ANGLING TRUST CALLS ON TIDAL LAGOON COMPANY TO PROVE TURBINES ARE FISH FRIENDLY

BIG DORSET LING...

The Angling Trust has called on the company proposing the world’s first tidal lagoon hydropower scheme in the Severn Estuary to provide independent evidence that the turbines will not kill fish. In a series of media interviews on Monday this week, the Trust highlighted the concerns of anglers and environmentalists about the potential impact of the proposals on marine and migratory fish and other wildlife. The Severn Estuary is a home to numerous marine fish such as cod, bass, flounder, rays and sharks and is also a conduit for 25% of the salmon in England & Wales which return to spawn in rivers including the Severn, Wye, Usk, Neath and Taff. Endangered species such as eels, shad and lamprey also use the estuary as a migration route, as well as highly prized sea trout. Very large numbers of these fish would inevitably be caught in these vast lagoons and would have no choice but to pass through the turbines. Many species spend several weeks or months swimming around the estuary before heading upstream (and before they go to sea as juveniles), during which time they would have an unpredictable but significant number of chances of being caught in the lagoons. The first £1 billion lagoon, in Swansea Bay, involving a six-mile long sea-wall to hold back and then harness tidal flows, has now almost completed the public inquiry stage. This week the company unveiled plans for several more, even larger lagoons around the estuary all of which would be adjacent to the mouths of rivers flowing into the estuary.

WINNER Jon Choat from Watford with a Ling weighing in at 34lb caught aboard Fish-on 2 out of Weymouth.

Fish Legal, which is united with the Angling Trust, has been helping its member clubs in South Wales take part in the public inquiry and other consultations and its lawyers have yet to receive credible assurances from Tidal Lagoon (Swansea Bay) PLC that the project will be fish-friendly, despite numerous requests. Last year, Fish Legal and a number of local angling clubs commissioned a report by fisheries scientists APEM Ltd. which confirmed that there were major information gaps and limited levels of confidence in the modelling by the company. Many of the rivers flowing into the Severn Estuary are designated as Special Areas of Conservation for -

The first ever Torbay Shore League Presentation Evening took place at the Brixham Sea Angling Club headquarters in Castor Road. The league has been started only last year by two local anglers, Jason Upham and Ashley Cockram. Over the last ten months or so teams of four anglers have taken part in nine local matches. The fishing area has been selected to enable some good area's to be fished, the area is from plymouth up to Weymouth and it also includes the North Coast. The winning team from the nine matches were team 50/50 who scored 233 points. Not far behind were team Teignmouth who scored 208 points. The winners of the K/O cup this year went to the Brixham Barbs. The best specimen fish caught through the year went to Roy Repton who caught a cracking Grey Mullet of 6lb 8oz and the angler with the best three fish was Ashley Cockram with a total of 451% for his three fish total. As well as all the awards made on the night there were also fish of the match awards made, these came in the form of

some cracking reels supplied by Mark at Alderney Angling. The new season starts again on May16th/17th 2015. With sponsorship already in place for this new year from Sakuma and Anyfish Anywhere. Anyone wishing to enter a team or find out more about this great little league should contact Jason or Ashley direct. There is a Face Book page up and running for the Torbay Shore League. Both Jason and Ashley would like to thank everybody for taking part last year and also everybody that has supported the League in the way of sponsorship etc. The two pictures show team 50/50 (L to R Jason Upham, Ashley Cockram, Mike Spiller, Roy Repton and Shay Upham. The other picture shows the cracking prizes table on the night. All the awards on the night were made by Mike Spiller who is the local Angling Trust Wyvern Region Secretary.

Continued from page 1... their fish species and developers are required by law to prove to a very high standard that their actions will not damage those fish populations. Another company Hafren Power, which brought forward proposals last year for a barrage across the river, similarly failed to provide this proof which was a critical factor in the government’s decision not to offer its support for the plans. The Angling Trust urges the Lagoon company not to make the same mistake. A report in October 2010 by the Department for Energy and Climate Change concluded: “Any tidal power scheme has the potential to significantly disrupt both nursery areas and the passage of fish up the estuary, which for some species may lead to the collapse of the associated fisheries.” Mark Lloyd, Chief Executive of the Angling Trust & Fish Legal said: “We urge the developers to provide independently-

verified evidence that they have found ways to make their turbines safe for fish. Significant harm to migratory and marine fish stocks in the Severn Estuary and its many rivers would have a huge impact on the wellbeing of tens of thousands of people who love their fishing, and provide a vital contribution to the local economy and jobs in South Wales. Several of the rivers are protected by international conservation law for their fish stocks and the onus is on the developers to demonstrate that these lagoons will not damage those protected fisheries.” John Gregory, Executive Director of the Institute of Fisheries Management said: "It’s likely that tidal lagoons could play a significant part in the UK’s energy mix but there will be environmental consequences and it’s essential that they are properly assessed and understood before any decisions on the sustainable nature of these lagoons are taken."

THAMES ESTUARY REPORT by Lee Bollingbroke

There has been some fantastic fishing in the last few weeks and some subtle changes as we near spring as several rays have started moving back into the estuaries with some days of a dozen fish or more and the next day we struggle to catch three or four. Still some very good catches of codling with the later run of fish noticeably plumper and up to four to five pounds but that’s as big as the average codling has been in the Thames estuary with very few any bigger than this. Offshore when the tides and weather allow the odd bigger cod have been caught but these have been few and far between, there has also been reports of a few

big spur dogs well offshore but once again getting the tides and weather to get offshore has been trying and anglers would rather go for the smaller codling and rays than travel miles on broken promises. The river Blackwater has been producing some fantastic sport on the right tides with John Rawls boat Dafniy Carrol & Stewart Belbins boat Razorbill catching seventy plus good codling on several days from various marks in the river. Some very good whiting have started to move inshore as have a few dog fish but its thornback rays that we will start targeting in the next few weeks and its looking promising for another bumper year for them.

Guinea…where?? Take four old(ish) guys with time on their hands and looking for a unique fishing experience, a company that specialises in organising fishing holidays in exotic locations around the world and an isolated island off the coast of Africa and you end up with an experience that you will truly never forget. The four of us (Mick Arrowsmith, Jon Mattick, Tim Poat and myself) were looking for a fishing challenge and that led us to the doorstep of Richard Sheard and his company World Sport Fishing. Having seen the opportunities available to catch big fish in Guinea Bissau, it didn’t take long for us to sign up for a 10 day trip. Now I have found that if you tell someone that you’re going to Guinea Bissau their reply will invariably be “Where the hell is that?”. So let me begin by explaining precisely where we were going. Guinea Bissau lies on the west coast of Africa, sandwiched between southern Senegal and Guinea. Located offshore from the mainland is the Bijagos archipelago, a cluster of 88 islands of which about 20 are inhabited. It was to one of these islands, Orango, that we were heading. For the purists, the exact location of Orango is N-11°-10’-8” / W-16°9’-00”. In todays climate, the mention of West Africa brings the word Ebola to mind. Allow me to clarify the situation. There have been no reported cases of Ebola in Guinea Bissau! The nearest reported case is over 700 miles away. Sadly, the mere mention of the disease, was enough to cause some anglers to needlessly cancel their holidays. Prior to going we visited Richard and his team at their offices in Wyboston, Beds. We found this chance to have a chat about our trip very useful. To save having to take rod cases bulging with kit we had previously decided to take up the rod and tackle hire package on offer by the company. The visit gave us the chance to get our hands on the rods and reels that we’d be using and to understand the need to buy our own ‘spare’ tackle, to make good any losses or damaged items. If you take up this option any losses must be paid for (in cash, no credit card facilities) on the island at the end of your stay. Actually getting to Orango proved to be a drawn out affair. From West Somerset to the Orango Parque Hotel entailed a journey of 34 hours. Flying from Gatwick to Casablanca, a 6 hour lay-over then an 11pm flight from Casablanca to the country’s capital Bissau. We were met at the airport by the companies rep Maxi, who guided us through the drawn out Visa issuing (goodbye to €85 visa cost and €30 tourist tax), before clambering onto the minibus for the 45 minute journey to the Hotel Marazul for a wash/brush up before embarking onto the boats for a 3½ hour journey to the Island. Here we got to meet three others who were joining us, Dave, Denver (on their third trip to GB) and Roy ( a carpman who booked last minute…looking for something different!). Sadly, it was here that the well laid plans fell apart. Whoever has been to Africa will know that there is a phrase that sums up everything that can go wrong there...it’s “Hey, remember this is Africa”. We experienced our first of these moments as we waited to depart from the Hotel. A problem with purchasing the weeks boat fuel meant that we didn’t leave for the island until 1.30pm, instead of the planned 6.30am, meaning that we didn’t get to the island until 4.30pm, missing out on our first fishing session that had been booked for that afternoon. After room allocation we were given our rod/tackle packs, which we checked and signed for. The Parque Hotel is on the northern coast of the island and consists of an open air seating area with reception/bar/ restaurant and local tribal museum. The 8 rooms provided are in two hut style blocks and have twin or double beds (with mozzie nets), toilet, shower (cold water only), sink and bidet. There is no air conditioning but some of the rooms do have electric fans. The food is basic, but very good. You eat what you catch, snapper, barracuda, captain fish, cobia, the occasional European meal and loads of fruit. I would love to be able to tell you more about the fabulous bird and wildlife all around the hotel, but sadly the word count prevents me from doing so. Still, we were finally there, tired, but raring to go. We rose nice and early the following morning and after a breakfast of toasted roll and omelette (same every morning except the 2 occasions when they forgot to cook the omelette!) we experienced our second “Hey remember this is Africa” moment. Pepe our guide/translator/boat-hand informed us that one of the two boats we’d booked had an engine

GUINEA BISSAU REPORT problem and that all four of us would all have to cram onto one boat. Hey ho, no point in grumbling, let’s get out there and fish! And fish we did! Each morning we first went for the live bait. Fishing Sabikis we hunted the Yaboys and found them! Unfortunately the ones we found proved to be a little bit bigger than the ones they normally catch and as a result of this the sabikis we’d been told to take proved next to useless, with the hooks straightening out after the first or second fish. Luckily I’d packed a couple of packs of herring sabikis and these proved to be much better. For the first couple of mornings after live bait catching we drifted a nearby reef and this was where the fun started. Red snapper (4 types), cobia, cassava and barracuda showed in numbers and a steady stream of fish came to the boat. Once enough had been caught for the hotel and the nearby village a catch and release policy kicked in. In the afternoons it was off to a mid-channel reef that proved to be tackle hungry with a very fast flowing tide, but still produced fish. The tackle packs we’d hired clearly showed that the normal style of fishing would be popping, jigging and trolling. However, we had chosen small neap tides with a view to bottom fishing as much as possible. It transpired the lead weights on board the boats were wholly inadequate for the speed of the tide. We only managed to get around this by using insulating tape (remember to take some) to bind two or even three leads together. We wish we had been warned about this as we could easily have taken some suitable leads with us. By the end of the week we had only trolled once (barracuda and snapper), jigged once (barracuda) and popped twice (a couple of follows, no fish). By day three, two small engines had been found for the broken down boat. The size of the engines prevented the boat from travelling too far away from the island, but this hardly mattered as the fishing was that good, big and plentiful fish are to found nearly everywhere, including close in. However, we were not there just for the big fish, we were also after as many species as we could catch too! There were times when the skippers struggled to get their heads around the fact that we also wanted to catch small fish, but persistence paid off and we won the day. On the other boat Dave, Denver and Roy stayed on the big fish and were rewarded with several cobia, stingray and sharks over the 50 kilo mark. Sadly it also saw Denver donate two smashed rods to the Hotels Tree of Death. Now no trip to the islands is complete without visiting the Stacks, made famous by Robson Green in his first Extreme Fishing series. The only visible remnants of a 1950s wreck, the Stacks tower 50 feet out of the water, some two hours offshore. We had heard that they hadn’t been fishing well and that it was a gamble to go out there. I’m afraid it had to be done and so, on alternative days, off we steamed. There we popped and drifted. It was fruitless until the tide slackened and we could anchor to fish the bottom. Straight away we were into fish, including large remora, groupers, stingrays, snappers, sweet lips, dorads and barracuda to mention but a few. The variety of fishing available is amazing. Throughout the week we fished an estuary mouth, deep gullies, reef marks and wrecks. We popped off the beach and fly fished off and span off the Hotel pier. The best of the week was saved for Tim on the final day. He started off with a 50 kilo cobia. His second fish was a 125 kilo nurse shark. He then hooked into what he thought was another huge shark. His line was slowly moving uptide, when suddenly the water 15 feet to my left erupted and a very large Tarpon shot vertically out of the water, looking eye to eye with me. As Tim began his battle with this monster, skipper Max, who had been quietly handlining a live-bait, suddenly announced that he too had a big fish on. Tim battled his tarpon for one hour 40 minutes. It had him on his knees, hanging over the side, running around the boat and just standing still grunting and sweating (I was reduced to the status of waterboy and cameraman). With the 100 kilo fish apparently beaten, the leader in sight and less than 10feet of line to reel in, the tarpon had one last small run, directly under the boat. The line touched the hull and the fish was off, lazily swimming away on the surface. Whilst Tim retired to the front of the boat, drained and uttering a few choice Anglo-Saxon expletives, Max and crewman Seidu feverishly took the line off Tims reel and wound on the hand-line containing Maxs “big, big fish”. The rod was handed to Tim to finish the job he’d started. Within minutes the rod had snapped. The fish surfaced several times and Max estimated

Sea Angling News, April 2015

its size to be in the 200-225 kilo bracket, twice the size of Tims previous one. Sadly, it was not to be the dream ending for Tim. After being on the handline and then the rod for close on two hours, the hook knot rubbed through and the fish, once again close to the boat, swam off. Looking back on that session I know Tim agrees that he has never had, nor is he ever likely to have another fishing session like that one. A true experience. By the end of our week we had managed to catch 41 species of fish, with several over the 50 kilo mark. Jon led the way with 28 different species. We had lost count of the umber of fish we’d caught. To summarise, this was one hell of a fishing holiday. The journey to the island, its isolation and ambience, the wildlife and the fishing all contribute towards the feeling that you’ve experienced something special. I’d like to thank Richard and his crew at World Sport Fishing and also the guys on the island Pepe, Max, Nalla, Jay, Seidu and Hussein for their hard work, for putting up with us and for giving us memories that will stay with us for many years to come. Would I go back….I’ve already booked up for next year!!!

MINEHEAD SEA ANGLING PROJECT VA LK Y R IE CH A R TE RS An exciting community Sea Angling Project has been overwhelming, from anglers and non anglers taking place at Minehead Harbour. The project came about through a collaboration between Minehead Vision Manager Stephen Hooper and Minehead Harbour Master Adam James. The initiative has been financed by Somerset Skills & Learning (the Community Learning Fund), the Devon and Severn Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority and West Somerset Council with additional support from the Angling Trust.

alike. There has been so little appreciation of the international status of the Severn Estuary as one of the most important fish nurseries in Northern Europe and the significance recreational sea angling has to the local economy. We hope this initiative will have pushed this into the public consciousness"

This project has been teaching local people about beach, boat and harbour fishing and shoreline awareness. Three local anglers have been trained to become qualified coaches through the Angling Trust and supplied with teaching equipment to ensure local knowledge is being passed on by locals to locals. In response to demand from both the general public and anglers a bait cutting station has been installed. This was made from a boulder which was sourced from a local quarry and created by stonemason Richard Smith. An angling information board has been created and installed at the harbour, along with digital and printed waterproof information cards. In addition to this a new Family Angling Festival has been held alongside the 'Taste of Exmoor' Streetfood Festival at Minehead Harbour. The festival was a big hit with casting competitions held on the sand in the harbour and fishing demonstrations given by the Angling Trust England Team. A selection of local species were kept in a catch tank and the team were able to show and tell the public about the marine life on their doorstep.

BIG FISH MAKE A SPLASH IN THE 2014 SEA SPECIMEN AWARDS Results of the Angling Trust’s Sea Angling Specimen Award Scheme have now been published and there were some fabulous fish caught and entered into 2014 programme. The scheme offers anglers the opportunity to enter their exceptional and memorable catch from all waters in the UK and receive a certificate and medal recognising their special achievement. With 808 entries from 34 clubs in 2014, participation is on the up and the Angling Trust is encouraging anglers to get involved. 90 Gold awards were issued in 2014 and notable catches included Malcolm Lemoinger’s 4lb 7oz Flounder, Ross Staplehurst’s 18lb Spurdog, John Racket landed a 15lb 14oz Bass from the boat, all caught in Dorset, Hants and Isle of Wight. In South Devon Doug Mosedale landed a huge 98lb 3oz Conger Eel and Gary Mitchell landed a 25lb cod from the shore while Paul Burnett caught a 7lb 5oz Grey Mullet. A full list of entries and awards is available on the website.

Eric Gerrey, scheme administrator said; “It’s great to see entries increasing year on year and even better to see the quality of fish that are being caught from our waters. In 2015 we are working to attract a sponsor to enhance the scheme further and our vision is to provide prizes for the ‘best monthly fish’. I'd encourage anyone interested to visit the website and get involved.” The scheme is open to all Angling Trust individual members or members of clubs or associations affiliated to the Angling Trust. Awards are categorised into Gold, Silver, Bronze and the colour of the medal awarded is determined by the size of the species landed. To find out what constitutes a specimen fish in your area, how to submit an entry and the boundary maps for your areas, please visit the website www.anglingtrust.net/seaspecimenawardscheme

An estimated ten tonnes of mullet was caught at Sennen last week with fishermen using the traditional method of seine netting to bring in their prize. But the Cornish Federation of Sea Anglers (CFSA) said that by netting the mullet when they did, the fish were being wiped out during the vulnerable spawning season.

Commercial fisherman have hit back at the claims with a war of words now raging online.

alone in 1954. "From growing up in Cornwall (and still living here on leave) I can say that this is the last defence," wrote Jack Glaves on the CFSA Facebook page. "The Alamo of cultural and fishing traditions. "Small fishing boats have been around since man realised they could catch enough fish for their village and are not the cause for concern. It's a bigger world than that and what you see on the coast with the small boat fleet. There are probably large French and Spanish boats off our waters as you read this catching a quantity of fish the same size as this."

Asking if seine netting should be a thing of the past and replaced with more sustainable fishing, the CFSA wrote on its Facebook page: "The mullet have aggregated for spawning and have been wiped out at their most vulnerable and during the most important phase of their life cycle. The phase when they contribute to the future stock."

Meanwhile Tal Bryant said: "Angling is sustainable and creates thousands of pounds for the economy whilst inflicting little environmental damage.

But, say supporters of seine netting, the method is sustainable, with generations of people catching fish this way.

Adding that he believes seine netting is a sustainable way to fish, Andy Wheeler, assistant to the chief executive of the Cornish Fish Producers Organisation, said: "a few local fishermen carrying out the traditional fishing that has been done for generations is not going to wipe out the mullet population, it is as simple as that.

A seine net is taken out to sea from the beach to surround the shoal of mullet and the two ends are pulled together to trap the catch. Mullet were for generations a vital part of Sennen's seine fishery. In 1875, some 20,000 tons was landed and The Cornishman reported that around 20,000 fish were caught at the Cove in one night of seine netting

"Commercial fishing practices like this create little for the economy whilst causing considerable unnecessary damage to marine ecosystems."

"There are shoals of mullet all around the coast this time of year and what they caught is a miniscule amount in the grand scheme of things."

SILVER SPRAY REPORT Spring is well under way and so are the fish that come with it. We have seen the start of the pollock out on the wrecks with plenty of sprats marking for them to feed on as well as small cuttle fish. The first flatfish of the year have hit the deck with turbot, brill and plaice all making an appearance on our first trip down west. It is the first season that I have caught a brill before turbot on the banks, I usually think later in the year is better for them. We haven’t had any monsters yet but I think we should start seeing a few bigger ones after this big spring tide coming up this weekend. I’ve men-

tioned it in the last couple of reports but even now, when they have usually disappeared, the spurdogs are still plentiful out on the banks. Just yesterday the staff from Greenoke Energy managed 14 spurs to 21lb along with 11 blonde rays to 28lb in a day that was none stop action start to finish. I’ve started to use 6/0 circle hooks pretty much all the time for this sort of catch and release fishing as they leave the fish unharmed with the hook point always settling in the corner of the mouth and not further to the back.

ll here we are approaching April and poised for the start of a new season, none of us knowing what it will bring. All hoping for a few personal bests or that illusive new species. This time of the year though is the worst for those of us needing to pen a few lines to compile a fishing report as unpredictable weather and fish mean that most anglers take time out from fishing. March as usual has thrown up some challenging weather including a prolonged period of cold north-easterly wind but there have been some worthwhile catches for those venturing out to wet a line. Locally anglers are enjoying some good plaice fishing outside the harbour when conditions allow and further afield, a few turbot are being landed. The offshore banks have continued to fish well throughout March on the smaller tides. Spurdogs seem to be most anglers target species but blonde rays and conger have been caught in good numbers too. By mid March the licensed fishermen are usually landing the first of the seasons black bream but at the time of writing, I have not heard reports of any yet. We can expect them any day now and by the time you are reading this, I am sure bream will have been landed. We anglers though, usually have to wait a couple of tides after the first commercial landings to lure them to our baits in any numbers. It would appear that wreck fishing for Pollack is proving to be very good this year. I have heard of good numbers being landed both west and east of Poole. On Trueblue we have only ventured mid channel once and despite a very fresh north-easterly wind, the pollacking was very good with plenty of fish up to 15lb. We even landed four small cod, which is not common for March. The improved flood defense works to the eastern end of Poole Quay that I mentioned last month began on the 9th March. These works have completely closed off the area of the Quay where anglers are used to boarding boats. The work is due to take thirteen weeks to complete and during that time we can expect some disruption to how we operate. Anglers need to liaise with their skippers as to the pick-up point on a particular day. For the period of the works, skippers have permission to pick up from their overnight berthing pontoon. Other options include Poole Quay Boat Haven, which is probably the best option as this gives anglers nearby access to Tesco Express, the Quay Café and of course, the relocated Sea Fishing Poole, which is now situated by the access ramp to the boat haven. Poole Quay Boat Haven is also the closest pick-up point to the parking in the Thistle Hotel. Another pick-up option is Custom House steps situated towards the western end of the Quay. In a recent Poole and District Fishermen’s Association publication, the Poole Harbour Master, Mr Brian Murphy has written a letter about “Drifting in Poole Harbour Fairways and Channels”. His letter outlines the potential dangers and limited courses of action available to a large vessel that is impeded by another boat drifting in its way. Mr Murphy also reminds us of the byelaws that make it illegal to obstruct channels and fairways with our boats and of a potential fine of £1,000 plus costs to offenders. He goes on to say that with increasingly larger vessels using the port, it is becoming more important to

enforce these byelaws. I mention all this because in last year’s September issue of the SAN I wrote about this very subject. These byelaws that make it illegal to drift fish in the fairways and channels are not new. They have been in force for many years. In the past we have been privileged to not have these byelaws enforced, probably because of a recognition that good captaincy and boat skills by most anglers and fishermen have meant that incidents involving larger vessels have been kept to a minimum. There has also probably been a desire to allow as many user groups, or which anglers are just one of many, to enjoy the harbour without to many restrictions. Last year however I did witness on several occasions, boats drifting in the channel that left it until the very last minute to move out of the way of a larger vessel. It was these incidents that led me to write about this subject last September. It is also probably the reason why the Harbour Master has chosen to highlight this subject now. Can you imagine what it must be like, in control of a vessel like the Barfleur, piloting the narrow channels of Poole Harbour with very few options to manouvre, when you see a small boat drifting ahead of you. The boat appears oblivious to your presence and soon disappears from sight below your bow. If I were the man responsible for the safe passage of any vessel, then I would want to have a warm feeling well in advance that a vessel in my path had seen me and was taking precautions not to impede my track. It is for this reason that when a larger vessel is approaching, we should get out of the channel straight away and as soon as we see it. The fishing in the harbour in recent years has been excellent at times and I know how frustrating it can be to have to move when the catching is going well. It is better to lose a drift now though than to lose the right to fish for good. I believe that unless some of us change the way we do things now, we could eventually lose the right to fish in certain parts of the harbour for good. The problem here of course, is that most of you reading this are probably the good guys. That’s all for now. Wishing you all a great start to the season. Best junior in senior shore matches for both weight and points was Eden Lynham who won both the Junior Cup (shore) and The Eric Hamblett Memorial Trophy; he also won the Jake Neal Roving Challenge. On to the boat section and this year’s winner was Steve Fowles who won not only the Symes Cup but the Boat Champions Shield with Faye Stephenson picking up the Rose Bowl for best lady and Charlie Lawson winning the Junior Cup and the Churchouse Boat Plaque for best junior in boat matches. Next came the Species League and the winner of the separate Junior League was Ewan Chambers. Winner of the handicap league was Adam Cullingford and in the main league best lady was Frances Kitchin with the overall Species League Champion and Match Points Champion prizes awarded to PJ Wheeler. A sprinkling of sizeable codling brightened a thoroughly wet second round of the series on the Mersey Estuary promenade upriver from Otterspool. Also caught were flounders whiting and dabs with both crab and worm baits productive. Acknowledged Mersey expert, John Waugh drew a peg in the high numbers of Zone B and landed six codling for 277 points including the joint heaviest fish of the match at 46 cms (98 points). Joe Perry won Zone A for the runner-up place, also winning the flatfish pool but third placed Andrew Dawkins now leads the championship after two rounds following his two top four places.

Mike Spiller and James Trevett fished from their own small boat out from Lyme Regis. Conditions were good for the catch and release day ahead, with plenty of different and colorful species being caught during the day. Nice to see was the first Black Bream of the season, with James landing a nice fish of 3lb 5oz. Mike also got in on the act by landing a stunning looking Cuckoo Wrasse of 1lb 4oz. The pair managed at the end of the day to find a few Plaice with the best of these weighing in around 2lb.

Results (scored in continental style from 2 rounds): 1. John Waugh (Wallasey), 6 codling, 277 pts. (Zone B) 2. Joe Perry (Litherland), 3 codling, 2 whiting, 1 flounder, 206 pts. (Zone A) 3. Andrew Dawkins (Lymington), 5 codling, 154 pts. 4. Ian Griffiths (Eastham), 3 codling, 160 pts. 5. Heather Lindfield (Greasby), 3 codling, 1 flounder, 111 pts. 6. Derek Bibby (Crosby), 1 codling, 80 pts.

A few nice fish were caught by club members of the East Devon based Honiton Sea Angling Club recently.

Members of the Honiton club are noticing a huge difference now in catches around this part of the coast, mainly due to the area belongs to the Lyme Bay protected Reserve. Like most local clubs now, club members try and make sure all these sorts of fish are weighed, photographed and then returned safely for another day. Check out the Honiton Club's website on www.honitonsac.co.uk or visit their face book page.

Roundfish Pool: equal I. Griffiths & J. Waugh, both codling of 98 pts. Flatfish Pool: J. Perry, flounder, 56 pts. Series after 2 matches: 1. A. Dawkins, 47 points. 2. J. Waugh, 41. 3. Presentation group 2015

The Presentation ended with two awards that are highly valued by club members; the Clubman Shield and the President Cup. Firstly the Clubman Shield which goes to the member who has best supported club events throughout the year and the recipient for 2014 was Steve Harwood who had attended fifty club events. Next the club’s president Dave Cornick took the floor to present the President Cup. This was started by club president Fred Bowditch who sadly past away in the autumn of 2013 and is presented to the member who the incumbent president considers has done the most work for the club. The president had considered four recipients for this year’s award; Steve Fowles for running the shore events, Richard ‘Tiny’ Daw for maintaining the website and producing the newsletter and updating the club’s paperwork, the Angling Centre for taking membership and support for the club and Roger ‘Hoot’ Guppy for all his meticulous and hard work in keeping the club running smoothly as secretary, junior secretary and press officer. The award this year went to Roger Guppy. The evening finished off with a raffle and the committee would like to thank all those individuals who donated prizes and Tom Marley for organisation.

Burnham Boat Owners Sea Angling Association Persistent NW winds have restricted fishing afloat from Burnham On Sea over the last month although when able there are enough fish about to make it worthwhile. Catches have mainly been made up with codling in the 2-4lb bracket with the odd better fish. Thornbacks are on the increase and this should continue as we move into spring along with conger, the humble dogfish present as ever. Steve H presentation 2015

Some members have been trailing their boats to Portishead to fish in shelter when too breezy at Burnham with reasonable success. April should see the bass arrive with the smoothhounds not far behind them. Hopefully the codling will hang around for a little while longer.

Mike Spiller Cuckoo Wrasse

No competitions went ahead over the last month due to wind but fish of the month was won by Craig Willis with a cod of 3lb 15oz. With a bit of luck the winds will ease and swing to the south allowing boats to get out more over the coming months.

Sea Angling News, April 2015

ALDERNEY ANGLING REPORT Fishing recently has been up and down. Those individuals who have been getting out with the lures have managed to find some nice Bass to around 5lb as well as plenty of Wrasse and Pollack. Bait fishing has been relatively slow though with the most productive fishing of late being Garfishing on the quay, with some quality fish in excess of 1lb 4oz being caught. Platte Saline, our main beach, is going through a cold spell for action at the moment, with only the odd Bass and smaller species making an appearance at night. The Bream are finally starting to show around the island albeit late for a winter run, in small numbers and size though. The Mullet shoals are also beginning to appear in the harbour area, so with any luck we’ll see a good run of those this spring. A few flatfish have also started turning up, we get a small run of Plaice here which show day and night. Rarely bigger than pan sized fish caught but we do get the odd 3lb’er but none yet. Sole have been caught at night as well, fairly unusual for this time of year. Some of us will be thinking boat fishing with some fine weather of late, Turbot will be plentiful on the banks and on the wrecks loads of plump Pollack. Get the hook in to the bottom around the edge of the wrecks at slack and you’ll bag up on the Ling. Looking forward to it, warm weather, flat seas and plenty of fish………………….you can dream eh?

weekends away. Pegged match at Platte Saline. Nearer the time, due to the numbers we have, so I can lay out the correct number of pegs it would be nice to know if you are going to attend so on the Friday before I will get your thoughts on whether you know for sure you’ll be fishing or not. If you’re 50/50 that’ll be ok, shall lay a peg down in case. It’s a one rod with maximum 3 hooks fishing from 18.00 to 23.00. Booking in at gravel works at 17.15 to 17.45. Longest length of fish caught, fish to be signed and measured on your cards issued at beginning. No size limits, all species. Pool fish will be the longest fish.

League Table Job to know what’s going on here, with matches to be missed due to holidays, Jokers played and not played who is where then?? To help I have added in brackets a J so you can see who has played and how many, remember it is 2 each. Top 4 win a rod or reel to the value of £100, top 4 fish the Fish Race Final and for the winner a trip to Norway (or somewhere warmer if preferred!). Best 12 matches from the 19 count. 1.

Alderney Angling Shore League 2015 – Heaviest Fish Comp Great turn out yet again with 22 entrants. Real buzz at the booking in despite a cold and strong NW wind which wasn’t going to make life easy. A whacky races style start with cars going bumper to bumper to be the first away given the limited marks caused by the weather and swell; and everyone dispersed to their ‘ideal’ marks. No jokers were played this time so no one was going to double their points. Fishing was hard…….Pollack and Bass were the species tp get anglers off the mark on the lures, a good choice made by those targeting these and giving them the opportunity to move around, 20 minutes here, 20 minute there to find fish. As darkness approached so tactics changed to settle down and fish a mark properly. Two small Congers showed, one for our unknowing comedy legend Mick Maurice with a well deserved fish for all the effort he puts in and Ross, already with a Pollack as a weigher, improved on this with a small strap. Garfish were around on the quay which saved the day for Adam and Mark, whilst Dave snuck a very welcome Sole out.

Alderney Angling Shore League 2015 – Fish Race Reciprocating the opening to last months report………. great turn out yet again with 20 entrants. Real buzz at the booking in tempered with reality that again on paper this looked easy but in that reality it was going to be tough. Several jokers were being played – glory or disappointment would beckon. Not sure what it was but fishing was hard…………….. ah got it! I know what it was………..lack of flippin fish!! Other wise the fishing would have been a piece of cake. Slowly but surely the different species were being caught. The so called hard one due to its apparent recent disappearance being the Black Bream were found by a few quite easily, small fish in any circumstances which would not have been worthwhile but in this format incredibly welcome. Corkwings……get on the right mark and easy to come by, miss that mark and it proved difficult but the biggest key to progress was nailing that target fish and being able to move on and take advantage of other opportunities. In the end it was Matt Smith that won……………. experience of his white wash in 2013 and his success of 2014 in the subsequent Fish Race finals proving the difference. Closely run by Ross and Dicky on 7 a piece!

RECENT CATCHES ON SEAFIRE II

SPOTLIGHT ON WATCHET MARINA

Bullhuss caught aboard Seafire II. Inset: Andy with a cod water. There are always plenty of ray throughout the summer- there are four species in the Bristol Channel. The smooth hounds come into these waters and create great excitement (crab baits best for them) and so do massive conger eels. Steve Yeandle, Dan Hawkins and Sean Anning, the local commercial fishermen report catches of eel over 40lbs regularly and some as big as 80lbs. In the summer, bass- not huge in number, but always around, weigh up to about 10lbs.

Fishing from Watchet looks more attractive this year. Watchet Harbour Marina is offering a summer special to small boat fishermen. The beauty of fishing from Watchet is that the fish are right there. You can anchor up within five minutes of leaving the harbour and enjoy far more fishing than from many other venues. It’s possible to get a full four hours fishing over 1 high water period or eight hours between the tides. The other advantage is that Watchet Harbour Marina is in the shadow of the Quantock, Brendon and Exmoor range of hills. The water is perfectly sheltered from winds coming from the South East round to the West. So when other fisher folk are sitting around in numerous south coast angling venues irritated at being blown off, Watchet men are out fishing smooth

Watchet Marina is known as the Friendly marina partly because the quaint town puts on fun events throughout the summer including a music festival and has many venues for live music. The chandlery opens at 7.30 and provides most things including bacon butties and hot drinks before you go The offer to fishermen is only applicable from April – September for a maximum of five months in that period. Berths will be on F pontoon which has limited facilities. The offer at £105.67 a meter is for boats of a maximum length of 6 metres. The marina is secure. There are several live aboards and that adds another level of security. There is a boat yard for repairs with cranage and other facilities. Steve Yeandle has been fishing there commercially for the last 30 years. He says, “Smart move! Bring your boat here and try it- you might like it- its’ a friendly helpful place with both the Camra Beer and the Cider pub of the year just outside the marina.

BRISTOL CHANNEL / MINEHEAD

Sea Angling News, April 2015

BRISTOL CHANNEL BOAT by James Wigglesworth

It looks like the channel is finally starting to wake up after the winter period as the Minehead skippers are starting to head to the grounds west of Porlock and they are seeing some good results. I was on one such trip last week with Dave Roberts on Alykat Too and it turned out to be a fantastic day. Between us we boated forty odd bullhuss up to double figures, several congers, a handful of spurdogs up to 17lb, pollock, pout, plenty of 3 bearded rocklings, too many dogfish and some lovely plump codling and a few whiting. I don’t think nine species is too bad for this time of year. The emphasis still seems to be very much on the spurs at the moment on our offshore marks and there are plenty to be had for those wanting some good sport. There seems to be some bigger specimens around with fish up to 19lb being reported. It’s still a similar story down at Ilfracombe with huge catches of spurs being taken on most trips. Just to spice things up I’m told that there are some pretty large congers being landed by the anglers aboard Bluefin II skippered by Jon Barbeary. This can be frantic sport so if you do have a trip planned down that way then make sure

you take plenty of bait as you will certainly need it. The ray fishing is picking up nicely with blondes and small eyed visiting the deck more frequently and of course the odd spotty here and there. Numbers of rays will only continue to increase as the season goes on so that’s something to look forward to. There’s still some good codling around for those wanting to target them with worm and squid baits. There seems to be a good head of these around the Watchet areas still although I haven’t seen or heard of any monsters for a while so that could be that for this year (famous last words). Shaun Anning skipper of Sea Fire II has seen numbers of thornback ray increase significantly over last few weeks and these along with the codling, congers and dogfish have been making up the majority of catches for his parties. The fishing in general really should start to kick off from now on and with a bit of luck we might start to see a few smooth hounds move in by the end of the month. Good luck to any of you heading out on the boats this coming month. I look forward to seeing your catch reports. Fish hard!

MINEHEAD / BRISTOL CHANNEL

BRISTOL CHANNEL SHORE REPORT By Craig Butler of West Coast Tackle

This months Bristol Channel shore report is pretty much a copy & paste repeat affair of last months report, minus a few individual catches. Codling still dominate catches throughout most of the channel from Minehead right up into the upper Severn.

THE OLD SHIP AGROUND

Historic Harbour-side Venue

Multiple catches of a dozen or so codling in a session are still bring reported , mainly from the Clevedon/Weston area, but these are not so common as a month or so ago. Further down towards the Minehead area 4-8 in a session seems to be A good bag at the moment. With the codling being 3-5lb there's no complaints. We have been spoilt this past winter with some of the best and consistent codling sport in the country. It kicked off in early August and it's still going strong now and we still have the peak of the spring run to come. No doubt many are totally "coddled out " and will miss out on bagging some great sport with the warming spring sun shine on there backs as they turn attentions to other species.

●Newly refurbished iconic pub and hotel with its fantastic Minehead harbour-side setting.

The past few weeks have seen a handful of half tidy bass caught from the Minehead area with 3-6lbers caught. I understand ragworm has been doing the damage for them. Again like every month the good old Thornback is a target fish for anyone wanting to bag one from many of the low and high water marks throughout the channel. Recently while trawling through the tonne of social media sites looking at anything resembling anything to do with angling. I noticed a bit of a rare catch by Weston Angler James Madison in the shape of a haddock. Ok it's wasn't the biggest haddock , but on the scale of it , it's a rare fish indeed to be caught from the channel and to be caught in the upper parts you could say even rarer. The spotted Rays are just starting to make themselves noticed in and around Minehead. We just need that water to pop,up a few degrees and they will become a steady target species.

There's also been a good few small turbot caught local to Minehead for those on a species count . As I tap away again at the last minute to get this report in to my very patiently waiting editor . We have just had the biggest low water in something like 200 years ?? So I read somewhere anyway. It was a bit of an eye opener if your an avid low water dwelling limpet. With our fascinating coast line there's a life time and more of discovery. A few hours spent in search of watercraft knowledge can be priceless for spotting those deep pools that rarely give up the their whereabouts. West of Minehead down towards Bossington and Porlock weir the mixed fishing is steady with bull Huss, Rays, codling, pollock, eels, bass and dogfish by the bucket load so if your looking for a mixed bag then try your luck around here. It's a tad early to realistically target them , but the first hounds have been caught on the boats from this area and close inshore as well. I wouldn't be surprised if the odd one is caught from the beach by next months report, we'll see, but that's for another time. Anyway enjoy your fishing, stay safe and make the most of what the Bristol Channel shore has to offer. Tight lines and happy hunting.

WEST WIGHT

WEST WIGHT CHARTER BOATS

WEST WIGHT REPORT By Arthur Savage WEST WIGHT FISHING REPORT IN A TRIP TO THE ANDAMAN ISLANDS, INDIA MARCH 2015 This year our fishing expedition took us back to the Andaman Islands, for another week of excitement; we arrived on the Thursday afternoon with time to set up all of the popping rods, along with the jigging and bottom fishing rods to try something a little different this year. After all the fishing gear had been made ready it was time for the evening meal, followed by a couple of beers from the fridge. Next morning, 07.00hrs, we were on the boats at port Blair ready to start the days fishing. Two boats left with three anglers per boat, one fished up to the North East and our boat went South, about 20 miles to some remote islands, where we stopped and fished (popped) over the various reefs around the island; before long we had our first to G.T.’s in the boat. This was how the fishing went with dead baits fishing the bottom over slack waters; this turned out

to be very productive with many different species coming to the boat, which included three different sorts of Triggers, Sweet Lips, Coral Trout, Red Bass, Groupers and many others I had never seen before. Every day we went to a different location, all within a 25 mile steam; there were so many, you were spoilt for choice. We also fished other areas, such as the wall, which is a big drop off that produced just about every sort of fish, and offshore reefs about 15 miles off and 20 metres deep; this area not only produced some really big G.T.’s on popper and stick baits, but jigging turned up some stonking big Dog Tooth Tuna, Mackerel, Blue Runners and Striped Tuna, plus shark on a popper – what a trip! We just about had enough energy to eat our meal in the evening when we got back to the house, before falling asleep over a beer. I have to say this year was just as exciting as last, with great weather, many happy memories of good fish, and great company. Tight lines - A A Savage - Skipper – “Private Venture”

Sea Angling News, April 2015

Port Report March has always been regarded as the best month for pollack fishing over the offshore wrecks out of Weymouth although anglers would be forgiven for thinking April has been become the more productive month over the past few years. However, this year, the pollack are on the wrecks in numbers and are of a good size with plenty of double figure fish to keep spring time anglers busy. It’s always best to check with your skipper as to the best lure to use. Apart from the finicky nature of the fish, skippers favour certain wrecks and even this choice of the fishing mark can have its own ‘favoured’ lure colour. The weather has been chilly but with today’s amazingly effective protective clothing that should not present a problem. It is with confusion that we skippers still see customers arriving dressed in totally inappropriate clothing for the time of year and type of fishing. It is dangerous to go to sea in cold weather with chill factors a major concern…please, splash out and get the best clothing you can! It’s worth it! Apart from the Pollack there have been some very good ling caught to 20lb+. These ling have been caught mainly on the lures when pollack fishing with just a few reported on baits deliberately targeting the ling. Ling is a strange fish…..everyone wants them until they are caught and then they become very difficult to shift off the boat. That’s the main reason why the Weymouth skippers tend to avoid anchoring sessions for the ling as too many unwanted fish are caught. Hard to believe but I recall a club from Birmingham out with me several years back and we hit into a lot of ling. For some of the club members I overstayed the session and I was criticised for this with half of the club saying they would never come with me again for allowing this to take place. The other half told me they wouldn’t come if I moved them off the fish!! Well….what would you do if you were the skipper confronted with this no-win scenario. The inshore fishing has remained productive throughout these first months of 2015. Latest reports show rays coming from the various banks, a few plaice and a trickle of turbot. There’s still a few conger roaming about as well as whiting.

ling caught. The cross-Channel trips will have begun with turbot the main species along with pollack on the wrecks and reefs. Mackerel should arrive sometime towards the end of April and there will be sandeels on the Shambles and Shoal Bank as from now. The fresh baits will of course boost catches especially for the turbot on the Shambles Bank. General reef fishing is usually slow in April with plaice becoming a main inshore target species on the mussel beds surrounding The Shambles Bank. Most inshore trips tend to concentrate on turbot and plaice throughout the month with rays probably the next best bet.

The Facebook pages for the local skippers contain an array of photographs mainly featuring Pollack. So, for an up-to-the-minute report on what is happening, take a look! I hope there will be some photographs appearing on my page as of the start of April…..can’t wait to get back home and get back out there!! As always, a big Thank You to all of you who have supported the Weymouth fleet throughout these opening months and I am very pleased to read that catches have been good. Long may this continue and let’s all hope for another great year together.

April is soon upon us. British Summer Time is near. Soon be the longest day…..!! In April we will still be concentrating on the pollack but if lucky the cod will arrive, maybe in mid month. There will still be
