Welcome W
elcome to the 69th season of San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory and our annual Celebration of Music Education concerts. These special concerts bring together hundreds of the region’s most talented musicians to share the joy and accomplishment of outstanding classical music with friends, families, and the San Diego community. Each season, all of us at SDYS aim to provide students of all ages and skill levels with unique music education opportunities. Every week, SDYS’ students come together to combine their talents and develop lifelong friendships through the bond of music. The students on stage today represent the very best and brightest from throughout San Diego County. In addition to their pursuit of outstanding musical accomplishment, they are leaders in their academic, athletic, and community outreach endeavors. We look forward to seeing them grow in the years ahead knowing they will join our alumni in orchestras around the world, serve as master teachers, pioneering researchers, entrepreneurs and accomplish their dreams in other important fields.
We are honored that so many parents and families have entrusted SDYS with part of their child’s education. Our faculty of professional educators, pedagogues, and musicians provides a comprehensive long term educational experience for all of our students. SDYS’ programs are designed to teach citizenship, responsibility, develop leadership, integrity, and instill personal excellence through the group ensemble experience. This holistic approach to music education is what guides our programs’ focus on students’ achievement each season. Our entire organization of staff, board and volunteers is committed to providing significant and lasting musical benefits to students as well as bringing the joy of music to our audiences and the community. Today’s concerts are a celebration of that pursuit as well as a tribute to our partners in music education from public and private schools, private studios, and universities. We thank all music educators in attendance and those unable to join us for the incredible mentoring and training you provide students. We are equally thankful for the support our fellow music educators continue to show for SDYS. At this year’s concerts, we are proud to recognize Eric Hagen and Paul Johnston as our 2014 Profiles in Music Education Award recipients. Both Mr. Hagen and Mr. Johnston have made such a positive difference in the lives of thousands of students across San Diego County. In addition, they have been lifelong champions and advocates for all school arts and music programs in San Diego County. Thank you for joining us today and for your belief in music education. Your support enables SDYS to bring the life-changing power of music to all of our students and to the community. We are proud to have you join us for this tribute to music educators as we launch our new concert season! Enjoy the concerts!
JEFF EDMONS Music Director
19th Annual Celebration of Music Education Concert | 1
San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory is proud to present the 2014 Profiles in Music Education Awards to:
ERIC HAGEN “Imagine all of the places, events, and people that playing your instrument will take you to throughout your life. Music is about so much more than music!” The 1pm concert honors Eric Hagen, who is currently serving in his 11th year as the string orchestra director of EastLake Middle School. During these years, he has taught beginning orchestra to 7th graders, who then in their second year of playing, have performed at Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm, and various nursing homes around San Diego. Mr. Hagen is now also directing the first string orchestra ever to be offered at Hilltop Middle School in an effort to continue the music education of the SDYS Community Opus Project students who are now reaching the 7th grade. In order to keep learning from others, Mr. Hagen has performed cello in various community symphony orchestras, quartets, and cello choirs in San Diego over the past 14 years. Mr. Hagen was introduced to strings in the 8th grade, courtesy of St. Paul Public Schools in Minnesota. He played cello throughout high school and continued playing in quartets and the symphony orchestra at Macalester College where he earned a B.A. in Biology. Mr. Hagen subsequently served as a Science teacher/trainer in the U. S. Peace Corps in Nepal from 1994-96, lugging around and playing his cello, where he found that music is a universal language and ice-breaker that connects people of differing cultural backgrounds. After attaining a Master’s Degree in Multicultural Education in 2000, Mr. Hagen located to San Diego to teach in Sweetwater Schools. He began coaching cello for the district orchestra in 2001.
PAUL JOHNSTON “School Fine Arts Programs allow students to explore their creativity, express themselves and learn “life lessons” in a way no other school program can.” The 6pm concert honors Paul Johnston, who is now in his 37th and final year of Public Education. Mr Johnston has taught in the Sweetwater Union High School District for the last 36 years, with 26 years at Montgomery High School and the last 10 years at Otay Ranch High School. He attended San Diego State University receiving a BA in Music Education and a Special Education Credential. Over his career he has taught Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Marching Band, String Orchestra and Special Education Classes. Mr. Johnston began his study of music with trumpet lessons from Jack Harper the original owner of Harper’s Music Store in Chula Vista. He also studied with professional trumpet players Jack Maynard and Charles Lauer and finally with Jack Logan at San Diego State University. While in college Mr. Johnston played in several Rock Bands. He later directed Church Choir in Chula Vista as well as performing with Community Bands in Chula Vista and National City. Mr. Johnston lives in Chula Vista with his wife Elenita, and is looking forward to retirement.

William Francis McBeth “Canto”
Richard L. Saucedo Along an English Countryside
William Francis McBeth composed the wind band piece “Canto” in 1977. McBeth was a prolific American composer whose wind band works are highly respected, and many of which are considered staples of wind band literature. “Canto” was commissioned by the All-Japan Band Association and is inspired by the melody “Sakura” which is Japanese for “Cherry Blossom.”
Composed as a tribute to Sir Malcolm Arnold, Along an English Countryside captures and celebrates many of the characteristics of English band music. The English military band tradition extends through many great composers including Gustav Holst. The rollicking nature of the meter winks at the reel and the dargason. The dargason is a form of partner dance, much like a line dance, performed in a quick triple meter. Saucedo adds some flair to the rhythm by adding some unexpected accents and groupings. Along with evoking the dance, the meter of Along an English Countryside also reminds the listener of shanty songs from sea-farers and pirates. The 12/8 meter is used to evoke the ocean in movies like Pirates of the Caribbean as well as English Folk Dance.

Ron Grainger The Theme from “Doctor Who” Arranged by Adam Pezdek Having recently celebrated it’s 50th anniversary, Doctor Who chronicles the adventures of everybody’s favorite time traveler, The Doctor. In 1963 Australian composer Ron Grainger composed the theme for this perennial BBC television programme and Delia Derbyshire from the BBC Radiophonic Workshop created the first recording of it, complete with white noise, spliced together analogue tape, and various test-tone oscillators. Instead of room calibrating equipment and manipulated analogue tape, today’s arrangement features a traditional wind band. John Philip Sousa “Semper Fidelis” Written in 1888 by the American March King, John Philip Sousa, “Semper Fidelis” came to be known as the official march of the United States Marine Corps. Latin for “Always Faithful,” “Semper Fidelis” is also the motto of the U.S. Marines. In a 1927 interview Sousa remarked, “I wrote ‘Semper Fidelis’ one night while in tears after my comrades of the Marine Corps had sung their famous hymn at Quantico.”

Barry Kopetz American Sketches
Shanty Boys and Rich Old Farmers Teedle Dinktum Dinktum Day! The Pinery Boy The Jam On Gerry’s Rock
American Sketches, takes us from the countryside of the British Isles to the folk songs of Wisconsin. The English military band style has inspired many, from Australians, like Percy Grainger, to Russians, like Igor Stravinsky. Of course, the American band tradition, hailing from Sousa, cannot be ignored. The way Barry Kopetz orchestrates his music reminds the ear of both Sousa’s bright and cheerful melodies interspersed with darker and more melancholic moods. The four-movement form of American Sketches is a nod to the Suites for Military Band by Holst, the second movement of Kopetz’s work is notably more whimsical. Gary D. Ziek Quintology, The Science of Five Quintology is precisely as named — a study of five. The vast majority of music is composed in meters of two, three and four, so much so, that many joke that musicians struggle to count higher than four! In Quintology, the beat pattern is grouped into repeating sets of five beats throughout. In the opening and closing sections, the five beats are divided in half, to make ten and then re-grouped (3+3+2+2) to create a syncopated rhythm. In the middle section, a lyrical melody unfolds over five notes, but moving half as fast as the original five beat meter. These layers of embedded similarity help to make a rich and exciting musical texture that is open to the listener.

Ludwig van Beethoven Gioacchino Rossini Turkish March, from The Ruins of Athens, Op. 113 La Gazza Ladra Overture The “Turkish March” heard this afternoon is from a set of incidental pieces, or pieces of music composed to accompany a theatrical play, for The Ruins of Athens. These pieces come from late in Beethoven’s life and display his keen ability to encapsulate a mood or idea. The Turkish March as a stylistic reference appears throughout Beethoven’s life, most notably in a set of six variations, Op. 76. Beethoven, a composer known to take his time to compose music, wrote the music for The Ruins of Athens with an unusual expediency. His hard work paid off with a brilliant opening performance in 1811.
With grand French style, Rossini’s Overture to La Gazza Ladra, or The Thieving Magpie, sets the stage for the whimsical and over-the-top production to come. Melodrama ensues after the discovery of a theft! A silver spoon has gone missing and the only viable culprit is Ninetta, the servant girl. The only person who can corroborate Ninetta’s story is father, who cannot be found. The servant girl, punished to death, is saved at the last minute when it is discovered that a bird, her Magpie, had taken the spoon. Gioacchino Rossini William Tell Overture
Edvard Grieg Sigurd Jorsalfar, Three pieces from Incidental Music, Op. 56
William Tell is Rossini’s last of 39 operas. The overture, performed this afternoon, shows the experience of a master. Rossini’s control of the orchestra is on full display, Vorspiel taking complete advantage of the range and depth of the Intermezzo ensemble. Most notably, the famous and oft quoted theme to accompany horseback riding employs a string technique Huldigungsmarsch where the bow of the string players bounce along the Sigurd Jorsalfar is an orchestral suite compiled in 1872 from string, producing an exciting and energized texture. The incidental music to celebrate King Sigurd I of Norway. The dynamism of this music was recognized by Walt Disney and original suite is comprised of nine movements, though the other early cartoon-makers. Many of the popular associations first three are most famous. The original plot of Grieg’s suite come not from Rossini’s Italy, but from the technicolor world involves two joint ruling brothers of Norway, Sigurd and of early animators. Øystein. The beautiful maiden, Borglid, is loved by the first brother, but neglects her own feeling towards the second brother. The stately Hommage March is a rousing and patriotic composition. The opening fanfare is contrasted by a stirring trio of strings which leads to a broad and triumphant primary melody. The march is heard in Act III after the two brothers have reconciled following a contest. Steeped in Norwegian Folklore, Sigurd Jorsalfar, continued Greig’s efforts to establish a national musical identity for Norway.

William Schuman Overture to Chester
Ludwig van Beethoven Symphony No. 1 in C Major, Op. 21
William Schuman was born in 1910 in New York City. From a young age, he had a wide range of musical interests including classical, popular and jazz music. He even wrote 40 songs for radio and vaudeville with his neighbor Frank Loesser (who wrote the lyrics and music to Guys and Dolls). Not until 1930 did Schuman become focused on writing classical music when he won the first Pulitzer Prize for music composition in 1942 for his Secular Cantata No. 2 entitled “Free Song”.
The first symphony by Beethoven was written when the composer was just twenty nine years old and displays many influences from his teachers, the famous Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
Jeff Edmons, Music Director
After a short career as Director of Publications at Schirmer’s music publishing company, he became President of the world renowned Juilliard School of Music. He later became involved and helped with the development of the Lincoln Center by serving as the president. In 1989, Schuman received the Kennedy Center Honor “for an extraordinary lifetime of contributions to American culture.” “Chester” is based on the third movement of Schuman’s New England Triptych (also subtitled, “Three Pieces for Orchestra After William Billings”). William Billings is regarded as the first American choral composer, who lived from 1746-1800. This third movement was adopted by the Continental Army as a marching song, which is built from these lines of text by Billings:
Let tyrants shake their iron rod, And slavery clank her galling chains, We fear them not, we trust in God, New England’s God forever reigns. The foe comes on with haughty stride, Our troops advance with martial noise, Their vet’rans flee before our youth, And gen’rals yield to beardless boys.
Jeff Edmons, Music Director
The first movement opens with a question. A dominant seventh (music term) is the foundation of what we call “tension and resolution”. Not only does Beethoven begin with it, he inserts it again and again with a resolution in a different key, confusing the audience as to where the symphony is actually starting. A musical joke, is what some call this piece, which contradicts much of what we believe Beethoven to be: a serious, dramatic, and sometimes angry or mad composer. The images of Beethoven and his messy hairstyle is likely to come to mind. However, it is not really until later in Beethoven’s life did his anger at his inevitable deafness and ultimately at life that drove his music to become more serious in nature. Don’t fret! Signature Beethoven accents and sforzandos (sudden loud sounds) are used frequently in this first symphony which begins to set his compositional style for years to come. The second movement begins quietly with the second violins bringing out a stately and majestic theme which then gets echoed in other sections of the orchestra. The third movement is a typical minuet and trio, which is a dance and a middle section that contrasts before returning to the minuet. However, at the speed of this movement faster than one would expect from a typical minuet, we are already able to get a glimpse into Beethoven’s future compositions where he sets the norm for third movement symphonies to take the shape of a Scherzo and Trio (a fast, lively, almost joke-like movement). The last movement is also atypical in that it begins slowly, rather than jumping right into a finale-frenzy tempo that many of later symphonies. It begins with a slow scale that keeps climbing up with more notes but not quite making it to the top. When it does, it launches the symphony finale to start with a theme taken directly from Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 88 in G Major. This gradual building of the scale then becomes a motif that Beethoven uses throughout the rest of this finale movement.

SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA Jeff Edmons, Music Director
Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 2 in C minor, Op. 17 The little-known Second Symphony is nicknamed by the music critic, Nicholas Kashkin, as the “Little Russian”. It does not describe the scope or the size of the work, but refers to the composer’s inclusion of several folk melodies from the modern-day Ukraine region. At the time, that region was called “Little Russia”. The Second Symphony was composed in 1872 and was revised seven years later, which became the standard version which is performed today. The work was composed during the composer’s vacation in Ukraine while visiting his sister Aleksandra and the Davidov family. The love for the Davidov estate inspired the composer so much that he included local folk songs. Tchaikovsky wrote down these tunes in his sketchbook after hearing peasants sing them while incorporating them in his composition.
The first movement begins with a long French Horn based on the Ukrainian folksong “Down by Mother Volga”, describing the longest river in Europe which flows through central Russia. The second movement, titled “Andantino marziale, quasi moderato” was originally from the wedding march of his opera “Undine”, which the composer destroyed before its production. The third movement is a fast, propelling Scherzo entitled “Allegro molto e vivace” which means very fast and lively. The fourth movement, with its unusual harmonic progressions and folklore melodies, ends the piece with an exuberant orchestral display.
