Veteran Unemployment: Obama Signs Bill Into Law To Spur Vet Hiring By Julie Pace, AP Heralding a rare moment of bipartisan agree ment, President Barack Obama signed into law Monday legislation aimed at helping unemployed veterans find work while putting more cash in the hands of companies with government contracts. The legislation, which creates tax breaks for companies that hire jobless veterans, marks the first proposal from Obama's $447 billion jobs bill to be signed into law. The rest of the package of new taxes and spending has lar gely failed to garner support from Republican lawmakers. barack-obama-jobless-veterans.jpgPablo Martinez Monsivais, The Associated PressPresident Barack Obama gives a 'thumbs-up' after signing legislation that will provide tax credits to help put vet erans back to work Monday during a ceremony at the Eisenhower Executive Of fice Building on the White House complex in Washington. The president is joined by first lady Michelle Obama, and Dr . Jill Biden. "Because Democrats and Republicans came together, I'm proud to sign those proposals into law," Obama said during a signing ceremony Monday. Looming over the brief moment of unity , however, was the apparent failure of lawmakers from both parties to agree on $1.2 trillion in spending cuts ahead of a Wednesday deadline by a special com mittee. While Obama didn't directly address the looming deadline, he said the American people deserve bold, bipartisan action. "My message to every member of Congress is keep going. Keep working. Keep finding more ways to put bipartisanship aside and put more Americans back to work," he said. The veterans' legislation had overwhelming support from both parties, with the House passing the measure 422-0 and the Senate approving it 95-0. In addition to the tax breaks for businesses, it also beefs up job-training and counseling programs for unemployed veterans. The legislation also repeals a 2006 law that would have required the federal, state and local governments to withhold 3 percent of their payments to contractors. That statute, which doesn't take ef fect until 2013, was supposed to pressure contractors to pay their taxes in full, but lawmakers now say the

law would deny cash to companies that need it to hire more workers. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, RKy., said passage of the bill showed that it is possi ble for both parties to reach a consensus. "By focusing on areas of agreement -- rather than partisan stimulus bills -- we can pass legislation to help foster job growth. Neither of these measures alone is going to solve the jobs crisis, but they'll provide relief to job creators and help American veterans," McConnell said. McConnell praised Obama for inviting Republican Sen. Scott Brown of Massachusetts to attend the ceremony. It was Brown who had introduced the 3 percent withholding bill. The tax credits for hiring veterans will cost the government an estimated $95 million -- a tiny frac tion of Obama's overall jobs plan. The credits would be as much as $9,600 for companies hiring disabled vets who have looked for work for more than half a year. The size of the credit would be based on the worker's salary and how long the worker was unemployed. The programs would be financed mostly by extending a fee the Veterans A ffairs Department charges to back mortgages. Erasing the withholding requirement for con tractors would reduce federal revenues by an esti mated $1 1.2 billion over the coming decade. It would be paid for by making it harder for some elderly people to qualify for Medicaid by changing the formula used to determine their eligibility. Many economists have said annulling the with holding law would have a minimal impact on hiring.

The History of Thanksgiving

T

hanksgiving may be a national holiday today , but originally it was a “Yankee” holiday. As New Englanders migrated to other areas of the country, they took the holiday with them, spreading it south and west. President Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1863 during the Civil War to promote national unity. Thanksgiving had already spread, but white Southerners still tended to see it as a Yankee holiday, especially after Lincoln’s proclamation. So, after the Civil War, many white Southerners celebrated Thanksgiving on their own schedule or forwent the holiday altogether . Meanwhile, African Americans in the South embraced Thanksgiving, celebrating it along with the rest of the nation. African-American pastor , Alexander Crummell, used the occasion of Thanksgiving in 1875 to deliver a powerful sermon, “The Social Principle Among a People and Its Bearing on Their Progress and Development.” Crummell ar gued that it was the duty of himself and his congregation to reflect on racial progress on Thanksgiving Day, urging that “[i]t is peculiarly a duty at this time when there is evidently an ebb-tide of indif ference in the country , with regard to our race; and when the anxiety for union neutralizes the interest in the black man. . . .” It was not until the opening decade of the 20th century that white Southerners fully adopted the holiday as well. By the time President Franklin Roosevelt signed a bill permanently placing Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday of November, it had been incorporated as a holiday celebrating family into the lives of most Americans.

Announcement: Thanksgiving History and Facts

A

better title for this article may have been Thanksgiving History and Myths. It seems just about all of what we associate with modern day Thanksgiving celebrations has very little root in actual historical fact. As you prepare your Thanksgiving invitations, check this article out and impress your guests with a little Thanksgiving trivia Per James W. Baker, Senior Historian at Plimoth Plantation, “The reason that we have so many myths associated with Thanksgiving is that it is an invented tradition. It doesn’ t originate in any one event. It is based on the New England puritan Thanksgiving, which is a religious Thanksgiving, and the traditional harvest celebrations of England and New England and maybe other ideas like commemorating the pilgrims. All of these have been gathered together and transformed into some thing different from the original parts.” So what did the Pilgrims and Native Americans really eat and do for Thanksgiving? The truth may surprise you. Contrary to popular belief, they didn’ t sit down to a meal featuring turkey, corn, cranberries, and pumpkin pie (in fact, they didn’ t even have forks!). Let’ s travel back to Plymouth and discover some of the humble origins of Thanksgiving traditions we cel ebrate today and what the original celebration was actually like. In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast which is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. This harvest meal has become a symbol of cooperation and interac tion between English colonists and NativeAmericans. Although this feast is considered by many to the very first Thanksgiving celebration, it was actually in keeping with a long tradition of celebrating the harvest and giving thanks for a successful bounty of crops. Native American groups throughout the Americas, including the Pueblo, Cherokee, Creek and many others or ganized harvest festivals, ceremonial dances, and other celebra tions of thanks for centuries before the arrival of Europeans in

‘However, the only two items that historians know for sure were on the menu are venison and wild fowl, which are mentioned in primary sources. It is plausible that lobster, seal and swans were on the Pilgrims’ menu as well.’ North America. Food preparation Historians have also recorded other ceremonies of thanks among European settlers in North America, including British colonists in Berkeley Plantation, Virginia. At this site near the Charles River in December of 1619, a group of British settlers led by Captain John Woodlief knelt in prayer and pledged “Thanksgiving” to God for their healthy arrival after a long voyage across the Atlantic. This event has been acknowledged by some scholars and writers as the official first Thanksgiving among European settlers on record. Whether at Plymouth, Berkeley Plantation, or throughout the Americas, celebrations of thanks have held great meaning and importance over time. The legacy of thanks, and particularly of the feast, have survived the centuries as people throughout the United States gather family, friends, and enormous amounts of food for their yearly Thanksgiving meal. People tend to think of English food at bland, but, in fact, the pilgrims used many spices, including cinnamon, ginger , nutmeg, pepper, and dried fruit, in sauces for meats. In the seventeenth century, cooks did not use proportions or talk about teaspoons and tablespoons. Instead, they just impro -

vised. The best way to cook things in the seventeenth century was to roast them. Among the pilgrims, someone was assigned to sit for hours at a time and turn the spit to make sure the meat was evenly done. Since the pilgrims and Wampanoag Indians had no refrigeration in the seventeenth century, they tended to dry a lot of their foods to preserve them. They dried Indian corn, hams, fish, and herbs. On the Menu Historians aren’ t completely certain about the full bounty , but it’s safe to say the pilgrims weren’ t gobbling up pumpkin pie or playing with their mashed potatoes. Following is a list of the foods that were available to the colonists at the time of the 1621 feast. However , the only two Continued on page 22

Elections are coming back around again… Brian Pollard I am sitting here watch ing new footage about a group of demonstrators at UC Davis being sprayed with “pepper spray”, and it brings to mind the tumul tuous events of the 60’ s and early 70’s when our younger generation stood up against National, state and local injustices and made their voices heard. Where are the youth of today? Hiding behind their IPODS, IP ADS and smart phones,. and not getting actively involved in today’ s current events. There certainly are a few pockets of involved young people, so I am not speaking to them. I am trying to wake up the majority of younger folks (Generation X’ s and Y’s) that are watching their future evaporate right before their eyes. Many of them will not feel the ef fect of today’ s decisions but will in a few years. Look, I am not speaking of mass anarchy but some civil awareness may be in order . Locally in Education Title 1 is in danger ,

the scores for our students are as low as they have ever been, no youth jobs, and yet our younger generation has been silent. Young people are killing themselves through continued gang con flicts and more younger peo ple are in jails at record numbers. With these issues, what kind of future do our Latino, poor white kids and African American kids have to look forward to? Continued medi ocrity and minimum wage jobs? I have been in numerous local or ganizations including the NAACP , Coalition of Neighborhood Councils, BAP AC, Town Councils and I have yet to see any sizeable involvement of younger folks, (that is partially our generation’s fault). The closest exam ple we have of younger people involved is with “100 Strong”, and although they are getting some attention and are doing some good things, that is not enough. We need a broader range of organizations of younger people that focus on the specific issues that af fect them,

our younger residents. Their constant use of social networks and electronic communication devices provide a great vehicle, instead of texting unimportant data over bandwidth, it could be used as they have been in Muslim countries, to alarm their peers to meetings and information about decisions made by others that nega tively impact them. I am hopeful our gener ation will soon ‘wake up’. I have a Facebook page and as I jump from friend to friend I see very little conver sation about news that af fects them. Instead I see conversations about their socially focused life’s events. How about them tak ing it up a notch folks, how about an intelli gent stream of information about the crappy education they are getting, or about the lack of respect our President receives, what about the pregnancy rates among themselves?, or maybe about solutions on resolving our continued gang problems and the Prison statis tics. That would be a start. Don’ t they see their future being shaped without any posi tive involvement from themselves! Where is the interest and awareness of today’s events? Perhaps my generation is somewhat at fault. Do we ever talk about current events

with our kids? And how those events can affect them? Do we understand current events well enough to speak with them about these issues? Do we lead by example? Do we understand the importance of voting? Do we urge them to register to vote? Do we attend local civic engagement meetings or belong to local or ganizations that encourage civic engagement? Do we show them we care about them? Look, my family is not immune from this phenomena, my daughters have to listen to my raves and rants about their need to get more involved in their communities and issues, so don’ t get it twisted, I too am touched by this issue as well as most of you. Our only recourse perhaps is to amp it up and lead more by example. It is up to us to learn more about these issues and start a flame under their fannies to get them interested. Since we are partly at fault for getting them in this apathetic state, we owe it to them to try and pull them out of it. We have to break the chain of apathy we find ourselves in. Ok that’ s enough. Now that I am suf ficiently frustrated, I hope you had a Happy Thanksgiving! Much love.

Do Blacks Take a Silent Oath to Treat Other Blacks Unjustly? There is a Black Supreme Court that exists within our community . That court is held weekly in our barber and beauty shops. One of the most popular "cases" tried, is the reason why some Blacks tend to treat Whites better than their selves. Since barbering became a vocation, it has been discussed in barbershops and I'm sure the same topic was debated on the plantation, too. Black hatred is deeply embedded in the minds of today's Black American. Have you taken a silent oath to always treat your Black brothers and sisters unequally , dishonestly , and unjustly in the presence of White folks? Do you justify your actions by saying that you only behave this way because you don't want White people to think that you are partial to Blacks? An example would be if you heard a Black worker saying that their Black supervi sor seems to always be on his case. After approaching the supervisor to discuss the issue of being treated so badly , in contrast to his White co-workers, the supervisor replies, "1 don't want those White folks to think I treat you better than them just because we're both Black." Do Blacks in leadership and authority silently swear to hate their own? When did they take this oath to be mean and to discrim inate against their brothers and sisters? I know Black bankers in management and executive leaderships who have never given a Black person a substantial loan, besides those of cars and homes. I am sure that Black bankers have helped other Blacks with car loans, but let me tell you that the car better pay for itself or it will be repossessed! That house better appraise for its value, because they will foreclose and take it back to make sure they never lose any money! Can you image being in a leadership position like that of a banking executive and never giving an unsecured loan to a Black person, no matter - how good their credit score? On the out -

EDITORIAL side looking in, one can only wonder if there is such thing as a silent oath that Blacks take within themselves. They privately fixate in their minds that they will never be burned by a Black person by giving them an opportunity. In no way will they allow their positions to be put in jeopardy by giving others opportunities because they must answer to "Mr . Charlie." Look around the community and you will see the jobs that Blacks hold have a built-in excuse to discriminate against them. This is the reason why we have not been able to thrive economically: Blacks spend their time making sure that their brothers and sisters receive no preference of any kind, unlike other race of people. When l Worked in the barbershop, I lis tened to the Black executives that would come in for haircuts. They always seemed to proudly denounce other Black businesses. Ask yourself, have we really taken a silent, selfhatred oath? Are we sworn to treat Blacks unjustly? Until Next Week, Willie Morrow

Mental and Military Battlegrounds By Ezrah Aharone

Instead of saying something typical like, “testing 1-2-3,” to check his microphone for a radio broadcast, Ronald Reagan once jokingly said, he had “Signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever…W e begin bombing in five minutes.” Humor reveals elements of truth. But the historical connection between “bombing” and “signed legislation,” reveals a violent and dangerous trait of the U.S. government that has proven far more fatal than funny. Ever since 1776 when the 56 founders signed their declaration and bombed their way into independence, Euro-Americans have established a systematic pattern of violence where they spare no human, material, or military expense when it comes to controlling land, labor , and resources. Even their national anthem which was inspired by the War of 1812, sensationalizes violence and bombs “…The perilous fight…ramparts gallantly streaming…rockets red glare,” and “bombs bursting in air!” This is not intended to ridicule “rights” but rather to sound an alert to another kind of ongo ing war that is being fought without a military—a war where battlegrounds are located in the mind—a war where the battle-plan is to subtly capture and mold thoughts, standards, and actions to conform and align with “Institutionalized Ideals and Interests.” Euro-Americans have unilaterally exerted their ways over others for so long, that they believe they can sign and bomb people and systems in or out of existence. To exert over Black America, after centuries of violence and signing uncountable laws to sustain the System of Slavery , they bombed during the Civil War and then signed the Emancipation Proclamation. Segregation was sustained by further violence until they signed the Civil Rights System into existence. While the current signing and bombing attempts in Iraq have backfired, they did successfully re-sign the Voting Rights Act back into existence. Now, for the next 25 years, Black America is reassured the right to vote for the next crops of White multimillionaire and billionaire senators, governors, and presidents who will continue the signing and bombing process. This is not intended to ridicule “rights” but rather to sound an alert to another kind of ongo ing war that is being fought without a military—a war where battlegrounds are located in the mind—a war where the battle-plan is to subtly capture and mold thoughts, standards, and actions to conform and align with “Institutionalized Ideals and Interests.” When properly executed, the damages of psychological combat are equally lethal as any bomb. Incessant battles are waged to saturate Black thought with Americanization to the point where all other ideals, particularly Black sovereign ideals, are regarded as invalid, irrelevant, and non-authoritative. Because psychological combat is fought on mental battlegrounds, the enemy is not always physical or visible. The enemy incubates as a “Process of Thought” that can come in any color , religion, or political af filiation. The enemy is concealed within camouflaged fatigues of ideolo gies, philosophies, doctrines and traditions. You cannot see a racist thought, a flawed philosophy, a false doctrine or a distorted perception. But you do see the manifest social injustices, econom ic inequities, and political inadequacies. Psychological warfare is not however some kind of plot, where mad scientists in laboratories at the Pentagon are concocting mind serums or scheming to implant microchips in your head. The initial attacks were struck during slavery through fear tactics. Have you ever closely observed in photos the facial expressions of enslaved or some newly-freed Africans? The stunned constitution, the empty stare, the bewildered gaze of uncertainty—these are all telltale signs of a people

conquered by hostile psychological combat. In such pictures you’re not just looking at enslaved individuals, you’re looking at Psychological Prisoners of War. Due to indoctrination we no longer outwardly exhibit the spooked-out look of slaves, but the unjust grips of Americanization remain unquestionably fixed as ever before—as plainly demon strated in our abject incapacities during Katrina, compounded by our inability to hold the U.S. government accountable for its criminal negligence. A similar process is still at work. Differing only in that hostile combat is now substituted with techniques of habituation and indoctrination, as was humorously related in a political cartoon depicting a finger-pointing Uncle Sam caricature, saying: “Be A Loyal American! Stop Knowing Things We Don’t Want You To Know.” A recent segment on Dateline showed babies as young as 2-years-old who could identify various food logos like Starbucks, KFC, Dunkin Donuts, and McDonalds. This illustrates indoctrinated conditioning at the earliest s tages. “Indoctrination” is comprised of 3 words: In, Doctrine, and Nation—which simply means to be “In” the “Doctrine” (teachings) of a “Nation.” Due to indoctrination we no longer outwardly exhibit the spooked-out look of slaves, but the unjust grips of Americanization remain unquestionably fixed as ever before—as plainly demon strated in our abject incapacities during Katrina, compounded by our inability to hold the U.S. Continued on page 7

Tax Strategy Article 1: Control is the Goal Would you rather have a million dollars in hand or control of a million dollars? Would you rather be the president or control the nation? These are two very dif ferent modes of thought and modes of operation. The one who holds the title is the most obvious individual to attack if one is to sue, a mutiny is to erupt or blame is to be given. Whenever a title is given, a title can be taken away , nonetheless, the one in control profits from it all, if a profit is to be made. This may turn out to be more of a business article than a tax article, nonetheless, this point is brought up for the sole purpose and reason that “knowing the estate of your flock” allows you to control the direction your flock goes and their successful arrival to the chosen destina tion. In the historical trade of being a Sheppard if two of the sheep in your flock are lame, can s/he travel a long journey if the entire flock must go and s/he only has two shoulders to carry the burden of one lame sheep? If this is

the case, you will waste valuable time in start ing the journey and then having to stop after realizing this disadvantage after the fact. The purpose of this allegory was to bring out the point that the direction your business goes is totally dependent upon knowing how your cash flows. How does your cash flow? Do you accurately and without assumption know? If not, then you have lost control! Control is the goal! If you have lost control, you stand no chance of arriving at your destination, without an abrupt and costly corrective measure being put in place before you crash and burn. To know the account of your flock, you must keep account of your flock. This takes consistency in regards to recording every transactional change regarding your financial position. A change in your financial position could mean that you’ve earned income, performed a service for which you have not been paid and thus have an account receivable. A change in your financial position could be the depreciation of an asset, a

debt you have obtained, an increase in a utility expense due to the purchase of a new machine, etc. This may seem too complicated to report, too cumbersome to be consistent with, and/or too seemingly menial to meager around with, because quite actually you are spending increasing amounts of time, which you don’ t somehow have, actually bringing in the money to pay all of these bills in the first place. The question now would be, did you start, buy or take over this business to pay bills or to increase the growth and value of the company . In the case of the latter , your best bet would be to outsource your accounting needs or hire a part-time employee to handle this and possibly other time consuming functions, which require relentless consistency because of the unquan tifiable value ascertained. Notice that the word bookkeeping was intentionally not used, but accounting needs were. Many companies have leagues of bookkeepers, but does that company have an individual that can astutely decipher the picture that the financial statements have drawn and can thereby decide whether that picture is the proper land mark ensuring you are heading in the right direction of your compa ny’s vision and ultimate goal? Knowing your financial and cash position is what affords you the control of your company .

It is what af fords you the control of how much taxes you pay. It is what affords you the control of navigating to higher profits, because you know exactly where to increase ef forts to bring heightened revenue and to streamline or cut expenses to increase the ef ficiency of your operational systems. Systemize and create a consistent schedule of reporting each and every financial transaction and you will gain the very essence of control. You will mitigate risk, engender the trust of the public and capitalize on your growth in your market. Please take time to put this system in place. There are many free online accounting systems that would suit your company fine for start up businesses that need to bootstrap every process in their company . For the up and coming businesses, contracting this work out to a professional would probably be the decision of choice. Now for many busi nesses that are vying to lead the pack in your county or pocket industry , shifting expenses around to hire on a full-time financial director or accountant of some sorts would definitely strengthen your opportunity . Until next time, “Keep it Pushin’”! Cheers! Al Darnell Jr., MBA (BiG Al) Tax Advisor and Business Strategist, ADACI www.myadaci.com

THE FAILURE OF THE SUPER COMMITTEE: WHAT WILL BECOME OF OUR FUTURE POLITICS?

O

n November 21, 201 1, the so-called super committee have failed its promise to the people and have failed its promise to democracy. Failing to cut $1.2 trillion from federal spending—setting into motion of auto matic cuts in defense and domestic programs— America is still faced with a national deficit of $15 trillion. In a statement made by the panel’ s co-chairs, Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-T exas) and Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.): “After months of har d work and intense deliberations, we have come to the conclusion today that it will not be possible to make any bipartisan agr eement available to the public before the committee’ s deadline. Despite our inability to bridge the committee’s significant differences, we end this process united in our belief that the nation’s fiscal crisis must be addr essed and that we cannot leave it for the next genera tion to solve. W e remain hopeful that Congr ess can build on this committee’s work and can find a way to tackle this issue in a way that works for the American people and our economy” Well at least they showed bipartisanship, when they wrote this statement; however , what went wrong? And what will happen to future politics and Christmas shopping? To answer these questions let us take a look at the issue: Taxes. I can concur that no one likes taxes; but they are necessary if we want to improve our nation al security , infrastructure, and social security . What I do not concur is extending the Bush Tax Cuts which many Republicans are too blind to see. Both Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) House Minority Leader and Pat Murray , have said before that Republicans do not want to tax the rich and now they have refused to accept the jobs bill that will promote job growth. Republicans may ar gue that tax hikes (in terms of tax cuts to the rich) may increase our deficit but again I argue, “Who are these job creators?” Is Kim Kardashian a job creator? And then, there is the argument about how “imposing

regulations” on job creators would restrict innovation. Have businesses, in the past, found “innovative” ways to work around regulations such tax loopholes, or even better dumping sites? So how would imposing regulations inhibit busi nesses from doing what they did before when they were under the Bush Administration? At the White House, President Barack Obama sought to pressure Congress to try again to find measures to tame the nation’ s deficit — threatening to veto any ef fort to weaken or dis mantle a round of automatic cuts in defense and domestic programs, which is set to go of f in 2013. But still it shows another failure of democracy. For nearly three months, the panel has met secretly, barely abiding by its pledge to keep the public informed of its activities. So what does this mean for our future politics? This will mean nonstop deficit debates and the Republicans will continue to grow in strength—successfully manipulating the media in their favor . With more and more televised Republican debates, and recent failure of reduc ing the deficit, manyAmericans have now turned their attention to Republicans. Pres. Obama’ s strong opposition on “Do Nothing Congress” policy—in efforts to not be directly involved in negotiations and let democracy prevail–has been compromised. And so, in my honest opinion I believe the Democratic Party should have the rights to change government based on the President’s party af filiation—evidence of this is shown from our history books. However , we should not let it be a potential precursor of fate in the coming 2012 elections. Now with Christmas coming around the corner , we can honestly say that we need Santa Clause to spread some “Christmas Cheer!”

EZRAH continued from page7 government accountable for its criminal negli gence. In this “Age of Reciprocated Terrorism” where national security is primary , perhaps the government used Katrina’s fallout to conduct a “controlled chaos” military drill for future study and implementation? The armed com mando-like guards; The depravation of food, water, and medicine; The stench and horrid living conditions; The forced transport of people to-and-from sports stadiums (stadiums which can easily be converted into prison concentra tion camps)—all have suspicious overtones of eventualities that could unfold if any mass group attempted to incite a “civil uprising.” Since we are supposed to be “free” and have full access to information to shape our views, it’s understandable that some people would dispute that our thoughts are somehow being held

POW. But the ef fects of indoctrination are imperceptible to the untrained mind and eye. It’s dif ficult to self-detect the extent to which our minds are not free, being that our minds have never been free from the influences of Americanization. Proverbially , it’ s like being unable to “see the forest because of the trees.” Thought invariably produces substance. The substance (or lack thereof) of Black America is a product of our thinking—we think like a people who are content with being “governed by others,” rather than thinking like a people who strive to “govern for self.” There are conse quential differences between the two. Our current “Process of Thought” must therefore be countervailed with a sovereign-minded “Process of Thought”—Philosophy against philosophy; Ideology against ideology; Doctrine against doctrine; Truth against lies. Only then can our thoughts become sovereign enough to self-define and ultimately produce the true freedom and the quality of substance we justly deserve.

OMNILOGUE© - “All of us communicating with each other , so that we all come to a collective understanding, so that we all work toward the same goal.” ©

We are the 99%! Okay. I dig that. But if we are the 99 percent, then who are the 1 percent? In the many books, tapes, Cds, DVDs, lectures, symposiums, workshops, conventions and conferences I have frequented, I almost always hear that the dif ference between the “haves” and the “have nots” is the way we/they think. Everyone wants to be a have. No one wants to be a have not, do they? Do we? Do you? So, if “we” are the 99%, then who is this 1 percent, and how is “their” thinking dif ferent than “ours.” What is the 1 percent mentality? I think this is important, because how we answer this question will inform how we solve the critical and expanding problem of the col lapse of the global economic system and the rest of “civilization” as we know it. It is often attributed to Albert Einstein that, “We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we cr eated them.” Have you ever watched professional athletes in negotiation with the NFL, NBA, or MLB and thought, “What a shame, millionaires ar guing with billionaires.” What’s wrong with this picture? I think the rest of the world looks at us and asks the same question. Of the world’s 7 billion people, Europe and North America represent roughly 15% of the world’s population. However WE (those of us screaming that “we” are the 99%) consume 60% of the world’s resources. I think this puts us “99 percenters” in the top 10% of the world’s economic “elites”. So what I see is the top 2%-10% screaming at the top 1% to let “us” in the 1% door. But if we look at the other 90% of the planet, we are the top 1% com pared to them. [For more on this see: “ 20 Statistics Proving Global Wealth Is Being Funneled Into The Hands Of The Elite – Leaving Most Of The Rest Of The World Wretchedly Poor” (http://www.dailymarkets.com/economy/2010/11/30/20-statistics-provingglobal-wealth-is-being-funneled-into-the-hands-of-the-elite-–-leaving-most-of-the-rest-ofthe-world-wretchedly-poor/) When it comes to the way we are thinking, our mentality , we “99 percenters” have more in common with the “1 percenters” than we do with the 90 % of the planet living with far less wealth than we take for granted. This begs at least two questions: First, is it right for the 2%-10% to scream at the 1%, when what “we” really want is to be the 1%? Second, what are the 2%-10% going to do for the rest of the world if/when we get our share of the 1%’s wealth? I found another Einstein quote that I rarely hear , “Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius — and a lot of courage — to move in the opposite direction.” Love Your Neighbor. CMH [Talking About a Revolution – Tracy Chapman] clovis.honore@yahoo.com

Just Keeping It Real

Relationship Coversations

Satan has outsourced his services to the church! In this time of cut backs companies and other types of enti ties are finding themselves in need of outsourcing some of their services to cut down on overhead expenses such as payroll taxes, workers compensation, and other types of fringe benefits. It would appear that hell has picked up the same mantra and has outsourced many of its services to of all places the church! Some of you are wondering what I’m talking about and I’m glad you’re wondering. Let me make it clear . There are different levels and ranks in any army . You have privates, ser geants, lieutenants, captains, and generals to name a few. Depending on their rank and expertise there are given certain responsibilities. Another consideration as to who takes charge is the status of the one who it has been deemed as one who needs to be taken down or taken out. Bottom line you don’t send a general in to take out or take down a small patrol especially if that patrol is being led If you have questions you would like answered or topics discussed, by a ser geant. Are you following me? If not hold on it will become clear in just a few minutes. We learn in the scriptures please send all questions to face that we wrestle not with flesh and blood but with spirits in high book.com/connectwithangelaharris or email: places, in the atmosphere. That would lead one to view life challenges as one where evil spirits are being dispatched to run theharrisgroup@cox.net or havoc over your life and yet we find that they do not have to be twitter@KeepingitealAH. dispatched Satan can simply dispatch the church to do his bid - For more articles www.keepingitrealwithangela ding and it would appear that he is being very successful. Let me give you some examples of the havoc that is running harris.blogspot.com ramped and making some individuals lives a living hell: Backbiting people - Gossiping people Cliques (exclusion)- making folk feel unwelcomed. Turning up your nose at someone who doesn’t look like you, dress like you, drive the same car as you, or have the same resources as you (money). Failure to have love one for another (people can’ t stand the person sitting next to them, speaking, or singing then as soon as the person who is the object of your eier is out of view you’re falling out in the church, speaking in tongues, and saying “praise the Lord”.) How can you say you love a God you can’ t see and yet hate your brother? Pharisaical spirit (a critical spirit that lacks grace and mercy- quick to condemn someone’ s shortcomings while failing to acknowledge your own shortcomings.) Just straight up judgmen tal. Easily offended – skin so thin you take everything personal and then leave the church and bad mouth it only to push others away from the church and cause others to bad mouth the church and justify their lack of desire to attend an or ganized religious institution. Those causing dissension within the church Is it a no wonder the church has become a revolving door – folks come to the church and the air is so thick with strife or worse no sincerity or warmth so they fail to return. Then Satan uses those same outsourced individuals to wreak havoc in the home, on the work place, and in the community. So as you can see Satan has absolutely succeeded and benefited from his outsourcing tactics. The imps and demons have been replaced with individuals who if asked, would ensure you we couldn’t be talking about them. So to the church I say stop being a pawn of Satan and become who you were created to be vessels of honor to be used by God to save a dying world. As a foot note I use the “church” loosely as it is what and how many people associate the body of Christ. Just so you know in this instance the “church” is the gathering place that “Christians” congregate. It is not the bible definition of the church. The church is the people. It deals with the heart and the relationship to Christ. That was for free!! This dish from the hot internet talk show Keeping it real with Angela Harris: Topic discussed this week interracial dating. Interesting enough we didn’ t have much division on this topic. Let me say up front everyone was in agreement that everyone should be able to be involved with whoever they wanted. Where the line was drawn was when anyone one of anyone race or ethnicity refused to date or have anything to do with someone within their own race. This was defined as self-hatred. One woman ignited everyone by deciding to be in agreement with a Caucasian woman who wanted the sistah’ s to know that black men preferred them to black women because we as black women As he said they were too fat, too loud, too mean, too argumentative, too needy, too materialistic or carrying too much excess baggage. That set it off! The sistah’s weren’ t as enraged with the Caucasian women as much as they were with the African American woman who said she agreed with the Caucasian woman’ stance. You can imagine how the conversation went from there. All I can say is you surely missed some excit ing and thought provoking conversation. HOLIDAY CHEER WITH AN APPLE CLEANSE

By Lady Topaz On the heels of the holidays I sincerely wish each of you all the very best AND healthiest season possible. Yes, I know, we all slip up–and will–with the season’ s delicious foods being readily available. In fact, my mouth is watering right now as I think of the explosions of flavor in 7-Cheese Macaroni Pie, fried turkeys, various cobblers and ALL the fixin’s. Oh MY! What culinary delights await throughout the duration of the holidays and New Year’s Day! I say , “ENJOY them!” You deserve some treats after consistently working towards opti mal health but please remember moderation. Since we have only spent one year together discussing the body , detoxing and revitalizing I will not inundate you with alternative holiday recipes just yet. I believe our relationship will grow more as we take small steps and continue to steadily work towards a healthier you! That being said … I want you to really savor , and enjoy, the season KNOWING that there is a quick, easy, and simple, detox that you can do so the holiday delights do not stick around your waist, or in your intestines, too long. Here is a very simple detoxification routine involving apples that you can follow without making any major changes to your daily routine. HERE IS WHAT YOU – AND I – WILL DO Eat nothing but apples – any variety you like – whenever you are hungry, from the time that you wake up to the time that you usually have dinner . Apples, apples, and MORE apples! For the best results you can pick fresh apples off the tree or purchase organic apples; however, any fresh apples you purchase at the supermarket will be just fine. For dinner, you can have what you usually have. But, it would be best if you could have your dinner meal consist of at least 50% green vegetables. Here are a few examples of optimal dinner meals: § EXAMPLE A Steamed broccoli Brown rice Avocado § EXAMPLE B Steamed kale

Quinoa 2 organic eggs, scrambled § EXAMPLE C Steamed asparagus, spinach, and green peas 3 oz of wild salmon If you find yourself looking for a snack later on at night, go back to munching on apples. If you are using a green food powder and/or any other whole food supplements, take one or both with your dinner meal. That is it! Many people who have followed this detox routine have reported losing unwanted weight, feeling more ener getic, having clearer skin, and just plain feeling better than they have in a long time. This is a simple, cost ef fective and natural way to enjoy the benefits of detoxification. Also note that this routine will supply your body with healthy calories whenever you are hungry and the detox effects will not be so abrasive that you will have to take time of f of work or from your daily routine to get extra rest. Another nice feature to this routine is that you can benefit from following it for one day, several days, or even a few weeks. Just one note of caution : if you have high blood sugar or any pr oblems r elated to your blood sugar r egulating mechanisms, you may want to substitute apples with non-sweet vegeta bles like lettuce, celery, tomatoes, and cucumber. And of course, before following this or any other detoxification routine for more than a few days, it is prudent for you to consult with a health car e provider who can pr ovide you with personalized guidance as you seek to get healthier . By the way–lettuce and celery are fine to eat raw along with apples throughout the day – they will provide plenty of minerals, and will not take anything away from the cleansing process! I sincerely hope that this apple cleansing rou tine proves to be beneficial to your health. Here is to your EXCELLENThealth! And, of course, EXCELLENT holiday season! ********************** For additional information on healthy, holistic, nutritional supplements that will assist you with your healthy lifestyle visit T opaz’s website at: www.sherrytheus.isagenix.com or e-mail her with your thoughts and/or inquiries at topazst james@gmail.com.

Ladies, Ladies, Ladies……

Recently I had the pleasure of gathering 8 special ladies in my life and treating them to “A Ladies Day”. It wasn’ t until I was knee deep in my commitment that I realized how hard, strong and resilient the woman has become over the years. While I thought it was going to be an easy task to bring the women together to treat them to a well deserved day of pam pering it was more of a struggle and at one point I even wanted to give up and say to Heck with this. I know the men are saying I don’t get it, you can treat me any time you want to, just tell me what day and time and I will show up. I can just hear them now telling their wives/significant others they are going to hang with the boys for a day and the “WOMAN” without an ar gument says o.k. and handles the household. But not the woman we have to work out/arrange everything; even the single woman. After so many objections about the “Ladies Day” and being at the brink of giving up; something inside of me made me dig deep inside and say “W ait a Minute”. All of us Ladies have served 365 days of our life to other people whether it is to our jobs, husbands/significant others, children, community and or family. Why can’t we take a day off to pamper ourselves? It was this statement that changed the hearts of the women that I was gathering. They were over due to take off a few hours from their daily lives to be refreshed, renewed and revived. I picked up the ladies and headed north on the 5 freeway to Los Angles. We stopped at one of my friend’s house and met up with the other ladies of the party for a meet and greet and continental break fast before heading over to the “Ladies Luncheon”. It was amazing to see all of the ladies gel together smiling and talking as if they had known each other for years. We carpooled to the Proud Bird restau rant where the Ladies Luncheon was being held. It was amazing to see the level of detail that was placed into the luncheon. All of the ladies were captivated by the atmosphere, ambiance and level of excellence. As we were escorted to our table we noticed the array of fresh flowers as centerpieces; it looked as if we just walked into a wedding. The table had a special note for each of us, there were crystal diamonds on the table to tie into the theme and even the tissue box was gift wrapped. Our gift bags were not cheap either; each of us received a scarf, book marks, lotion and jewelry . Once we were able to digest that we were at the luncheon; away from the kids, the husband, the significant other, the job, the family and let all that was before us seep in, you could see the tears of joy in the ladies eyes and the smiles coming forth from their inner core. Next week on more of the Ladies Luncheon. Suicidal Man Taken Into Custody, Teen Faces 20 Years For Murdering Classmate

Jonathan Harris – Columnist November 26, 2011 – Suicidal Man T aken Into Custody A San Diego man who held up traf fic by threatening to commit suicide on an bridge over the Martin Luther King Jr. SR-94 freeway has been taken into police custody . The inci dent, which occurred on the 30th street over pass, began Tuesday at 2 p.m. and concluded 9 a.m. Wednesday. Though the freeway was not closed com-

pletely, some lanes were closed on both sides of the freeway of the 94, backing up traffic all the way to the I-15. The man, who remains unidentified, was seen walking along the outside of the fence over the freeway when California Highway Patrol and the San Diego Police Department responded. At one point a hole was cut in the fence, through which the man received water and cigarettes according to reports. This is not the first instance of someone attempting suicide on the 94 freeway . In October 2009 traffic was backed up for nearly the same amount of time by a woman threat ening to jump off of the Lemon Grove avenue overpass. Traffic was shutdown in both directions as law enforcement negotiated with the woman who eventually came down voluntari -

ly. She was taken immediately to a mental health facility. In August of this year a man jumped from the Lemon Grove Avenue overpass onto the 94-East. Despite attempts to resuscitate him, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Teen Sentenced For Murdering Classmate A California teen has been sentenced 21 years in jail after pleading guilty to second degree murder for killing his classmate three years ago in Oxnard, California. Brandon McInerney , 17, shot his E.O. Green Junior High School classmate Larry King, 15, in the back of the head twice during a computer lab class in a fit of anti-gay rage (King was openly homosexual). McInerney says he shot King because of how he dressed and how King interacted with him. The guilty plea avoids a second trial after the first resulted in a mistrial, with jurors being split over the char ge of voluntary manslaughter, first-degree or second-degree murder. During the first trial it was the prosecu tion’s contention that the murder was premed itated. The prosecution stated that McInerney practiced white supremacist ideologies, which portray homosexuality as sinful and an abom ination. Police discovered Nazi themed draw ings and items in McInerney’ s home. Despite this, prosecutors dropped the char ge of a hate crime as they prepared for the second trial. The defense did not dispute that McInerney shot King, but blamed what they said was a violent upbringing and King’ s unwelcomed sexual advances toward McInerney for the shooting. Executive Director of the Gay , Lesbian & Straight Education Network, Eliza Byard said in a stament, “V entura County along with communities and school districts everywhere must come together to promote a culture of respect and nurture the true potential found in every individual regardless of sexual orienta tion, gender identity, or gender expression.”

THANKSGIVING Continued from page 3 items that historians know for sure were on the menu are venison and wild fowl, which are mentioned in primary sources. It is plausible that lobster , seal and swans were on the Pilgrims’ menu as well. Their meals included many dif ferent meats. Vegetable dishes, one of the main components of our modern celebration, didn’ t really play a large part in the feast mentality of the seven teenth century. Depending on the time of year , many vegetables weren’ t available to the colonists. The pilgrims probably didn’ t have pies or anything sweet at the harvest feast. They had brought some sugar with them on the Mayflower but by the time of the feast, the sup ply had dwindled. Also, they didn’ t have an oven so pies and cakes and breads were not possible at all.

The food that was eaten at the harvest feast would have seemed fatty by 1990’ s standards, but it was probably more healthy for the pil grims than it would be for people today . The colonists were more active and needed more protein. Heart attack was the least of their worries. They were more concerned about the plague and pox. The most detailed description of the “First Thanksgiving” comes from Edward Winslow from A Journal of the Pilgrims at Plymouth, in 1621: “Our harvest being gotten in, our governor sent four men on fowling, that so we might after a special manner rejoice together after we had gathered the fruit of our labors. They four in one day killed as much fowl as, with a little help beside, served the company almost a week. At which time, among other recreations, we exer cised our arms, many of the Indians coming amongst us, and among the rest their greatest king Massasoit, with some ninety men, whom for three days we entertained and feasted, and

they went out and killed five deer , which they brought to the plantation and bestowed upon our governor, and upon the captain, and others. And although it be not always so plentiful as it was at this time with us, yet by the goodness of God, we are so far from want that we often wish you partakers of our plenty.” Seventeenth Century Table Manners The pilgrims didn’ t use forks; they ate with spoons, knives, and their fingers. They wiped their hands on lar ge cloth napkins which they also used to pick up hot morsels of food. Salt would have been on the table at the har vest feast, and people would have sprinkled it on their food. Pepper, however , was something that they used for cooking but wasn’ t available on the table. In the seventeenth century , a person’s social standing determined what he or she ate. The best food was placed next to the most important people. People didn’t tend to sample everything that

was on the table (as we do today), they just ate what was closest to them. People weren’t served their meals individually. Foods were served onto the table and then people took the food from the table and ate it.All the servers had to do was move the food from the place where it was cooked onto the table. Pilgrims didn’t eat in courses as we do today. All of the dif ferent types of foods were placed on the table at the same time and people ate in any order they chose. Sometimes there were two courses, but each of them would contain both meat dishes, puddings, and sweets. In a pilgrim household, the adults sat down to eat and the children and servants waited on them. The foods that the colonists and Wampanoag Indians ate were very similar , but their eating patterns were different. While the colonists had set eating patterns–breakfast, dinner , and supper–the Wampanoags tended to eat when they were hungry and to have pots cooking through out the day.
