SEA ANGLING NEWS EU MINISTERS TO ALLOW BASS ANGLING TO CONTINUE AS FURTHER THE UK’S ONLY FREE SEA ANGLING NEWSPAPER

MEASURES ANNOUNCED TO REBUILD THREATENED BASS STOCKS

NEXT ISSUE COPY DEADLINE 15th JAN 2018

Anglers have argued that ministers need to address the prime cause which is commercial overfishing with nets rather than targeting the limited impact on the fishery from angling with hook and line.

After two days of tough negotiations over proposals from the European Commission that could have seen bass angling banned for the first six months of the year EU Fisheries ministers have announced the final measures for 2018. This followed strong representations from the Angling Trust and representations from angling bodies and the tackle trade across Europe, including a 18,000 signature petition, calling for no further restrictions on recreational fishing for bass. The package of measures for 2018 have been produced in response to advice from the International Council for the Exploration of the Seas (ICES) which shows that the Northern European bass stock is crashing. It was nearly 19,000 tonnes in 2010, but the forecast for 2018 is just 6,414 tonnes, a fall of two thirds. The stock is now well below the critical level of 8,075 tonnes (Blim), which means the future regeneration of the stock is now critically endangered and the stock may remain depleted for extended periods.

Ministers announced this morning that catch and release angling for bass all year round can continue with the prospect of a recreational bag limit in the second half of 2018 depending on a data review of the updated ICES advice in March. (This was specifically pushed for by the UK delegation in response to our representations). There will be further limits on commercial bass fishing as follows: Fixed nets: 1.2t provision over 10 months (Feb-March closed). – reduction of approx. 50 per cent on 2017 BUT now a provision rather than by-catch. Therefore likely to be more enforceable as the by catch allowance was being widely abused. Demersal trawls and seines: Bycatch down to 1 per cent of catch capped at 100kg for trawls and 180kg for seines per month over 12 months. – reduction from 5 per cent and reduction of cap on 2017 Commercial Hooks & Lines: 5t per vessel per year over 10 months (FebMarch closed) – reduction of 50 per cent on 2017. The Angling Trust is pleased that commercial

over fishing of bass numbers continues to be addressed but obviously disappointed with the extra restrictions on bass angling. However, overall the settlement looks like about the best we were going to get in the context of the ICES stock assessment of bass numbers. David Mitchell, Head of Marine at the Angling Trust, said: “We are pleased that the proposed six month ban recreational fishing for bass was rejected and members of the public will be able to continue to fish for bass in 2018 on a catch & release basis all year round. Charter skippers, bass angling guides and other businesses reliant on bass angling at least now have some certainty and can plan ahead for 2018. "The UK government confirmed that the measures for recreational fishing will be reviewed in March when updated scientific advice will be issued which will take into account the impact of the restrictions on recreational fishing since 2015. We hope at this point that the impact of recreational fishing will have been reduced and there may be the leeway for a bag limit to be introduced in the second half of 2018.”

THAMES ESTUARY

THAMES ESTUARY REPORT by Lee Bollingbroke

Absolutely loads of fish in the Thames estuary at this time unfortunately not always the fish our anglers want to catch with lots of whiting which are actually detrimental in catching other sort after species, as soon as the bait hits the bottom you have a whiting on some good size fish though. Dabs have tuned up in increasing numbers I personally love catching flatties great to eat great to catch with some good sizes among them too you need the smaller tides for this fish and of course you will not catch them on cod rigs a small hook with lug or thin strips of squid or fish. As I write this report I have been told over the grape vine of some big cod offshore up to twenty pounds and as soon as the tides have

dropped a bit we will be off to check this out in the meantime with regards codling it has been better than last year my best day so far has been eight codling in one day still not great but it is what it is. So summing up plenty of fish to catch still a few rays but not in the silly quantities of last year a codling or two if you’re lucky and dabs on the smaller tides but your rod tips will be rattling for sure.

PLYMOUTH CLUB SCENE By Scott Smy

Well I have no idea where this last year has gone – can’t believe its’ the last report of 2017 already! I have to say that it appears to have been a year of quality rather than quantity with some outstanding captures amongst many blank sessions for a lot of the anglers I’ve spoken to you during the year. The clear stand-out capture for me has to be Rob Wheaton’s new British Record shorecaught Gilthead Bream of 12-3. An absolute outstanding fish and I had the great honour of taking a few pictures of the fish for Rob. Well done mate – richly deserved. More success for the Rodbenders SAC Club was in the form of Andy Webb’s massive shorecaught Turbot of 11-6 which resulted in Andy taking the coveted Specimen Hunter Trophy in the Club. Finally and by no means least is Mark Hayman’s Pollack of 12-6 from the shore which topped-off a cracking year for Mark. Well done to all. With a drop in the temperatures the Kingsbridge Estuary has come alive with plenty of Flounders being caught although its’ very much a case of being in the ‘right place at the right time’ as I have found to my cost having spent 3 out of 4 days up there this week for just a few fish to 1-15. By comparison my clubmate Steve King has been finding plenty of Flounder (22 fish in 3 sessions) up to a maximum weight of 2-4. It does seem to be the case that most of the fish being caught are around the 2lb size – hopefully we’ll start seeing some larger speci’s over the Xmas period. Fishing the Tackett Wood area of the estuary,

members of Castaways SAC found some nice fish during the recent Plymouth Angling Xmas Flounder Comp. In amongst the 2lb’ers Ben Jones managed to find a cracker of 2-11 which was big enough to win him first prize in the comp in what were awful weather conditions. At the moment Frogmore and Tackett seem to be the most consistent places in terms of finding any number of fish, with lugworm (as well as the usual king rag/harbour rag) giving you the best chance of finding a few fish. From what I am hearing (which is very little) the Tamar continues to struggle in terms of producing decent fish from the shore (particularly Cod). I have heard some random reports of a few eels and large pouting being caught (Paul Gordon of Castaways SAC found a cracker of 2-11) but on the whole its’ looking like its’ panning-out to be a disappointing season on the Cod. A better bet for Cod would be a trip up to the Bristol Channel shore line. During the recent lull in the stormy weather, several Plymouth anglers enjoyed a very productive day out on Bite Adventures from Penzance. Targeting the excellent mixedground fishing on offer Stewart Gray of Castaways landed a new PB and Club Record SE Ray of 15-2. Fishing out on a charter out of Minehead Adrian Kruger found a nice Cod of 14-4 which was well deserved after snapping his beloved TDX on his last trip and stabbing himself with a filleting knife on this one! Well all that’s left to say is thanks for reading my reports this year, have a cracking Xmas and Happy Dipping for 2018!

NWASAC Final round of NWASAC Summer League 2017, Sun 15.10.17, Town Hall and Maddock Banks, Wallasey (32 rods). The fifth and final round of this year’s league was fished at the two low water Mersey Estuary banks either side of the promontory known as the Beehive.

with 110 points. GENERAL Fishing from the beach has proved hard this month ! with the principle species being whiting. Were still hoping for a late run of codling and then some dabs and flounders in the early part of the new year!! The boats are still hoping for the cod to more inshore but the weather has been against it so far !!

POOLE REPORT by Philip Higgins Turbot are dominating the catches for charter boats with some cracking fish being landed Gary Dennis fishing on board Piscary caught a fish of a lifetime when he landed a 22lb Turbot, Gannets AC club members also found Turbot with fish of 11lb 4 ozs and 10lb 3 ozs coming within a couple of minutes of each other whilst sheltering from the weather close to shore, Allan Johanson caught a new PB when a Turbot of 14lb 10ozs took his whiting bait and Steve Brewer found a couple of nice Brill to 4lb. There have been some very good Spurdogs to 18lb and Smoothhounds to 12lb being caught whilst fishing for those illusive Cod, this is for me the worst year for Cod since I started fishing many many years ago and I have yet to land one this winter. The 1st Poole Sea Angling Centre sponsored Cod comp fished in perfect conditions produced plenty of fish and 1 Cod, the 2nd comp fished in more challenging conditions produced plenty of fish but sadly not a Cod was weighed in. A big thank you to Andy Robins for sponsoring both events. This season has already seen some splendid Whiting fishing with the average fish being between 2 to 3lb and the best onboard at 4lb

5ozs. During a local club fishing comp Albion SAC landed some very good Channel Whiting to 4lb and a bonus Tub Gurnard of 3lb 12ozs. During the winter big Bass always put in an appearance and this season is no exception with several ‘doubles’ already landed up to 15lb. On some days Congers often dominate the fishing with tiny straps up to 60lb coming aboard all day but they do give you a good fight and keep you warm. Flounders fishing has not been as good as one would expect possibly due to lack of cold weather and more seals being released into the Harbour, having spoken to boat and shore anglers the story is the same no matter where you fish. As we enter January traditionally the lower reaches of the harbour tend to fish better specially those shallow water marks off Sandbanks, further out to sea the offshore banks will start to produce Spurs, Rays, Tope and Congers. I hope you all had relaxing time over the Christmas period and are looking forward to the New Year with plenty of fishing. Philip Higgins Mistress Linda Charters

POOLE

SILVER SPRAY REPORT By Sam Cumming

It’s certainly not been a record breaker this year for cod but other species are more than making up for their absence. It’s nice to see quite a few bass coming to the net both on the drift and at anchor, they will be our main target again when we head out tomorrow. Last time out on a big spring tide we struggled to find any suitable sized pout for bait, not usually something we moan about when fishing at anchor. Anglers like Big Rick don’t let that get in their way however as he used a whole whiting on a float to catch 2 decent bass on consecutive drifts. The whiting fishing has continued along the same level as last year, many sessions seeing plenty of double hook ups. Sizes have been ranging from some being returned for future trips all

the way up to nearly 4lb. January is usually our best time for them so fingers crossed they keep getting bigger. It won’t be long and we shall be heading out for our first trip of the season to the offshore banks to target blonde rays and spur dogs. We are planning on running trips from 27th-30th of this month so if you fancy a bit of fresh air in between the bad tv programmes and your next mince pie then give us a ring on 07787 375386. Thanks to everyone who fished with us throughout 2017 and made it such an enjoyable year. From all of us at Silver Spray Charters have a merry Christmas and a happy New Year. LANGSTONE HARBOUR AREA BOAT FISHING REPORT By Neville Merritt, Southsea Marina Angling Club Well what a dismal few weeks we have had! The wind has kept most boats off the water for a number of weekends since the last report. Those that did get out in gaps in the weather found mainly dogfish, whiting and conger. After a promising appearance in late October and early November, the cod have gone into hiding. The conger that are roaming the usual marks can be quite a nuisance, or exciting, depending on your point of view. Their behaviour changes significantly in the autumn, and instead of hiding in wrecks and rocks as they do in summer, they are now roaming in daylight, attacking large baits with gusto. They are even biting hooked fish on the way to the surface. If you want action they will give you that – picking up a bait and running with it like a tope. If you want cod, then an expensive cuttlefish bait being snaffled by a conger within minutes is beyond annoying. So instead of recent catch reports, we thought we would look back at some of the activity in the area this year. The Southsea Marina Angling Club (SMAC) runs monthly and seasonal competitions, and raises money and donations for local rescue charities. We support the independent Gosport and Fareham Inshore Rescue Services (GAFIRS) and the RNLI which has a base on our doorstep. We had a visit from the local crew at a club meeting to receive their donation – see photo. We would certainly feel safe in their hands! Specimen fish recorded through the year by SMAC were Kevin Johnson, Bass 10lb 1oz; Steve Andrews, Bass 11lb 4oz; Tony Harris, Bass 11lb; Kris Scott, Bass 11lb 3oz; Tim Andrews, Pollack 16lb 3oz. In the Catch and Release Specimen Fish category for 2017 were Neil Glazier, Undulate Ray 15lb; Jocky Park, Thornback Ray 15lb; Heber Crawford, Undulate Ray 22lb 4oz; Bill Arnold, Thick Lipped Mullet, 5lb; Jake Kelly (Junior), Undulate Ray 14lb and Martina Houghton, Undulate Ray, 14lb 6oz. Pat

Dorking recorded a John Dory of 3lb – not huge but certainly unusual for this area. We had the very welcome news from Dave Stenson that his wife and fishing partner Caroline has been given the all-clear after a long battle with cancer, and will be back featuring in our catch reports again very soon. She usually out-fishes everyone on the boat. She even went fishing during a gap in her treatment – such resilience. An amazing lady, great to have you back on the water Caroline. If time is short or the weather is uncertain, LRF tactics can be used from boats and structures around the harbours with great success. Admittedly, catches won’t feed a family but if you fancy some sport on much scaled-down tackle, you will find inshore waters teeming with fish and a wrasse of a only a couple of pounds can give you some serious trouble on very light gear.

What bit this whiting in half?

Young Jake Kelly demonstrates LRF skills with a blenny

Due to the weather it is likely that the SMAC Open Cod Competition will be carried over into January, either 7th,14th,21st or 28th, with a 1st prize of £500, 2nd prize of £200, plus a good prize table. There is always the chance that cod will reappear, and then we have next year to look forward to with the spring run of plaice followed by bream, smoothhound and tope. Looking forward to the warmer weather already. Kris Scott with a bass of 11lb 3oz

ILFRACOMBE / NORTH DEVON REPORT

Sea Angling News, January 2018

NORTH DEVON REPORT By Wayne Thomas

Winter has arrived as I write this with wind and rain lashing against the window. The wind is a big factor along the North Devon Coast with Northerly’s bringing biting cold along much of the coast with few places to escape its chill. Southerly winds are generally milder, wetter, offshore or more productive. There is much truth in the old saying that when the wind is in the east fish bite least and when it is in the west fish bite best. The key is to get out and fish when conditions permit, as there are some good fish to be found amongst the bait robbing packs of dogfish.

Whiting and pouting populations seem to have mysteriously dwindled in recent seasons? It is unlikely that this is due to commercial fishing. The flounder season has been a mixed one and will be all but over by the time this goes to print. When river conditions have been favourable good numbers of flounder have been landed with plenty of fish around 1lb 8oz and a few close to the standard specimen size of 2lb. Those prepared to fish outside of the traditional seasons have had some success with grey mullet and bass that seem to hang around some areas throughout the year.

The first spurdog of the winter have been landed from the open coast marks along with a few bull huss and conger. Cod have been scarce though I have heard of a handful of codling from the Lower Taw estuary.

Boat anglers should enjoy top sport with spurdog if the weather permits boats to launch from Ilfracombe and reach deep-water marks in mid channel. Those interested should contact John Barbeary on Bluefin Charters – 07968419897. For up to date news visit: www.northdevonanglingnews.co.uk

FOUR RECORD CLAIMS RATIFIED BY BRITISH RECORD FISH COMMITTEE The British Record (rod-caught) Fish Committee met at The Natural History Museum, London, on 28th November, 2017. Present were: Mike Heylin OBE (Chairman), Nick Simmonds (Secretary), Oliver Crimmen (Scientific Advisor, Natural History Museum), Andrew Nellist (Freshwater Specialist), Paul Coulson (Freshwater Specialist), Nigel Hewlett (Scientific Advisor, Environment Agency) and Chris Clark (Marine Specialist). The Committee inspected Nigel Ludbrook’s claim for the carp record with his capture of the fish known as “Captain Jack” from Holme Fen Fishery at a claimed weight of 68lb 8oz. The claim could not be considered because the original scales tests performed by Norfolk Calibration Services, using weights traceable to National Standards, consistently indicated that the scale used to weigh the fish was overstating the weight by at least eight ounces. This means that the maximum weight which the committee could accept for this fish was below the current record of 68lb 1oz. The committee also considered a submission by Ben Taylor for his shore-caught Gilthead bream, caught from the shore in south Cornwall on 28th August, 2017 and claimed at 10lb 11oz. Further clarification is needed from the captor as to the exact weight claimed before the committee can ratify this capture as an interim record. Four further claims remain to be completed by the captors as completed paperwork was not presented to the committee in time for the meeting. These are: A Connemara Clingfish (Lepadogaster candollei) claimed by Tim Poat at 15.3 grams. A Cornish Sucker (Lepadogaster lepadogaster) claimed by George Stavrakopoulos at 3.9 grams. Paul Aldridge’s Dover Sole (Solea solea) claimed at 4lb 8oz. Chris Buxton’s shore-caught Tope (Galeorhinus galeus), claimed at 72lb 4oz. These claims will be considered for ratification in due course if completed claims are presented. The committee had a discussion about a proposal to

Email: editor@seaanglingnews.com 13

SPECIES LEAGUE

introduce specific criteria for future claims for the British carp record. After much consideration it was agreed that it would be impossible to formulate rigid criteria as each claim has differing elements which must be considered. The committee concluded that it should continue to consider every record claim on its own merits. The committee concluded that it would be helpful to advise potential record claimants, for any freshwater species, as to some of the aspects of any capture which would come under scrutiny in the process of considering a record claim, as follows: The weight of the fish when stocked into the water from which it was caught. The length of time the fish has been in the water of capture since stocking. The origin of the fish and its history prior to stocking. Whether the fish reached the weight claimed feeding on natural food and anglers’ baits only, without supplementary feeding or other treatments. Evidence of the growth rate of the fish. Consideration of whether the fish would be able to naturally sustain its weight in the fishery concerned. The BRFC does not wish to encourage any attempts to introduce record-size fish via imports, or attempts to manipulate records by producing record-size fish through the use of deliberate fishery management practices. The committee has faced import and aquaculture issues in the past and ceased records for Wels catfish and for cultivated game fish as a result. The committee discussed the possibility of reinstating the record listing for Wels catfish, which was suspended in 2007. The catfish record listing was closed to future claims because, at the time, large catfish were being imported illegally from Europe with the deliberate intention of increasing the record weight. This undermined the legitimacy of the record and was providing a key pressure for the illegal importation of Wels catfish. Communications with Cefas and the Environment Agency suggest that the suspension of the record may be contributing to a reduction in import activity. The Wels catfish record listing will therefore remain closed.

Unfortunately, our final match of the year was cancelled due to strong winds off Weymouth, part of the tapestry of sea boat fishing in the UK. So the standings from the November trip remain unchanged. This means that Vernon Allen is our Species League Champion scoring an impressive 634.72% with his best 7 scores from the 10 events over the year. Richard Ferre was within a whisker and lost by only 0.06% which is just crazy and Steve Batchelor third with 617.67% Yours truly Ray Evans wins the Species League tankard for the most species with 29 across the year and overall we caught 41 species between us which is a new Species League annual record.

with a chance of any of these you need to have fished at least 6 matches throughout the year. Each prize is awarded to the best scores/ percentages of the combined matches in each area. So here are all the trophy winners for 2017 :Vernon Allen - Species League Championship Trophy Ray Evans - Most Species Tankard Vernon Allen – Weymouth Fish Darren Phillips – Poole Challenge

We also had 3 new species this year with Stephan Baker catching a red bream in one of the entrances to Portland Harbour, Luke Allen a cuckoo ray from Minehead and Kim Bowden the first of 5 guilt head bream from Poole Harbour.

Bill Cann – Bristol Channel Open

We also have new trophy winners for various ports/areas where we regularly fish. To be in

Prize giving will now take place on 23 February after the first match in Weymouth in 2018

Steve Batchelor – Lyme Bay Cup Ricard Ferre – Hampshire Rose

NWASAC Tim Cotterill – Thin-lipped Grey Mullet (Liza ramada) Shore-caught, east coast of Guernsey, on 1st September, 2017.

Chris Davey – Garfish (Belone belone) Shore-caught, Slapton Sands, Devon, on 22nd April, 2017.

The weight of Tim’s fish was ratified at 8lb 1oz 7dr, surpassing Mr Mabelson’s 7lb fish from Oulton Broad in 1991.

Chris’s fish was ratified at a weight of 3lb 9oz 8dr, overtaking Mr Williams’ 22 year-old record of 3lb 4oz 12dr and equalling the current boat-caught record.

Geoff LePage – Thin-lipped Grey Mullet (Liza ramada) Shore-caught, Havelet Bay, St Peter Port, Guernsey, on 4th September, 2017 Tim’s record was short-lived as the next claim to be ratified was Geoff's Thin-lipped Grey Mullet of 8lb 3oz 8dr, caught just three days later.

Robert Wheaton – Gilthead Bream (Sparus auratus) Shore-caught, Kingsbridge Estuary, Devon, on 5th October, 2017. Rob’s fabulous fish was ratified at a weight of 12lb 2oz, beating Ryan Carter’s 2015 fish of 10lb 7oz.

Final round of NWASAC Personal Members Championship 2017, Sun 3rd December, Golden Goose Bank, New Brighton (14 rods). The final round in the 2017 championship, postponed from its original date, November 5th (when a council firework display was staged on this venue at the mouth of the Mersey) saw an unprecedented fifth consecutive match win for reigning champion, John Waugh. He also caught the heaviest roundfish, a codling of 1290 gms and won the Golden Peg jackpot! Fellow Wallasey angler, Mike Flanagan, won Zone B for runner-up place but the Mersey Master, John Waugh, is NWASAC Personal Members Champion once more. Who can beat him? The low water bank, named after a long defunct amusement arcade, produced whiting, dabs, codling, rockling, pouting and flounders. Results (scored in continental style from 2 zones): 1. John Waugh (Wallasey) Zone A, 8 whiting, 5 codling, 2 dabs, 1 flounder, 379 pts.. 2. Mike Flanagan (Wallasey) Zone B, 19 whiting, 3 codling, 1 dab, 336. 3. Phil Simpson (Pensby), 9 whiting, 2 codling, 1 dab, 230. 4. Carl Edwards (Bootle), 10 whiting, 7 dabs, 1

PETITION FOR ACTION ON PLASTICS IN THE MARINE ENVIRONMENT Please Sign My Petition My name is Patrick and I live in Dorset. I’m getting on a bit but I still go swimming in the sea about 3 times a week, in a wetsuit mind, I’m no thomas hardy! Some people go all year in just a bathing costume and Lewis Pugh, an environmentalist, has swum The North Pole according to English Channel rules, to draw attention to climate warming. A bathing cap, goggles and Speedo’s, nothing more. A kilometre in 20 minutes at minus 1.7c. Watch him on Youtube, you’ll never feel cold again. So what I do is good but not that good. There’s something umbilical about the sea, drawing people in: a sense of closeness, the sound, the colours, the beaches, bird and marine life, living nature. As I swim along I see fish, crabs and different shells, sometimes a lobster and sometimes giant jellyfish. Then I see lost footballs floating away which I sometimes manage to rescue. Then I see the debris: the cans and crisp packets, the glass and the plastic. Boy, so much plastic: bags, bottles, straws, buds, string, containers…so much, every day. The experts say that within a few years, unless we change, there will be more plastic in the sea than marine life! And it’s getting into our food chain; tiny particles appearing in our sea food. From

land to sea and back again, maybe we’re the ones committing suicide? My idea is to get the Government to create a National Awareness Day specifically against plastic in the sea. There is no such Day at the moment and it would be great if Britain were the first. We have great historical and cultural links to the sea, let’s protect it. A Government created Day (or w/e) on which all organisations can focus, increasing the sum of the parts. An annual reminder around which organisations collaborate; for example why not a cordon of sea protection festivals around the coastal counties and working harbours? Family, educational, fun, fish and sea orientated? The seas are in peril and the families of marine life need a nice Xmas present. As anglers you understand and with social media we can do it, people sharing and forwarding. There are Facebook, Twitter, Email and Whatsapp links on the Government petition page and you could also photo this article and forward? Will you help? Also if you have any thoughts or suggestions please email me phowie2014@hotmail.com Let’s do it for the fish.

EFSA WALES COD CHAMPIONSHIP 2017 November, 11th & 12th saw the Annual Welsh Cod (boat) Championships fished out of Birkenhead in the River Mersey, for the 14th year running. 14 anglers from the Welsh, English and Scottish sections of the European Federation of Sea Anglers (EFSA), not the biggest turnout compared with the previous 13 years, competed and though the number of Cod caught was well down on previous years they were a good bit larger. Only 10 Cod in all were measured and released during the only day (Saturday) that we could get out, an average of less than 1 cod per angler with no small ones. The biggest was 65 cms in length and fell to Billy Murray, a Scottish International angler and member of EFSA Scotland. The weather that greeted us on the second day (Sunday) as we awoke was appalling there being lashing rain and winds gusting at over 60 mph so the lead skipper was forced to call it off, this meant an early presentation and home on the Sunday instead of the Monday for only the second time in 14 years, the last being 2012. Global warming anyone? The winner, thus taking the coveted Gold Pin, from EFSA Wales and another International Boat angler, but this time from Wales, was Tina Lustig (Pictured) who managed to winkle out 3 fish for 163 points aboard Wave Dancer. Second, taking the Silver Pin, with 2 fish for 135 points was another EFSA Wales

International angler, Haydn Cole by 30 cm from EFSA England International Barrie Senior who also had 2 Cod but for 105 points, giving him the bronze pin. Top boat was Girl Gray with 6 fish for 370 points from Wave dancer with 4 fish for 227 points. Our thanks go to Phil Lustig for organising the competition, Haydn Cole for helping with the bait, the Premier Inn, Bromborough, for their usual hospitality and the Skippers, Steve Dalton (Girl Gray) and Chris Birmingham (Wave Dancer) for finding the fish. We look forward to more fish next year and hopefully better weather.

As I sit here 5 days before xmas the temperatures are rising up to a balmy 11 degrees and hopefully the winds are going to be more favourable in the new year. It has been a real struggle to get afloat for the last few months making it hard to find any pattern to the fishing. The thornbacks have been consistent, doggies at times a pest and congers increasing but the cod and whiting have been sporadic in the bay. The smouthound fishing this year was excellent with some real donkeys landed and hopefully next year will be even better. We had a fair number of bass in the spring up to 7lb which were all returned for us to catch again next year when bigger (and return them again!!!!). Unfortunately our xmas comp on 13th was cancelled due to a poor forecast but undeterred Ultra White took a chance and steamed down to Watchet. Plenty of fish for the crew but no sizeable cod were landed though they were kept busy with dogs, thornies, conger and a spotted ray.

Vicoue sneaked out on 19th for a rare mid week trip and although it was a slow day overall Terry Garrett found a cod of 6lb 9oz. That has been the sum total of activity since the last report but hopefully over the festive period there will be a few more opportunities to get afloat. Fish of the month for November sponsored by Thyers Tackle of Highbridge was a lsd of 2lb 11oz and 90% for Aaron Devey. The next club competition will be a final attempt at our Thornback Trophy having been cancelled at least twice this year on Thursday 28th December. The first comp for 2018 is the Presidents cup on Sunday 14th January Our next club meeting is on Thursday 18th January at Burnham Motor Boat and Sailing Club on the sea front, pop along if you are interested in joining a friendly club. COUNCIL TARGETS ANGLERS

RECENT CATCHES ABOARD SEAFIRE II

Sam with a nice cod - Seafire II

Minehead Harbour On Wednesday 13th September the West Somerset Harbour Board made a request to the full council of the West Somerset Council that charges be introduced to fish the harbour walls at both Minehead and Watchet in Somerset. The reason for the request was “…for the provision of a safe position to fish from the harbour walls in Minehead and Watchet, by purchasing a permit users will agree to the rules which will limit the negative impact and unsafe practice that can occasionally be identified.” It was revealed to Sea Angling News that in the past two years there have been TWO, yes, a whole TWO, recorded incidents and that these were dealt with at the time. The angling charges they proposed were £10 per week, £20 per month or £50 per year. There were other charges proposed as well and these included non-standard use of the harbour at £100 for charities and community groups. It was projected that all of these fees and an increase of existing fees would generate in the region £3,000 income per year. The Council were unable to say how these fees would be collected, by who and what powers the collector would have to demand payment. The West Somerset coast lies on the Bristol Channel, which is notorious for the rise and fall of its tides. The area is an identified area of poverty and is bottom in the whole country on the lists for annual earnings (£16k per year) and social mobility. One of it’s main industries is the tourism trade and many anglers will base their holidays in the area around the ability to fish safely from the coastline. There are only three safe, top of the tide, fishing areas along the West Somerset coastline for disabled, elderly and young anglers. These

are the Minehead and Watchet harbour walls and the Blue Anchor sea front and the Council propose to introduce charges for two of them. Generations of young anglers have learnt to fish and to start a life-long fishing passion from these harbour walls and yet it is these people that the council are targeting in these times of austerity. The proposals went through the lawful process of scrutiny and were a matter of public record as they were recorded in the council’s minutes, which could be viewed on-line. There was little or no consultation with local groups and the Harbour Boards proposal being made to the full council for approval only really came to light just three days before the meeting. This gave a small opportunity for those likely to be affected by these charges to mount a defence against them. An on-line petition was started and several people registered to speak, in 3 minute slots, to the meeting. The speakers, amongst others, included charter boat skipper Steve Pilbrow and 2 local councillors and they were able to put across a very strong argument against the charges. This, as well as other factors that came into play, led the council to vote 11-9 in favour of deferring the proposal for 12 months. This was a small victory in what could be a long battle. With many Councils in the country struggling for funding, the Sea Angling News wonders how long it will be before other Councils start to consider similar charges for their harbours. Some may already have started the process. DO YOU KNOW IF YOUR LOCAL COUNCIL HAVE??? Is West Somerset’s case just the thin edge of the wedge? Only time will tell.

MINEHEAD

Sea Angling News, January 2018

BOAT REPORT by Dave Roberts

Yet again, Minehead charter boats returning some cracking catches. All inshore marks producing mixed bags. The herring and sprat invasion is attracting all sorts of species with conger, huss and spurdogs making the most of the harvest. Whiting have been amazing with many specimens over three pounds reported. Offshore grounds as usual are best for the spurs with fish baits proving deadly, especially herring topped with a squid strip. Bass tides have been mixed as usual though for the ardent angler, some cracking fish have been available. With the one fish rule however, many anglers have chosen not to bother, and fish for what is available. With the no take rule promised for

the new year it makes me think we are wasting our time with this species, it's just not worth the risk as no doubt, the small boys will be the ones to target! Why not just let the foreign flag commercials take the lot and have done with it!! On a lighter note, the cod are in!! Several good fish well into double figures showing but not in great numbers as yet, but there is still time! Christmas and the new year historically is a great time to target the lunkers, so if its a 30 pounder you'r looking for, give us a call and I'm sure you will find a place on a Minehead boat. Don't forget, if you're cancelled due to weather on the South coast, we can often get out!

BRISTOL CHANNEL

BRISTOL CHANNEL SHORE REPORT By Craig Butler of West Coast Tackle

The cod fishing over the past month has been steady with a modest amount of codling being reported throughout the channel. But without doubt ,the star of the show was Devon Angler Nick Gale with a fantastic condition cod of 19lb 8oz caught from a west Somerset mark. In general the Watchet area has been fishing extremely well for codling with some half tidy bags of codling reported. While on one of my shore guiding sessions we managed 4 codling put o 4lb in horrific wet and windy conditions. This could of easily been doubled in better conditions. A few days later in the same area West Coast & Watchet Angler Matt Werbitzky (aka Biscuit ) bagged 5 all around the 3lb mark in a short and sweet session. The next day fishing a different mark close by he bagged a plump 6lb6oz cod. Biscuit also bagged a lovely 10lb2oz cod from Minehead gas works beach at the beginning of the month, so by all accounts he’s having a ball of the cod this year. There are a good mix up of sized codling ranging from 1lb to 4lb with a splattering of 6-9lbers and the odd double around. If anglers can maintain the enthusiasm through January and February we can expect see some good cod fishing going on. Who’s going to be the lucky Angler with the 20lber this winter ? Most years we see one or two and there’s no

reason why it won’t happen to someone again this winter. This month I have the urge to only talk codling and cod but that would be foolish as the general fishing has and is on the main been excellent. If big whiting tick your boxes then now is the time to give them some attention. The deeper marks like Porlock, Bossington, Minehead gas works and Watchet breakwater offer a reasonable depth. Best fished after dark and using a good chunk of mackerel should do the trick. Spurdogs have been making an appearance from marks west of Minehead with the odd one at Minehead . There have been a few reasonably catches of 4-5 spurs in a session. Steve Liddle bagged a few one evening and George Stavrakopoulos bagged one from the gas works at Minehead one morning.

Historic Harbour-side Venue ●Newly refurbished iconic pub and hotel with its fantastic Minehead harbour-side setting. ●Fine ales & river cottage style food & traditional hospitality at its best. ●Fishing parties welcome.

Anyway I’m going to cut it short this month to free up some space for cod photos. Happy new year to you all. I hope all of you that enjoy what the channel has to offer can keep up your enthusiasm over the coming weeks and get stuck into some rod bending action.

Compared to previous years, this is probably one of the poorest Cod seasons on record. Fishing for Cod, has been very disappointing, never the less,it is still worth drowning a box of squid, giving it your best shot,as it is the time of year to catch a lunker, a Cod 30 – 40lb. Whiting are being caught in good numbers with some quality specimens amongst them, this

should continue right through January, they are well worth fishing for! Congers continue to dominate a lot of the marks, the next few weeks should see them moving back to deeper water. Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year John skeggs (Last Laugh / Lymington)

WEST WIGHT REPORT By Arthur Savage This years Cod season has never really got started, the weeks turned into months and we are still waiting for it to kick off, There has been a few fish in the twenty pound mark and one I know of at thirty one pounds, but not the stream of double figure fish that we have come to expect over the past years This down turn in cod seems to have rolled on from the middle of the year when it all started to switch off a little even on the wrecks. and there are many thoughts as to why. The other winter fish are in the area with

channel Whiting Rays Conger and the occasional Pollock etc over the open ground. (Some of the anglers I take from Southampton are still catching the occasional Mackerel off the dock wall) That's how confusing / exciting fishing can be. WEYMOUTH

Port Report I have to say I don’t envy my skipper colleague sand angling friends back home in Weymouth when I see the forecasts and particularly the temperatures. Wow….chilly!!!! However, from the reports coming to me from many different sources (thank you to everyone for contributing) there has been some very good fishing on the calm days. Firstly, the wrecking is producing a good run of pollack with that stalwart angler from Telford, John Bloomer, with a very good specimen of 18lb. John has supported the Weymouth charter scene for at least 30 years and it’s great to see him still fishing regularly. Several of the boats have made it out to the wrecks during the first half of December reporting lively pollack sessions which is welcome news after the quiet April to October time we’ve experienced. Inshore fishing continues to be very good with various rays, some very nice brill, an occasional turbot, strap conger, stacks of whiting and even a few bream which is very late in the year for them. And, with so many shark around it’s great to see Ryan Casey reporting the 21st porbeagle to be released at the side of Meercat in the first week of December. The inshore fishing marks from where these catches are coming from are very scattered and that is good news with fish coming from the reefs and banks to the west of Portland and to the south of The Shambles Bank and from the east of Weymouth. December’s Xmas period 27th to 31st December looks busy on the Weymouth charter boats so fingers crossed for some kind weather to let these trips take place. January’s fishing was traditionally all about the pollack out on the wrecks so, with the good showing that there has been fishing should be good. Inshore the whiting will be the main quarry but with appropriate tackle and big baits aimed at cod there is no reason why the bigger fish can’t be enticed such as the 25lb specimen cod that came aboard Clem Carter’s Wild Frontier in early December. In amongst the whiting will be pout and dogfish but also more rays and wandering conger. Trips targeting the blonde rays on the west side banks are also very likely to see turbot and brill taking the ray baits. A lot of effort is going into 2018 by the Weymouth skippers. Young Luke Pettis has been showing photo’s on his Facebook page of his new wheelhouse which has arrived and will be fitted to Snapper. This is not an easy job as the ‘old’ wheelhouse needs o be removed and all the electronics etc re-routed but, when completed, this will give Luke’s customers much more shelter and comfort. Also, his new engines have been delivered. This is a massive investment as engines and gearboxes are very expensive....so all credit to him for investing in his own future.

Anglers will know that Jamie Pullin is now the enthusiastic and very experienced skipper of Offshore Rebel which is a great step forward for the port. It’s great to see the young skippers taking on various roles within the local chartering community with Jamie acting as the local Skippers’ Association social secretary and organising functions for the others to attend. Weymouth has long been known for the camaraderie amongst its skippers and this we all believe is important for visiting customers to see. We want everyone coming to Weymouth to know that the skippers here work together to locate the fish for you.

Luke (Snapper) has taken up the challenge of organising and co-ordinating three competitions for 2018 which will be based on Pollack, Bream and Turbot and Brill with the biggest 3 of each species taking a cash price each day. The costs of the day will be your chosen boats standard rate plus a £10 entry fee. All the money paid will be paid back out in prizes. The rules are as follows will be kept very simple and announced on the relevant web and Facebook pages. The participating boats signed up for these three events are Atlanta, Al’s Spirit, Supanova, Snapper, Offshore Rebel, Gypsy 2, Sally Ann Jo, Flamer and Amarisa. The competition dates are pollack on 30th March, turbot/brill on 27th of July and finally bream on the 25th of October and these will all be based around the biggest/ best specimen of each species making it possible for anyone to win. The Deepsea website now has a section dedicated to promoting Sea Angling competitions. This section is open to all charter boats in each and every port. If any skippers ‘out there’ would like their events listed, get in touch by contacting the Webmaster. The hyperlink to take you to the new competition section is : http://www.deepsea.co.uk/competitions/ weymouth-competitions/ The Biggest Fish competition which ran all year as organised by Weymouth Angling Society showed promise but next year it is hoped many more anglers will take part. The skippers on whatever boat you go on will have the entry forms…please ask and get yourself involved. It’s all part of the fun and a one off £5 payment will last all year with lots of prizes and cash to win. I am sure many of you are very aware that sea angling is ‘evolving’ because of all that has happened over the past few years and we have to adapt to get the best from our sport whatever direction we are being taken in.

WEST SUSSEX

WEST SUSSEX REPORT By Paul Robinson The Sussex area has been a bit quiet of late ... Plenty of whiting if nothing else... BRIGHTON MARINA AND BEACHES When the water was clear there were plenty of squid being caught to the jigs. The odd FLOUNDER and sole when the whiting leave your bait alone for long enough for them to grab it. Seems to be a few herring showing on the MARINA and a few plaice when the conditions allow. SHOREHAM HARBOUR ARMS AND BEACHES The harbour walls have been producing plenty of whiting both channel and pout.. When the weather permits the odd FLOUNDER and plaice. Shoreham beach after the last big blow produced some nice strap and proper congers to 30lb. Best bait being whole squid for the congers.

WORTHING PIER AND SURROUNDING BEACHES Once again the pier produced some nice fish of late with Congers to 43lb and the odd undulate ray. Congratulations to Sarah Croft for catching the 2nd biggest shore cought Conger from a Sussex venue as far as records show! Plenty of whiting and dogfish being caught on the pier and surrounding BEACHES along with a few big boat pout. The beaches towards Selsey area have been very quiet with probably the odd bass in close and plenty of whiting plus a sprinkling of dogfish. All in all a very good year with some great fish caught. Would like to thank all those that have taken time to share there catches and venues with me, these reports are nothing without your help!! Have a wonderful Xmas and New Year and I'll see you in January. RIVER ADUR FLOUNDER MATCH RESULTS.... 1st Sean Lacey 4 flounders for 124 points £60 2nd Rob Moore 5 flounders for 117 points £50 3rd Tom Ryder 5 flounders for 101 points £40 4th D Wilson 4 flounders for 89 points £30 Longest flounder Sean Lacey 35cm £20 Thanks to everyone who made the effort especially all the boys from Pompey area £200 paid in and £200 paid out... FIPS-M Ladies & Men's World Shore Championships - South Africa

JUNIOR CORNISH ANGLER STEPS UP TO THE PLATE

The FIPS-M Ladies & Men’s World Shore Championships took place from 4th – 11th November 2017 in Langebaan, South Africa in a very professional well organised event. These championships were met with eager anticipation by every team with hopes of big catches of hard fighting guitar fish or sand sharks as they are known locally, although the teams simply called them geetars!

Little Layton Juleff from Padstow, Cornwall is becoming a bit of a legend in his own lifetime. Aged just 5yrs and 2 months he had his first fishing rod for his 4th Birthday in October last year.

Tronixpro England Ladies team and results The Tronixpro England Ladies team led by Mark Hurcombe consisted of Heather Lindfield, Rebecca Adams, Nicola Frewin, Kimberley Lawn, Rachael Jarman and with Adele Smith supporting the team as reserve. The ladies performed incredibly well over the course of the competition finishing in fourth place and narrowly missing out on a podium finish. The first day of the competition saw plenty of action for the ladies but the bigger fish eluded the team and they ended day one in 9th place. Buoyed by their catch rate on day one, the ladies headed into day two with high expectations and a scintillating performance was rewarded with a 1st place, a result which catapulted them up the leader board. At the beginning of day three, confidence was oozing from the team on the back of their day two performance and result and a solid 5th place result maintained their position on the leader board and ensured they headed into the final competition day within touching distance of a medal. England entered the fourth and final day knowing a good result could see them with a medal, however they needed other nations to falter. England kept up their end of the bargain with a 2nd place finish, but it wasn’t enough to displace the Netherlands from the bronze position and the ladies secured 4th place behind the Netherlands, Croatia and the victorious Portuguese team. Overall a fantastic performance by England’s ladies and they will be hoping to go one better in 2018 when the World Championships head to Wales. Mark Hurcombe, Tronixpro England Ladies Manager stated “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the ladies for all their hard work and support they had for each other in the World Championships. The ladies did themselves very proud and as their manager I am extremely proud of them all and what they have achieved. Thanks and appreciation to George Cunningham at Tronixpro for his continued support and sponsorship of the team and for the support we received from our partners at Enable Promotional Marketing and finally thanks to Cox & Rawle for their support in supplying product for the championship.” Top 5 team results 1st Portugal 2nd Croatia 3rd Netherlands 4th England 5th Spain Top 5 individual results 1st PINA Andrea - Spain 2nd RADIL Tea - Croatia 3rd KOMOTO Alice H H - Brazil 4th SEROMENHO Natasha - Portugal 5th VERHAGE Christel - Netherlands Tronixpro England Men’s team & results 20 nations entered the 34th FIPS-M World Shore Angling Championships making it the biggest championship to date. Tronixpro England Men’s team consisted of; Saul Page, Richard Yates, Darren Newland, Gareth Griffiths, Kenny McCoy and Ian Golds (manager) who were strong contenders going into the World Championships to make for a competitive event so far. The team were backed up by very willing beach runners and supporters in Bill Lindfield and Ian Golds. Practice had shown fish ranging from a few ounces to 10lb playing around in the waves and catches of 50 to 60 fish in less than two hours were recorded. Target species included eagle, spear nosed, thorn tail and blue rays, plus the odd catfish, gurnard or small smooth hound and oddly named St

Joseph fish. Bait for the championships would be 10 mullet, 1kg of sardines and a large squid, so these were the only baits used in practice week. Weed was a problem and spread in patches along the beach. Some pegs had loads of these thick stalked, sea dwelling min trees, while other pegs were pretty relatively free. The venue for the week would be at Velddrif, a 10km stretch of sprawling white sand and bashed up mussel shells which would be split into three areas of about 3km each. Fishing would be the first 3km on day one, middle 3km on day 2, with the far end on day 3. Day 4 would be back to the first day’s venue. Day one saw the first half of the match throw up a steady stream of fish and for some reason, the fish seemed to be avoiding the England men’s team and half way through they were probably in the bottom three. A gritty, hard fought second half fightback then ensued, with Darren finishing a brilliant first, Gareth fourth, Richard fifth and Saul and Kenny eighth meant that the team had snatched an amazing third place. The first hour of the match on day two saw some unbelievable catches, but only from the middle pegs in A to the first seven or eight pegs in C, where it was wall to wall fish all of the way through with bags up to 40 fish in this rather hectic sixty minute opening period. Two hours in and it wasn’t looking good as England men’s languished near the bottom of four zones, but as in the first match the fightback began in the second half. The team ended the day in 11th place which was an excellent result from some pretty hard peg draws. This took the team into seventh place and still in contention. Day three saw the team trying to mirror the first two matches and force their way out of the “relegation zone” and into a more respectable position. With many teams having a very up and down day England scored a very welcome second on the day and had moved up to fifth position and only three points from top spot. Day four was frustrating for over half the field managing one fish or less, which included 25 blanks. England was one of only five teams with all members catching fish, but they could not find any decent fish. Darren was top scorer with a seventh, Richard ninth and Saul 11th. Kenny and Gareth both caught, but, alas, their fish were the smallest in their sections and they finished 14th and 16th. England finished the match in 14th place which put them out of contention in seventh place overall. Ian Golds, Tronixpro England Men’s Manager said “We would like to congratulate winners, and new World Champions Brazil, on an excellent win, Holland on a hard fought silver medal and Belgium finishing with a brilliant bronze. Well done to every team on an extremely hard fought week. Special thanks must go to our hosts, South Africa for making us feel very welcome in this exceptionally large and fish filled country. The fishing very good at times, all in all, despite the last day disappointment, it was still a memorable trip and saw the team working very hard this year. Thanks and appreciation to George Cunningham at Tronixpro who helped greatly with assistance towards participation costs. Asso kindly supplied the team with line and Julian Shambrook of Anyfish Anywhere, who unfortunately had to withdraw a few weeks before we left due to illness kindly helped with rods and also sent them in advance to a local shop in Saldanha where they kept them until we arrived.” Top 5 team results 1st Brazil 2nd Netherlands 3rd Belgium 4th France 5th Germany Top 5 individual results 1st PEENE Frank - Netherlands 2nd BEUCKELS Steven - Belgium 3rd HUTCHINGS Andrew - Wales 4th VERRYCKT Yve - Belgium 5th JERSCH Bernd – Germany

He started to go fishing with his grandad, Padstow Angler Greg Neimes and young Layton has started to become a known name in local Angling circles. In June this year he caught a Bass of 4lb in the tidal waters at Wadebridge. Since then he has become obsessed with the sport and fishes whenever he can. Layton Juleff His dad Mikey Juleff never used to fish but does now as he spends so much time in the Estuary with Layton. Mikey tells me that Layton does all his own baiting up, casting and ties his own knots. His parents downloaded a knots App onto Layton’s tablet and he has learnt from that. Layton also guts and prepares his own fish for the table. Layton buys his bait from the local tackle shop in Padstow but as soon as he’s big enough he wants to dig his own lug and collect peeler crabs. When asked what he wanted for his 5th birthday he told his parents that he wanted an Ugly Stick. They were confused and had to Google Ugly Stick. When asked why he wanted one Layton replied, ‘ Because they’re light and strong’! His grandad is s buying a new boat for 2018 and Layton is already excited and wants to catch a Conger. In the last few days Layton has caught a Bass just under 4lb on Peeler Crab and his first Eel on Black Lugworm.

SLO R12 - Winner

NWASAC John E. Williams Two Day Festival 2017, Sat/Sun 9th & 10th December, Otterspool Promenade (103 rods per day).

With a prize fund of over £5000 and some excellent prizes from sponsors Akios, Inova and Bass Boots, competition was fierce. Snowfalls in the higher reaches of the Mersey river system created a run of melt water, reducing catches somewhat but there were still plenty of fish, mainly whiting and codling, on offer. Saturday’s winner, Richard Gormley, from Kerry, caught a remarkable 26 fish for 763 cms from the downriver Zone D. Amongst the star-studded entry, members of the large Isle of Man contingent were prominent, indeed there was a clean sweep for Manxmen of the top three two day results. While Derek Sharpe was the clear winner with a perfect score of two zone points, the remaining podium places were tied on both zone and fish points. On a count back, Gary Reid took the verdict for runner-up place over fellow Peel A.C.member, Mark Leece, by just one fish. Many thanks are due to organisers Bill and Heather Lindfield (both recently returned from representing England on the beaches of South Africa) and their team, our generous sponsors, Simon Bradbury from Akios Tackle, Martin McGowan from Inova Tackle and Malcolm Scullion of Bass Boots and also the manager and staff at the Otters Pool pub HQ for providing welcome hospitality on a wintry weekend.
