ganizations too numerous to name. 2006, Dr . Weber was appointed to the Board of Directors of Southwestern Christian College, an HBCU in Terrell, Texas. In 2009, she was selected as the SDSU’s Top 25 honored by SDSU President Stephen Weber. 2005-2006, Dr. Weber hosted a popular radio program weekly entitled, “It’ s a New Day with Dr. Shirley Weber,” on KURS AM 1040. Dr. Weber’s membership and involvement in the San Diego local community are too numerous to mention. She has helped and supported almost every major organization in the 79th District. Her work has touched the lives of thousands of young people throughout the county and the world. Dr. Weber is the mother of two children: Akilah, a medical doctor in Dallas, TX, and Akil, a college student in San Diego. Elections are coming back around again… By Brian Pollard Elections are coming up again so I thought I would share some ideas that may help us in thinking about the importance of our involve ment. There are going to be issues involving city employee pensions, a Mayor ’s elec tion, School Board elections, new State Assembly persons and numerous other issues that we will be asked to vote our choice. In earlier articles I have suggested we first and foremost consider what is in the best interest of our community. We will be exposed to numerous confusing explanations of issues that are supported by special interests. Candidates will tell us what we want to hear , and there will be a mine field of opportunities to bam boozle us. Don’t be fooled! Again…… How many times have we voted for some one w e “ liked” a nd t hen later been betrayed regarding issues that directly af fect us, or propositions that read one way but have a hidden meaning that is confusing at best. Some folks make their decision on” per sonality” or they “look the part”, or “… l know their family…”, or some instance in which somewhere in the past, “… they rubbed me the wrong way…”, Remember folks this is not a popularity contest…entire ly. I can only share with you methods that may increase our chances to make sound decisions. I sometimes look at or ganizations that have endorsed either a candidate or a proposition, if I believe in the or ganization I usually vote that way . I certainly look at the candidate’s past voting record if appropriate,

and as importantly I listen read and try and get some idea of the candidate’ s values and integrity. I can tell you what I will be looking for. I will be looking for candidates that are new to the scene, or at least candidates that have new ideas. A definition of insanity is ‘…doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results…” I will probably get some “raised eyebrows” but I look at our City and Community and it is time for the “old guard” to turn over the reigns to some new folks or at least to candidates with some new ideas. What progress have we really made in the last 10 years or so? Somebody help me here. Can you think of any major policy change or some candidate that had/or has the courage to champion new ideas to help all of the moderate to low income residents? It is time for a change. When was the last time we had a Democratic Mayor? Not since the 80’ s when a good friend of mine Maureen O’Connor was our Mayor . When was the last time we had a proposition that positively af fected the moderate and low income residents of our city. When was the community “supported” by redevelopment for our neighborhoods? Let’s face it folks regardless of what we are told, our circumstances cannot get much worse, can it? Perhaps it is time to take a risk and vote for new ideas! They only way our voices can be most effective is for us to learn about the candi dates and the propositions and to vote in high numbers. Perhaps learning about issues and

voting in “clusters”, which means getting groups together to learn about the candidates and issues and then going to the polls togeth er, riding with each other, and voting together if you mail your ballots in, making a pact to call a buddy and remind them to vote, if you vote at the same polling location, carpool!.

Small groups folks 3-5 people at a time. Attend forums and debates. You don’t have to agree with everything or everyone, except the importance of voting. Come on, we get together to watch football games why can’ t we get together to discuss issues and vote? “I’m just sayin.”

$11 Million Spent on Small Business in 2011 The San Diego Unified School District’ s construction program is primarily funded by Proposition S, the $2.1 billion general obligation bond measure intended to repair, renovate and revitalize neighborhood schools. SDUSD’ s business outreach department is engaging with local contractors, suppliers and equipment rental companies in an effort to make sure local projects benefit local communities. As a result of ongoing outreach ef forts, Emer ging Business Enterprise—or “EBE,” an umbrella term that includes woman-, minority-, disabled veteran-owned and small business enterprises—participation has reached an all-time high. At 51.2 percent of total construction dollars, more than $11 million worth of project work has been awarded to EBEs in 201 1. Small, local and/or emerging construction companies that want to be informed of SDUSD construction bids need to get on the business outreach database. An important resource, the database is used to notify contractors and suppliers directly when new bids are released. It is also used at bid time to run queries for prime contractors looking for subs and suppliers. “Contractors can contact me directly to get an application,” said Alma Bañuelos, SDUSD’s Business Outreach Coordinator. “EBE contractors are encouraged to send copies of any of ficial certification from other agencies with their application to make sure they are recognized for their EBE status.” Certifications accepted by SDUSD include California Department of General Services’ Small Business Enterprise (SBE) and Disabled-Veteran Business Enterprise (DVBE) certifications, California Unified Certification Program’ s Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) Certification and all state, city , county or local agencies’ Women-Owned Business Enterprise (WBE) Certification programs. “SDUSD has a special program that is very inclusive,” explained Alma. “Contractors without official certifications may self-certify for MBE, WBE and SBE status. This allows emerging businesses to bid while they continue to work on their certification paperwork,” she said. To get on SDUSD’ s business outreach database, contact Alma for an application at 858.573.5852 or abanuelos@sandi.net. For real-time bid information, follow Alma on Twitter at @sdusd_bizoutrch. Be sure to visit the SDUSD Outreach webpage at http://www.sandi.net/page/934.

When We Have Our Token Black, We’ve Filled Our Quota, No Need to Apply When I was growing up in Alabama, it was always important to know the appropriate sea sons for hunting and farming. If you killed too many pheasants of a certain species too early or a female deer out of season you could disrupt the entire ecosystem. And the same can be said of planting and harvesting. I remember hearing a Black sharecropper tell the story about how he went to pay the plantation owner out of his crops. The sharecropper would give whatever crops were in season, and at the time he should have been able to pay with flour , cheese, and dried peas. Only the sharecropper hadn’t grown any dried peas that season, but the plantation owner didn’t care. He told the sharecropper that he still had to pay for the dried peas since he should have known what to plant during each season. This story is similar to the stories of how Blacks are dealt with in today’ s society. Both Blacks and Whites make a mockery of the fact that we are the last to be hired and first to be fired. When White America provides Black organizations in the hood with grants and other government funds, it is not fashionable to hire a non-Black person to oversee the program. It is customary to put a Black person in power to oversee the program. But what Black people seem to always forget is that this one Black person only gets one chance. A chance to succeed or to fail. If this person succeeds, it gives room for other Blacks to follow in their footsteps. But if they fail, that door is closed to them and all other Blacks in their generation, and perhaps even their unborn children. This presents a serious problem for the Black community . When you as a Black individual get the opportunity to perform on a particular job, you had better win and win big. Or no other Black person will get a chance at that job. You may be questioning my point, but I went to an individual in a very prestigious job as the CEO of a lar ge corpora tion. He even explained to me the pressure to do the job better than anyone else could even think of doing it. I was watching the news the other night to see the former leader of SEDC plead guilty to some fraud charges. The media was all over the event — you can imagine just how many city ,

EDITORIAL county, state, and privately funded corporations and organizations saw this shame. These entities give out grants and jobs – who’ s to say that Blacks will not be excluded from future incomes? And if Blacks would be given some sort of income, they would have to be subjected to a thorough investigation into their pedigree to determine if they can be trusted with money . So Black folks, when you get these jobs, don’t glorify the fact that you are the only Black person in your department. You may be the quota, held at such a high you would never ever believe. Yes, there are some bleeding heart White Americans. If there had not been a small percentage of Whites that were sympathetic with Dr. King and the injustices of America, we may have been met with less success and more violence. Some White Americans go out of their way to hire Black Americans. But ulti mately it doesn’ t matter; we are still the last to be hired and the first to be fired. We must remember that Black Americans are still per ceived as guests and visitors, not permanent residents. I close with this old cliché: When the day is done and all has been said and done, there will be more said than got done. Until Next Week, Willie Morrow

Rapes of women in military ‘a national disgrace’

By Jackie Speier Women in the U.S. military are more likely to be raped by fellow soldiers than killed by enemy fire. I know what you're thinking - it sounds too unbelievable to be true. But it's not. The Department of Defense estimates that more than 19,000 service members were raped or sexually assaulted in 2010. Due to a military culture heavy on retaliation and light on prose cution, only 13.5 percent of the victims report the rape. The system of justice designed to adjudicate cases of rape in the military is in complete shambles. Victims are blamed. Assailants are promoted. Unit commanders - whose promotions are dependent on the conduct and perfor mance of the soldiers they supervise - have an incentive to see that allegations are few and convictions are fewer . As a result, the overwhelming majority of cases get swept under the rug. This abomination is not new . The Pentagon has largely ignored the recommendations of 18 reports on sexual assault and rape in the mili tary over the past 16 years. As a result, the problem is now worse than ever . So I have pledged to speak about this issue every week on the floor of the House of Representatives until this Congress and this administration do some thing more than offer lip service. While the incidence of rapes and sexual assaults is shockingly high, the personal accounts of victims add even more horror to the picture of a military at war with itself. Technical Sgt. Mary Gallagher , an Air National Guardsman, was allegedly sexually assaulted by a fellow ser geant in 2009. He pushed her up against a wall, took his right hand and pulled her pants and underwear down, and then used his hand to rub her private parts. He simultaneously ground his genitals against her, and talked about how much he was enjoy ing the assault. Command's only response was to reassign the assailant and order him to refrain from any contact with her . She was then lec tured by the base chaplain, who claimed that 96 percent of sexual assaults on women occur when drinking is involved. Technical Sgt. Gallagher had not been drinking. Seaman Panayiota Bertzikis, a member of the Coast Guard, was allegedly raped by a shipmate in 2006. She reported her rape to Coast Guard Command, who told her to keep quiet or be charged with the military equivalent of slander. She obtained photographs and admissions made by her rapist through the Freedom of Information Act, but the Coast Guard Command failed to prosecute him. Coast Guard personnel called her a "liar" and a "whore" and said she would "pay for snitching." When she reported this harassment, the Coast Guard's "victim advocate" told her not to pursue disci plinary action because she would be seen as "difficult." Seaman Bertzikis later said: "If I told them that my house was broken into not one person would question me, blame me or say that I am lying, but when I say that my body was broken into people automatically feel that they have the right to judge me, doubt me, and

Congresswoman Jackie Speier blame me." Army Sgt. Rebekah Havrilla was allegedly raped by a fellow soldier in 2007. After seeking the assistance of the military chaplain, he told her "it must have been God's will for her to be raped" and recommended she attend church more frequently. These are just three of the tens of thousands of stories that must be told. Gallagher, Bertzikis and Havrilla are among the 17 victims who have joined a civil lawsuit against the Department of Defense. Imagine a military system so inept that justice can only be sought outside of it. That's what it has come to. It took four years and the resignation of Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld to finally establish a statutorily required commission to investigate reports of sexual misconduct in the military. His successor, Robert Gates, has yet to implement a statutorily required database that would centralize all reports of rapes and sexual assaults in the military. It is time for the Pentagon to stop treating legal directives as mere suggestions. And it is time for Congress to abandon its role as a bystander. Some say that we should focus on more important issues because America is at war. But it is precisely because we are fighting abroad that this problem must be tackled head on. Division and strife within the ranks hurts our ability to defeat the enemy. In addition, military service is one of our nation's highest callings. We cannot, as a country, allow violent criminals to besmirch the honor of the armed forces, and we certainly cannot condone a system that is designed to protect the perpetrators and punish the survivors. Lives are being ruined. Rape kits are being discarded after a year or less, often without the DNA testing necessary for conviction. This runs counter to standard practice in the civilian justice system. Victims can't access treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder because records of their assaults are destroyed. This is a national disgrace, and the longer it goes unad dressed, Congress becomes an accomplice in these crimes. For my part, I will continue to speak out. I will soon establish a Web portal for women and men - yes, men are victims as well - to share their suffering until our military brass realizes it can't hide these crimes anymore. Do you have a story? Rep. Jackie Speier invites survivors to share their stories. E-mail stopmilitaryrape@mail.house.gov.

Democratic Blackness vs.

Republican Blackness By EZRAH AHARONE 11/2011 Ever since Republican Herman Cain, a self-described “Black conservative,” remarked that two-thirds of Black Democrats are “brainwashed,” the question of his “Blackness” has been contrasted with that of President Obama. Beyond the resentment from brain washing claims, this issue should prompt discourse and partisan introspection to deter mine if Blackness “politically exists” in either party . First, what is Blackness and how is it measured? Originally, before its 1960s incarnation, Black was derogatory . But during the Civil Rights/Black Power Movements we embraced Black. Understanding that White establishmentarian practices were self-serv ing and antithetical, Blackness not only signified color, but moreover consciousness. Among others, a consciousness that our common and collective self-interests should not be compromised to accommodate White interests . . . A consciousness that we are the first and last lines of defense against manmade inequalities . . . A self-determinative con sciousness of “Black Nationalism” to rightly restore and advance what little remained of our tattered personhood and African-ness. However, the admirable ideals of nation alism as espoused worldwide by others, were co-opted and unfairly stigmatized as something impermissible and unintelligently odd for us . . . As if “being Black” and “being Nationalistic” are intrinsically racist . . . As if “all was well” and then the Black Power Movement just illegitimately popped-out of nowhere without explainable need or historical context. Conjunctly , Webster’s favorably defines “Nationalist” as “A member of a political party or group advocating national indepen dence or strong national government,” while “Black Nationalist” is debased as “A member of a group of militant blacks who advocate separatism from whites.” Coupled with this demonizing, Blackness never gained mainstream political traction, given that the brute force and psychological methods originally used to instill fear and obedience, also distorted our sense of self-identity and self-relevance, causing us to yearn and politically validate our self-worth according to how far and fast we assimilate and gain acceptance. But by no means did/does our assimilation constitute a mutual mer ger of two equally liberated people. Being a fragmented subculture, we integrated into their already-exist ing nation of fully-operational designs. We conformed, we did not construct the sovereign or nationalistic or ideological contours of the nation. Other than our labor and loyalty, we hobbled into the relationship without independently possessing anything that they didn’t already own or control. Hence, no “bilateral agreement” of any sort was ever jointly signed. While we are visible in both Parties today , our presence should not be mistaken as “equal receptivity” of Euro-Americans to infuse Black/African mores or ideals into gov ernance. Contrarily, our presence reflects our “full receptivity” to their practices of gov ernance, including ambiguous wars that mock governing principles of Dr . King who is enshrined on the National Mall for placation. That said, in effort to prove we are just as “American” as they are, we adopted their ethos, ethics, traditions, belief systems and sociopolitical traits as our own. Black ideals and agendas that do not supplement their norms are routinely proscribed as racist, inconsequential, and non-authoritative. This partly explains why Black Democrats accept Obama’ s “race-neutral” position to not openly support Black Agendas aimed at inequalities, even though we openly supported him as a bona-fide constituency with 96% of Black votes. Knowing that Black-relat ed agendas would rile both parties, we devised the face-saving retreat that: “Obama’s not the president of Black America; he’s the president of all Americans.” Nevertheless, our very need for such agendas, links to the very fact that all of the prior 43 White presidents were “the president of all Americans” too, yet that didn’ t preclude 35 of them (Washington to Kennedy) from upholding enslavement or segregation. In sum, there’s really no functional scale of Blackness by which Obama or Cain can be weighed since Black consciousness has been relegated as “politically impertinent” to the ideological and nationalistic makeup of both parties. More and more, Black con sciousness is becoming like a hobby that’ s only relevant in privacy or at barbeques and family reunions. So unless the political legitimacy and authentic collectivity of Black self-interests are evolutionized with 21st-century relevance and functionality , then by mass default, men like Obama and Cain will personify a Siamese standard of a new “ Say It Loud . . .” ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ezrah Aharone is the author of two acclaimed political books: Sovereign Evolution: Manifest Destiny from Civil Rights to Sovereign Rights (2009) and Pawned Sovereignty: Sharpened Black Perspectives on Americanization, Africa, War and Reparations (2003). Greg “The Internet Guy” Wilson Over the last 2 months “Uncle Google” has been extremely busy changing the rules deciding who is going to earn first page placement every month. In the past 15+ years that the Internet has been in existence, there has been more websites started in the last 18 months which has caused an explosion in the amount of competition entering the market. This means that simply having an awesome website will no longer be a guar antee for online success. This brings me to the mystical term SEO…what is it? Ask 10 people, you get 10 different answers. Many people think they know what they are talking about, I laugh when I hear people tell me that they “have their key words” my experience has been that either they have used the free Google tool, or heard from some marketing person that these were their keywords. Most SEO marketing firms would not provide you with all the necessary info needed to make a difference to your website. I am going to give you some tips to dramatically set you apart from your online competition. The new catch phrase to familiarize yourself with is: Content Marketing. Research has shown that people don’t want to be sold to anymore. They would rather be educated; an exam ple would be creating white paper documents to pre-sell products and services through a drip email marketing campaign. Google wants you to play their game, this is how they think: their job is to be the best search engine, in order to do this, they must deliver the most relevant, popular sites on the Web that matches those keyword search terms, your job is to give Google what it wants: Content. It used to be that SEO guys would create this jibberish content that wasn’t meant to be read by humans, Google is very advanced and isn’ t being fooled anymore. Examples of some original content would be: blog posts, videos, photos, case studies and white pages all increase visibility , all these work in conjunction to build your brand. At Sitepropeller we have adjusted to the needs of our client base and developed a 360 degree attack plan that includes first creating a video and properly optimizing the video for tags, titles, content, etc. then syndicating the video across the many video distribution sites besides YouTube; which happens to be owned by Google, and has a huge influence on ranking, then create original articles that are rich in quality , to be syndicated to hundreds of high-ranking sites, month after month, building your websites size organically causing an eruption of backlinks that are heavily regarded by search engines to determine who is the authority on that subject. Writing a blog regularly and engaging your customer base with meaningful information will cause your target demographic to look to you when they are ready to buy your product or ser vice. Like most things in life, there are no short-cuts, you either pay for your position with ef fort or with money, at SitePropeller we combine cutting edge technology to conduct extensive mar ket research, website analysis, and a full product line of content creation/syndication services, fully-researched and delivered custom SEO reports that will put you in the driver ’s seat to doit-yourself if you like or hire us to do it for you. For companies using PPC (Pay-Per -Click) we are able to heal their pain, with 6 month guarantees and a new program for select clients who prefer to transition their budgets to a progressive Pay-Per -Lead program. THE (FINAL) DEBT REDUCTION PLAN: THE LAST CHANCE OF DEMOCRACY

T

he clock is ticking. The supercommitee, a newly formed committee from our second attempt of a governmental shutdown (early August), is still working to find at least $1.2 trillion in savings. However it seems as though Congress will face another stalemate. We have now added $1trillion to our national deficit—an estimated $15,000,000,000,000— and the public, congress and the President are very concern if the committee will ever reach a deal by November 23 rd. Will they postpone it

mally as a “trigger ,” the automatic cuts would be imposed by whoever wins the 2012 presidential election. Half the cuts would come from defense spending, the other half from domestic programs (benefits for Social Security and Medicare are exempt from the trigger). This does sounds reasonable but remember jobs will be at stake. It will be estimated that estimated that 3,700 agents from the Justice Department would lose their jobs, border patrols would be cut by 25 percent, and more than 2,300 IRS agents would lose their jobs. The entire year leading up to the 2012 elec tion would be consumed by more talk of debts, deficits and the pending sequestration. In addi tion, any move to turn of f the trigger requires bipartisan cooperation and consultation — two things that have been in short supply this year . And whoever wins as president and whoever controls Congress would have to continue grap pling with the issue, starting in 2013, as the fed eral government would run up against its bor rowing limit early that year. What you should be relieved of, from this action, is that federal gov ernment will not cut: Chidren’s Health Insurance Plan, Food stamp program (SNAP), Child nutrition, Supplemental Security Income, Refundable tax credits, Veterans benefits, Pell Grants, and Federal employee’s retirement (politicians need to be taken care of as well). Postponement is not option, nor is failure. An agreement must be reached or democracy will fail. Our country is our last beacon of hope, and if that crumbles so will our politics and interna tional relations. Our nation will not only be remembered as the country who cannot pay their bills, but a country who cannot exercise its own principles of democracy . Countries around the world look to us for a reason—let us not fail.

again? What will take to reduce our deficit and what will they cut to do so? And more importantly will democracy prevail? The Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction has been hung up almost from the start on the key stumbling block of the 1 12th Congress: taxes. The six Republicans on the socalled “super committee” have been reluctant to give in to tax increases, while the six Democrats have only been willing to agree to cuts to popular entitlement programs if there are accompanying increases in taxes on the wealthy . Republicans has offered more than $250 billion in what they consider increased tax revenue, but Democrats have dismissed the proposal because it would permanently extend the Bush era tax cuts that would lock in lower tax rates for high-income earners. Reluctantly we are seeing change here: Republicans, from before, would not settle on tax increases, and now Democrats may have the upper hand but the cuts to what entitlement pro grams is still a mystery . Furthermore, the President himself has not been involved with the negotiations. However , whatever happens, the supercommittee must have a plan that will help reduce the deficit by $1.2 trillion over the next 10 years—that will positively reflect the needs of America—or the Budget Committee will do it for them. So what would happen if we were to not reach a deal?—a complicated set of automatic spending cuts would happen. Formally known as a sequestration and inforTo contact me via email: princesefab@gmail.com and follow me on Facebook.

OMNILOGUEŠ - “All of us communicating with each other , so that we all come to a collective understanding, so that we all work toward the same goal.â€? Š

The Power of Sex Sex is the power of Life itself. In case you weren’ t aware (and many of us behave like we aren’t aware) new human life – the most powerful and pr ecious thing in the universe , comes through sex. But we treat sex, which is the use of our own unspeakably precious bodies, like it is something useless – to be given away or, worse yet, thrown away like we are trash – or even worse, to be bought and sold like a commodity . The pornography industry has larger revenues than Microsoft, Google, Amazon, eBay, Yahoo, Apple and Netflix combined . 2006 Worldwide Pornography Revenues ballooned to $97.06 billion. (http://internet-filter-review .toptenreviews.com/internet-pornography-statistics.html) Western (colonial) civilization, especially American culture, sees sex as a marketing tool and a commodity. Sex sells everything in America. Everyone wants to be ‘sexy. The fastest growing commodity in “underserved neighborhoods is prostitution fueled by poverty , desperation and new cell phone and internet technology. The power of sex is also the power of death. Through a process we are all familiar with, we use sex for pleasure and fun (recreational sex) and then, as if it were unexpected, we “find ourselves pregnant, something we call an “unwanted pregnancy, as if we didn’t know that sex is how babies are “made. If you don’t want to get wet, don’t wade in the water. If you DON’T “want to get pregnant DON’T have sex. Simple. Since the Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court decision “legalizing abortion, more than 50,000,000 (fifty million) unborn human children have been “terminated in America. 13 million, almost 30 percent, were Black. Or, as if we didn’ t know how it happened, we “find ourselves with a sexually transmitted disease (STD) that, if left untreated, can be fatal. Or, as in the case of AIDS, in spite of remedial drugs, IS (still) fatal. Sex can be the power of death. Sex is a spiritual act. It is an invocation (a sacred request) of the power of Life to set in motion the forces of creation to generate again the most powerful material force on the planet – a human being. The thought or action of a single human being can direct the course of history – whether it be the creation of a Mahatma Ghandi, or an Adolf Hitler. The power of life and death is in the CHOICE you make to have sex or not to have sex. Sex is a choice. The power of life and death is in your hands. The choice is yours. Choose wisely . Just Keeping It Real

Relationship Coversations

When the holiday’s hurt Life changes forever when a loved one dies. But holidays con tinue to come. While it is supposed to be a time of giving thanks there are many people who are in a place where they may find it difficult to find a reason to give thanks. If you’re asking, “How can we celebrate in the midst of this pain?” know that it’s not only possible, it’s necessary. Learn from a woman who shared this story with me: My teenage daughter died in 1993, and my husband lost his battle with cancer in November 2000. But I have four sons who still need to experience the joy celebration brings. Together we have learned to grieve, while at the same time grasping onto the hope God gives. The following can help if you’re experiencing hurt during the holidays: 1. Give yourself permission to grieve. The holiday season, Thanksgiving until the New Year, with its emphasis on celebration If you have questions you would and family, intensifies emotions of every kind. A significant factor like answered or topics discussed, please send all questions to face in moving on is allowing yourself freedom to express emotions. book.com/connectwithangelaharChildren especially should be encouraged to acknowledge hurt. ris or email: Examples: A woman named Tammy Pitre’ s lost both her theharrisgroup@cox.net or preschool son and husband within the past five years. She found twitter@KeepingitealAH. strength in giving herself permission to grieve [and] not trying to For more articles do what everyone expected her to do. She did only what she felt www.keepingitrealwithangela she was capable of doing.” Meg Woodson understood. She lost two children to cystic fibro- harris.blogspot.com sis. In her book, Making It Through the Toughest Days of Grief (Zondervan), she writes, “You’ll begin to reconcile yourself to your loss … when you begin to feel your sadness.” 2. Embrace your memories. You can give voice to loss and pain in many ways.A woman named Stephanie Harris lost her sister , Amber, who was in her early 20s. Stephanie expressed her grief by journaling. “I have written in my journal a lot, not just general journaling, but letters to Amber.” On her birthday and Christmas especially, she has written her letters telling her what everyone is doing.” A man named Chip Bryant remembers his father by going to the grave site, looking at old pho tos, and speaking of him during holidays. “I don’ t exclude his memory; I embrace it,” he explains. 3. Reach out. Grieving alone is not God’s plan for the body of Christ. We are to “weep with those who weep” and allow others to extend support to us (Romans 12:15). We should be sensitive to the fact that holidays are hard for those who have lost someone dear to them, especially to those spend ing their first Thanksgiving [or] Christmas … without their loved one. 4. Continue established traditions. One of the greatest struggles of celebrating in the midst of grief is facing change. The empty chair and Christmas stocking or attending a party alone may bring reminders of loss. You can often find comfort in continuing family traditions. 5. Create new traditions. Many families find comfort and purpose in establishing new traditions in honor of their loved one. One woman found this option very valuable after the loss of her husband her and her sons began asking God to show us opportunities to extend secret kindnesses in memory of their loved one. They share these at Christmas as their gift to him. Another family has found it comforting to contribute to international mission trips as a way to make new memories. Serving can also be a way to move forward and find new joy . Reaching out to others who are in pain can help give worth to your pain. 6. Pray for yourself and others. Cry to God for strength, comfort, and direction during the holidays. And take time to worship and thank Him that His Son “became flesh and took up residence among us” (John 1:14). Then pray for others. From the perspective of our pain, we can identify with the pain of others. Intercessory prayer can be the catalyst for our own healing. 7. Hold onto God’s promises. Our Heavenly Father is the God of all comfort. His Word is our anchor in the darkness of loss, loneliness, and pain. As believers, we can model our hope even while acknowledging our grief (1 Thessalonians 4:13). Read Scripture and hold fast to God’ s promises. The God who gave The Gift on that first Christmas promises “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain” (Revelation 21:4, NIV) and the celebration will never stop (my paraphrase). That’s the promise to cling to when the holidays hurt. This dish fr om the hot internet talk show Keeping it r eal with Angela Harris: Topic discussed this week: Prenup’ s your thoughts. Divided by both men and women. Some felt protecting your stuff was a business consideration that should be made just in case the marriage doesn’ t work. Others felt the prenup meant you didn’t trust the person you were marrying so why marry? A further conversation pushed for why go into a marriage positioning yourself for the possibility of the mar riage not working when the focus should be on being committed to doing whatever it takes to ensure that it works. Moral of the conversation: Marriage should not be entered into lightly as it is intended to be a lifelong commitment so do your homework, ensure your decision is final, and most importantly ensure that God has blessed this union – what God has brought together is not supposed to end. Stay tuned for the dish from the internet next week when we’ll tell you how the men and women felt about interracial dating. SAN DIEGO MONITOR TEN MAIN CAUSES OF DISEASE & DYSFUNCTION The San Diego Monitor

By Lady Topaz With few exceptions, disease and dysfunction do not develop quickly . Disease and dysfunction tend to develop slowly , usually over many years, as subtle and overt, signs that mark loss of health are ignored. I have found that many people feel that they are fine until they get diagnosed with a named condition like diabetes or hypertension. The reality is that degeneration is a fact of life - with each passing day, we lose some of our health potential. The pace at which our bodies degenerate is directly influenced through our daily choices. By understanding the main causes of disease and dysfunction, we can make dietary and lifestyle choices that promote longevity. Obviously , I cannot stress this enough which is why I continue to express my findings through research and experience. The main causes of acceleration of disease and dysfunction can be categorized into three groups: INJURY TOXICITY DEFICIENCY Here we will take a closer look at each of these categories of causes of disease and dysfunction: INJURY There are four main types of injury that con tribute to disease and dysfunction: Cellular Damage by Unhealthy Foods Gross or Repetitive Stress Injury Emotional Injury Electromagnetic Injury CELLULAR DAMAGE BY UNHEALTHY FOODS Some foods - or more accurately , some heavily adulterated foods and food-like chemicals - are capable of causing direct injury to our cells. Other highly processed foods cause indirect injury to our cells by deteriorating the health of our major or gans and blood vessels. SOME OF THE WORST OFFENDERS INCLUDE: Deep-fried foods like donuts, French fries, and most varieties of potato chips Margarine and shortening Artificial additives like MSG and aspartame Sugar-laden snacks and beverages Hot dogs, most varieties of sausage, bacon, and highly processed luncheon meats that contain nitrites

GROSS OR REPETITIVE STRESS INJURY A gross physical injury like a strained back or sprained ankle is an obvious cause of dysfunction. What is not so obvious in such cases is that if injured joints and muscles are not properly stretched and conditioned post-injury, the result may be scar tissue formation and joint dysfunction that may cause problems with mobility and flexibility over the long term. Whenever we experience a gross injury to mus cles or joints, it is best to stretch and exercise the injured area as soon as we are able to without creat ing intolerable pain. Examples of repetitive stress injury include back and shoulder pain from wearing a backpack over only one shoulder, a strained neck from talking too long on the phone while leaning to one side, and carpal tunnel syndrome from typing too long with our wrists over-extended. The best way to avoid repetitive stress injury is to stay physically comfortable while doing activities that require the same position or motions for long stretches of time. Designing an optimal work envi ronment, taking regular breaks to stretch and rest, and making sure that we do not maintain an asym metrical position while doing repetitive work are all effective means to avoiding repetitive stress injury. EMOTIONAL INJURY Emotional injury r efers to cellular damage that is caused by chr onic emotional str ess. As a direct cause of disease and dysfunction, this category is not given the attention that it deserves because it is difficult to come up with standardized treatments that can address every person’ s personal sources of anxiety and fear. My view is that our emotional health status is the single most important determinant of our overall health, since it is the foundation from which all of our daily choices are made . Plus, our emotional health status affects the tone at which our autonomic nervous system hums day and night. And, over many years, the tone of our autonomic nervous system is a huge determinant of our overall health status. ELECTROMAGNETIC INJURY In an early draft of a report issued in the spring of 1990, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the United States recommended that electromag netic fields (EMF’ s) be classified as a class B car cinogen - a probable human carcinogen. Unfortunately, by the time that the EPA released the Continued on page 20

The Theatre San Diego has a lot of theatres for such a small city suprisingly . My mother and I had the opportunity to watch “Come Fly Away” which debut at the Civic Center last week. It was a dance musical to the late great music of Frank Sinatra that was conceived, choreographed and directed by Twyla Tharp. It was riveting and kept us bopping to the beat. The dancers were phenomenal and made us feel the music through our bodies as they swayed, galloped and escapades across the stage. The theater was celebrating its 35 years of being in business so they gracious ly served us cake and drinks to all the patrons “Free” of char ge. That was a real treat we didn’ t even expect. There is a group of us that are going to see Mr. Morris Chestnut in David Talbert’s new play “What Your Husband Doesn’ t Know”. This play has several known artist such as Michelle Williams from Destiny’s Child and Clifton Davis to name a few . The play is only in town for 2 days at the Speckles Theater on Sunday, November 20, 2011 for a 3 pm and 7:30 pm showing. If you want to ride in style you can join us on the Party Bus for $55 per person which includes the ticket and drinks.

Right around the Corner at the Civic Center the one and only Chris Tucker will be in town Friday, November 25, 2011 at 7:30 pm. Tickets are only $45-$65 for advance purchase. Jonathan Harris – Columnist November 19, 2011 – Study: Despite Social Networking Boom, We Have Less Close Friends Don’t trust that friend count on your favorite social net working site, according to a new University of Cornwell survey , despite the explosion of sites like Myspace, Facebook and Twitter, that has emphasize “following” and

“friending” people, we actually have less friends than we did in the mid 1980s. According to the study , 25 years ago people had roughly three people they considered to be close friends. Meaning someone with whom they shared normally guarded personal information. In 201 1, the study , which surveyed 2,000 US citizens, has that number down to just two. Researchers say this in not cause for alarm however, instead they suggest this is actually the result of people becoming more discrimi nating in the company they keep. Matthew Brasher , who conducted the study, said of the results, “Rather than our networks getting smaller overall, what I think may be happening is we’re simply classifying

a smaller proportion of our networks as suitable for important discussions.” Unemployment Numbers Hit Record Low Applications for unemployment benefits have dipped to a 7-month low according to the Labor Department. The department puts the number of new applications at 388,000, a decrease of 5,000. This marks fourth decline in 5 weeks. The number of those receiving unemploy ment benefits also fell to a record low . The Labor Department puts those receiving bene fits at 3.8 million, a decrease of 57,000. That is the lowest since September 2008. Despite these positive numbers, the econo my added only 80,000 jobs in the final week of October, the lowest addition in four months. The unemployment rate currently stands at 9 percent. Report: 1 in 12 Teens Engages In SelfHarm According to a new report 1 in 12 teens engages in the act of intentionally causing themselves harm. The report classifies selfharm as things like burning and cutting. The report says these acts are the biggest predica tors of suicide, particularly in young women. The study followed a 1,802 while they were teens and 1,652 all the way into young adulthood. 149 teens admitted to self-harm (10 percent of girls, 6 percent of boys). The study was conducted between 1992 and 2008 (by the end of 2008 the participants’ average age was 29). The report goes on to show that an overwhelming majority of these teens, 90 percent, no longer exhibited the behavior by the time they reached young adulthood. The research team concluded, “Our find ings suggest that most adolescent self-harming behavior resolves spontaneously . However, young people who self-harm often have men tal health problems that might not resolve without treatment, as evident in the strong relation detected between adolescent anxiety and depression and an increased risk of selfharm in young adulthood.”

Continued from page 17 final draft of this report, the words “class B carcinogen” was deleted. Despite their change of opinion on electromagnetic fields, the EP A included the following thoughts on EMF’s in their report: “In conclusion, several studies showing leukemia, lymphoma and cancer of the nervous system in childr en exposed to EMF’s, supported by similar findings in adults in several occupational studies also involving electri cal power frequency exposures, show a consistent pattern of r esponse that suggest [sic] a causal link.” There is plenty of evidence in the scientific literature that has me con vinced that electromagnetic fields can be a significant cause of disease and dysfunction. My first thoughts ran to the problems that were documented in the movie, Erin Brockovich, X-rays, mammograms, and other forms of ionizing radiation are also capable of accelerating disease and dysfunction. Clearly, it is not practical–or possible–for a lot of us to live of f the grid to dramatically lower exposure to EMF’ s. But, we can take steps to mini mize our exposure to some of the following, most common threats: Talking for long stretches of time with a cell phone pressed against our

heads. Living close to cell phone towers and broadcasting antennas. Working for many years in a profession that involves being in close proximity to devices that emit ionizing radiation. Regularly lying in tanning beds. With each passing year, electronic devices like flat screen TVs and computer monitors are becoming bigger and more pleasing to the eyes. While all of these devices are not guaranteed to emit significant amounts of electro magnetic radiation, common sense dictates that it is wise to be modest in our choice and use of all devices that require electricity to run. TOXICITY There are two main types of toxicity that contribute to disease and dys function: Exogenous Toxicity Endogenous Toxicity Exogenous Toxicity Exogenous toxins are chemicals that are made outside of our bodies that can harm our cells if they are ingested, inhaled, or absorbed into your bloodstream. While it is unrealistic to live and work in an environment that is com pletely free of exogenous toxins, we can minimize our exposure to exoge nous toxins by being aware of the most common household toxins. Over-the-counter, prescription, and recreational drugs are all exoge -

While some endogenous toxins are eliminated as gas, some make their way into our bloodstream by traveling through our intestinal walls, and once they make it into our bloodstream, they can access our cells and contribute to toxic burden. The best ways to minimize the amount of endogenous toxins that are produced in our digestive tracts are to chew our foods well, eat mainly fresh, minimally processed foods, and ensure exposure to friendly bacteria. DEFICIENCY Disease and dysfunction are accelerated when we are deficient in any of the following: Nutrients Physical and Emotional Rest Sunlight and Fresh Air Love and Life Purpose NUTRIENTS To be optimally healthy, our cells need enough energy (calories) to carry out everyday metabolic activities - these calories are obtained by burning one or more of the followingmacronutrients: protein, fat, and carbohydrates. Our cells also require a steady supply of the followingmicronutrients: Continued on page 23

vitamins, minerals, and enzymes. And to be optimally healthy, we require adequate intake of water , fiber , and phytonutrients. Phytonutrients are or ganic components of plants that are not essential to health , but are needed to experience optimal health ; examples of phytonutrients include flavonoids (found in citrus and raw, organic cocoa), carotenoids (found in carrots and spinach), and indoles (found in Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cab bage, and cauliflower). The best way to ensure optimal nourishment of our cells is to eat nutrient-dense foods - these are foods that are highly concen trated in vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and phytochemicals. Nutrient-rich foods include fresh vegetables, legumes, fruits, whole grains, nuts, and seeds. Organic eggs and wild fish are also healthy, micronutrient-rich foods that are well tolerated by many people. Agood way to become deficient in the micronutrients that we need to prevent disease and premature aging is to eat highly pro cessed foods that fill us up but do not provide us with substantial amounts of natural micronutrients - soda and foods that are made with white flour belong in this category. If we regularly eat micronutrient-rich foods but want extra insurance against developing nutritional deficiencies, we can include nutritional supplements made with whole foods in our diets. PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL REST Adequate physical rest is critical to preventing premature dis ease and dysfunction, as the endocrine system relies heavily on restful sleep to function properly. Adequate emotional rest goes hand in hand with the section above on emotional trauma. Taking time to rest the mind and nervous system via meditation, prayer, journaling, or any other activities that help us feel calm can promote optimal autonomic ner vous system tone, which is an essential requirement for getting and staying well. SUNLIGHT AND FRESH AIR Promoting optimal vitamin D status by exposing skin to sun-

light without getting burned has been receiving tremendous sup port from the research community over the past several years. Vitamin D supports several major or gan systems, including our nervous, immune, and skeletal, and cardiovascular systems. Optimal health also requires optimally oxygenated blood, which is only possible when we have regular access to fresh air . We must not overlook the importance of sleeping in the presence of fresh air. LOVE AND LIFE PURPOSE Consistently feeling loved and cared about is essential to preventing disease and dysfunction as we age. If you cannot accept this without a long list of footnotes of studies that support this notion, have a look at Dean Ornish’s book, Love and Survival. As discussed in the section on emotional trauma, making healthy choices is easiest when we have a foundation of good emotional health, which includes a sense of purpose for our lives. Our unique life purposes do not have to involve anything on a global level, or even a small rural town level;the idea is to feel content with our daily efforts to be kind and helpful people . Lastly, I would like you to consider where do our genes fit into our risk of developing disease and dysfunctional cells? Well, like our emotional health status, our genetics serve as a type of foun dation that all of our daily choices build upon or tear down. In the vast majority of cases, genetic predispositions for specific health challenges like breast cancer, endometriosis, prostate cancer, colorectal cancer, and other conditions that are often described as having strong genetic components can stay dormant if we minimize our exposure to the major causes of disease discussed in this arti cle, and if we consistently make health-promoting choices. Now that we have reviewed the 10 major causes of disease and dysfunction, how about some guidelines for making positive choices? This part is simple. You may refer back to previous arti cles which I have written for the Monitor on healthy lifestyle choices. And, regularly include the foods mentioned above in your daily regimen. Not all of us may make it to 120 years of age, but by under standing the main causes of disease and dysfunction, working on staying emotionally balanced, and making sensible choices each day, we can have peace of mind in knowing that we are maxi mizing our health potential. Here is to your EXCELLENT health!
