This year’s FIPS-M 27th World Championship for Big Game Trolling took place in Frontignan, South of France from 29th September to 6th October with 14 nations competing to target the giant bluefin tuna and swordfish abound in the area. Team England consisted of; Andy Atkins (manager), Peter Bailey, Jack Challis and Jon Patten. Unfortunately the practice day and first day had to be cancelled due to adverse weather leaving only one and a half days fishing to be enjoyed by participants.

Day One saw an unprecedented number of fish with the English team managing to release 6 bluefin tuna in perfect conditions bringing fish to every angler. Italy and France led the pack with 10 releases each after the first day. Day Two saw a reversal of positions with all those who had done well on day one struggling to find the fish on the second day, with the England team suffering one missed strike and one break off just before the leader. The Slovenian team made up for a slow first day with 6 released tuna and a swordfish coming top on day two. Overall the German B team came out on top with two consistent days fishing, Italy B coming

second and Germany A taking up third place. Andy Atkins, England Manager stated “Great hospitality and hard work by the organisers meant that a superb tournament was enjoyed by all and many new friends made by all participants and support staff. Team England are now looking forward to taking part in the World Games in South Africa in 2019.” Top 4 team results 1st Germany B Team - 650 points 2nd Italy B Team – 650 points 3rd Germany A Team– 550 points 4th Spain A Team – 600 points 14th England 50 points

THAMES ESTUARY

THAMES ESTUAURY

BRIGHTLINGSEA, Essex

Thames Estuary

by Lee Bolingbroke

Autumn is fast approaching and fishing is changing slowly but shorly hounds have all but disappeared bass are moving off now, ironic as the powers that be have just allowed us one fish per angler, how convenient. Some boats are traveling off to catch the migrating shoals of bass with differing results but its a long way to go and more expensive than a general trip and not always successful. Rays are still here in good numbers and they will probably stay here throughout the winter if its not to harsh, whiting have turned up in very good numbers and a smattering of codling being caught both out on the boats and on the piers. Last week we fished sheltered waters in the Blackwater estuary on my boat Sophie Lea as there was a gale blowing, I know some anglers don’t like to compromise there trips in the estuary but it was flat calm in the estuary my party were happy to fish in the estuary and we had a great assortment of fish including rays whiting, tub gurnards, dabs, yes a great day out

Email: editor@seaanglingnews.com 3

every one aboard enjoyed there day and it was certainly better than canceling . Cod ! every angler wants to catch them and last year was disappointing but we have already had a few and I must say in very good condition, boats further east of our port are catching them and the offshore wrecks and banks this year were full of them so I am optomistic that they will turn up but you got to be in it to win it. Our part of the estuary has seen several charter boats retire in the last two or three years Bradwel is down to one boat were there used to be fourteen Brightlingsea only has two charter boats and in its peek had twelve, the Crouch probably has the largest fleet now but mostly part time and a couple of them have sold up West Mersea has five but mostly part time boats so use them or lose them a charter boat is a big investment skippers are not getting rich its more of a life style choice just a thought to end this report.

BRIXHAM REPORT By Kevin Wyatt

Steven carter with a nice 24lb 8oz tope caught over a low water mark at North Devon

The Brewer’s Day By Hunclestan

Another great trip for Tintagel SAC with David Paddock out of Penzance aboard Capriole (Cornwall Charters). This should really have been called “The Brewer’s Day”. Shaun Brewer of Camelford certainly stole the show with a Ballan Wrasse of 3.048kg (6lbs 12ozs) 141%. Shaun caught this fish on a live joey mackerel!!

A new Tintagel SAC Boat record, club Boat Fish of the month and best Club Boat Specimen of the year so far. This fish was an ounce short of the County record. Not bad, but then shortly afterwards he followed it up with a Pollack of 6.548kg (14 lbs 6ozs) 85%. Oh and he also had a red gurnard of 83%, and a dogfish of 81%. Not bad, I think he might have moved up a few places in the CFSA boat championships. Well done Shaun and a big thanks to Dave Paddock for making it ‘The Brewer’s Day’

Brixham report, obsession Brixham the home of biguns and whoppers, its been a while since my last report, so I’ll start with the shark fishing as this year has been the best ever, with many big blues landed on a single tide, this is definitely something you guys should try out next year July till the end of September. Not to forget our inshore fishing on the skarrise sand Banks with lots of big fat blondes, come guys we all like a big blonde. Also we have been having are fair share of tope and placie, our wreck fishing has been steady with big numbers

of bass coming to the net, all so some great sport with the conger eels and ling,, we are starting to see some good fresh pollock on the wrecks now, it won’t be long before the main run of big fish starts to migrate on to the wrecks, we are also running through November and December some inshore cod fishing trips this is definitely one to get one guys. Remember obsession Brixham is the largest fastest charter boat in the Brixham fleet. Just call kev 07964 053347 or Lee 07762911235

PLYMOUTH

PLYMOUTH CLUB SCENE

SIZE MATTERS

By Scott Smy

There I was thinking there hadn’t been too many of fish caught this month and literally just as I was about to submit my report I hear of a cracking 10lb pollack caught from a South Hams beach by Tommy Griffiths. This is a cracking pollack from the shore and Tommy certainly deserves all the plaudits that come his way. Well done mate. October is still a good month for finding summer species such as gilthead bream and local Plymouth angler Tony Brinton landed a cracker of 7-11 from a local estuary mark. If we manage to avoid a lengthy cold spell then there is still the chance of finding good giltheads into November, particularly in the deeper water estuaries such as The Fal and Helford down in Cornwall. I am hearing good numbers of eels showing at shore marks along Plymouth Hoe and in the River Tamar although the average size is quite small at present. However as the water temperatures start to drop we should start seeing some of the larger specimens showing up from places such as Mountbatten, Devils Point and Mutton Cove. I have also heard rumours of the odd cod showing from the River Tamar. Hopefully I will be reporting on the first double-figure speci in my December report. Huss are once again showing again from many of the rock marks around the South Hams after going on the summer holidays. I love fishing the rock marks this time of year as there is always the chance of getting a decent eel or even a big pollack if fishing

large fish baits on the bottom. Just make sure you set your drag. Flounders should start showing from the middle of next month at the Kingsbridge and River Teign estuaries. With regard to the latter it is worth noting that the Annual Teignmouth Flounder Championships take place over the weekend of the 3rd and 4th November 2018. If you plan to fish it then get your crab orders in early! Out on the boats, Fred Doey of Castaways SAC has been enjoying a real purple patch. Having just missed out on a new British Record boat caught red gurnard last month by just 1oz he recently enjoyed a successful trip for garfish finding a number of fish to 2-3 which was a new Castaways SAC boat record. A further trip with club member Jeff Brownlow produced a number of large huss and spurs, with Jeff’s biggest fish huss going 13-1 and a spur of 14-1 which were both released after weighing ashore. Nice one Jeffrey! Mark Hayman and Lloyd Carty have both recently taken-up kayak fishing and if there first trips are anything to go by it looks like a cracking decision. Lloyd found a nice SE ray of 12-6 on his first trip whilst fishing off Challaborough (one of several caught during the session) whilst a trip to the pits on the Skerries produced a good number of blonde rays to just over 20lb. Cracking fish Team Dipp Squad! That’s it from me for this month – happy dipping.

CHESIL BEACH

CHESIL BEACH REPORT By Gareth Mayers

The cod fishing seems to be on the up on chesil with lovely conditioned fish around the 3-5lb mark being caught along the beach with a couple of better size cod also making an appearance.

only downside to this is that its very likely you will encounter the vast numbers of dogfish, pout and other unwanted species that will find the bait before the cod have a chance.

Ideal conditions to target cod would be after a onshore blow which would result in the sea being coloured bringing the fish closer to shore.

The whiting have arrived and for most are in the same category as dogfish ect, but the whiting have been a respectable size with many reports of fish to over a pound or so providing dinner for some anglers.

If you are able to cast considerable distances with bait then waiting for the clarity of the water to worsen shouldn’t be an issue as long as you are fishing along the deeper parts of the beach as plenty of cod can be caught in sunny, flat calm conditions with the water still perfectly clear. Another good reason to fish daylight hours for cod is that the nuisance fish are not as active meaning your bait has a chance to fish freely with no interference from any other undesirable species. For those that can’t quite hit the distance don’t be put off… as I said above some of the best fishing can be after an onshore blow meaning casting bigger distances isn’t required. Fishing at night will also result in cod being caught at a shorter casting range but the

Gurnard

Using live baits for cod can be deadly and can also produce some big fish! One way to achieve this is to have a small trailing hook baited with worm or a small fish bait tied to the bottom of your main hook. Then when a bait fish has taken the bait hopefully a cod will move in and engulf the whole lot.

Harry and Tash from VMO

The plaice fishing has been providing good sport with many fish falling to cod baits. The average size seem to be over a pound with a fair few being up near the 3lb bracket. If your out fishing soon good luck and tight lines …. Codling

POOLE REPORT by Philip Higgins

The Plaice fishing has continued to excel with fish to 3lb 12ozs being landed caught by Steve whilst fishing on a Sea Fishing Poole organised trip during his holiday. Local angling club Albion SAC had another excellent day landing well over 100 Plaice and a week later I managed to land my best Plaice this season not the biggest we have had but at 3lb 11ozs I was well pleased. After a few days of strong southerly winds which clouded the water the Plaice fishing has taken a hit and a settled few days are needed to restore water clarity which hopefully will see a few more caught before they start their annual migration. Mackeral made a short-lived comeback with plenty near the piers allowing anglers to stock up for the winter. Local angler Colin Harding was enjoying catching early Whiting when his rod bent double and after a long fight he landed a PB Blonde Ray of 22lb 8ozs not a massive fish but it was landed on spinning gear quite an achievement. Matt Rowe’s

Piscary finished his evening Sole trips with the best catch of 11 Sole including a cracking one weighing 2lb 4 ozs by Dave Colcough. In the harbour several Codling have been caught by private boats fishing around the ‘turning circle’ and few early Flounders have been caught. Looking ahead the attentions turn to Cod and Whiting.

POOLE

SILVER SPRAY REPORT By Sam Cumming

As I mentioned at the end of the last report we had a whole week of shark trips lined up at the start of October. Weather saw off the first two days and after a solid effort on the Wednesday for no results we got things rolling on Thursday morning with a small porbeagle of about 50lb. There seems to be a lot of these around for the second year in a row, good news for the future of our shark angling as they put on size and more of them reach maturity for breeding. Thursday afternoon threw up a first for Silver Spray in the form of a thresher shark, having never seen one before it was amazing to see how big the tail was and how small the mouth is. The speed of these creatures was also off the charts with snap changes of direction one of the main challenges of the fight. Well done to Dave Mynors, not many people have landed a porbeagle and a thresher

Martin Ryan 100lb thresher shark silver spray II

in the same day would be my guess. The last day of our week saw our second ever thresher shark. It took off with such a face melting run that I thought we might run out of line before I could get the engines on and chased it down, luckily enough it stopped and came back at us just before this happened. Although slightly smaller than the first day’s fish it certainly gave a harder fight. All the sharks were caught using just a 10/0 circle hook and after a quick tap with the t bar and a photo were back in the water. Elsewhere we have done our last wreck trip for the year, some good ling to 21lb, pollack, congers and plenty of bream made for a good mixed day at anchor. Over the next month we will turn our attentions to cod and whiting fishing with a few goes for squid and bass mixed in.

ILFRACOMBE / NORTH DEVON REPORT

Sea Angling News, November 2018

NORTH DEVON REPORT

By Wayne Thomas

A wide range of species have been caught from North Devon so far this autumn. Dan Hawkins has taken anglers from Ilfracombe to marks far out in the mouth of the Bristol channel where several blue shark have been tempted the best a fine specimen of 133lb. Ilfracombe charter boat Bluefin has also been putting anglers amongst the fish with several tope caught to over fifty pounds. Bass are also showing over the Horseshoe Reef with anglers now enjoying the option of taking a fish for the table. Shore anglers have enjoyed sport from the estuaries with large numbers of school bass and some specimen grey mullet to over four pounds. Flounder fishing has not yet taken off to any extent with good numbers of school bass seizing ragworm baits before flounder get a chance. On the coast tropical triggerfish have been a welcome addition to catches these along with garfish and mackerel have given summer sport right into mid autumn. There have been plenty of bass from marks

along the coast on both lure and baits but double figure fish seem to be proving elusive. On the beaches there have been some good catches of both small-eyed ray and blonde ray with this likely to continue for a good few weeks. On the deep-water rock marks bull huss, smoothound and occasional tope have rewarded those prepared to put in the effort. Large numbers of small conger are frustrating anglers as they devour baits targeting larger species. Pollock have been showing in good numbers at Ilfracombe Pier where LRF tactics can bring some exciting sport. The pier should give a wide variety of species with king ragworm baits presented on small hooks likely to tempt red mullet, sole, pouting, whiting and dabs.

Dan Miles Redmore – blonde ray 10lb 6.5oz

LANGSTONE

LANGSTONE HARBOUR AREA BOAT FISHING REPORT By Neville Merritt, Southsea Marina Angling Club Late September and early October is usually the time for the first run of cod, but this year the water temperature has remained higher than usual by just a few degrees which may have delayed things. Although there have been some cod caught, it wasn’t until midOctober that they started to show more frequently. On the other hand, there have been plenty of large mackerel still around to give sport on light tackle or just top up the bait supplies. Trigger fish don’t stay around for very long but there are worth targeting while they are here. Bill Arnold shows a typical fish caught in late September – very exotic-looking for a UK fish. Another visitor is the Couches bream, which is far more common in warmer waters of the Mediterranean and Americas. Mick Barry caught this nice 3lb 14oz fish from Valkyrie 6 on squid strip. And to remind us that UK fish can also look exotic, Heber Crawford caught this male and female pair of cuckoo wrasse which wouldn’t look out of place in an aquarium. Squid fishing has been a minority sport along the South Coast for many years but recently there had been much wider interest, partly because there are plenty around, large ones at that, and partly because of the development of squid tactics and tackle pioneered by the Japanese and Australians. We used to rely on a luminus barrel lure costing about £1. Now you can spend over £16 for a rattling, glowing, vibrating, textured lure which although very attractive to squid, it is just as attractive to snags. This can make trips rather expensive. The start of the squid season has arrived in this area and they

should stay around in numbers until late winter, although a stock will remain all year. Most anglers target them from shore marks but we are also catching them from boats. With the price of squid for bait plus the culinary value (much better than frozen!) we expect a lot more to be caught. Heber and Archie Crawford show examples of squid caught recently. Now to cod. I wish we had more photos to show but as mentioned earlier, we have been struggling. One of the earlier cod, a modest fish 6lb 11oz caught by Steve Kelley underwent a quick autopsy and demonstrates what a wide range of food they actually eat – nature’s dustbin. From that you might think there is no excuse for having the “wrong bait”. You can see squid, cuttlefish, dab, crab, dragonets, shellfish, probably a pout and other unidentifiable objects. In the last week we were much encouraged by Tim Andrews and John Evans who turned the corner by catching not one cod but several. Things are looking up at last. Specimen fish reported by Southsea Marina Angling Club this month were a bass of 11lb 10oz for Dave Ford; bass 10lb 8oz to Tim Andrews; undulate ray 14lb for Chris Ellis and Heber Crawford had several large mullet, best 5lb 12oz. Last month we featured junior anglers but we also encourage and celebrate the success of new anglers who may not be as young. New member Mike Gibbons was taken out by Bill Arnold on Limpet for his first ever boat trip and was rewarded with these small eyed and blonde rays. He also caught brill, tub gurnard, launce and mackerel. Now wonder he’s smiling.

Huss Aaron and James

By Richard Saxby

The last month hasn't seen too much action from Burnham but when boats have got out fishing has been very good. If conditions allow then Porlock has been the favoured area targeting the hounds and tope before they disappear. Huss and rays add a bit of variety and a there is always a chance of a decent bass. As autumn moves into winter boats will stay closer to home looking for an early cod with Watchet usually being consistent through November. Common sense has finally prevailed all be it a bit late and we can now retain one bass a day for the table. September 29th 2 boats launched on the start of the ebb and steamed down to Porlock bay, Ultra White with Nigel, Aaron and James Devey along with Seanies Flyer with Martin Quinn and Andy Georgiou. A very busy day for all with some quality fish landed with hounds, huss and rays into double figures and a 26lb tope to James and one of 22lb for Aaron.. Also landed were a thornie of 15-8 for Andy G, a bass of 8-8 for Nigel Devey and a club record tub gurnard of 1-8 for Martin Quinn. October 7th Ultra White and Seanies Flyer were back out joined by Ultra Fisher with 8 anglers onboard. They all started off around Watchet and worked their way back to home waters. Fishing was reasonable with the best fish a thornie of 10-8 to Dave Tether and a huss of 10-0 for Martin Quinn. Fish of the month for September sponsored by Thyers Tackle of Highbridge was won by Andy Georgiou with a thornie of 15-8 and 100%. The next competition is a cod comp on the 11th November The next club meeting is our AGM on Thursday 15th November at Burnham Motor Boat and Sailing Club on the sea front, pop along if you are interested in joining a friendly club. You can keep up-to date with latest news and catches and all things fishy on our facebook page and website Burnham Boat Owners Sea Angling Association. Four Bouys Goes South It had long been an ambition of mine to catch a shark on our own boat so after some research I managed to convince the co-owners of Four Buoys that a 4 day trip to Fowey would produce the goods. So on Monday 24th September me, my brother Stephen, dad Fred and uncle Roy towed the 3 hours down to Cornwall and by 12.00 we were slipping the boat off the trailer into the picturesque harbour. With a settled forecast for the 4 days we decided to head

offshore for the sharks on the middle 2 days and stay inshore on the first and last day. A few drifts just outside the harbour found us enough mackerel for the following day so we moved out a few miles to try and locate an inshore wreck. It was fairly scattered and broken up but held a decent number of pollack which were taking a liking to our soft plastics and a small ling which was a first for the boat. Once we had our fill we came back in and had a slow drift back along the harbour where Stephen caught a nice plaice. A quick wash down before we retrieved the boat then off to our campsite. Tuesday started off with a drift for mackerel to top up the bait box then a steam out to the 10 mile mark. With the chum slick working and 4 baits set at various depths and distances hopes were high and after 40 minutes the first clicks rung out as a shark made off with a bait. Unfortunately the hook didn't stick and this was repeated on the second run. Thankfully the next run resulted in a good hook up and Fred played a nice blue of around 55lbs to the boat. I was next up and it wasn't to long before I landed a small blue of 25lb. Roy was next with another blue of about 40lbs and in between runs we fished on the bottom catching a steady stream of whiting biggest of 2-3 again to Fred. Unfortunately the day came to a premature end when Fred managed to stick a hook right in his finger so a quick trip to minor injuries was needed to get it removed. Wednesday was a foggy start but by the time we had prepped the boat the sun had burnt it off and another fine day lay ahead. Another quick stop for fresh macky both for bait and chum then a 40 minute steam to the same spot from the day before. The wind had changed direction and this resulted in a more southerly drift but the sharks were just as obliging. Stephen was first up with a blue of around 40lb and 4 more followed at regular intervals then we had a strong run on the furthest rod. This fish fought harder and went on several runs and we were all expecting a bigger blue for Fred but as I hand lined the fish up on the trace a porbeagle came out of the depths. Not a monster at around 55lbs but a first both for Fred and the boat, happy days. One more run and I had my first beagle, only a baby at 19lbs but I was chuffed to finally get one, total for the day was 5 blues and 2 porgies. Thursday was our last day and with a 3 hour tow back to Burnham and then a 90 minute drive back to Oxfordshire we fished inshore again. Plenty of mackerel, pollack and I caught another first with a john dory of 2-8. Overall we had a fantastic 4 days with 3 pb's and 6 boat records for Four Buoys. Fowey is a great place to stay and we will return next year.

MINEHEAD BOAT REPORT By Dave Roberts

RECENT CATCHES ABOARD SEAFIRE II

Talk of the charter boat month has to be the lifting of the bass ban. A whole year of no take for recreational anglers only to now be told that the government got it all wrong yet again with their assessment of recreational catches. Ah well, at least now our anglers can target and actually take ONE fish from the sea which actually used to belong to the people in the good old days! Enough of that now, I’m sure you’re all totally sick and tired of all this mindless legislation. Back to reality and despite the ban, bass are strangely proving difficult to locate. All regular marks are

producing but not in any great numbers, still the game is on and some good fish have been taken. Several inshore marks still producing great catches of rays with many blondes topping the twenty pound mark. Cod are still few and far between but then there is still loads of time for these visitors. Spur dogs also on the hit list over the next few weeks, these guys will certainly provide some fantastic sport and in my opinion, this area is well capable of producing the next British record for this species.

BRISTOL CHANNEL SHORE REPORT By Craig Butler

Things have been swimming along lovely here in the good old Bristol Channel over the past month. We’ve seen plenty of rays, Huss, bass, congers, sole, Whiting and lots of codling making up some great catches. This years codling numbers are up from last years dismal showing. Frustratingly for some the numbers of codling are not wide spread throughout the channel as we expect at this time of year. The Minehead & Dunster and Porlock areas seems to hold the better numbers with catches ranging from just the 1 to 7-8 in a session. Sizes are our standard 1-3lbers with a 2lber being the run of the mill at present. As we move into the coming month we will hopefully see a better stamp showing up on the shore. Early signs from the local Watchet boats are positive with 8-12lb cod proving present in the channel so the anglers putting rod hours in on the shore will be rewarded as normal. The Porlock and Bossington area has been producing some nice Huss with many 6-10lbers making up mixed bags of fish. Low water at Minehead has continued with consistent ray action, mainly small eyed and spotted ray featuring. Minehead golf links through to Broken wall at Blue Anchor has been without doubt the hot bed for the codling and will continue with steady catches and some good bass along side them. Over the next month codling should hopefully move up

around Watchet , St Audries and the Somerset reefs . Strap congers can be a real pain tho if using squid baits. Burnham on sea has a few codling and tends to be a good bet when targeting them here over low water on neap tides also expect some excellent bass, thornback Ray , congers and sole to make up catches. Brean down and Sandpoint marks have plenty of thornbacks, congers and a few bass present with the hope of a few codling available with the good opportunity for a better cod. Something I like to mention at this time of year regarding fresh worm baits. If you are planning a session on the cod and will be wanting some fresh lug or rag it’s extremely advisable to pre order and pay for this with the Tackle shop of your choice to guarantee having it. Tackle shops don’t order in an endless supply and often work out what they need depending on the up coming weather and tides. Working in a tackle shop myself it’s frustratingly to tell a customer we have none available as it’s either all booked up or sold . And the aim of the shop is to sell out of good quality live bait before it become not so good quality live bait because that’s what happens when they take a big risk and mass order. Anyway that said most shops do have surplus available for walk in last minute fishing sessions. Always best to order though. Tightlines and happy hunting over the next month...

WEYMOUTH

Sea Angling News, November 2018

Port Report WIBAC stands for the Weymouth International Boat Angling Competition and it is indeed an apt description of the event with some of the best anglers from all over Europe taking part. For the first time in its 17 year history, a nonBritish angler took first place with Martin Hubert from Denmark winning by a considerable margin ahead of second placed Ray Barron and Scott Gibson third. A table of results hardly conveys the story of such an event and this year I was invited, as a retiring skipper, to participate and experience the competition from an angler’s point of view. The intensity of the competition from literally minute to minute let alone day to day is certainly not for every angler. Competition angling requires massive preparation with each of the five days demanding a different approach to the tackle required and the tactics needed. A lack of concentration within any of the days can lead to an unravelling of the individual’s carefully constructed game plan with the chance of success slipping away easily. The competitor really needs to be 100% focussed throughout each day in the WIBAC with so many really talented and experienced anglers participating. There are five very different days… Day One concentrated on the rays, day 2 was most species, Day 3 ‘Big Fish’, Day 4 allowed 5 of each nominated species to count whilst the final day allowed fishing with Lures only. As an competitors (who failed miserably I must add) I used 3lb 8oz of lead during the Big Fish and Ray days and just 1 ounce at times during the other three disciplines. It took me a good two weeks of lengthy evenings to prepare all the various rigs and back up tackle required to cover all the possible options and scenarios that the WIBAC can present. I was assisted a great deal by the other competitors who sent me rig diagrams, rigs to copy, rigs they’d made for me to try out and, even on the day of a match, giving me tackle items to use (which worked!) that I’d never seen before let alone used. We must all have changed rigs a hundred times of more during the week….it was indeed a very intense but extremely rewarding and enjoyable experience. And some of the fish caught? Well, just take a read of these ‘best fish caught’ results with ballan wrasse to 5lb 6oz; bass to 8lb; bream to 3lb 8oz; blonde rays to 20lb 4oz; huss to14lb 6oz; conger to 71lb, pollack to13lb 8oz; tope to 30lb and many others including a 100lb porbeagle shark, caught by Irene Hellberg from Sweden and a benito tuna caught by Mattias Haillez from Holland. And there was quantity as well as quality. During the Big Fish Day winner (and organiser of the WIBAC) Andy Selby landed 18 conger within the 6 hour allotted time and Martin Hubert managed 11 blonde rays on Ray Day. This is amazing fishing and just shows what is on offer from Weymouth if anglers have the talent and tackle to catch the fish. Andy’s tackle was totally different from anything I have seen and shows just how important it is to keep an open mind and how much there is always to learn. There is a massive difference between the intensity of match fishing and to the relaxation of having a day out angling but we skippers often hear our customers saying that there are ‘no fish’. Well, there are….stacks of fish…but you have to put a good deal of thought into outwitting what seems to be a creature that is far more wily than we might give credit. I am currently skippering a local dive boat. The past two days (20th/21st October) has been amazing weather and we have been right out onto the 60 metre wrecks we use for angling. Be assured there are a lot of big pollack (as well as conger) on them…I’ve seen the photo’s and videos! The divers reported that the wrecks we visited were festooned with lures and lost tackle. The fish must learn to avoid such artificial

offerings and we, as anglers, have to keep refining out techniques and approach to keep up with the apparent ability of the fish to see through our attempts to catch them. October is a great month for all the inshore species as can be seen in these results. The bream have been plentiful, there are turbot and brill on the various banks, there are undulates, blondes, spotted and thornback rays from a whole range of marks as well as conger all over the place. A real unexpected highlight has been with the amount of porbeagle shark plus a few blue sharks taking the baits intended for the conger and rays and actually being brought to the boat for photo’s before being released. Many of the charter boats now have side doors so the sharks can be slipped gently onto the deck with the angler kneeling beside the catch for the photograph before the shark can be slipped back into the sea.

12yr old Zac with his 12lb undulate ray caught aboard Sally Ann Jo

Nice brill for Steve aboard Duchess II

And…with the allowance of being able to keep a whole bass each…there has been some very successful attempts of the bass with some excellent specimens taken on lures. The lifting of the total non keep ruling has injected a very welcome boost into the bass trip bookings. And now for November. November has been the top month for bass over the past 10 years. Small joey mackerel are very much around bring the bass into the Race where today’s amazing lures will give the angler a great chance of connecting with this spectacular fish. The bream, because of the very pleasant weather (long may it continue) could stay for a week or so into the month. Ray fishing will continue for those that enjoy a hard tussle on down-tiding tackle in a fast tide although many competitors in the WIBAC used uptiding gear with long nose grip leads. An 8 ounce long nose gripper lead cast directly up the tide will equate to a 2lb lead fished downtide. If you haven’t tried it, then why not give it a go? Many anglers now use fixed spool reels which have developed so much over recent years and are much easier to cast successfully with from a boat. Yes, they can be expensive but the top models are incredible pieces of equipment and capable of handling big leads and very big fish.

Recent bream catches on Duchess II

Wrecking will start again with the pollack being the main quarry and expect the sharks to attack as they are being eased to the boat. There is plenty on offer, so be inspired. Splash out on some of the latest gear. Keep up with the developments in your sport. Enter the WIBAC next year and be prepared to be thrashed on a daily basis but come away having seen and learned more in a week than in a year of fishing in a set style that may no longer be working as well as it once did. I won an award in the WIBAC. I was nominated for the Dinosaur Award. This is a fun award presented to the angler who remains in the past with his tackle and approach. Well, that’s me, a dinosaur, and maybe that is you too. I am going to take away with me a renewed enthusiasm from observing and learning from the very dedicated and talented anglers I have fished alongside this week and I am on a mission to improve. After all, what’s the point of stagnating within one’s chosen hobby? Far better to do everything one can to adapt to the current angling challenges with today’s amazing equipment and tackle with the intention of outwitting those increasingly smart fish. Thank you to all our European angling friends for coming to Weymouth and to all our many loyal and welcomed customers who support our charter fleet throughout the year. Angling Trust lands £250,000 funding to campaign to protect fish stocks The Angling Trust has successfully applied for £250,000 funding from the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation to campaign over the next three years on high priority conservation issues affecting marine and freshwater fish. This award builds on a grant from the same funder over the last two years and will enable the Trust to expand its capacity to represent anglers on conservation issues at a time when many fish stocks are in decline and great political uncertainty about environmental regulations and commercial fishing arrangements after the UK leaves the European Union.

at sea to create more sustainable fish stocks. The Esmée Fairbairn Foundation requires the Angling Trust to match fund the grant with income from membership subscriptions and other income over the course of the three years. The Angling Trust is also working closely with WWF and The Rivers Trust on a partnership proposal to a number of other funders to deploy a wide range of methods to advocate for urgent action to reverse the widespread decline in the aquatic environment over recent decades.

The grant will specifically fund three priority campaigns to secure:

Mark Lloyd, Chief Executive of the Angling Trust & Fish Legal said: “It’s fantastic news that one of the country’s largest and most respected charitable funders has decided to increase its support for our work. We now need more anglers to support their united representative body so that we can continue to expand our work to secure sustainable fish stocks at a time of unprecedented threats and continue to develop opportunities for anglers.”

new agricultural policies that benefit the water environment by reducing pollution, low flows and flooding caused by unsustainable farming practices; policy changes that move inshore fish stocks towards recovery by protecting fish, nursery areas and inshore habitats; greater restrictions on commercial fishing

Angling passes vote of confidence at Party Conferences shooters invest hundreds of millions of pounds protecting an environment that the general public also enjoy at the same time as supporting tens of thousands of jobs and small businesses often in communities often suffering from high levels of deprivation.”

Once again the voice of angling was heard at the annual party political conferences where the value of our sport was endorsed by politicians from right across the political spectrum thanks to strong lobbying by the Angling Trust. In partnership with the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC), Angling Trust representatives have attended the Liberal Democrat, Labour and Conservative conferences over the last three weeks to speak about the importance of angling at a series of specially organised Rural Receptions attended by ministers and shadow ministers, MPs, councillors and party delegates. First up was the Lib Dem gathering in Brighton where Baroness Cathy Bakewell, the Liberal’s Lords spokesperson on environment, food and rural affairs, said: “I fully appreciate the contribution made by shooting and fishing to rural and coastal life. I have spent many enjoyable hours sitting on river banks with my husband while he fishes and I am well versed in its benefits to the economy and the environment.” In response David Mitchell, the Angling Trust’s Head of Marine, said: “Around two million people go fishing in the UK each year and we are a nation of anglers and shooters. Our role in protecting the environment and supporting rural and coastal economies is often overlooked by the general public. But millions of anglers and

For Labour, who met this year in Liverpool, Shadow Environment Secretary Sue Hayman MP applauded the work of both organisations saying: “Both BASC and the Angling Trust carry out vital conservation work. Sustainability has to be at the heart of everything we do. We want people to be able to continue to enjoy shooting and angling while promoting conservation, biodiversity and protecting our environment. I’ll keep working with BASC and the Angling Trust to ensure that this sustainability and conservation of British wildlife is high on the policy agenda at Westminster.” A similar message was delivered to the Conservative Conference by government minister Mark Spencer. Addressing the Conservative audience Liverpool Angling Trust Campaigns Chief, and former MP Martin Salter said: “Although the economic benefits of recreational fishing are massive fishing is about much more than catching fish or spending our spare cash. It has huge benefits for individuals and communities in terms of our health and well-being, our understanding of both the countryside and the environment and even in some cases in diverting kids at risk away from anti-social behaviour, drugs and crime. We are extremely fortunate at the Angling Trust to have a great working relationship with MPs of all parties on the All Party Angling Group and it’s important to us to have parliamentarians who know and understand the issues that affect our sport and who are happy to see them raised in Westminster and with ministers.”

Osprey Open report Dr. John A. O’Connor,

Some of the winners, pictured (left to right) are, Hayden Cole, Keith Williams, Daniel and Shane Tucker with some of their raffle prizes.

Sunday 7th October 2018, once again, as in all recent years, saw the weather gods in benevolent mood, for this was the day that the Osprey Sea Angling Club, based in Pembroke Dock, held its annual open beach fishing competition or flatfish festival to give it its other more descriptive name. Again, this year, the fish turned up, with two Golden Grey Mullet, an average number of in size Flounder and plenty of Lesser Spotted Dogfish, as tends to happen most years. Conditions did look good from the off with a gentle breeze and a small surf running just enough to give coloured water on a sunny autumn day.

tie between the winner 2 years ago, Osprey Vice Chairman, Haydn Cole from Lamphey and Daniel Tucker from Milford, son of last year’s winner, Shane. They had 2 Flounder each for 705gms. They also never fail to bring raffle prizes with them for which we are always eternally grateful and thank them very much for his support. Top Junior, was Dan Fisher with a Flounder of 300gms. The pair’s competition was again won by Shane and his son Daniel with a bag of 2Kg 315gms. Incidentally, they also cleaned up in the raffle, I suppose when your luck is in it is in. In second in the pairs were Peter Evans and Kevin Hughes with 1Kg 560gms.

67 anglers, including 4 Ladies and 3 Juniors (all boys) turned out to support the club for which the Osprey club members are very grateful and the organisers thank them one and all. 23 anglers, including 1 Junior weighed in 16 Flounder, on a par with the last 2 years, 2 Golden Grey Mullet and 14 Lesser Spotted Dogfish, with many other dogs caught; again a relative dog fest. Other fish such as 3 Beard Rockling weren’t caught this year, preventing anglers from recording at least something, if their pair’s partner had caught, meaning they were out in that category, as both anglers had to weigh in for their score to count.

The Stewards draw was won by the Osprey President John O’Connor, an unusual occurrence and we thank all the stewards for their help in signing in fish on the beach. Provisional dates for your diaries are 6th January for the Air Ambulance Open and 20th January for an open match to support the local RNLI, with a possible new Charity Open to support the Blood Bikes charity on 17th February, though this may be better held in the Autumn as catches tend to start falling off in February.

The winner, once again, was a local angler from Milford Haven, but not, this year, an Osprey member, Keith Williams, a regular supporter of these Open events, with 3 Flounder for 1Kg and 5gms. Second, from Swansea, was another regular, but from Swansea, Peter Evans with a Lesser Spotted Dogfish of 795gms just nudging another Swansea rod, Mike Watkins who had a Golden Grey Mullet, by 10gms out of the heaviest fish of the day for which second prize was up for grabs. Third place was a

Finally, thanks must go to Ian Wilkinson of the Temple Bar Inn for accommodating us, providing the bottle for the stewards draw, to club members and others that helped on the day and also to our sponsors who donated cash and raffle prizes to further help support the club. These were, in no particular order, Shane Tucker, Martin and Sandra Thompson of Anglers Corner in Milford Haven, John O’Connor, Steve Parry and Leigh Rogers. There was also a donation of weights for the raffle from one of the anglers but it was forgotten to write down his name for which we are truly sorry but thank him all the same.

On Wednesday 3rd October Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club held a mid-week recreational boat trip out of Poole aboard charter boat “Strongbow”. A light north westerly wind in the morning sadly got up to a strong westerly in the afternoon. 7 club members started the day off with a drift trying to get mackerel for bait in which a few were caught as well as scad and pouting. We then drifted for plaice and a few were caught. Later we anchored just of Hengistbury Head and caught conger eels, pouting, mackerel, black bream, ballan, baillion and corkwing wrasse and garfish. As the wind started to get stronger we went into Poole Harbour to drift for plaice which sadly did not materialize but Robin Lane managed a good gilthead bream. 12 different species were caught during the day and Pete Drodge had a successful day catching 12 plaice. Everyone on board had a very enjoyable day. Only edible fish were retained. All other fish were returned straight away.

LDSFC Lymington & district sea fishing club results of large boat competition 30 September 2018 Ten Lymington & District Sea Fishing Club members enjoyed the fine late September’s weather aboard Private Venture, skippered by Art Savage. The main target was plaice, which duly obliged with everyone catching a few; the best of them was one of 2lbs 1oz caught by Roland Blomfield. With the tide easing, a move was made to Freshwater Bay, which produced a few small congers and dogfish. together with a bull huss of around 10lbs for Alec Harmer. A move back inshore found sport to be slow.

took part and helped to make it a great morning with a special thanks to all the sponsors:

The second competition of 2018 was held over the weekend of the 15th and 16th of September. Unfortunately the weather took its toll on the Sunday and only one boat ventured out to sheltered waters.
