Local group gives Barbie a ‘natural hair’ makeover
Rihanna blasts mag over use of racial slur
By SARA PAUFF - spauff@ledger-enquirer.com Candace McBride remembers wanting a Barbie doll as a girl. “It’s kind of an iconic doll. Every girl wants a Barbie. I wanted a Barbie when I was a girl,” she said. This Christmas, she’s hoping to give a few girls their own Barbies — ones that look a little more like them. McBride is part of an African-American natural hair group that meets regularly at the Columbus public library that decided to give Barbie dolls to girls at Booker T. Washington apartments for Christmas. Though Barbie comes in 50 different nationalities, most of the dolls, even the African-Americans ones have straight hair. “When you look for dolls, they all have straight hair,” she said, adding that she’s noticed that many of the dolls also have blue or green eyes. “It’s tricky even to find ones with brown eyes,” she said.She found an online tutorial that uses pipe cleaners and boiling water to give Barbie natural-looking curls. After they collect the dolls — they want to gather about 40 — group members will give them a natural hair makeover before giving them to the girls. “We wanted to show the girls that basically, it’s okay the way God made you,” said Jennifer Henderson, a member of the group. Henderson said her 2-year-old
Racial slurs are not an appropriate way to describe someone’s style. When Dutch fashion magazine Jackie ran a story about pop star Rihanna’s style, describing her as the “the ultimate n- bitch”, Rihanna didn’t shy from calling them on it. In the controversy’s wake, the editor who approved the story has since resigned from her post. Jackie magazine published a statement announcing this news on its Facebook wall on Tuesday. “I hope you can read English,” Rihanna tweeted to Jackie’s editor-in-chief, Eva Hoeke, “because your magazine is a poor representation of the evolution of human rights! I find you disrespectful, and rather desperate!! You ran out of legit, civilized information to print! There are 1000s of Dutch girls who would love to be recognized for their contributions to your country, you could have given them an article. Instead, u paid to print one degrading an entire race! That’s your contribution to this world! To encourage segregation, to mislead the future leaders to act in the past! You put two words together, with the intent of abasement, that made no sense. “Well, with all respect, on behalf of my race, here are my two words for you: F- you!!” The offending article was written in Dutch, although various outlets have run excerpts of the piece in English. And while it’s unclear whether Rihanna had a translator on hand to help her through the piece, the headline alone could have prompted the controversy. The story ran under the title: “De N- bitch.”

I’ll brush her hair and she’ll brush her doll’s hair,” she said. “She wants to do what she sees me doing.”Gladys Griffin, the owner of the Main Street Toy Shop, said her shop doesn’t carry Barbie dolls, but that dolls still remain popular, even with the advent of high tech toys. “Grandmothers have been buying dolls (for their grandchildren) for years,” Griffin said. “They definitely hand them down.” McBride said they chose Barbie to give as a gift because of her iconic status and the number of accessories she comes with. Barbie can be anything, she said. According to the Barbie website, the doll has had more than 108 careers and worn approximately 1 billion fashions since her premiere in 1959. “They can diversify and change accessories,” McBride said. Christmas and gratitude… Brian Pollard I wanted to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and to remind everyone that Christmas is a celebration of the birth of our Lord and a chance to share love and gratitude for our families and friends. I know I often get bogged down with material things and I usually get a huge gift around the Holiday Season of remembering the true message of Christmas. A friend of mine today asked if they should give a gift to their neighbors, my initial response,(thought but not said) why? And then the thought hit me “why not?” That short thought got me to thinking of how grateful I am for my life, my family, my friends and yes my neighbors. Gratitude for my friends and
family is more obvious than my gratitude for my neighbors. As many of you know I live in a pretty tough neighborhood and my neighbors share with me the apprehensiveness about leaving our homes empty when we all are at work, or leave for a few days of even over night. When one of us do leave our homes unattended we look out for each other’s homes, we collect the mail for each other’s homes, we work out parking availability, we share tools, I get plates of food from the Latino family that live next door, we share vegetables from our respective gardens and on and on. Sometimes I take this behavior for granted. Today I was reminded of all these “gifts” we exchange all year long. I am grateful for my neighbors.
Neighbors are the core of every community and I encourage all of us to become more aware and patient of our neighbors. During the blackout we experienced a couple of months ago I remember we all gathered and supported each other. Supported each other with conversation, food and we even shared a fire in my pit. Small actions that build a close relationship, a “connection” between us. For this I am grateful. Like most families we squabble throughout the year, and around the Thanksgiving and Christmas season we somehow pull together and increase that feeling of warmth and “connection” for each other. I am pretty involved within our community and as I am sure we all have experienced the difficulties at times to feel that “gratitude”, but I am just a little more aware of the gifts everyone gives me throughout the year, somehow those disagreements aren’t so major, somehow my ego gets a little smaller and I become a bit
more humble. Thank you God for the gift of humility! My wish for the community is that we all slow down and appreciate the lives we have. Certainly this was a tough year, and we have little control over the outside forces that contribute to the economic situations but we all have control over how we deal with it. Perhaps the spirit of the Lord will help us all to become more grateful for what we have, instead of the pain of what we don’t have. Maybe this season we slow down and appreciate the things we all take for granted, Thank God for our health, a roof over our heads, families, friends and neighbors. Merry Christmas to all my readers and “neighbors”, share the spirit of the Christmas season and do something kind today. Let’s end the year on a high note and pray for each other. We are all children of God and he has us in his hands, he will look after each of us if we let him. Merry Christmas!

If You Won’t Stand Up For Something, We’ll Lay Down For Anything Two weeks ago the title of my editorial was “Prayed Up, But Won’t Stand Up.” I began with the idea that Black Americans are prayed up from coast to coast. We pray for ourselves, our families, our enemies, and our friends—to me it would bothersome just to keep up with the list of things that we request from God, not to mention that we ask Him to provide them for us in a particular sort of way. We ask the Lord make our enemies our footstool. We want our enemies to love us, not to hate us, and to have all of our dreams fulfilled. The problem is that we place such a great responsibility on God and very little responsibility on ourselves. We ask God to help us achieve our goals, and yet go out and participate in things that are bad or illegal. You ask God to guide you and help you step over evil, but are forever walking toward those things that can harm you. We are prayed up, but won’t stand up for what is right. But if we won’t stand up for something, we will lay down for anything. The most unusual thing I’ve ever seen is taking place in Ohio. A group of Blacks are planning a contest where they are going to put dark women up against light women for comparison. It reminds me of the Roaring 20s and the Harlem Renaissance when it was fashionable to flaunt a light woman in front of your buddies and friends that had dark women. It wasn’t hard in the 1900s, and now we’re bringing this back in the state of Ohio? You can read about it in the following pages of this issue of the paper. If we don’t stand up for something, if we don’t stand up for belief, equality and tradition, we’ll lay down for whatever is available. Faith without works is dead. It’s useless. If you don’t have any ambitions or desire to do anything, you will flock with those birds of a feather doing nothing. I was in the dentist’s chair on a

EDITORIAL popular street in or city. As I looked out the window as the dentist prepared to work on me, he pointed out to me a group of men walking toward their daily street hang out. He told me that they hang out in one spot until their girlfriends and wives come home. They don’t work and don’t want to work because their women take care of them. They’re not going to stand up for something, and they’ll lay down for anything. The first thing that we must do in life is to establish some standards for ourselves about the things we will and will not do. After this, it is important to treat others the way you would have them treat you. Never allow money to rule you or be your prevailing force. Working is respectful and honorable; earning a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work only builds character in an individual. Until Next Week, Willie Morrow
By Adena Andrews Black athletes are living a life of double consciousness in America. A life of twoness. Twoness is being “an American, a Negro; two souls, two thoughts, two unreconciled strivings; two warring ideals in one dark body, whose dogged strength alone keeps it from being torn asunder,” as described by civil rights intellectual leader W.E.B DuBois. With all their fame, black athletes are one mistake away from being reminded of their twoness. They are not just Americans, but black people living in America. “Look at those beautiful black bodies,” Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling said, according to Elgin Baylor, reminding his athletes of their twoness. This rings familiar to slavery, when black men were ogled on auction blocks with the strongest buck pulling in the highest bidder. LeBron James got a quick lesson in his twoness last summer when he was knocked off his throne with one unpopular decision. Women aren’t safe from the twoness syndrome, either. A line judge feared for her life when Serena Williams, who said she hasn’t ever been in a fight, waved her racquet, pointed at and cursed at a line judge in a critical moment at the semifinal of the 2009 U.S. Open. And on any given Sunday you can see Michael Vick’s duality as many African-Americans around the country root for him against the backdrop of others calling for his condemnation and execution. The wealth and talent black athletes possesses can’t make America colorblind. Kanye West said it best: “Even if you in a Benz, you still a n**** in a coupe.” Though black athletes are marginalized, they enjoy unimaginable freedoms compared to their predecessors. Instead of sleeping in inadequate hotels, they throw lavish parties at the world’s finest resorts. And instead of being refused entry at local restaurants, they have meals named after them (i.e., the LeBron Burger). With all the progress they have made, there is still a mountain to climb. The same mountain African-Americans have been illustrating and climbing for centuries. Just when they think they’ve reached the summit another challenged is placed ahead of them. In Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s last speech he said, “[God] allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I’ve looked over. And I’ve seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people will get to the promised land.” How long until we reach the promised land? How long will it be until black athletes no longer live a life of double consciousness? How long will it be until they aren’t viewed as commodities? How long will it be until they are judged solely on the content of their character and not the color of their skin? Hopefully not long.

The Story of Four Southeast San Diego Heisman Trophy Winners By Sharmaine Starks One of the top vacation cities in the country, and the 9th largest city in the U.S., San Diego, California is renowned for it's beauty, climate and tourist attractions. People travel internationally to visit its beaches, the San Diego Zoo and Sea World. According to Forbes magazine, San Diego is also one of the wealthiest cities in the country. However, don't be fooled by the exotic palm trees. As one ventures deeper into the texture of the city, more specifically Southeast San Diego, there lives a culture often missed while on vacation here. The ironic thing is that non-natives can hardly believe that San Diego has a ghetto. But guess what? The same beautiful palm trees that line the coastal shores, also line the concrete streets of San Diego's hoods that are riddled with homicides, gang bangin, dope dealing and other drug related crimes. If you grew up here, this reality is far more pervasive than the beaches, The Zoo and Sea World. Some people who live here have rarely seen that beautiful side of their own city aside from the 4th of July, and on the flip side, most Southeast San Diego outsiders have never stepped foot in the hood. Yet when you grow up in San Diego's inner city, it's hard to escape to such beautiful landmarks when you're consumed with the devastation that the inner city often brings. Just ask the parents of Willie James Jones, a Lincoln High School Wrestling Legend, who had a full scholarship to Cornell University and before he could step foot on that campus, he was a victim of a drive-by shooting in Lincoln Park, one of San Diego's most notoriously violent hoods. The incident affected the community so deeply that a street was named in Willie James Jones' honor. In spite of the endless stories like this, four extremely determined young men did manage to survive the hood and make something of themselves, and before they were Heisman Trophy winners, they were first Ghetto superstars. The Heisman Memorial Trophy is awarded to the most outstanding college football player in the Country. The four San Diego natives who have been bestowed with this honor are Marcus Allen (1981), Rashaan Salaam (1994), Ricky Williams (1998), and Reggie Bush (2005), who have all graced Southeast San Diego and have become some of the City's most prized possessions. So why even after such accolades folks still don't know that Southeast San Diego exists?! But yet many outsiders jokingly remark that, "It Must Be In The Water", which refers to the incredible phenomenon that not one, but 4 out of the 76 all time Heisman Trophy winners have come from the Southeastern part of San Diego, California. So why hasn't anyone ever taken a moment to truly unveil this significant coincidence? *prior to "White Flight" (White flight is the sociologic and demographic term denoting a trend wherein white people flee urban communities as the minority population increases) in the 1960s and early 1970s, many neighborhoods in Southeast San Diego were subject to discriminatory restrictive covenants, a problem faced by African-Americans like former Councilman and Deputy Mayor George Stevens (an African
American), who was denied the opportunity to purchase a house in the Skyline Hills from a white realtor. Presently, much of the Skyline Hills, as well as other Encanto neighborhoods such as Emerald Hills, Lincoln Park, Mountain View, Encanto, and Valencia Park, have a substantial African-American population. *Southeast San Diego had long struggled with an image problem plagued by street gangs, drug dealing, assaults, and homicides throughout its communities. In 1992, then Councilman George Stevens, campaigned against any official designation of the area as "Southeast San Diego" since the name labeled the area in an entirely negative light. The name "Southeast San Diego," had long been viewed as shorthand for the community as being a crime-ridden and impoverished area. The San Diego Police Department's Southeastern Division includes some of the city's peak crime areas including the neighborhoods of Encanto, Paradise Hills, Lincoln Park, Chollas View, Sheiltown, and Southcrest. His campaign was successful and all official use of "Southeast San Diego" had been discontinued by the city. Most residents and locals however, still refer to the area as "Southeast." What is it about this part of the city that seems to almost breed Heisman Trophy winners, and successful Pro-Football players? No, it's not what's "in the water". It has more to do with Southeast San Diego's incredible Pop Warner Football League that was birthed in the inner city and was established in 1929, by Glenn "Pop" Warner, who was "a passionate coach of 44 years who was more interested in the character building aspects of football rather than the numbers." He was the captain of his own football team while in college and acquired the nickname "Pop" because he was older than most students. The first team that he coached was at the University of Georgia and at that time had no athletic facilities, playing field or stands. It has been said that the only place his team could practice and play was behind the school where "rocks stuck out of the red clay." In spite of these disadvantages, the University of Georgia was where "Pop" Warner eventually led his college team to its first undefeated season. This spirit of integrity, triumph, hope and competition has been embedded in the very fabric of Pop Warner Football, which has been maintained throughout the decades. The pint sized Southeast San Diego Pop Warner Football League participants nowadays compete on such a level that you often forget that they are just kids. And many argue that it is the Ghetto's nature to breed resilience because it has to. Literally, like in millions of ghettos around the world, from Soweto to San Diego, only the strongest survive. Child Development Experts such as Pediatricians, Psychologists and Physical Education teachers agree that a child's physical and emotional development is most crucial between the ages of 1 and 5. And that by age 6 their motor development begins to accelerate and that they, "Gain greater control over large and fine motor skills; movements are more precise and deliberate.. . and they enjoy vigorous running, jumping, climbing, and throwing". If we take this model and apply it to sports, it seems that the Pop Warner Football League figured out the proper
approach to laying the proper foundation for future Pro-Football players. And each group is broken down by age and weight. For example, Jr. Pee Wee ranges from ages 6-8, Pee Wee ranges from ages 8-9, Jr. Midgets 9-10 so forth and so on all the way up until age 14. And many parents, especially single moms, strive to submerge their kids in this program and provide needed direction and hope, rather than to lose their children to the streets. In many impoverished communities, the idea is that sports will occupy so much of a child's life, that they won't have time to get caught up in the street gangs. And it's not hard for The Pop Warner program to occupy all of a child's free time. Their weekly schedule is rigorous. They practice 5 times a week for 2 to 2 1/2 hours per day. Their daily practice is extremely focused and regimen and the Pro Football players in the making engage in daily proper tackling drills, proper blocking techniques, and go over 25 offensive and 25 defensive plays. Additionally, they have 2-3 pre-season scrimmages, special teams work on Fridays, as well as attend local high school games. On Saturdays they have morning weigh in and take their height and measurements before a game. The • Pop Warner program also strives to develop well-rounded young men and require a weekly grade check from all of their players who must maintain a GPA of 2.5 or better. The Southeast San Diego Pop Warner culture is an impressive sight to see. Young boys in their Football gear often no taller than your waistline, play real live Football games. And the crowd is packed with proud family members, young groupies, gang bangers and former players who all flock to watch this spectacle. And after they have played their hearts out they further enjoy their team comradery with food and fun. Yet in spite of hundreds of Pop Warner players who practice and play hard with dreams of becoming Pro-football players, the stigma of the community still feeds into Downtown San Diego's lack of support. And when players transition from Pop Warner to High School Football in the Southeastern region, it becomes blatantly obvious that this community is shamefully underserved. One former High School player even recalled having to wear outdated uniforms to play games and discovered (long after graduation), that it took ten years for his former team to receive updated uniforms. Not to mention the numerous stories of teams from more privileged neighborhoods canceling their games in Southeast San Diego at the last minute due to the disproportionate stigma of the negat i v e media
attention. Regatdless of the numerous obstacles an impoverished community may have, there are always diamonds in the rough. And as we examine what this San Diego Heisman Trophy phenomenon is, we will talk in depth with Marcus Allen, Rashaan Salaam, Ricky Williams and Reggie Bush as they reminisce about their life growing up in San Diego and playing Pop Warner. Of course we will note their amazing accomplishments such as Marcus Allen being "considered one of the greatest goal line and short-yardage runners in National Football League history", and Rashaan Salaam being the fourth major college football player to rush for over 2,000 yards in a season. Or when Picky Williams was the first player to ever be the only draft pick of an NFL team, and even when Reggie Bush won ESPN's Pac-10 Newcomer of the Year Award. All of which are amazing accolades and such accomplishments deserve to be highlighted. We would be remised to not have a conversation with many other incredible football players who have come out of San Diego and although not Heisman Trophy winners have left their mark in NFL history. Superstars such as Terrell Davis, who has a laundry list of Pro Football Player accomplishments that include being a two time recipient of the NFL Offensive Player of the Year Award and also being a two time NFL Super Bowl Champion and Super Bowl MVP. All of which any young boy coming up often fantasizes about. We will also speak with Heisman Candidates Alex Smith who played High School football with Reggie Bush, and Akili Smith who was 1 of the top 3 quarterbacks drafted into the NFL from Lincoln High School and was the 3rd player picked from that year's draft. However, most sports enthusiasts already know these impressive facts about these players, and if they don't know, they can easily Google them. "It Must Be In The Water" will take a deeper look at the foundation of the lives of these incredible Pro Football Stars, all reared in Southeastern San Diego. We will uncover never before seen photos and home videos, and listen to candid stories straight from the mouths of these Heisman Trophy winners. USDA Unveils New, Simple Tips to Stay Healthy, Active and Fit
First lady Michelle Obama does jumping jacks with 400 school children on the South Lawn of the White House, on October 11, 2011 in Washington, DC. WASHINGTON, DC — First Lady Michelle Obama is now a world record holder. She announced in an email Monday morning that her effort back in October to break the record for the most people doing jumping jacks in a 24-hour period has succeeded. Mrs. Obama says 300,265 people participated, which has shattered the old record of 20,000+ people. To break the record, Mrs. Obama led
around 400 students from Washington D.C. schools in jumping jacks on the south lawn of the White House. Other events for jumping jacks were held around the world on Oct. 11. She says in the above video, “More than anything, I want to say, thanks to every single young person who showed that exercise isn’t just good for you, but that it’s fun too. We’ve got an even bigger goal to after - ending childhood obesity in a generation.”

By Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack Today was an exciting day at USDA as I was joined by First Lady Michelle Obama and Surgeon General Dr. Regina Benjamin to unveil USDA’s new food icon, MyPlate. The icon is a departure from MyPyramid and serves as a quick, simple reminder to all consumers, built off of the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for all Americans. We all know that what we eat matters - MyPlate offers a visual reminder to make healthy food choices when you choose your next meal. MyPlate can help prioritize food choices by reminding us to make half of our plate fruits and vegetables and shows us the other important food groups for a well-balanced meal: whole grains, lean proteins, and low fat dairy. Today’s announcement was a monumental step forward for consumers and partners, as well. BIPARTISAN (WITH A TWIST)
W
ith 160,000,000 middle class Americans ready to face a $1,000 tax hike on New Year’s Day, the House Republicans are still not willing to compromise or do the Democratic process any justice. Rather than voting on a bill [Senate bipartisan bill] to support a payroll tax cut to millions of Americans, they are walking away from it. They are walking away from it by not putting it on the floor to vote; instead delegating negotiators to their bidding. They are so senile because they know the Senate bill [approved by both Senate Democrats and Republicans, with a majority of Senate Republicans approving the measure] would pass in the House and so by not voting on it, they are destroying the Democratic process or as Speaker John Boehner would say “the constitutional framework.” But most importantly the House Republicans are preventing 160,000,000 middle class Americans from receiving a $1,000 tax cut in their income. Their argument is about extending the payroll tax cut to a year [instead of two months, which Senate Democrats and Republicans have agreed on]. But rather than vote on it, which is the Democratic way, they want to leave it in the hands of negotiators, to serve their interest—if you haven’t realized it, this bill [to extend the payroll tax cut to two months] was co-authored by Senate Republican Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. So to have it not voted on the House floor, leaves room to suspicion on whether or not the Republican Party is divided. Speaker John Boehner, says the “people’s work.” He says that the job creators are the ones who administer payroll tax
cuts and are the ones who create jobs, but again I ask “who are the job creators?” More importantly how many job creators are out there? Speaker John Boehner and House Majority Leader Eric Cantor cannot even give out an estimate of how many job creators there are in America, when there are 160,000,000 middle class Americans who are suffering. As the year 2011 is coming to a close millions of Americans will remember two distinct events from this: the end of the Iraqi War, and the war in Congress. Eighty percent of Americans now have a dislike in Congress and in politics. With millions of Americans, out of work, how can we can be happy? However, the important thing to remember is that we live in a country where we can spend the holiday season with family friends without any fears of detainment and/or separation. So spend time at home, with family and friends and enjoy that freedom. Stay alive so we may see 2012 together. Happy New Year Everyone! –Prince

Therapy for Unity in the Community I think our community suffers from residual Willie Lynch Syndrome. How do we fix this? Black People need therapy! Individual and group therapy. We’ve been getting negative therapy from most of our environment for centuries! We still do. Look at the media. The most prominent presence of Blacks in the media are either comedy, sports, or “ghetto life” as a norm, including most rap/hip hop images. Please note: 99% of this media is owned, operated and controlled by non-Black people. “THEY” clearly have not been looking out for “US”! First, self-evaluation: Have you ever made, and do you now make, negative statements about people of African descent, whether about individuals, or groups of individuals, or the whole group? Do you make “categorical” statements? These are statements that include or imply “absolutes” like, “all” “none” “no one” “never” “always” etc. Statements like. (All) Black people don’t…, or Black people never…, or (all) Black people think that…, or Black people can’t…, I can’t find any Black people who can… The first thing I think we need to do for therapy is to stop “categorizing” Black people as all of anything. “Thou shall not misjudge or judge hastily” is an ancient Kemetic Commandment, 1 of 77 found in the ancient temples of Hej Ptah (Egypt). By using categorical statements about anyone or any group of people, not just Black people, is to deny the special purpose that each and every person has on this planet. Who we are today is not necessarily who we will be tomorrow. In fact, we rarely stay the same. By not judging our eternal being by today’s temporal/temporary actions, we give ourselves and each other an opportunity to grow and increase the quality of our being on tomorrow. So what do we replace these categorical statements with? Easy. The TRUTH. Since almost nothing is absolute in our experience, we simply have to tell the truth about it. For instance we can say: “MOST Black people in this country suffer from the ongoing effects of racism.” SOME Black people are very successful and at the same time make considerable contributions to the development of their communities.” MANY Black people have negative self images, and project these images on other Black people. “TOO MANY Black people have a ‘crab-in-a-barrel’ mentality.” I believe ALL of these statements to be true. But when we look at the problem as being partial and not absolute, we have a wedge we can use as a starting point to fix things. The next question is: “What is RIGHT with Black people, and how do we use this wedge of success to build ourselves up?” I’ll tell you next time. Love Your Neighbor. The True Meaning of Christmas I had the opportunity to really look at the reason for the season this Christmas. I took an in depth look at the reality of what we as “Christians” would say is the truth and I asked the question – Are we really celebrating Christmas with the right intent, the right heart, and the right perspective? I would submit with the statistics showing that over 14 million American’s are still paying for their Christmas purchases purchased in 2010, and I am sure many of that 14 million are Christians, that the answer to the question above would be a resounding “NO”. If you would allow me to make my point – As Christians we acknowledge December 25 as the day set aside to celebrate the birth of Christ, hence it’s His birthday. What happens on a birthday? So not only does this gift free the person who wounded you but more importantly it frees you and allows you to move on. 2. The gift of joy. Who is down and out? Who is feeling lonely and abandoned? Who is without hope? Maybe someone incarcerated, in a group home, in a homeless shelter, a convalescent home, or simply someone who is a stranger on the street, could use a moment from you that would bring them joy, light in a dark world. This gift exemplifies the scripture that reminds us when you’ve done for the least of these you’ve done for Christ. 3. The gift of love – unconditional. This gift can be shown in many ways, one tangible way is by providing resources that drip from a genuine heart of love and not condemnation. It might be groceries for someone you know has been laid off, helping someone to pay their rent who you know simply doesn’t have resources right now to make those ends meet. It might be helping someone pay for their utility bills or other areas of need. This gift of love might be giving them simply a warm handshake (a hand transfer of money) because God has blessed you so that you have a harvest, an overflow to bless someone. 4. The gift of time. Maybe there are some seniors or single individuals where your time would bless them immensely. Tending to their lawn, helping fix things around the house, taking care of minor maintenance issues with vehicles, fixing some meals, watching their children or aging parent are a few ways you could give of your time. These are just a few ideas but I am sure you get the point. One interesting thing about these gifts is that none of them put you in debt, cause you to be grumpy, force you to deal with long lines, make you deal with rude people, there are no gifts to return because you don’t like them and in return you receive such joy and love and satisfaction that someone was blessed by you on behalf of the One who made it all possible. Another facet about this season that we should reflect on it that Jesus is not the reason for the season unless you view the season as one where you say “thank you” 365 days of year. We should not be nicer, more benevolent, and happier only in December. People need to receive from us on a regular basis. The scripture reads that “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son.” This love is a selfless love, this love is a compassionate love, this love is humble love, and this love is meant to give hope, joy, love, and kindness all year long. So when celebrating the birth of Christ, celebrate it with the right intent, the right heart, and the right perspective. Happy Birthday Jesus and Thank you!!

Motown fitting place for Gates to break record By Chris Jenkins He could not have grown up in a more different environment than the one where he’s made himself an NFL star, a perennial Pro Bowl player who’s three receptions away from setting the career record for the franchise that’s known more for passing the football than any other. If he couldn’t set that record in San Diego, though, Antonio Gates would very much like it to be in Detroit. A perfect place, in a different way, for it to happen. How fortuitous that the weekend after Gates got that close to Hall of Fame receiver (and Chargers coach) Charlie Joiner’s team record of 586 catches, the Chargers are playing against the Lions at Detroit, where Gates was born and raised and grew out of some tough circumstances. “It would be very cool,” said Gates. “That’s where it started, where the foundation was built, why Antonio Gates is the person he’s become. You really don’t know where you’re going if you don’t know where you’re from. “I credit a lot to Detroit for what I’ve become, the experiences I had, the things I had to overcome. Detroit taught me to grow up fast. San Diego’s a beautiful city that’s been great, but there are a lot of people in Detroit who helped me get there, helped me get to this point.” The Chargers are at the point where they have to win Saturday, and for them to do that, they may need a lot more than two or three catches from Gates. To put it nicely, the Lions are a much better team than the one the Chargers beat 14-7 in Gates’ only previous game at Detroit, his rookie season of 2003. At the time, Gates was still a sort of grand experiment of sorts, a former Kent State basketball player who hadn’t played football since he was a two-sport star at Detroit Central High. It was the following season, 2004, that Gates became a major force who helped re-define the tight-end position in the NFL. “The difference between that first trip back and this is like night and day,” said Gates. “You know, some people there still haven’t seen me
play football. I was such a basketball guy, they didn’t believe I played football there, too. I got a lot more attention for the basketball.” Jackson no-go for drills The Chargers don’t have to reveal the upcoming-game status of players until Friday, but their injury report Thursday included the absence of wide receiver Vincent Jackson (groin) and linebacker Travis LaBoy (knee) from the team’s final workout before departure for Detroit. Returning to the practice field on a limited basis was nose tackle Antonio Garay, who missed Wednesday's session with a toe problem. Roof football No worries. Well, there will be those 70,000 fans at Ford Field, crazed by the notion that the Detroit Lions can make the postseason for the first time in 12 years with a defeat of the visiting Chargers on Christmas Eve. There could be enough vibration in the place to make the crossbar and uprights act like big tuning forks. But no wind. No snow. No sleet. “No elements, no adjustments,” said Chargers placekicker Nick Novak. “Just hit your best ball.” Novak’s been the Chargers’ placekicker since

We will capture the annual excitement that a Lincoln and Morse High School Football game brings, which is the same intensity as the "Ghetto Bowl" (Pop Warner Championship Game), if not more because, these young boys feed into the High School Sports programs and carry their reputations from Pop Warner with them. And this particular Lincoln Morse rivalry brings in a spectacle of mass proportions. Not only are they rival High Schools, but the hoods that house these schools (Lincoln Park Bloods and Skyline Pirus), have a long history of violent gang altercations. In recent years gang homicides have dropped considerably however, prior to George Stevens' community activism, especially during the 80's and 90's when some of these Heisman Trophy winners played Pop Warner and High School football, gang activity terrorized Southeast San Diego
adding yet another level of intensity to the games. We will also talk to regular neighborhood folks and the coaches who had the privilege of watching these Super Stars, as little boys, grace the San Diego football fields. And in spite of this part of town's reputation, viewers will inevitably get to know the strength and pride that is at the heart of San Diego's South Eastern community. Nevertheless, like most kids from the "other side of the tracks", making it as a Pro-Ball player means a better life for their family and the ability to give back to their, community by providing resources in order to make it a more upwardmobile place, so that a city like San Diego won't be embarrassed to admit that like all major Cities, they too have a Ghetto. And as these four Heisman Trophy winners look back at their own humble beginnings and some of the trappings that they managed to dodge, such as dope using, dealing and gang bangin, (even if they were directly affiliated with this culture), we will get a true sense of how their experience playing Pop Warner Football established the foundation that lead them to Pro Football Superstar status. HOW THE BODY WORKS: OVERVIEW OF THE NERVOUS & ENDOCRINE SYSTEMS By Lady Topaz A thorough discussion of how your body works best begins with an overview of your nervous and endocrine systems, as these two organ systems act as co-directors of all of the activities that occur in your body. Now remember, this follows last week’s coverage of how the body works “basically.” Here we are going a little bit deeper; exploring the next level in great health. To put it simply, your nervous and endocrine systems continuously monitor the well-being of each of the billions of cells in your body, and they continuously take action through messenger systems to keep all of your cells as healthy as possible. A Key Difference in How Your Nervous and Endocrine Systems Work Though the nervous and endocrine systems share the director’s seat of your body, they fulfill their roles in completely different ways. Your nervous system senses and controls every part of your body through its many nerves. Sensory receptors located throughout your body constantly send information through nerves to your brain; your brain digests this information; your brain then decides on appropriate action, and executes the action by sending additional information out to the target cells through other nerves. For example, the CLASSIC, if you accidentally touch a hot pan, sensory receptors register pain almost instantaneously, this information travels through nerves to reach your brain, your brain understands that your hand is in danger of being injured in its current position, and your brain sends information down other nerves that tells your muscles to jerk your hand away from the pan. As you almost certainly know from real life experience, transmission of information throughout your nervous system can occur within milliseconds. But it can also occur at a slower pace - good examples of slower and
deliberate activity within your nervous system are all of the activities that must take place within your sensory receptors, nerves, brain, and muscles when you park your car in your driveway, type an e-mail, wash vegetables, take a shower, or hit a tennis ball. Your endocrine system consists of a number of glands that produce and secrete hormones that make their way into your bloodstream. Once in your bloodstream, your hormones travel through your body and trigger specific actions whenever they encounter cells that display compatible receptors. Because your endocrine system monitors and controls the well-being of your cells via your circulatory system, it generally works at a slower pace than your nervous system, sometimes taking hours to produce a desired effect as a hormone reaches its target destination and carries out its job. For example, if your blood volume decreases for any reason (like dehydration), your endocrine system will sense this and call your kidneys, liver, lungs, adrenal glands, and blood vessels to action, with the end result being an increase in blood volume. So your nervous system uses sensory receptors, nerves, and your brain to monitor and control the well-being of all of your cells, while your endocrine system uses your blood circulatory system to accomplish the same thing. Your nervous system operates at lightning speed, while your endocrine system generally works more slowly to create changes in your biochemistry. Strands of One Big Web Your nervous and endocrine systems are highly interdependent in behavior, much like all the strands of a spider web are intimately connected in stability and behavior. The interdependent relationship between your nervous and endocrine systems begins in a tiny area of tissue in your brain called your hypothalamus. The Holidays…. Part 3 So Christmas is Sunday and I still don’t have any plans on how I’m going to celebrate it. So not like me but I do have a very valuable explanation. I went on a two week spiritual journey; so things are different now. I can’t write about my experience until I digest it fully and apply the things I learned to my life. So therefore; it will be awhile before you read about my spiritual journey/vacation. I can say this I am going to have to see the Nutcracker sometime this week as it is a tradition of mine. I missed the San Diego Civic Youth Ballet’s rendition of it this year. I like going to theirs because it cost only $10 and the performance is phenomenal. The Civic Center is hosting “The Nutcracker with the San Diego Symphony” December 17-23. The ticket prices range from $25-$80. I will check them out this year. Now to tell you the truth I rather go see Dave Koz & Friends at the Balboa Theatre. I love some Jazz; it’s a good a way to get the creative juices flowing. There is only one performance which is Friday, December 23, 2011 at 8 pm and the cost ranges from $65-$85. There are some heavy hitters coming along with him such as Jonathan Butler, Rick Braun, and Candy Dulfur. I know where I’m going to be on Friday. If you see me don’t forget to come and say hi and take a picture with me. Sunday is normally church (online) and then rushing to the television to watch Football for me. Hey, at least I’m not watching church online and football at the same time. I gather that I’m going to have to open myself up and give a little bit of myself this Sunday. Pray for me that I can be separated from the television long enough to cook (lol). Or maybe I will cook on Saturday and warm it up on Sunday. Don’t ask me what I’m going to do for New Year’s Eve because I don’t even know. I have so many invitations but not really feeling anything in particular. Of course there is Viva Las Vegas and the Complimentary room and flight; Watch Night Service at church in Los Angeles, My family is throwing a party, Fire works & bomb fire at the beach. Oh yeah I forgot about the Royal Princesses and Knights Social Charity Group hosting their 16th Annual New Year’s Eve Black & White Dinner Dance. Now that actually sounds intriguing. Anyone can go it will be held at the Sheraton Hotel located at 1433 Camino Del Rio South, San Diego, CA 92108. It’s formal attire with music by John Phillips. Your hypothalamus receives information from all of the major areas of your brain, your major organs, and your eyes, and it registers sensations like pain, temperature, hunger, thirst, lust, stress, fear, and anger. Once your hypothalamus registers incoming information and decides what your body needs to best survive and be healthy, it uses your autonomic nervous system to affect the behavior of all of your major organs. Examples of such effects are increased heart and lung rates, increased blood flow to your skeletal muscles or digestive organs, changes in how much light enters your eyes and how well your eyes can focus on distant objects, production of sweat or shivers, and arousal of sexual organs. Your hypothalamus also produces a number of different hormones that directly impact your pituitary gland, which is about the size of a green pea, and is located just below your hypothalamus. Amazingly, your pea-size pituitary gland is the chief gland of your endocrine system; it has two distinct portions that produce and secrete hormones that govern the activities and well-being of all of your organ systems. Actually, because your hypothalamus governs the activities of your pituitary gland, it may be more accurate to call your hypothalamus the master gland of your endocrine system. But technically, your hypothalamus is considered to be specialized neuroendocrine tissue because of its unique ability to affect both your nervous and endocrine systems. Ultimately, what is important to know is this: Together, your hypothalamus and pituitary gland have significant, ongoing influence over every other component of your endocrine system. “Other components” includes your thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, pineal gland, adrenal glands, and all organs and tissues that secrete hormones - these organs and tissues include your kidneys, liver, stomach, small intestine, pancreas, heart, skin, thymus, and fat tissue. The ovaries, testes, and placenta also secrete hormones, and are considered to be important components of the endocrine system. The Big Picture In order get a sense of how your nervous and endocrine systems work together to keep you well, consider the example of hiking in a national park somewhere in Alaska late at night and coming upon a hungry grizzly bear. As soon as your eyes detect the bear and your brain understands the bear’s desire to make you her next meal, your hypothalamus uses your autonomic nervous system to immediately prepare your eyes to see better, your brain to think more quickly, and your heart, lungs, and large skeletal muscles to allow you to run faster or fight with more strength. Interestingly, your autonomic nervous system accomplishes some of the above by stimulating the release of epinephrine and norepinephrine from the inner portion of your adrenal glands this is yet another way in which your nervous and endocrine systems are intertwined in their roles as governors of all of your physiological activities. Through your endocrine system, your hypothalamus stimulates the release of glucocorticoids (mainly cortisol) from the outer portion of your adrenal glands. Glucocorticoids increase
the production of glucose, which ensures adequate availability of fuel to fight or run away from the bear. Here are the main points to take away from this article: All of your nervous and endocrine system’s responses to physical danger also occur when you experience any type of emotional stress - to a lesser degree than in the example of encountering a grizzly, but ultimately, all of your cells are exposed to the same stress-related neurotransmitters and hormones whenever you are feeling emotionally stressed. So the result of ineffectively managing emotional stress over a long period of time is premature aging and disease due to chronically being in fight-flight mode. Also, in most cases, it does not make any sense to try to address just one particular problem within your nervous or endocrine systems with a specific remedy, like medication or a nutritional supplement. For example, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s disease are all systemic neurological challenges that are affected by every food that you eat, every hour of fatigue that you experience, and every emotion that courses through and touches every cell in your mind and body. The same goes for almost all endocrine-related health challenges. For example, it is not possible to isolate the health status of your thyroid gland, to identify one, two, or five factors that are contributing to thyroid dysfunction. Pat Robertson Advises a Father To Tell His Son To “Un-Acquire” Being Gay

By Jonathan Harris, Columnist December 24, 2011 - I think at this point, every logical, intelligent, even somewhat rational, coherent human being has stopped giving any credence to the nonsensical rants of Pat Robertson. In case you are not one of those people, do consider his latest absolutely asinine advice to the father of an openly gay child. On the Christian Broadcasting Network’s 700 Club, host Robertson told the father, “Normally speaking, a person who has acquired this can un-acquire it. We’ve had many people who have indeed left the homosexual lifestyle and gone into a heterosexual relationship and have been very, very happy.” Dear gays, yes, please un-acquire “it”. Go back to that precise moment when you chose to
acquire “it” and un-acquire “it”. Mr. Robertson, to lead by example, will you do that with your alleged heterosexuality? Because there have been many people who have indeed left the heterosexual lifestyle and gone into a homosexual relationship and have been very, very happy. This is not the first nutty comment Robertson has made regarding, particularly on the subject of homosexuality. Earlier this year Robertson spoke out against Gay Days at Disney World Orlando, an event that attracts over 150,000 gay and lesbian travelers to the area. He said, “I would warn Orlando that you’re right in the way of some serious hurricanes, and I don’t think I’d be waving those flags in God’s face if I were you, this is not a message of hate–this is a message of redemption. But a condition like this will bring about the destruction of your nation. It’ll bring about terrorist bombs; it’ll bring earthquakes, tornadoes, and possibly a meteor.” Clearly everyone should have run for cover because terrorists, tornadoes and meteors came to Disney World while homosexuals enjoyed the theme park’s rides.
Just weeks ago Robertson commented on the Obama Administration’s promise to use foreign aid to promote gay rights abroad, saying, “This country cannot continue to violate God’s principles and to make a mockery of His laws and think we’re going to get away with it.” Mr. Robertson, again you’ve hit the nail on the head. God will let us as a country get away with killing hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians as a result of invading another nation, God will let us get away with executing people here in our own country, but you know what God will not allow? Prior to us handing out foreign aid, first looking at the way the nations that are up to receive such aid, treat their citizens, particularly along the lines of not practicing discrimination and basic human rights violations. That is simply outrageous and God is not going to stand for it right Mr. Robertson? Robertson’s most recent comments should really come as no surprise, this is after all the same man who said the “feminist agenda is not about equal rights for women. It is about a socialist, anti-family political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians.” Personally, I would be very interested to find out the percentage of feminists that are husband leaving, children killing, anti-capitalist, lesbian witches. Those numbers must be through the roof. Dear Mr. Robertson, it is time for you to seek assistance with “un-acquiring” your seemingly boundless stupidity. To use a public platform to disseminate and encourage discrimination is one thing; it is another thing entirely to try to legitimize your nonsensical vitriol by trying to bring God into it, thereby using the faith of your flock as a choke chain to pull them into your dangerous ignorance. It is pathetic and irresponsible. Mr. Robertson, you are clearly drowning in a sea of idiocy, ignorance and prejudice. I know they say misery loves company but that sea is vast and there are plenty of people already drowning in there with you, please do society a favor and stop trying to recruit others. Most of us work very hard to stay out of those waters.
